Clay Aiken – Five Miles of Lights

There is nothing that symbolizes the commencement of the holiday season more than the lighting of the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree. The Ceremony is always a fun event, full of pomp and celebrities.

The Rockefeller Center Christmas tree tradition began formally in 1933 when a tree was decked with 700 lights and placed in front of the then eight-month old RCA Building, which is now the GE Building. The Christmas tradition was enhanced in 1936 with the opening of the Rockefeller Plaza outdoor ice skating pond. NBC-TV televised the first tree lighting in 1951 on “The Kate Smith Show” and as part of the nationwide “Howdy Doody” television show from 1953-55.

The Christmas tree that adorns Rockefeller Center is usually a Norway Spruce. The director of the Rockefeller Center gardens prefers the tree be between 75 and 90 feet tall and proportionally wide. Norway Spruce that grow in forests don’t typically reach these proportions, so the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree tends to be one that was planted in someone’s front or back yard. There is no compensation offered in exchange for the tree, other than the pride of having donated the tree that appears in Rockefeller Center.

Over five miles of lights are used to decorate the tree every year. Only the lights and the star decorate the tree. The tree is recycled and the 3 tons of mulch are donated to the Boy Scouts. The largest portion of the trunk is donated to the U.S. Equestrian team in New Jersey to use as an obstacle jump.

On November 30, 2004, Clay Aiken was part of the star-studded hour-long special on NBC celebrating the lighting the world’s most famous tree.

Co-hosts for the evening were Al Roker and Nancy O’Dell. Olympic Gold Medalist Sarah Hughes skated to Vanessa Williams who sang “Silver and Gold.”

Besides Clay, the musical lineup for the special included performances by Hilary Duff, Kenny Chesney, Tony Bennett, Jessica Simpson, Nick Lachey, Chris Isaak, Michael Buble, Vanessa Williams, and The Radio City Rockettes. Chicago was the special house band for national telecasts.

Clay was dressed for cold weather in an overcoat, striped scarf and a black hat. Clay sang “Winter Wonderland” during the National broadcast, and “Hark the Herald Angels Sing/O Come All Ye Faithful” during the earlier hour broadcast that was only shown in New York.

At the beginning of Clay’s live segment during the National Broadcast, the audience sang “Happy Birthday” to Clay, as it was his 26th birthday. Towards the end of the show, Clay joined the line of guests, as they closed the show by singing the song, “Let It Snow.”

Clay Aiken fans were excited to see Clay as a part of this exciting evening. It was an excellent opportunity to be seen and for people to be introduced to Clay’s Christmas album. “Mary Christmas With Love.”

Clay Aiken – Focused on Children of The World

Tuesday, July 5th, 2011

On July 6, 2008, CNN focused a lens on the children of the world who are in harm’s way and examined child survival issues in-depth during a global broadcast called “The Survival Project: One Child at a Time.”

Hosted by CNN’s chief medical correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta, the special focused on healthcare, education, water sanitation and protection from violence for children. UNICEF ambassador Lucy Liu and Good Charlotte musician Joel Madden joined Gupta as panelists for the program and spoke about their experiences with UNICEF.

Also featured on the program were Clay Aiken, Dayle Haddon, Ne-Yo, Nicole Ritchie, Al Roker, Marcus Samuelsson and Amare Stoudemire who all appeared in special video diaries of their volunteer experiences and encouraged viewers to help children around the world.

The CNN program highlighted four areas where UNICEF demonstrates its remarkable on-the-ground expertise in doing whatever it takes to save a child:

  • Child protection in Iraq
  • Water and sanitation in Laos
  • HIV/AIDS in Peru
  • Child survival interventions in Ethiopia

One year ago, over 2 million children, worldwide, were dead due to conflict in the last decade and over 1 million children have been orphaned. In 2007, 1.2 million children in Iraq have been forced from their homes; there are 70,000 new widows and 14 million children in need in Iraq. At the time of the program, UNICEF was vaccination children in Iraq against polio and measles.

Luciano Calistini is an emergency specialist and was a panelist on the show. He reported that Iraq is one of the most difficult countries to assure safety for UNICEF staff.

The program highlighted the clean water projects in Laos. It showed a family that had lost their 2 year old to illness because of contaminated water. Their village now has a simple $5000 clean water tap, built by UNICEF.

According to the World Health Organization, the lack of clean water and sanitation contributes to the leading causes of death to children under 5.

Another segment of the program focused on HIV/AIDS prevention in children. The program highlighted the country of Peru where there is a high rate of maternal to child transmission of the disease. UNICEF is active in educating the mothers so that the infection will not be passed on.

The last part of the program was about Ethiopia, a country that  has one of the highest child mortality rates due to malnutrition. At this time, UNICEF is training 30,000 young women to go out to the villages. They have a device which helps them determine the severity of  malnutrition and they can tag those who need immediate help.

Because of the drought, over 6 million children are at risk. Prices are rising and food is difficult to buy. UNICEF is trying to help by providing a nutritional high energy peanut paste that is used as a supplement for the children.

Fans of Clay Aiken were proud that Clay was a part of this informative program. Clay was articulate and knowledgeable about the plight of children throughout the world and helped the audience understand the role UNICEF plays in helping them.

“The Survival Project: One Child at a Time” was a chance to get a first-hand look at the plight of millions of children around the world, struggling each and every day for survival. The program urged people to find ways to help and listed many organizations that are actively working to help the children of the world. Have you donated to UNICEF recently?

The following video shows the quick comments made by Clay on the show. It is spliced together and jumps around. But, it still is Clay!!

Clay Aiken – Kick- Off To The Holiday Season

Tuesday, November 9th, 2010

In a press release on Thursday, November 4, 2010, NBC announced the talent lineup for the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree Lighting.  The holiday tree lighting will broadcast live on NBC, on Tuesday, November 30, 2010 at 8:00 – 9:00 p.m. ET/PT.

The 13th Annual Christmas in Rockefeller Center special will feature performances by many celebrity musicians. The star-studded performance will include:

  • Susan Boyle from Britain’s Got Talent
  • Mariah Carey, a top recording artist
  • Charice, the teen sensation from the Philippines
  • Sheryl Crow, the Grammy winning singer
  • Jackie Evancho, the 10 year old soprano from America’s Got Talent
  • Josh Groban, from Los Angeles
  • Katherine Jenkins, a Welch singer
  • Kylie Minogue from Australia

The Radio City Rockettes will also be featured in the extravaganza.  Natalie Morales and Al Roker will host the show.

For many, the lighting of the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree is the kick off to the holiday season.  Many families, friends, and individuals make it a point to attend the lighting ceremony every year.

The Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree is a worldwide symbol of the holidays in New York City. The tree, traditionally a Norway Spruce, is illuminated by 30,000 environmentally friendly LED lights on five miles of wire, and crowned by a Swarovski crystal star. Tens of thousands crowd the sidewalks for the event and hundreds of millions watch the Tree Lighting Ceremony broadcast live across the globe.

This year’s tree is a very respectable 74-foot high and 40 foot in diameter!  The tree lighting ceremony is free and no tickets are needed.  However it is advised you arrive early to secure a prime viewing spot for the 2-hour lighting ceremony.

I know that each of the musicians who will be participating in this program are wonderful, however, I would much rather see and hear Clay Aiken.  Nobody sings Christmas songs better than Clay.  Maybe he will get a return visit in 2011.

On November 30, 2004, Clay Aiken was part of the star-studded hour-long special on NBC celebrating the lighting the world’s most famous tree.

Co-hosts for the evening were Al Roker and Nancy O’Dell.  Olympic Gold Medallist Sarah Hughes skated to Vanessa Williams who sang “Silver and Gold.”

The following are some videos of the 2004 performances by Clay.  It looks like so much fun!

Clay Aiken – Roasting Matt Lauer

By musicfan123 · Comments 10064(1)http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F2010%2F10%2F24%2Fclay-aiken-roasting-matt-lauer%2FClay+Aiken+-+Roasting+Matt+Lauer2010-10-24+07%3A15%3A10musicfan123http%3A%2F%2Fwww.claynewsnetwork.com%2F%3Fp%3D10064
Sunday, October 24th, 2010

On October 24, 2008, Clay Aiken attended the Friars Club Roast of Matt Lauer.  Held at the Hilton Hotel in New York City, the event was hosted by Matt’s Today Show buddy, Al Roker who was titled The Roastmaster.

The Friars Club Roast is an annual event and each attendee paid $400 to eat dinner and watch a long line of NBC employees and celebrities make fun of Matt Lauer.  Proceeds from the event go to the Friars Club charity.

According to the New York Observer, the only guest without a joke at Matt’s expense was Aretha Franklin – she just sang The Star Spangled Banner.  The Observer listed the following participants in the Roast:

Katie Couric, Meredith Viera, Martha Stewart, Jeffrey Ross, Bob Saget, Brian Williams, Gilbert Gottfried, Richard Belzer, Pat Cooper, Jeff Zucker, Vanessa Williams, Clay Aiken, Bob Costas, Diane Sawyer, Kathie Lee Gifford, Joy Behar, Luke Russert, Jim Cramer, Donald Trump, Tiki Barber, Mario Lopez, Danny Aiello….

The Friars Club was established in 1904.  It was first known as the Press Agents’ Association.   It’s home in New York is called the Monastery.  It was in 1906 when the organization began its tribute dinners to theatrical celebrities.

The membership of the club is composed mostly of celebrities, especially comedians.  They have a monthly newsletter named the Epistle. The Friars’ leadership is made up of a series of positions similar to those in an Abbey, including positions such as “Abbot,” “Dean,” “Prior,” and “Scribe.”

Between 1998 and 2002, the roasts were aired on TV.  However, the entire evening is never shown to the public.  It is a private organization and some of the evening is kept for members only.

I remember seeing Clay being introduced, but most of the fans believed that he was just a part of the audience.  However, in every thing I read for this article, it was mentioned that Clay Aiken was a part of long line of celebrities that made fun of Matt Lauer.  Access Hollywood reported that Clay was assigned a seat in the participant room. Whether Clay was a silent observer or a celebrity with a zinger, it was an honor for him to be at the event.

Quote of the Day

It is not always about performance art, but about receiving positive energy from people with positive spirits. Sometimes we can see someone's spirit, and those are the people with great energy. Those are the people that get me through the day, especially on Broadway. -Clay Aiken
