Clay Aiken – Who Wouldn’t Love To Sing With Clay!

The Time:  June, 1964

The Event:  The release of the album, Under The Boardwalk by the Drifters.

The Drifters were a doo-wop / R&B vocal group.  They were very popular from 1953 to 1964. The single of Under The Boardwalk was released by Atlantic Records and reached number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

The song is about two people who want some alone time and find it Under The Boardwalk!

Under the boardwalk out of the sun
Under the boardwalk we’ll be having some fun
Under the boardwalk people walking above
Under the boardwalk we’ll be falling in love
Under the board-walk board-walk

Under the boardwalk down by the sea
On a blanket with my baby … is where I’ll be…

The Time:  March 25, 2012

The Event:  Episode 6 of Celebrity Apprentice #5

Clay Aiken showed off his entertainment skills when he hosted a party to promote Crystal Light.  The men’s team created the ultimate summer beach atmosphere.  There was sand on the floor, beach balls, beach umbrellas, flowered shirts and even some bikini-clad girls!

The highlight of the party was when Clay sang Under The Boardwalk.  Accompanied by the talented Ben Cohn, Clay sang the first part by himself, but encouraged the party members to join in and sing with him.  Now, who wouldn’t love to sing with Clay Aiken?

AND…Clay’s hosting skills helped win the competition that night.  So…the National Inclusion Project won $50,000.

The Boardwalk – to me that means a sunny beach, classic amusement park rides, free shows, arcade games, and all the delicious artery-clogging food you can imagine.  Now, I will always add memories of Clay Aiken singing in his flowered shirt and lei to my boardwalk recollections.

  1. The Drifters was definitely my time! Was in Sr. High School and lovin' all of the music!
But Clay makes it sound so much better – no way could I sing with him – but do love him singing to
    me!!!
    Thanks MusicFan for the video!

  2. Thanks for posting "Under The Boardwalk" clip again. Loved it. There is not much that Clay can't sing…any style, any era, anything! I may never be able to sing "live" with Clay, but I sing along to all his music…so that makes me a happy camper!!!

  3. Clay's beach party was a really enjoyable one to watch. I absolutely loved Clay's performance of the Boardwalk song during his project manager stint featuring Crystal Light's Peach Bellini drink. My favorite graphic of the event was done by Fountaindawg. In it, Clay is shown holding his drink next to a multicolored beach umbrella, with the words of the Boardwalk song written on it. The umbrella is surrounded by thirteen different circled pictures of Clay's facial expressions. It is brilliant! Musicfan, I think you might have had it featured in a much earlier blog.

  4. Oh I don't know. Waiting for us to calm down over that finale fiasco was probably a good decision on Musicfan's part – besides – it's summer related. So jealous of the claymates that got to attend the party. Why does the guy in the blue trunks with white flowers look so familiar? There are only three episodes I can bear to watch in repeats – Mop, Peach Belini, Stuffed and Unstrung. Anything after the puppets I avoid like the plaque. Many thanks however those who posted just the singing in the finale.

    • I do understand. I haven't really posted much about Apprentice since the finale….

However, this was a special time and I loved Clay singing!!

  5. Oh…I really enjoyed that. Wish we could have seen more of his Party. It was the best. Sing with Clay? I would love to sing with Clay..just tell me and I will be there…"Under The Boardwalk With Clay Aiken." YeeHaaa!!!!

  6. Wonder if Clay went under the boardwalk when he performed in Atlantic City?! I do love those boardwalks on the Jersey shore.
