Clay Aiken – My Huckleberry Friend

Moon river, wider than a mile
I’m crossing you in style some day
Oh, dream maker, you heart breaker
Wherever you’re going, I’m going your way

Two drifters, off to see the world
There’s such a lot of world to see
We’re after the same rainbow’s end, waiting, round the bend
My Huckleberry Friend, Moon River, and me

The following are a few facts about the quiet, but beautiful song, Moon River:

  • Henry Mancini wrote this beautiful song with lyricist Johnny Mercer. The original title was “Blue River,” but Mercer found out another songwriter was using that title.
  • Moon River is a real river in Savannah, Georgia where Mercer grew up.
  • Mancini said it took him about 30 minutes to compose the song.
  • “My huckleberry friend” was in reference to a childhood friend of his. He used to pick huckleberries with him down by a lazy river near his home in Georgia.
  • Moon River won the Grammy Awards for Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best Arrangement.

In 2010, Clay Aiken included the song,  Moon River, on his CD, Tried and True.  The arrangement, by Carl Marsh,  featured Clay’s soft voice and the beautiful guitar of Vince Gill.  Clay debuted the song on his PBS Special, Tried and True Live.  He kept the beauty of the song, but put his own touch on his recording.
