Sonra Louise Smart Dodd of Spokane, WA started the observance of the Father’s Day on the 19th of June, in 1910.

She wanted to express her thanks to her own father, who had reared her on his own, since the death of her mother. 

Her father, Henry Jackson Dodd celebrated his birthday in June, thus, she chose this month to celebrate the holiday.
