Clay Aiken – Yes…We Can!!

Are you a fan of Clay Aiken?  Do you want to know why you should seriously consider becoming an active member of FaceBook, Twitter, and YouTube…why it is important that you read and comment at blogs and articles about Clay?  If you read the following information, I hope you will see why it is paramount that we all participate in the social/digital world of a musician.

On July 20th, Big Champagne unveiled The Ultimate Chart at the New Music Seminar in New York City.

The purpose of the Ultimate Chart is to update old methods that were used to track the popularity of songs and artists. For years, Billboard charts have ranked musicians by sales only. The Ultimate Chart uses everything from Amazon downloads and YouTube/Vevo views to Facebook fans and Twitter followers to provide the music industry a chart for the digital age.

Eric Garland, the CEO of Big Champagne said:

“For the first time this is getting beyond but not leaving behind traditional sales and airplay. What we’ve tried to do is take everything we know about the ways in which artists and their fans connect and put that into one measure, so that we really know where we stand.”

Big Champagne’s partners and sources for the Ultimate Chart include retailers, online and traditional broadcasters (radio and television), major content companies, subscription services, social networks and other venues where fans demonstrate their passion for music. These include: Yahoo! Music, Amazon, iTunes, YouTube, VEVO, MySpace, Facebook, Twitter, MTV, ClearChannel, MediaBase, AOL, Napster, Microsoft Zune, We Are Hunted, LastFM and many more.

Data provided by Big Champagne is being used by major music companies to make decisions about signing artists and promoting music online and to radio stations.   Broadcasters use Big Champagne to help determine the list of songs performed on commercial radio and music television.

Tamara Conniff is the Founder/Editor of The Comet and a former Billboard Editor-in-Chief and Associate Publisher.  She is a huge fan of the Ultimate Chart:

“This chart is long overdue and represents for the first time an
accurate view of where popular music is today. Music is not just about sales, it’s about interaction—listening, watching, playlisting, evangelizing and socializing. The Comet will be publishing the Ultimate Chart and using Big Champagne’s data for analysis, prediction, and consumer trends.”

The following chart is an example of how Big Champagne comes up with their figures.  It does seem like a more concise way of measuring celebrity relevance in the entertainment field.

The Ultimate chart is the up and coming way to compare the relevancy of stars.  It is being posted at many of the top music webpages.

I thought a chart that compares some FaceBook and Twitter numbers would help to see the big picture.  The Facebook column is the number of friends and the twitter column is the number of people following the singer.

I have read on many of the Clay Aiken boards that many of his fans are a bit afraid of FaceBook and Twitter.  Well, I think it is time for each of us to get signed up and get counted for supporting Clay.  It doesn’t cost anything and if you are afraid of privacy issues, sign up as whatever name you want and don’t add any information you don’t want to.  And, use it only to support Clay.

If there are those who don’t know how to use the sites, lets set up a “Twitter for Dummies” site and another for FaceBook.  Perhaps someone can host a thread at each board.  AND, if all else fails, send me a message and I will set up something here.

Do you have any suggestions??  Is this something we can work on as a huge group?  If you believe that this information is important, please pass the word around.  Post the chart, copy some of the important facts or, if you have permission, leave a link.  I never ask this, but today, I feel this information should be shared.

Clay Aiken – Official 2010 Numbers!

By musicfan123 · Comments 10157(5)http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F2011%2F01%2F07%2Fclay-aiken-official-2010-numbers%2FClay+Aiken+-+Official+2010+Numbers%212011-01-07+08%3A28%3A02musicfan123http%3A%2F%2Fwww.claynewsnetwork.com%2F%3Fp%3D10157

As fans of Clay Aiken,  it is interesting and important for us to know the trends in music sales.  It helps to understand more about the good, the bad, and the complicated progressions that affect all people who are trying to make their living as a recording musician.

Nielsen SoundScan just released the Official 2010 numbers for album sales.  These interesting figures are for US sales only.  They cover the 52- week period that ended on January 2nd, 2011.  The percentages are compared to the 2009 totals.

  • Albums, Overall: 326.2 million units; Down 12.7%
  • Albums, Physical: 240 million; Down 19%.
  • Albums, Digital: 86.3 million; Up 13%
  • Digital Track Sales: 1.172 billion, Up 1%
  • LP/Vinyl Sales: 2.8 million, Up 14%

The figures reinforced the idea that digital sales are becoming more popular each year.  In 2010, digital formats accounted for 46% of all music purchases.

The top selling artists of 2010, based on digital track sales, were Eminem (15.7 million), Ke$ha (13.5 million), Lady Gaga (11.9 million), Katy Perry (11.8 million) and Black Eyed Peas (11.3 million); the cast of Fox’s “Glee” also sold an impressive 10.7 million tracks.  That’s a lot of music.

The Nielsen organization revealed some other interesting numbers.  The figures show that one-third of all music albums were purchased at big box retailers in 2010.

According to the numbers, 33% of all albums, physical or digital, came from Big Box Retailers.  This category includes stores like Wal-Mart and Target, but do not include electronic stores like Best Buy.

Sales through places like the iTunes Store or Amazon MP3 accounted for 26 percent of the combined total.

One of the sad statistics showed that only 8% of albums were purchased at independent retailers.  I guess that means no more Tower Records!

Many leaders in the recording industry have been predicting the demise of music albums in the near future.  They foresee a time when artists release one or two songs digitally every few months throughout the year.

The flux in the music industry is certainly a problem for musicians, record labels and those fans that enjoy hearing up to date releases.  It’s a difficult time for all.

Clay Aiken – Listed As Executive Producer

On November 28, 2006, Clay Aiken released a studio EP titled All Is Well.  Originally released as an exclusive recording for Wal-Mart, the popular album finally became available on iTunes in December of 2007.

There are four songs on the All Is Well EP.  The Playlist is:

  1. All Is Well
  2. Christmas Waltz
  3. O Come O Come Emmanuel
  4. My Grown-Up Christmas List

Clay Aiken is listed, along with Jaymes Foster as an Executive Producer of the EP.  All Is Well debuted at #54 on the Billboard Comprehensive Albums chart. This is unusual as it is unusual for an EP disc to chart or to have its sales tracked.

The title song, All Is Well, was written by Michael W. Smith and recorded for his album Michael W Smith Christmas in 1989.  Because it was a popular song, Smith included the song on 2 more of his albums.

Michael W. Smith has released 22 albums and ten books and has received many awards, including Dove awards and Grammy awards.  Smith is currently on a Christmas tour and will be performing another tour called 2Friends with Amy Grant in early 2011.

Clay Aiken was the featured musical guest on the Capital One Holiday Celebration on Ice in 2007.  The show was televised on Christmas Day and Clay sang songs from his albums Merry Christmas With Love and All Is Well.

Todd Eldredge is a former World Champion and 4-time U.S. Champion.  He chose All Is Well for his skating performance for the Celebration on Ice show.  For many in the audience, the performance of the two artists was the highlight of the show.  Eldredge also used Clay’s recording of this song for his Rockefeller Center performance for the Today Show.

The following video is from the Christmas broadcast of the Capital One Holiday on Ice.  I was lucky enough to be in Las Vegas for the recording of this show?  Were you there too?

Clay Aiken – Finding Good Music

By musicfan123 · Comments 10009(11)http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F2010%2F09%2F03%2Fclay-aiken-finding-good-music%2FClay+Aiken+-+Finding+Good+Music2010-09-03+07%3A15%3A31musicfan123http%3A%2F%2Fwww.claynewsnetwork.com%2F%3Fp%3D10009
Friday, September 3rd, 2010

If you are reading this blog, chances are you are a fan of Clay Aiken. So…it follows that you are probably a fan of good music.  Most fans of good music are interested in finding the best place to hear and purchase their musical choices.  Apple and iTunes is hoping that they will be your choice of new music purchases.

On September 1, 2010, Steve Jobs presented some facts about Apple and iTunes that are very interesting.  He started his presentation with some very impressive statistics.

  • There are currently 300 Apple stores, in 10 countries.
  • There are in excess of 1 million visitors to those stores on most days.
  • iTunes has 160 million active accounts
  • 12 million songs in the iTunes store
    • 450 million TV episodes downloaded via iTunes
    • 11.7 billion songs downloaded from iTunes
    • 100 million movies downloaded via iTunes
    • 35 million books downloaded via iTunes

These numbers seem pretty impressive.

After presenting the statistics, Mr. Jobs announced the unveiling of iTunes 10.  An unexpected announcement was the introduction of Ping on iTunes. With it, users will be able to follow friends and see what music they have bought or enjoyed, what concerts they plan to attend and what music they have reviewed. They will also be able to follow bands and get updates on their new releases, concert tours and other events.

The service will be instantly available to 160 million iTunes users once they download the latest version of the software, the NY Times reports.

Mr. Jobs also announced a new iTune logo. He said:

“Since iTunes is about to bypass CDs in sales, we thought it was appropriate to ditch the CD.”

OLD LOGO

NEW LOGO

Do you like the new logo better than the old one?  Do you use iTunes?

Clay Aiken – Changes to Occur at Universal Music

Doug Morris

Doug Morris

According to BusinessWeek, Doug Morris, the CEO of Universal Music Group will be stepping down from his position.  Morris, who will be 71 in November, is expected to remain as chairman and has said publicly that he does not intend to retire.

The successor to run the world’s largest music company has already been chosen.  Lucian Grainge who’s the international chief will take over the CEO slot for Universal Music whose artists include Clay Aiken, U2, Elton John and Mariah Carey.

The timing of the executive changes has still not been worked out, but it is rumored to happen this summer.

Lucian Grainge is 49 years old and highly regarded by the executives at Universal’s parent company, Vivendi.  Morris will continue to work on key projects for Universal, but will turn over day-to-day operations to Grainge.

At the beginning of his career, Morris was a songwriter and then a record producer.  He was president of Warner Music in 1994 and eventually moved to Universal Music.  Universal currently sells more than one-third the music sold in the U.S.

At Universal, Morris became the industry leader in pushing for digital distribution of music. Universal was the first label to sign on with Steve Jobs’ iTunes, helping to pave the way for other labels to sign on before Apple launched the music service in 2003. Morris was also a key player in the music industry’s fight with Jobs that pressured the Apple CEO to offer variable pricing, by which iTunes now charges more to download just released music and less for songs from a label’s catalog.

Based in London at this time, Lucian Grainge has three school-age children and recently purchased a home in Connecticut.  It is expected that he will wait until the end of the school year before making the move to New York.

Will these changes make any difference for Decca Records or Clay Aiken?  Probably not as there have been no rumors or announcements of any changes at this time.

Morris has a fine reputation for being a leader who looks towards the future; however, it is nice to see a younger man step into a leadership role.  It is important that whoever is in charge supports the changes that are happening in the field of music.  It is a different world and fresh ideas are so important.

Clay Aiken and Digital Downloads

By musicfan123 · Comments 5961(25)http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F2009%2F08%2F20%2Fclay-aiken-and-digital-downloads%2FClay+Aiken+and+Digital+Downloads2009-08-20+07%3A11%3A01musicfan123http%3A%2F%2Fwww.claynewsnetwork.com%2F%3Fp%3D5961
Thursday, August 20th, 2009

According to The NPD Group, a leading market research company, CDs remain the most popular format for paid music purchases. But digital music continues to grow as a means to buy music.  In the first half of this year, 35 percent of purchased music was downloaded – up from 20 percent in 2007.

Russ Crupnick is the Vice President of Entertainment Industry Analysis for The NPD Group.  He reported about the buying trend to Yahoo music and said:

“Many people are surprised that the CD is still the dominant music delivery format, given the attention to digital music and the shrinking retail footprint for physical products.  But with digital music sales growing at 15 to 20 percent, and CDs falling by an equal proportion, digital music sales will nearly equal CD sales by the end of 2010.”

iTunes is now at 69% of all digital sales in the U.S., with the closest rival being AmazonMP3, at 8 percent. Walmart leads in physical sales with 20 percent of sales and is trailed by Best Buy at 16%.

While consumers are increasingly buying their music online, industry experts say as much as 10 times more music is obtained illegally through peer-to-peer Web sites. The move to digital music has also cost the record industry in other ways; online shoppers are more apt to buy single songs instead of higher-margin CDs.

When it comes to the Internet, record companies on the whole, have put up a big stop sign to downloading and are “court-inclined.”

“Remix” is a book by Lawrence Lessig.  In it, he tells the story of a woman who made a video of her two year old, dancing to a Prince song on the radio. She posted it on YouTube. Prince’s record company immediately contacted her and issued her a take-down notice.   Another incident of absurdity from the record company was when fans of Led Zeppelin posted low quality cell phone videos of the band’s 2007 reunion concert in London. Instead of seeing this as a marketing opportunity, Warner Brothers saw it as a copyright violation and ordered YouTube to take these videos down.

It is too bad that the record companies see the Internet and social sites like YouTube as the enemy. They need to start taking advantage of social networking. It is a great way to introduce people to new music and different artists. It is also a good way to get the word out about special promotions and packages that fans want to own.

So many Clay Aiken montages have been removed from YouTube.  Many of the videos are beautiful and show Clay as a humanitarian or just show his many talents.  They would have been great to show the positive side of Clay Aiken.  If one made the montage with some other artist’s music, it was almost always shut down.  Let us hope that the record companies wake up.

The future for physical media sales is not looking good. What is your opinion? Do you prefer to buy digitally, or do you want something you can hold in your hand?  I hope you will comment and let us know how you feel.

Clay Aiken on iTunes

By musicfan123 · Comments 4227(6)http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F2009%2F05%2F18%2Fclay-aiken-on-itunes%2FClay+Aiken+on+iTunes2009-05-18+07%3A01%3A14musicfan123http%3A%2F%2Fwww.claynewsnetwork.com%2F%3Fp%3D4227
Monday, May 18th, 2009

According to many recording industry sources, the recent price hikes on iTunes haven’t been much of a benefit to the people that wanted them the most – the record labels.

Digital Music News reported that the major labels have seen a drop in both sales and profits from iTunes since the new pricing structure went into effect.  The price on most songs on iTunes jumped by 30 cents. There was supposed to be many songs that were reduced in price also, but according to many sources, the hoped for back catalog track price reductions did not materialize and any search for 69-cent songs was largely an effort in futility. This made more than a few people doubly upset as there was ample evidence of $1.29 songs and hardly any lower priced music.

The site techdirt has no love for the record labels and puts the entire blame on their poor business practices.  They state that plenty of people predicted that sales would drop with higher prices and they feel that the executives at the labels should have been able to accurately predict how much.

Techdirt has no love for the music label executives.  The following quote from their article is strong, but seems to ring true.

Sometimes when we question the motives of entertainment industry execs, people say that we’re being unfair in questioning the “intelligence” behind those moves. We’re told over and over again that industry execs are much smarter than we are, and they know better than we do. And yet, almost everything that has been predicted has come true… over and over again. The industry keeps doing things that at least make it appear that it has trouble understanding the long-term implications of almost every move it makes. Perhaps they are smart. And perhaps it’s all part of some grand plan. But, to date, the only evidence we’ve seen is that nearly every move made by the industry has backfired, and resulted in less revenue coming in, while those who predicted alternative and embraced alternative business models are finding tremendous success. At what point do we stop assuming that the legacy industry execs “are smarter” and recognize that they seem too focused on the old way of doing business to recognize how to competently change course?

So, what has happened to the buyers?  Chances are they are still downloading, but have turned to less complicated sites to get their music.

A check of Clay Aiken on iTunes shows that all of his songs have stayed at 99 cents. A fifteen minute hunt at the iTunes store did not reveal any 69 cents songs.

Quote of the Day

It is not always about performance art, but about receiving positive energy from people with positive spirits. Sometimes we can see someone's spirit, and those are the people with great energy. Those are the people that get me through the day, especially on Broadway. -Clay Aiken
