It was announced on June 3rd that Clay Aiken would be making an appearance at a charity basketball game for the Richard J. Murphy Memorial Scholarship. The game will be played at the Leesville Road High School gymnasium on Thursday, June 14 at 6:30 p.m.
The game is a re-play of the 2001 game between Leesville Road and Broughton High School basketball teams. That game was played before the largest crowd to attend a high school game between two teams from North Carolina.
Some of Raleigh’s finest basketball players from Murphy’s era will participate including former and current ACC and NBA players.
The Richard J. Murphy Memorial Scholarship was established to honor a Leesville Road High School senior who epitomizes Richard Murphy’s high expectations and commitment to visionary leadership, public service, and lifelong learning. Mr. Murphy embodied these traits as a teacher, educator, and administrator during 36 years of service to the Wake County Public School System.
Richard J. Murphy was a life long educator who spent his entire career in the Wake County Public School System. In 1993 he realized a lifelong dream when he was asked to open Leesville Road High School, the first new high school to open in Wake County since 1978.
Richard J. Murphy passed away on Saturday, March 19, 2011 after a courageous battle with cancer.

Leesville alum Clay Aiken will also make a special appearance.
Does that mean Clay is putting on his basketball shoes and joining the game? Probably not… I think he will probably be singing the National Anthem.

Game admission: $10. Children 5 and under: $5. All proceeds go to the Richard Murphy Scholarship.
Doors open at 5:45 and game begins at 6:30

How great to have Clay at this special H.S. function! It is always a good thing when an Educator can
be honored for outstanding service. I appreciate this as my husband was also a teacher for many
years. It is an honor for Clay to be asked to make an appearance – so nice for those able to attend.

I think it's great that Clay will be attending. He must be so proud going back. How exciting for Clay. Yeah, I think he'll sing instead of playing basketball. Now…I'd pay big bucks to watch Clay play basketball….that would be fun.

Gosh, I wished I lived in N. Carolina. Hope somebody that lives there can go and get some clack. It is great that Clay will be there for this great event. I hope maybe he is singing the SSB.
I think it is wonderful that Clay gives back so much to his home state and to his community. I hope someone is there who can film it so we can enjoy the clack from this event. I always love to hear Clay sing the SSB.
