The poignant song was performed at the end of the 2nd act and closed the show.
The song won the 1963 Grammy Award for the Song of The Year and the Novello Award for the best musical and lyrical song.
Anthony Newley introduced the song, but it became a hit for Sammy Davis, Jr. and peaked at #17 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Andy Williams also included the song on his album, Days of Wine and Roses.

Wow, today's CANN brought back some old memories. I saw Joel Gray perform in the play Stop The World… in Chicago in the early 1960's. I hadn't thought of that in many years. Clay did a beautiful rendition of the song in the videos. I was at one of the concerts to hear it in person.
