Clay Aiken – A Class Act Amid the Crass

On 12/10/03 Clay Aiken appeared on the 2003 Billboard Awards Show. For an artist who was new the professional music scene, Clay played a prominent role in the evening gala. Ryan Seacrest was the host of the evening and he had Clay help with the opening of the show.

The Billboard Music Awards are held annually and are always in December.  Much like the American Music Awards, the winners are chosen on popularity.  The awards are given out based on the Billboard year-end music charts.  Some of the categories are top selling album, top selling artist and top selling single.

Clay was introduced by the irritating Kathy Griffin and performed Invisible to an enthusiastic audience.  After the performance, Clay was presented with the award for the best selling single of the year.

Clay was accompanied to the BMA Award show by his mother, Faye.  They both looked wonderful as they walked down the Red Carpet in Las Vegas and Clay was stopped many times by the press.

It was wonderful to see Clay win the Billboard Award and his performance was amazing.  However, there were some “interesting” things that went on that night.  Pathetic Kathy Griffin thought she was funny in her introduction of Clay, but most of Clay’s fans didn’t find it amusing.  Add to the list of negatives was the vulgar jokes by Dave Grohl and Triumph the Wonder Dog.  They really were “Crass” as they joked about Clay.

The following video shows Clay’s introduction, his performance of Invisible and his acceptance speech…no Dogs allowed!!

  1. Clay had a fantastic performance that night. He has always taken the high road and just tried ignore the "crass" behavior of others. It's one of the things I appreciate most about Clay. 🙂

  2. Clay is a man to be admired, a man who shows grace under pressure and a man who always speaks for those who need a voice. He is a person who acts with dignity when some of the others around him have lost theirs. I am a fan for these reasons and of course his great amazing voice!

  3. Kathy Griffin is a pig and makes me sick, It had to put Clay in an uncomfortable situation….but he handled it well, I will be going to see him live in Feburary….can't wait…..

  4. Thanks for the memories. What a night for Clay and what a great year he had. Too bad Clive and 19E let it go to waste. Loved the Clay we had then but love the Clay we have now. He is a man of character and walks the walk and talks the talk unlike the entertainers that are in the spotlight now.

  5. Looking back now…Clay really showed Class. KG not so much. She couldn't just introduce him…she had to be pathetic…. I even forgot about the banter after the performance with Jessica S. and Nick. They weren't funny at all. People just loved putting Clay down as much as possible. A match between Pink and Clay. What the heck was that all about???? It's a music show????? Seriously…The entertainment industry needs an emema.

  6. In spite of Kathy G, I enjoyed this video. Just think, this was in the first year of Clay being in the music business and he seemed so at ease!!

Thanks for posting the video….I LOVE CLAY AIKEN

  7. Thanks for that Video! I enjoyed it very much. Clay always has Class…sorry, can't say the same for the rest of that show. I believe Faye didn't think much of the show either. So glad he is never on these kinds of shows any more. Kathy Griffin…Total trash and she always will be!
