Clay Aiken Visits The View

September 22, 2006………Clay Aiken was in the “blender.”  It was the fourth day of his frantic spin through the talk-show circuit, promoting his new album, A Thousand Different Ways.

On September 22, Clay visited The View.  Clay was greeted with great warmth by Rosie O’Donnell and the other ladies.  They chatted about several different issues including panic attacks, fame and hair styles.

Rosie was the definite leader of the interview.  She related that she had her roots in Star Search and could relate to his experience on American Idol and how overwhelming the whirlwind was after the show.

Much of the short interview was about panic attacks and how common they are in the world.  The ladies were very supportive and wanted to make sure they conveyed the fact that the panic attacks were nothing to be ashamed of.  Rosie said that Clay was doing all the right things.  Clay was surrounded by a very supportive group of ladies.

The audience was filled with Clay fans and the entire group was excited to see Clay and hear him sing.  Clay sang his first single Without You, a favorite on the new album.   Clay stood on the stage which was set beautifully.  This is something The View tries to do for their musical artists.

Two videos are available for this appearance and the first one includes the positive interview.  The second video is Clay’s performance of Without You.

Clay Aiken – 100 Songs

By musicfan123 · Comments 5118(14)http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F2009%2F06%2F22%2Fclay-aiken-100-songs%2FClay+Aiken+-+100+Songs2009-06-22+12%3A43%3A36musicfan123http%3A%2F%2Fwww.claynewsnetwork.com%2F%3Fp%3D5118
Monday, June 22nd, 2009

On June 22, 2004, CBS aired a 3 hour special called “AFI – 100 Years, 100 Songs.  Hosted by John Travolta,  the countdown from the American Film Institute featured clips of 100 songs.

Clay Aiken joined Burt Bacharach, Celine Dion, Barry Gibb, Barbra Streisand, and Paul Simon who commented on the songs in the Top 100.

The 100 songs were chosen by 1,500 “industry experts”; songs were evaluated on quality of music and lyrics as well as their cultural impact and legacy. “Over the Rainbow” – the Judy Garland anthem from “The Wizard of Oz” – was voted the greatest movie song ever.

The top ten list of greatest movie tunes follows:
Over the Rainbow from The Wizard of Oz
As Time Goes By from Casablanca
Singin’ in the Rain from Singin’ in the Rain
Moon River from Breakfast at Tiffany’s
White Christmas from Holiday Inn
Mrs. Robinson from The Graduate
When You Wish Upon a Star from Pinnochio
The Way We Were from The Way We Were
Stayin’ Alive from Saturday Night Fever
The Sound of Music from The Sound of Music

Commenting on “Lose Yourself” by Eminem, Clay said:

“Movie music does not have to be soaring love ballads. Lose Yourself is definitely an example of a movie song that makes a movie much more hip and much more popular for today’s culture.”

When commenting on “Unchained Melody” from Ghost, Clay said his mother had a dream that Clay would record a cover of Unchained Melody and it would be a big hit. One week later, LeAnn Rimes came out with the recording and it became a big hit. The hopes of Clay’s  mom were dashed. Clay also commented that he was in 4th grade when Ghost was released and that he did not understand the significance of the hands on the potter’s wheel during the song.
Another of Clay’s comments brought a laugh when he shared that he tried hard to learn to spell supercalfragalisticexpialidocious.

100 Years, 100 Songs, with the American Film Institute had an audience of 12.3 million people.  How many of those people were fans of Clay Aiken?

Watch the video below to see Clay’s part of the AFI show.

Clay Aiken And Celebrity Stalkers

By musicfan123 · Comments 4914(31)http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F2009%2F06%2F08%2Fclay-aiken-and-celebrity-stalkers%2FClay+Aiken+And+Celebrity+Stalkers2009-06-08+14%3A01%3A40musicfan123http%3A%2F%2Fwww.claynewsnetwork.com%2F%3Fp%3D4914
Monday, June 8th, 2009

This past week has been a roller coaster ride for Clay Aiken fans with a lot of conversation focusing on the state of “journalism”, unscrupulous internet bloggers and celebrity stalkers.  The purpose of this particular blog is to give some facts about celebrity stalkers.  There are many articles on the internet about the topic and each one has their own lists and ideas.  So, the ideas presented in this article come from many different sources.

According to Psychiatric Times, Vol 23:

1.4 million people are stalked annually in the United States. 1 in 12 women and 1 in 45 men will be stalked in their lifetime. 77% of women and 64% of men know their stalkers. 87% of stalkers are male. Less than two percent of stalking cases result in homicide. However, the emotional toll on the victims is significant, especially if you don’t know who the stalker is, or if he/she is mentally ill.

There are three basic types of stalkers.  They are Simple Obsessional Stalkers, Delusional Stalkers, and Vengeful Stalkers. In many cases there is overlap in the definitions.

A Simple Obsessional Stalker is anything but simple. They are typically the person who refuses to believe that a relationship is over, although they have been told repeatedly that it is. This type of stalker is the most common.

Do not be misled by this type thinking they are harmlessly in love. Many of them were emotionally abusive and controlling during the relationship and many even have a criminal record unrelated to stalking.

The next type is the Delusional Stalker. These stalkers frequently have never had any contact with their victim beyond the boundaries of their own mind. They may suffer from mental illness like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder or erotomania. What they have in common is a false belief that keeps them tied to their victims. In erotomania they believe that the victim loves them, even though they have never met. A good example of this is the man that stalked and killed Rebecca Schaeffer.

Another type of Delusional Stalker may believe that he and the victim are destined to be together and even though they may not have met if he only just shows how much he loves her then she will love him and they will be together as it is meant to be. An example of this type of stalker is John Hinckley Jr. who shot President Reagan in order to show Jody Foster how much he loved her.

A Delusional Stalker is usually a loner, unmarried, socially immature and does not possess the interpersonal skills to maintain friendships and relationships. They have had few if any sexual encounters. They most often choose victims that are unobtainable like a celebrity or a married woman, their doctor, teacher, nurse or therapist. Those helping professions are at risk for attracting a Delusional Stalker.

Delusional stalkers are very difficult to get rid of and many go on for many years fixated on one person.

The last type of stalker is the Vengeful Stalker. They get angry at their victim due to some slight either real or imagined. We have all heard of disgruntled employees, these are vengeful stalkers and can be just as dangerous as the delusional. They stalk to get even and believe that “they” have been victimized. Ex-spouses can turn into this type of stalker and violence is all too common a result.

Delusional Stalkers who are obsessed by love have been in the news the last few years due to some high profile cases such as the murder of Rebecca Shaffer the actress and the stalking of famous people like David Letterman and Brad Pitt.

The victim of this type of stalker does not even have to have ever had a relationship with the person or even know them for that matter. The love is perceived by someone who is mentally unstable.

They imagine every day actions like walking on the same side of the street or buying the same kind of orange juice at the supermarket are secrets signs and signals you are giving them of your undying love. Bottom line the stalking is not about “You” at all but very much about the stalker and their state of mind.

For this reason avoiding this type of stalker, although they are not overly common can be difficult. Because you do not have to show them any attention or affection in order for them to become fixated on you, how can one prevent this from happening?

Every case of stalking should be taken seriously even those where there is no violence threatened in any manner. The case of Rebecca Shaffer is a prime example of this. He wrote her love letters and sent her gifts then showed up at her door one day and shot her dead in cold blood with no warning. “Never” assume that someone is harmless because they have not threatened you with violence. That can change at any moment.

According to Brent MacLean, Founder and CEO of J.B. MacLean Consulting Inc.:

Perhaps the saddest thing about most North Americans is that we don’t always know the law. Many people think that there is nothing that they can do to stop a stalker. Even more people think “people on the internet can do/say what ever they want to you”.

Stalking is a legal form of harassment and is against the law. It important to know that the law is available to protect you from any stalker or someone hounding you and your “virtual” identity. If you even suspect that someone is stalking you, don’t wait until it escalates. Contact the authorities immediately. The information is out there, so get educated quickly.

In California, both criminal and civil laws address stalking. According to the criminal laws, a stalker is someone who willfully, maliciously and repeatedly follows or harasses another (victim) and who makes a credible threat with the intent to place the victim or victim’s immediate family in fear for their safety. The victim does not have to prove that the stalker had the intent to carry out the threat. (California Penal Code 646.9,)

The criminal penalty for stalking is imprisonment up to a year and/or a fine of up to $1,000. There are more severe penalties when the stalker pursues the same person in violation of a court restraining order, with a sentencing range of two to four years imprisonment. Persons convicted of felony stalking also face stricter penalties if they continue to stalk their victim(s). Courts may issue restraining orders to prohibit stalking. (California Family Code 6320)

A victim of stalking may bring a civil lawsuit against the stalker and recover money damages. (See Civil Code 1708.7 for the elements and remedies of the tort of stalking.

Unfortunately, the Federal Government has few laws to help victims of stalking.  They rely on the individual states to solve the problem.  At this time, North Carolina has not addressed the problem and has very little in place to help victims of stalkers.  For information on the laws of your state visit  HERE

All of us care about anyone who is being stalked.  One can only hope that the stalkers can get help and that the law will soon catch up so these predators can be put away.

We’ve had polls on here before about Clay Aiken, but this one is a video poll.  SueReu used some of her Sunday to put together some videos to make this poll.

One of the fun parts of Clay’s Solo Tour and the Juke Box Tour was his use of volunteers.  Sometimes they sang and sometimes they danced, but each one gave Clay a chance to interact with them and the audience.  And the moments always earned applause and even some laughter.

So…………..watch the poll and then vote on your favorite volunteer encounter.  Don’t forget, we would love to know why you chose the person you did.

Back in 2003, Clay Aiken was very busy on May 26th. He and Ruben visited the Today Show. Katie Couric was the anchor back then and she presented the two American Idols to the Today Show audience. Both Clay and Ruben had been running from different TV shows, to radio interviews, to business meetings about their careers. They were obviously tired, but happy.

It was a Monday and it was Memorial Day……and it was raining hard! Katie interviewed Ruben alone and then Clay alone. Katie admitted that her younger daughter was an original Claymate. Katie took as much time with Clay as she did with Ruben. In the next segment, they all went outside with umbrellas and got under tents. Katie asked both Ruben and Clay some more questions and then Clay and Ruben performed “I’m Proud To Be An American.”

The videos for this performance are terrible. I could not find any quality ones anywhere. However, I still am posting two YouTubes. The first is the Clay interview and the second is the duet. It’s fun to see such an early performance and interview. It’s hard to realize that it has been 6 years!!

Clay Aiken – It’s All About Idol + Blog

Congratulations to Kris Allen, the newest American Idol and to Adam Lambert, the runner up.  Their long road through the all the challenges of competition have ended and they are now on their way to bigger and better experiences.

Can you believe all the “hoop-la” that has been posted in the last 24 hours?  There are those who are happy, those who are mad, and those who think that American Idol needs a make-over.

When checking Google for some sources, there were 4,885 articles under news of American Idol.  Everyone has their opinion and wants to share it with the world.  There seems to be many reasons for all these articles.

  1. The American Idol winner caused an anomaly.  According to all the press, Kris was not supposed to win. Adam was the “anointed” winner.
  2. The number of people who watched the finale has declined by millions.  It was the second lowest rated finale in eight years.
  3. American Idol is no longer a singing contest.
  4. The show is getting stale.

Some of the opinions are legitimate, but the big question should be will American Idol do something to rescue their sinking ship.  Even with the low numbers, American Idol is a “cash cow.”  Each year, they make millions through advertising so should they rock the boat?

Clay Aiken joined many journalists who put some of the blame for the low numbers on the judges who seemed to have an obvious bias as to who should win.  They suggested that no one likes to be told how to vote.  Some felt that the judges should critique each performer, but declaring a winner before the finale is not being fair.

Some articles suggested that the audience is homophobic and some feel Kris won because he is a Christian.  Is this a legitimate concern?

Then there is the American Idol voting system which many think is a complete joke.  Since you can text or phone in votes over and over again, is the vote fair?  If the vote was switched to one vote per phone, would the outcome be radically different?

When Clay blogged about American Idol on Thursday, he had another thought.  He said the show used to be about real people who could sing. Now it is all “fame” and “gloss.”

All of these concerns are interesting and cause a great deal of discussion.  One can only hope that American Idol will read some of the suggestions and try to get back to their original idea which was to find the best unknown singer in America.

Your comments on American Idol and your suggestions for next year are welcomed.  It would make an interesting discussion.

On Wednesday night, Clay Aiken blogged about American Idol.  He answered some questions about the finalists and gave some opinions about the show.  We don’t usually copy Clay’s blog on this site as it is against our policy.   However, since the blog  has been published in edited form everywhere, the entire blog should be shown so readers know exactly what Clay  said, not what the gossips want us to read.

Now that it’s all over, and for the record…. I couldn’t be happier about the way AI ended this year. I only turn the show on once a season, and only to see what the set looks like each year. This year, I happened to turn it during the minute that Adam Lambert was singing “Ring of Fire” and, at that moment, thought my ears would bleed. Contrived, awful, and slightly frightening! I wasn’t really a fan and found myself surprised whenever folks told me that they liked him. Granted, I never saw another performance (and many folks who I trust said that he was great) but I can’t imagine I would have enjoyed it. Just not my cup of tea at all. To each his own. I never saw Kris sing on the show, but whether he was good or not is really relative. It’s usually a matter of taste, right? But Idol is not always a matter of musical taste only. It’s about the person you like. From what little I saw, Kris seemed likable. (That’s not to say that Adam isn’t just as likable as anyone.. maybe more so… I don’t know) When Ruben and I were standing next to each other every night (many years ago) you had two equally talented, equally unlikely, equally unpolished contestants…. so it really was a matter of taste as to who was voted for. While some may argue that one of us was hyped more than the other, I don’t feel that was the case. However, this year, there was an obvious bias. Not even having watched the show, I can tell you that I was WELL aware of the bias from the judges as to who should win. In my opinion, that is awfully unattractive. I don’t think I am alone.

In my opinion, it all often comes down to that last night of voting. Until the finale, folks are voting for the contestant that they want to see continue. But, I believe that on that last night, the dynamic changes. No longer forced to choose one person that they want to see win, the audience can effectively vote AGAINST the person that they don’t want to see win. In the case of season two this might have happened. There may have been some folks who voted for myself or Ruben because they didn’t like the other of us. I was the nerdy little girly boy who some didn’t want to see win, so they may have voted for Ruben. I don’t know. .. But again, I feel that Ruben and I were fairly matched. We both had our detractors and negatives, but I feel we were both very worthy of being on that stage in that moment, and either of us would have been worthy of winning. The show was different then, and folks made it in seasons 1-3 because they were “real” people who happened to sing/entertain well. But, somewhere along the way, AI stopped being about real people and started being about “fame” and “gloss”; It stopped being about the talented kid-next-door and started being about who was most marketable. (I don’t think anyone would have argued in 2003 that Ruben or I were extremely marketable.) So, this year it was not like 2003. This year it all came down to two contestants so extremely different and mis-matched…. one that was so obviously the “favorite”… so hyped and polished and “ready for market”; who (accurately or inaccurately) came off to many as arrogant and superior … and one kid who no one thought had a chance and (accurately or inaccurately) came off as humble and real.

In a battle between David and Goliath, my money is on David!

I think many voters got sick of being “told who to vote for”. I think many were turned off by the blatant favoritism shown towards one contestant. Therefore, on that last night, they used their votes against a contestant that they were tired of hearing about and for the contestant who had been written off. And, at the same time, I think they voted AGAINST an American Idol that has, for four years now, been more about the slick productions and polished contestants than it has been about finding the raw talent that it did in its first three seasons.

Those votes for Kris were also votes to return the show to its roots of finding “real” contestants with undiscovered talent and giving them the chance to grow and shine. They were votes that said “we’re tired of seeing contestants who already seem to know it all”.

Will American Idol choose to listen to the resounding and clarion call that those voters gave them?…. “Enough with the pretention. More Rubens, more Clays, more Fantasias and Tamyras and Kellys please.” My faith has always been in the voters. I think they have gotten it right every year (mine included). It’s now up to American Idol to decide if it will finally REALLY listen to the folks that keep it on the air.

Many of Clay’s fans discussed his comments all day. Some of his fans agreed with his entire blog while others were surprised that he was not a fan of their favorite contestant.  It was a lively discussion.

The most disturbing act of the day was when one of Clay’s constant detractors copied his blog and sent it to many gossip sites.  It has now been picked up by almost every entertainment and music blog around.  Perhaps this shows that Clay is a popular celebrity that draws readers to the articles.  Will it affect his career or life?  Hardly!!  It’s a big deal today and a blip in the big scheme of things.

In the meantime, Clay is out of the country, enjoying a short vacation.

Clay Aiken – The Finale

Wednesday, May 20th, 2009

With three performances each, Clay Aiken and Ruben Studdard showed the world their singing prowess on the Finale of American Idol, Season II.  The competition, held on May 19, 2003 was the last chance to swing the final votes over to their side. Their performances blew the roof off the place.

The performances for the night were:

Round 1
1. Ruben Studdard–”A House Is Not A Home”
2. Clay Aiken– “This Is The Night”

Round 2
1. Ruben Studdard, “Imagine”
2. Clay Aiken–”Here There and Everywhere”

Round 3
1. Ruben Studdard– “Flying Without Wings”
2. Clay Aiken–”Bridge Over Troubled Waters”

Ryan Seacrest started the show by stating that it started with 70,000 contestants and came down to two southern boys who are the most unlikely people in the world to be there.  He also reminded the audience that they would have 3 hours to vote and how important the vote is this evening.

After a video journey of Ruben’s American Idol trip, Ruben sang “A House Is Not A Home.”  Paula and Simon were excited about the performance, but Simon only said “it was good.”

Clay’s video journey was shown and then he sang his new single, “This Is The Night.”  The judges were impressed with Clay’s singing; however, Randy thought the song was terrible.

In the second round, the audience got Lennon and McCartney performed by Clay and Ruben.  Ruben’s interpretation of “Imagine” was all positive to the judges; however, no mention was made of the microphone malfunction that lasted throughout the entire first verse.

Clay sang “Here, There and Everywhere.”  The judges comments ranged from …you are still the bomb to very pretty to not blown away.  The lighting for this song was odd and many people thought it made Clay look “scary.”

The final round of the night was amazing.  Singing “Flying Without Wings,” the judges and the audience delivered an outstanding performance.  The judges commented that it was the best performance of the night.

Clay then performed “Bridge Over Troubled Water” and did a tremendous job.  Accompanied by a choir, Clay knocked the song out of the park.  It left all three judges with big smiles on their faces.

The night produced beautiful performance, two very different vocal styles, and both performers left it all on the stage.

The next night started with a red carpet and ended with the crowning of a new American Idol.  The last night was a 2-hour show so there was a lot of “filler.”  Ryan joined Ruben in his dressing room and showed both Ruben and the audience the cheering throngs in Ruben’s hometown.  Ruben was his cool self.

Ryan dashed across the hall to visit Clay in his dressing room.  He introduced Clay’s fans in Raleigh.  There were over 8,000 people in the RBC Center to cheer and support Clay.  Clay seemed shocked and amazed by the support.

The evening was filled with celebrities who had to give their opinions, former idol performances, goofy films of the judges and much prattle from Ryan.

A medley of songs was performed by all the finalists which included songs originally performed by the celebrity judges.

Then Ruben, Kimberley Locke, and Clay performed a medley of “Superstar,” “Somewhere Over The Rainbow,” and “On the Wings of Love,” respectively.

Ruben performed “Flying Without Wings” with the choir again. Then, Ryan took us back to Birmingham, at Ruben’s church. They were very proud.

Clay performed “Bridge Over Troubled Waters”.  Then, it was back to Raleigh. They were proud, too.

Finally, Ryan said “it’s the closest vote in American Idol history, the American Idol is…….Ruben Studdard.”

In all reality, there were 2 winners that night.  Both of the singers were talented young men who were ready to step into the world of pop music.  And, as we all know, coming in second just didn’t matter.

Enjoy the videos of Clay’s performances and then watch the group numbers from the finale.

New pictures added!!

What an exciting night on NBC tonight.  The show, 30 Rock was spectacular.  It was great to see all the top music stars, including Clay Aiken as Kenneth’s cousin.

We are collecting pictures and screencaps as quickly as we can so that you can see them all in one place.  Check back in a bit.  If we post new pictures, we will let you know with a red announcement.

Enjoy!!

Quote of the Day

It is not always about performance art, but about receiving positive energy from people with positive spirits. Sometimes we can see someone's spirit, and those are the people with great energy. Those are the people that get me through the day, especially on Broadway. -Clay Aiken
