Clay Aiken – Juggling Decisions!

Today is Sunday, February 26th and for most people in the United States, it is a huge night on television.  Tonight, ABC will be broadcasting The Academy Awards.  Known as the Oscars, these awards celebrate the best of the movie industry.

But…wait…for fans of Clay Aiken, the night demands some juggling, DVR’s and unfair decisions.  What Clay fan would choose the Oscars over the second episode of Celebrity Apprentice?

All kidding aside, the 84th Academy Awards ceremony will be held tonight at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood at 5:30pm PST.

One of the most interesting categories of the night is usually the award for the Best Original Song.  It is presented to the songwriter who has composed a song written for a specific movie.  Unfortunately, the artist who performs the song is not credited unless they contributed either some lyrics or music.

2011 was not a great year for original songs in movies. In fact, some say it might be the worst year in the eighty-four year history of the Academy Awards.

Only two songs were nominated this year in the “Best Song” category – “Man or Muppet” from The Muppets and “Real in Rio” from Rio.  Besides the lack of nominees, the two songs being honored might be cute but are not particularly catchy, poignant, or memorable.

Below are some of the classic winners from previous years. These songs are not only identify with the movies in which they were featured, they are often representative of an era.

Some of the most memorable songs came from the 30s and 40s:

  • Thanks For The Memories (1938)
  • Somewhere Over The Rainbow (1939)
  • When You Wish Upon A Star (1940)
  • White Christmas (1942)

Among the “Best Song” winners from the 70s:

  • Theme from Shaft (1971)
  • The Way We Were (1974)
  • Last Dance (1978)

Winners from the 80s include:

  • Flashdance (1983)
  • I Just Called to Say I Love You (1984)
  • I’ve Had The Time of My Life (1987)

In the 90s, there was an impressive string of Disney winners (songs from Beauty and Beast, Aladdin, Lion King, Pocohantas).  There were also popular hits like:

  • Streets of Philadelphia (1993)
  • You Must Love Me (1996)
  • My Heart Will Go On (1997)

Can you name any Best Song winners in the 2000?  I can recall only the fun song, “Jai Ho” from Slumdog and Eminem’s “Lose Yourself.”

This is the first year that none of the nominated songs will be performed during the awards broadcast.  This is too bad as  music is such an important part of any movie.

Looking back at the songs listed here, I can’t help but wish I could hear Clay sing these great songs.  There are a few that he has recorded or performed in concert, but I would love to hear some of the others too.  AND…. maybe some year soon, we will hear Clay singing a nominated song at the Academy Awards Show.

Are you watching the Academy Awards Tonight or will you DVR it so you can watch Celebrity Apprentice?  In California, the Oscars start at 5:30pm.  I might get to see both shows when they are broadcast!

  1. Sorry Oscars but I will be DVR'ing the show so I can watch Clay on Celebrity Apprentice. No if's and's or butt's about that decision!

  2. Thank you for the movie-song recaps, great stuff!! Like you, I'm here in L.A. so hopefully will get both, woo-hoo!! If I had to make a choice, I'd go Celeb App and catch up on Oscar stuff later.

  3. Again, who's Oscar???? My eyes will be on a certain red head tonight on NBC – NO, not Aubrey O'Day!!! LOL See you all at 8pm 😉

  4. I always watch the Academy Awards, but not this year. I have a date with Clay tonight. I'll check out the winners and the gowns online tomorrow.

  5. I don't plan to watch the Oscars, it's way to long and drawn out.I am rooting for "The Help" though. I'll just read who won online later. I'll be watching Clay and Company on Celebrity Apprentice.

  6. I won't be watching the Academy Awards. I'll catch the highlights later. With Clay Aiken on my tv, all other shows lose.

  7. Another West Coaster here so I probably won't have to choose. I'll be visiting family, so I'll be having another evening of my phone alerting me to the live tweeting of Dee Snider, Clay Aiken, Lisa Lampanelli and Donald Trump Jr. =) *fingers crossed they will all be live tweeting*

  8. Last Sun I watched and taped Apprentice so I could rewatch it. Tonight I’ll watch Apprentice and tape the Oscars. I can rewatch Apprentice on line later in the week. Thank goodness that Downton Abbey was reshown at 1:00 am, so I could

tape that too! (I still use VHS tapes!)

  9. I'm not into the Oscar awards, but if I had to choose which show to watch, there would be no question! Watching Clay's every little move and expression is eye candy for me!

  10. I don't have a DVR, but I am watching Clay. He and the CA are more interesting than the Oscars. The only thing I watch it for is to see who has on the most outlandish outfit. I am so excited for CA tonight. Go Clay!

  11. I will be watching Celebrity Apprentice. I will DVR the Oscars. It's always too long that I almost always fall asleep watching it.

  12. This is a no brainer….Clay wins…EVERY TIME!!!!!!! Can't wait to see CApp tonight!!!!!
And yes, One day I have faith that Clay will be singing a wonderful song that will be nominated for an Oscar. He has the perfect voice for a movie soundtrack…..No doubt.

  13. Is that a trick question? ;-O I wouldn't miss ginger Clay on Celebrity Apprentice for anything! I might click back and forth during commercials though, but probably not chance it. I can't miss any small move or expression from Clay either. Thanks for the great information on the songs in past Oscars. It was fun reading.

  14. No question about it…I am definitely watching Clay tonight on Celebrity Apprentice. Never did watch that much of the Oscars…it is too drawn out and they leave the best nominations for last. I don't want to miss even a second of Clay.

  15. Clay always comes first for me. So…forget the Academy Awards. I want to see, hear, etc. Clay Aiken.

Thanks for all the info on the songs. Now, they need to use Clay's voice on a beautiful song for a movie. That would be perfect.

  16. I haven't posted for a bit, but read every day. Love the info on the songs.

But, my heart belongs to Clay Aiken, so I will be watching him on TV.

  17. Not a fan of the Oscars and no need to tape it either…..the only thing I can think about to watch tonight is TCA …………can't wait to see if Clay is singing. GO CLAY GO.

  18. I'll be watching and taping TCApp.
I don't normally watch the Oscars anyway, so I won't be missing out on anything.

  19. No need to watch Oscars for me – seldom go to movies – almost never – so it's ALL ABOUT CLAY!
So eager to watch TCA – and every bit of Clay!!
