There is a new article about Clay and  his bid for the U.S. House of Representatives.

The Daily Tar Heel – Clay Aiken considers bid for Congress

American Idol runner-up Clay Aiken might want to go from “Invisible” to a Congressman.

The Raleigh native is considering making a bid for the U.S. House of Representatives. He would run against GOP incumbent Renee Ellmers in the 2nd Congressional District, which includes parts of Alamance and Wake counties.

Gary Pearce, a Democratic state political consultant, said he has spoken to Aiken several times during the last month.

“(Politics) is obviously a whole new field to him, and he understands that it’s something you don’t just jump into without doing your homework,” Pearce said. “But I think he’s going about it the right way.”

Pearce said Aiken is motivated by his belief that the current political system is broken.

“I think he wants to give back,” he said. “He doesn’t need it for the glory.”

Aiken has until Feb. 28 to file the official paperwork to declare his candidacy.

Pearce said the Democratic Party needs candidates like Aiken who have the potential to bring in the youth vote.

Students interviewed who live in the 2nd District said they were surprised that Aiken was interested in politics.

Junior Alyson Grine said she was unsure of Aiken’s qualifications, but also said she realizes that celebrities have interests outside of their careers.

Aiken has a degree in special education from UNC-Charlotte and has served as a UNICEF Ambassador. He co-founded the National Inclusion Project and is involved with the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network.

Aiken came out as gay in 2008.

Grine said she doesn’t see an issue with a gay candidate, but her hometown of Pinehurst might not share her views.

“My hometown is basically a retirement home for golfers — they tend to be pretty conservative,” she said.

Still, junior Ever Castro, who is from Asheboro, said informed voters would support Aiken if he has a good platform — ideally one that focuses on major issues for the area, including job creation.

“I think they would look over his personal life and focus on his professional and political views,” he said.

But Pearce said the district’s conservatism in general could pose a problem.

“Obviously there are going to be some people in the district who would never vote for a gay candidate, but I suspect most of them would never vote for a Democrat, period,” he said.

Micah Beasley, a spokesperson for the North Carolina Democratic Party said the party will support whichever candidate wins the primary in May.

  1. Finally, an article written by someone who took
the time to listen and understand why Clay Aiken might
be considering this. How true, he doesn't need the glory,
    he wants to give back.

Personally, I don't believe you will find another candidate
that runs with that in mind.

  2. That is absolutely wonderful news! Congratulations Clay and to all the cast and crew of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat! Cheers to all of you:D I wish I saw the play but I'm half a world away:( Still, I believe and I know that Clay is really an exceptional talent, both in singing and acting. Not to mention his big heart. Thank you musicfan for all the updates.

  3. So glad that Clay and the cast of "Joseph" took home a lot of awards!!! The show was fantastic. I saw it 5 times, and could have seen it more. LOVED IT!!!!! Congratulations to all, and especially to Clay. If not for him, I never would have made the trip with Clay friends. We had the time of our lives.

I imagine we will probably hear Clay soon about his running for Congress. I'm so thrilled that he is passionate about home state. He sees things that can be better, and wants to do something about it. I am so proud of him. I'll be watching closely. I'm sure we will hear that voice again….he loves to sing and entertain…so I'm holding on to that. Who knows????? I'll be here waiting!!!

  4. What do I think?
I think he'll make a wonderful congressman. So proud that he has the courage to try.
Wonderful news that he won the Broadway Maine Award for his part in Joseph.
I'm proud of both and know that I'll be following him on this new journey just as I've been following him on his musical one.
    Go, go, go Clay!!!

  5. I've been waiting for the BroadwayWorld Maine Awards to be announced all month long. So happy to hear that Joseph & cast won the honor.
It will be difficult for Clay in his run for congress in N.C., I just hope people will see him for the caring, dedicated man he is, not just a singer on a TV program.

  6. I am just so proud of Clay. What else can I say? Congrats and looking forward to his announcement next month!!!

  7. Hurray for Clay, cast & crew for taking home all of those awards! That is AWESOME! Can't wait to see if he will run for Congress… Good luck!!!! I think this is a fair statement if ALL of his fans were in the county that he's running for, we would ALL support him 1,000,000% 😀

  8. yaaay clay aiken whoo hoo im so proud of ya clay congradulations and the crew congradulations amazing job this is amazing
