Clay Aiken – Do You Remember

Tuesday, March 13th, 2012

Do you remember what you were doing on March 12th, 2010? For many Clay Aiken fans, this date will bring back memories of the taping of the PBS special at the Raleigh Memorial Auditorium. The concert, lovingly called the “OMG” Concert was the beginning of a year of wonderful live music, a new CD and DVD and many PBS specials on TV.

I was lucky enough to attend the “OMG” concert two years ago. I looked up what I wrote about the concert and thought I would share it with you.

Clay Aiken’s back in town and he is better than ever! Tonight’s concert was beyond the wildest expectations of the fans in attendance.

The concert was polished, professional and classy. Clay’s voice was phenomenal on the fresh arrangements of the timeless classics.

Clay opened the show with a rousing rendition of Mack The Knife and closed the show with a poignant version of Moon River. Each song chosen for the program allowed Clay to showcase his wonderful voice. It is amazing how his voice soared on the variety of songs. Each one highlighted his versatility and range.

It was a treat to see Ruben and Clay together again. I had forgotten what a beautiful voice Ruben has. The surprise of the evening was the guest appearance of Linda Eder who is one of the best female vocalists performing today. Linda joined Clay in singing the song, Crying. Clay announced that Linda recorded the song with him for his new album.

The evening was beyond even the highest expectations. I wish that every one of you could have been there to celebrate this wonderful performance.

Attending this concert in Raleigh was one of the most exciting nights I can remember.  It is still close to the top of the list.  One of the magic moments was hearing Clay sing Unchained Melody.  The arrangement by Ben Cohn was amazing and Clay really made the song his own!  And I will always remember the wonderful tribute to Clay’s teachers.  There is just something special about Clay Aiken.  His heart is filled with love and respect of those who have helped him grow into an outstanding young man!

Clay Aiken – Good, Bad, Cunning and Strong!

This post is coming to you from 2,580 miles from my home.  Early Thursday morning, I flew from California to New York.  I am here and ready to have a great time seeing Clay as a judge one night and a narrator another night. I imagine that Clay will be amazing in both roles.

The problem with long plane rides is that I am almost asleep as I sit here at my computer.  I had to get up at 4AM to get my flight…add the time difference and even a piece of cheesecake from Juniors didn’t wake me up!!

BUT……….there is fun news so I will do what I can. Hopefully, there will be no glaring spelling mishaps!!

It seems that Donald Trump was a guest on the Today Show, Thursday morning.  The following is the paragraph that accompanies the video:

Video on TODAY.com: Donald Trump tells TODAY’s Matt Lauer that he’ll do whatever he can to help Mitt Romney in his presidential race, and also discusses the latest season of “Celebrity Apprentice,” on which, he says, Clay Aiken is coming on surprisingly strong and nasty.

Nasty??  Clay Aiken??  Well,I love the words a fan found that the dictionary has listed under Nasty:  Tasty, Good, Bad, Cunning and Strong!!!!

So…nasty sounds good to me!! And here is the video:

Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

Did you see the article at Rolling Stone?  The following is what they had to say about Clay.

Clay Aiken

Age: 33

Claim To Fame: The doe-eyed North Carolina-native welled America’s hearts with his beatific balladry on Season Two of American Idol. (He ultimately took second-place to Southern big-boy Ruben Studdard). Aiken has since released six full-length albums, performed on Broadway and after coming out as openly gay in 2008, has become an outspoken activist for gay rights.

What To Expect: Don’t let the fact that he sings like a mermaid misguide you; if preview clips are any indication, this ginger-topped crooner’s got some bite behind that boyish charm. How he matches up with The Donald, however, might be a different story.

This week’s Entertainment Weekly rated Celebrity Apprentice as #4 in The Top 10 Must See List!

QUOTE:

CELEBRITY APPRENTICE
Donald Trump always says that this season’s cast of Celebrity Apprentice is “the best ever”, but with Clay Aiken, Lisa Lampanelli and George Takei (pictured), we’re inclined to believe that he’s right!

So sorry that I have somehow misplaced the link to this so you could see the entire article.  Maybe I will find it after a bit of sleep.

Did you have a chance to see the latest video of Clay and Kelly singing together the other night?  The performance is great and it is so much fun to see how excited the audience was when they saw Clay enter the stage.    ENJOY!!

Clay Aiken – Are You Ready?

On Thursday, February 9, 2012, Decca Records updated the artist page for Clay Aiken on their website.  Besides a bio,  photos, a list of Decca releases, and a small audio player, the site announced the release of Steadfast, Clay’s new CD.  Scheduled to be released in late March, Clay’s new single, Bring Back My Love is featured on the album.

Decca also released a press release that was picked up by many of the major entertainment news sites.  The press release was exciting to see and my favorite paragraph said:

In revisiting these meaningful interpretations Clay was also inspired to record a completely original, new song that could stand up to the classics. “Bring Back My Love,” captures the spirit of the older classics while reinforcing his commitment to a more traditional sound best suited to his own personal style. Overall, Steadfast again demonstrates Aiken’s considerable talents, notably flawless vocals delivered with passion and sincerity.

Now, that sounds good to me!  You can visit Clay’s page at Decca by clicking on DECCA.  Be sure a leave a comment at the site to let Decca know we are excited about Clay’s new music.

Playbill was one of the first sites to publish a short article about the release of Steadfast.  It is rather short, but nice:

Steadfast,” a newly packaged collection of heartfelt songs from Clay Aiken, the “American Idol” finalist who made his Broadway debut in Monty Python’s Spamalot, will be released March 29 on Decca.

“Steadfast” revisits the best of Aiken’s 2010 release “Tried and True,” featuring selected cuts from that record alongside a newly recorded, original song/radio single “Bring Back My Love.” Rounding out the disc are covers of Neil Sedaka’s “Breaking Up is Hard to Do” and Connie Francis’ “Who’s Sorry Now.” “Steadfast” arrives on the heels of Aiken’s upcoming appearance as a contestant on the new season of NBC’s “The Celebrity Apprentice,” which premieres Feb. 19.

Songs on the recording also include “Unchained Melody,” ”Moon River” and “It’s Impossible,” among others. “These musical gems have stood the test of time, and I am incredibly proud and privileged to have had the opportunity to make them my own,” Aiken said in a statement. “I stand by this recording ‘steadfastly,’ which is why I chose the title and how I feel about moving forward in my career in general – being focused and steadfast.”

Aiken — who was bested by Ruben Studdard during the second season of “American Idol” — has gone on to sell more than six million albums, co-author a best selling book (“Learning to Sing: Hearing the Music in Your Life”) and play numerous sold-out concert tours. He was a focus of the short-lived Off-Broadway musical Idol: The Musical and has appeared on “Ed,” “Saturday Night Live” and “Scrubs.”

For more information visit www.deccarecords.com.

The website LALATE has always been a source for positive Clay news…the ended their article by saying:

“I stand by this recording ‘steadfastly,’ which is why I chose the title and how I feel about moving forward in my career in general – being focused and steadfast” Aiken said in a news statement today.

Other sites that featured the release of Steadfast included:

Yahoo – Clay Aiken To Release New Album  YAHOO

HitFix – Release to Coincide With Celebrity Apprentice  HITFIX

BroadwayWorld – Clay Aiken’s Steadfast  BROADWAYWORLD

And Many more…

Clay also received some great publicity regarding his up-coming appearance as a  Judge for  a prestigious singing competition at Carnegie Hall.   The website, Operagasm wrote the following about Clay:

MASTER SINGER COMPETITION WITH NICO CASTEL AND CLAY AIKEN

New York, NY … Distinguished Concerts International New York (DCINY) and the New York Opera Studio (NYOS) are pleased to announce that Clay Aiken of American Idol fame and beloved popular entertainer will join the prestigious jury for theNico Castel International 2012 Master Singer Finalist Concert on Saturday, February 18 at 8:00pm at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall. Since coming to national attention on the second season of American Idol in 2003, Clay Aiken has sold more than six million albums, written a New York Times bestselling memoir, produced and hosted television programs, and starred on Broadway. Set to appear on this year’sCelebrity Apprentice (Series Premiere February 19 on NBC), Aiken will offer his unique experience and perspective to the jury and competitors. Aiken will also join DCINY as a Special Guest for an evening of choral music, Reflections of Life, on Monday, February 20 at Carnegie Hall’s Stern Auditorium.

There was one more quick mention of Clay on TV on Thursday.  On HGTV, they showed a quick picture of a beautiful home in Durham, North Carolina.  They asked the audience if the house belonged to Ruben Studdard, Clay Aiken, or Fantasia.  After a commercial break, they revealed that the home belonged to Clay and they showed a nice picture of him.  Important?  No.  Fun?  Yes!!

It is always great to see so much PR for Clay.  I do hope that you will visit as many sites as you can and leave a comment when possible.  Comments are a way of letting the site and the author know that you appreciate reading positive articles about Clay Aiken.

What a great time we are going to have this spring!!  Are you ready?

Clay Aiken, Ruben Studdard To Drop Albums In March

By Norman Byrd on 2012-02-07

(Check out the bolded part!)

Ruben Studdard and Clay Aiken finished first and second on “American Idol” in Season 2. They’ve toured together and remained friends over the years. Next month, they will enter the next chapter of their music career together when their new albums are released just a couple weeks apart.

Buddies Ruben Studdard, winner of Season 2 on “American Idol,” and Clay Aiken, the runner-up have announced they’re releasing new albums. Like many of the events in their careers, the two will see them released somewhat contemporaneously — with two weeks separation in March.

Ruben Studdard finished in first place on “American Idol” in 2003, his win hotly contested on the Internet by fans of the runner-up, Clay Aiken. But the two guys, who had developed a close friendship, didn’t let their placement in the final official voting interfere with their careers. In fact, Aiken would release his first album, Measure of a Man, two months ahead of Studdard’s debut, Soulful, and go on to sell more copies (nearly a million more), one of the few times either events has occurred in “Idol” history.

Both guys released their sophomore sets in November 2004, with Aiken again preceding. The albums launched just nine days apart. Aiken’s Merry Christmas With Love would become the biggest selling Christmas album of any “Idol” alumnus in the show’s history. Studdard’s I Need An Angel would be certified gold.

Third albums would come from both in 2006, just a month apart. Aiken’s A Thousand Different Ways would go on to sell nearly 600,000 copies. Studdard’s The Return would sell half as well.

The two united to tour together in 2010 for the “Timeless Tour,” co-headlining.

Overall, Clay Aiken’s sales (U. S.) have nearly doubled Ruben Studdard’s. He’s released five sets of songs while Studdard has released four. Both have seen each successive album sell less than the first. Both have changed recording labels since their first signing.

On March 13, Studdard will release Letters From Birmingham.

“I think it will be my most personal album,” the big guy told Huffington Post in January. “Because the first album I was just getting songs from everybody because, of course, I was on tour with “American Idol” and I really didn’t have the opportunity to be as involved as I wanted to be in the album. And with this album I was able to pour my heart out into the songs. And also I’m 33 years old. I’m not the same cat that I was when I first came out. So I feel a lot different about stuff. There are a lot of sexy songs on there; it’s just a real R&B album from top to bottom.”

Clay Aiken’s Steadfast will hit stores on March 27.

According to the “Clay Aiken News Network,” the Season 2 runner-up’s latest will combine some songs from his 2010 release Tried and True with some new material. It will be released in the middle of Aiken’s latest television gig, starring with Arsenio Hall and Donald Trump on NBC’s “Celebrity Apprentice,” which begins the second week of February.

Both Studdard and Aiken have new singles in rotation as well. Studdard released “June 28 (I’m Single)” on Jan. 26. Aiken dropped “Bring Back My Love” on December 21.

Clay Aiken – His Numbers Make History!

Did you watch the Super Bowl on Sunday?  If so, you were one of the 111.3 million viewers that made Super Bowl XLVI the most-watched network broadcast in television history.  Most viewers watched for the exciting football game, but others wanted to see the half-time show while some just wanted to see the expensive commercials.

NBC, the home of the Super Bowl broadcast had more to celebrate on Sunday.  Right after the presentation of the Vince Lombardi Trophy, NBC’s singing competition, The Voice, premiered its second season.  The show scored the highest ratings of any entertainment telecast in six years.

The headlines were all over.  NBC wanted everyone to know that they were successful and that they had a hit show this year.  If you searched The Voice on the Internet, you would find over 41,000 articles about the viewer ship numbers on Sunday night.  The Voice” scored 37.6 million total viewers overall, according to TheWrap.com.

BUT…WAIT…Let’s think back to May 21, 2003, the Finale of Season2 of American Idol.  The amazing show broke all records too.  According to an article by Robert Abele in Variety:

The finale, which crowned Studdard the winner by a narrow margin, was seen by 38.1 million people, Idol’s highest single-episode rating to date. Single-handedly “Idol” lifted Fox to third place for the entire season, a first. Little more proof was needed that the network had a juggernaut on its hands.

It seems that Clay Aiken and Ruben Studdard set a great record for viewer ship…38.1 million people!!!  They will be known, not only for their wonderful voices, but also for starring in one of the most watched, non-sports shows in television history.  I wonder how many Internet articles could be found about the AI Finale on May 22nd.

Clay Aiken – Defining Moments!

Tonight, American  Idol kicks off its 11th season.  It has been reported that the season will show 8 audition shows…WOW…that’s a lot of  ”Bad” singers.

As part of the promotion for the season, many of the popular Internet sites are posting articles about former  American Idol finalists.  The following articles mention my favorite American Alum:

From MTV:

‘American Idol’: Where Are Katharine McPhee, Leah LaBelle Now?
We also check in with Justin Guarini, Ruben Studdard, Constantine Maroulis and more ‘Idol’ alumni before season 11 kicks off.

Season Two
The One You Know: Clay Aiken can be seen in promos for the upcoming season of “Celebrity Apprentice,” accusing a teammate of being patronizing — all in the name of charity. Although his last few albums haven’t made a big dent in pop culture, Clay still remains the fourth-best-selling “Idol” contestant ever, right behind the holy trinity. (That’s Underwood/Clarkson/Daughtry, obviously.)

MTV

The Hollywood Reporter:

‘American Idol’ Game Changers: Adam Lambert, David Cook, Clay Aiken Among the Top 10
With season 11 upon us, The Hollywood Reporter looks back at some of the defining moments that shaped the show we know today.

1. Runner-up Clay Aiken Outsells Winner Ruben Studdard

Season two was all about surprises, but who could have predicted that the fashion-challenged Clay Aiken would not only survive elimination but rise all the way to the top two? On finale night, 24 million votes were cast, but Studdard squeaked through, besting Aiken by just 134,000. Soon after, Idol fans started voting with their wallets, and Aiken’s Measure of a Man CD debuted at no. 1 with 613,000 copies sold in its first week out, easily outselling Studdard’s debut, Soulful, which tallied 400,000. Aiken’s retail victory immediately set a goal and standard for future Idol contestants that didn’t get the celebratory shower of confetti, and it put in place the oft-repeated consolation, “You don’t have to win to be a winner.” (Michele Amabile Angermiller)

Clay Aiken – Celebrating Christmas

By musicfan123 · Comments 13363(9)http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F2011%2F11%2F27%2Fclay-aiken-celebrating-christmas%2FClay+Aiken+-+Celebrating+Christmas2011-11-27+08%3A08%3A19musicfan123http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F%3Fp%3D13363
Sunday, November 27th, 2011

On November 25, 2003, Clay Aiken was the MC and host of the American Idol Christmas Special shown on FOX-TV.

The show was taped in LA on October 30, 2003.  The following Idols were a part of the show:

From Season 1: Tamyra Grey, Christina Christian, and Kelly Clarkson
From Season 2: Clay Aiken, Ruben Studdard, and Kimberley Locke
They were joined by the American Juniors and the Canadian Idol, Ryan Malcolm.

Besides his role as the MC, Clay sang the following songs:

Simply Having a Wonderful Christmastime – Clay and Ruben Duet
White Christmas – Clay and Kim Duet
Don’t Save It All For Christmas Day – Clay Solo
The First Noel – Clay

The following are 2 examples of the Press for this holiday show…the bolding is mine!

Entertainment Weekly

It won’t be a very Justin Christmas this year. ”An American Idol Christmas Special” (Fox, Tuesday, 8 p.m.), will boast carols from ”Idol” hands including Clay Aiken, Kelly Clarkson, Kimberly Locke, Christina Christian, and Ruben Studdard. But Mr. Guarini will be nowhere to be found. Why? ”He was in New Zealand and couldn’t make it,” says ”Idol” producer Ken Warwick. But dry your eyes, Guarini-philes, and take a look how those Idol-ers who DID make it will celebrate the holidays.

FEAT OF CLAY Guarini was originally intended to be the special’s host, but a runner-up who actually sells CDs — Clay Aiken — will fill his shoes. And if the show’s producer is to be believed, Aiken’s talent for emceeing (think Ed Sullivan, not Eminem) matches his preternatural pipes. ”Clay was a total natural,” says Warwick. ”We struck gold there.”

Clay will do plenty of singing as well. He’ll start with ”Don’t Save It All For Christmas Day,” a tune originally attempted by a chanteuse who shares his melodramatic bent, chest-thumper Celine Dion. The Clayster will also belt Irving Berlin’s classic ”White Christmas” with Kimberly Caldwell, and will chime in with ”The First Noel” during a show-closing medley of standards.

INDEPENDENT WOMAN As befits ”Idol”’s first winner, Kelly Clarkson will make the biggest entrance. After all the other participants start things off with a medley, Kelly will strut out alone to sing ”My Grown-up Christmas List,” a track she recorded for the recent album ”American Idol: The Great Holiday Classics” (although it seems a stretch to call that obscure tune — previously recorded by Donny Osmond and Natalie Cole — a classic). She’ll go on to close the show with an a capella version of the carol ”O Holy Night.” That one we’ve heard of.

BIG MAN Second-season winner Ruben Studdard will sing Donny Hathaway’s ”This Christmas” (unaccompanied — even by his ”205” shirt, which he’s long since retired). He’ll then duet with Tamyra Gray on ”Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas.” Along the way, maybe he’ll update the world on why his long-delayed album won’t be ready to grace our stockings.

BEST OF THE REST Gray, meanwhile, will get her own moments to shine, roaring through Mariah Carey’s ”All I Want For Christmas (Is You),” and the more sedate ”Silent Night.” Plus, the winners of this summer’s critically panned spinoff ”American Juniors” will reconvene to sing ”My Perfect Christmas.” Perfect, indeed: That should give you just enough time to hit the refrigerator.

AMERICAN IDOL CHRISTMAS

Idol holiday cheer

by Anika Van Wyk
Calgary Sun

Dreaming of a saccharine Christmas? The Idol clan has just the one: Finalists from both seasons of American Idol host American Idol Christmas Nov. 25 at 9 p.m. on channel 3 and 22.

The hour of Christmas tunes is everything fans of the reality show would expect — memorable moments from the winners and painful moments from the runner-ups and group numbers. The only thing missing is blatant product placement and Ryan Seacrest.

Kelly Clarkson — the original American Idol — wisely stays away from the group medleys and sticks to strutting her stuff solo. Her a cappella version of O Holly Night is by far the highlight of the show.

Second season runner-up Clay Aiken MCs most of the show and proves he has so much more stage presence than Ruben Studdard, who won Idol 2. Aiken’s rich pipes are also very well suited to holiday classics.

The velvet teddy bear, Studdard, has a beautiful voice and he best shows it off while doing a soulful duet of Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, with Tamyra Gray. But it must be asked — what wardrobe genius decided to dress the king of sweat in a white fur- trimmed parka? Poor Ruben looks like he’s going to faint if he has to hit one more high note.

However, he doesn’t look as ridiculous as Christina Christian in her tarty ensembles, especially the red ultra-mini she wears while whining through the opening number — there was a reason she was cut.

Special guest Ryan Malcolm, the Canadian Idol winner, also has a costume blunder. The Jacko-esque pants he wears distract from his brief moment in the spotlight.

Malcolm’s voice is smooth and sexy during his version of Let It Snow, but the performance is way too safe.

The best gift of all from the American Idol Christmas special is that Justin Guarini, the runner-up from season one who starred with Clarkson in the movie From Justin to Kelly, is not in the show!

Did you see this show on TV?  Although a bit “cheesy”, I enjoyed watching Clay as he stole the show.

Quote of the Day

It is not always about performance art, but about receiving positive energy from people with positive spirits. Sometimes we can see someone's spirit, and those are the people with great energy. Those are the people that get me through the day, especially on Broadway. -Clay Aiken
