Clay Aiken – So Much Talent In One Place

Can you imagine seeing Hugh Jackman, Bernadette Peters, and Daniel Radcliff on the same stage at the same time?  Well if you were a member of the audience at the New Amsterdam Theatre on Tuesday, December 6th, you were lucky enough to see these stars and many more as they were a part of The 23rd Annual Gypsy of the Year, put on by Broadway Cares/ Equity Fights Aids.

I was fortunate to see this amazing show on Tuesday.  I can’t remember ever seeing so much talent in one theatre before.  The audience was filled with musicians, producers, directors, and fans that are an important part of the Broadway family.

Picture from Playbill

The opening number of the show featured the original cast of Grease.  They were together again for a special 40-year anniversary tribute.  It was so much fun seeing Barry Bostwick who was the original Danny.  He still has the strut and Grease hairstyle.  Adrienne Barbeau, who played Rizzo looked amazing.  I bet she would still fit in her original costumes.  Each actor looked happy to be on stage and it was so much fun to see them 40 years later.

I was thrilled to see Ben Cohn’s name on the program.  He was credited as the creator, music director, and arranger of the Grease opening.  Most Clay Aiken fans already know how talented Ben is as a musician.  He seems to be the “go-to” guy for special shows on Broadway!

A highlight of the program for me was the performance by the Broadway cast of Billy Elliot.  The show is closing on January 8, 2012 so this was a farewell appearance at Gypsy of the Year.  All the actors who have played the role of Billy were on stage.  It was fun to see some of the talented young men who have grown about a foot since their time in the show.

Seventeen Broadway and Off-Broadway companies performed on Tuesday, which means that there were more than 300 actors, singers, and dancers on the stage during the afternoon.

Much like the Easter Bonnet Competition, the Gypsy show is a competition between the different shows.  The shows have six weeks to fundraise for BC/EFA.  Awards are presented to the top fundraisers.  They also have awards for the best presentation during the show.

Picture From Broadwayworld

Hugh Jackman, Bernadette Peters, and Daniel Radcliffe presented the awards for the show.

Seth Rudetsky who is a musician, actor, and columnist for Playbill.com kept the show moving as the host for the afternoon.  Judith Light gave a tribute to those people who lost their fight with Aids.  It was a solemn tribute that ended with a moment of silence.

Last year, the Gypsy of the Year raised $3,776,720.  From all reports, this year topped that amount.  All the official numbers will be available soon.

After the performance, I was able to attend the celebration dinner hosted by Playbill Magazine.  It was held upstairs in Sardi’s.  The first people I ran into were Ben Cohn and Sean McDaniel.  Ben shared that they will be in Raleigh for the Gala.  I think that we have something very special to look forward to.

So…this was my adventure in New York today.  Is there a tie-in to Clay Aiken?  Well, the best I can do is say that Clay has certainly supported Broadway Care/Equity Fights Aids.  He is the one who introduced me to the very worthwhile organization.

Only a few more days until we meet in Raleigh.  Are you packed yet?

I started Wednesday by looking up “Birthday Quotes.”  The following quote by John Oates caught my eye.  You remember John, don’t you?  He is best known as half of the rock duo Hall & Oates.  John’s quote reminded me of another very talented entertainer.

If you look over the years, the styles have changed – the clothes, the hair, the production, the approach to the songs. The icing to the cake has changed flavors. But if you really look at the cake itself, it’s really the same.

Hurrah for the National Inclusion Project and the Pepsi vote!! Happy Birthday Clay!! What a great job by the entire ClayNation!!

Today is World Aids Day

World AIDS Day is held on 1 December each year and is an opportunity for people worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV, show their support for people living with HIV and to commemorate people who have died. World AIDS Day was the first ever global health day and the first one was held in 1988.

This is a day when I thank organizations like Broadway Cares/Equity Fights Aids.  It is an easy organization to support.  They enlist the entire Broadway community in the fundraising for fighting aids  and educating people  about aids…one of their mottos is:  What We Do Together Makes A Difference!

This is a wonderful time to be a fan of Clay Aiken!

Clay Aiken – Find A Unique Gift

By musicfan123 · Comments 13274(10)http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F2011%2F11%2F22%2Fclay-aiken-find-a-unique-gift%2FClay+Aiken+-+Find+A+Unique+Gift2011-11-22+08%3A38%3A59musicfan123http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F%3Fp%3D13274
Tuesday, November 22nd, 2011

I was introduced to Broadway Cares/Equity Fights Aids on May 24, 2004.  As a Clay Aiken fan, I watched with anticipation as Clay took the stage of the New Amsterdam Theatre.  Joining the talented Heather Headley, the two artists sang a wonderful rendition of Can You Feel The Love Tonight from the Lion King.

When it was announced that Clay was singing on Broadway for this wonderful concert, I wanted to know more so I did some Internet research and finally found BC/EFA.  I made my first donation to the organization that night.

Clay has been a great friend and supporter of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights Aids.  While performing on Broadway in Spamalot, Clay actively participated in the Easter Bonnet Competition and the Broadway Bears competition. Last February, Clay was one of 64 performers who participated in Broadway Backwards 6.  Clay brought the house to tears as he sang a beautiful rendition of Home from The Wiz.

There are many ways that we can support this wonderful organization.  Money is tight, but most of us do purchase Holiday gifts.  Instead of fighting the crowds at the mall on Black Friday, why not do some of your shopping at The Broadway Cares Online Store.  Your gift will be unique and you will be supporting a great organization at the same time!

The following are just a few of the MANY items that are available in the shop.

A frosted metropolis rests atop a display of billboards showcasing more than 25 Broadway musicals on our latest collectable snow globe. Tony Award®-nominated designer David Rockwell’s romantic translucent cityscape features several of New York City’s iconic landmarks that light up with a flick of a switch. The soft emanating glow from the buildings and the strains of “New York, New York (A Helluva Town)” will warm your heart with memories of Broadway. This effervescent globe stands 5 ¾” x 7 ½”. Batteries included.    $85.00

Broadway production stage manager Roy Harris has worked with some of the most accomplished actors, directors, designers, technicians and stage doormen working in the theatre. For the past ten years, he has hosted brunches before the Sunday matinees in which the aforementioned artists shared their culinary gifts, thus adding “Chef” to their resumes. In his third book for BC/EFA involving theatre and food, Harris has compiled 88 recipes from these delightful brunches, adding anecdotes about the chef , the dish and the production, too. “Chefs” include Cynthia Nixon, John Lithgow, Jill Clayburgh, John Dossett, James Frain and Laura Linney. His previous cookbook, More Recipes and Reminiscence, is also available in our store.   $20.00

Now in its 24th year, our Tony Award® T-shirt continues to be a collector’s item. The nominated shows and the BC/EFA logo form a frame around the signatures of the nominees, printed in aqua blue ink. The maroon-inked Tony Award® symbol also appears on this pistachio green 100% cotton tee. Al Pacino, Edie Falco, Patti LuPone, Joel Grey, Vanessa Redgrave, Sutton Foster, Frances McDormand, Trey Parker and Matt Stone are just a few of the over 100 signatures included on this year’s shirt.  $15.00

Trim your tree in classy Broadway style with this exclusive white glass ornament which features the logos of more than Broadway musicals.Logos include:
The Addams Family, American Idiot, Anything Goes, Baby It’s You!, Billy Elliot, Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson, The Book of Mormon, Catch Me If You Can, Chicago, Elf, How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, Jersey Boys, La Cage aux Folles, The Lion King, Mamma Mia!, Mary Poppins, Memphis, Million Dollar Quartet, The People in the Picture, The Phantom of the Opera, Priscilla Queen of the Desert, Rock of Ages, The Scottsboro Boys, Sister Act, Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, Wicked, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown and Wonderland.  $20.00

I wish that I were going to be in New York City on Sunday, September 25, 2011.  I would love to stroll through Broadway and attend the Broadway Cares/Equity Fights Aids, Flea Market.  Not only would I have the opportunity to meet some amazing Broadway stars, I could get many unique gifts to jump-start my holiday shopping.

Usually housed in Shubert Alley, the flea market will be held on 44th street between 7th and 8th this year.  It seems that construction on the underground parking made the move a must.

The following is the Press Release for this great event:

THE 25TH ANNUAL
BROADWAY FLEA MARKET
& GRAND AUCTION
TO STRETCH ACROSS BROADWAY INTO TIMES SQUARE

THREE PRE-EVENT AUCTION PACKAGES OFFER
A VIP BEHIND-THE-SCENES TOUR OF THE BC/EFA FLEA MARKET,
FOLLIES OPENING NIGHT EXPERIENCE,

AND FINAL CATCH ME IF YOU CAN PERFORMANCE AND PARTY

PRESENTED BY AND BENEFITING BROADWAY CARES/EQUITY FIGHTS AIDS

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 25, 2011
10 AM – 7 PM
TIMES SQUARE & WEST 44TH STREET

Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS presents the 25TH Annual Broadway Flea Market & Grand Auction which will be held from 10 AM – 7 PM on Sunday, September 25 in Times Square & on West 44th Street. This not-to-be-missed event for every Broadway theatergoer is free and open to the public.

Broadway dreams will come true for theatre fans looking to find showbiz treasures and memorabilia, meet their favorite stars and bid on one-of-a-kind items and once-in-a-lifetime experiences like walk-on roles on Broadway and TV.

For the first time ever, the Broadway Flea Market & Grand Auction will encompass all of 44th Street between Seventh and Eighth Avenues, and will stretch across Broadway into Times Square, filling the wide pedestrian plaza between 43rd and 44thStreets.

It’s the only time in the event’s long history – not counting the infamous overnight move to Roseland in 2009 because of torrential downpours – that Shubert Alley will not be used for any portion of the Flea Market & Grand Auction. Construction on the parking garage below 1515 Broadway, which also extends underneath Shubert Alley, is precipitating the change.

“We look forward to turning this year’s construction challenge into a golden, sun-drenched opportunity to expand into Times Square’s wonderful pedestrian plazas,” BC/EFA executive director Tom Viola said. “Filling Broadway between 43rd and 44thStreets, there will be booths overflowing with theatrical memorabilia and at the end of the afternoon the Grand Auction. I hope you will take the few steps across Seventh Avenue with us, as you enjoy the high energy and activity that every year stretches down 44th Street to Eighth Avenue. Whatever the terrain, the best of Broadway shows up for the Broadway Flea Market. I hope you will too!”

Dozens of tables from Broadway’s most popular shows will set up shop for what Time Out New York calls one of the “Best Once-a-Year Markets” in New York City. Fans can buy that lost cast recording, signed show posters and Playbills, rare costume sketches, props and special gifts theatre-lovers can’t find anywhere else.

Hourly silent auction lots will give way to the live Grand Auction at the end of the day featuring a collection of unique items and experiences that will offer something for everyone.

One of the most popular sites at Broadway’s “one-day sale” is the Celebrity Autograph Table at which your favorite stars from Broadway and Off-Broadway sign autographs and pose for photos in exchange for donations to BC/EFA.

To kick-start the excitement, three pre-event auction packages are now open for bidding online. One package offers the ultimate VIP experience at the Flea Market & Grand Auction, including an exclusive “line-hopper pass” and opportunity to meet many of the participating stars with a personal celebrity liaison and escort for the day. Another package features two tickets to eagerly anticipated opening night of Follies at Broadway’s Marquis Theatre, including passes to the opening night party. The third kick-off package includes two tickets to the final Broadway performance of Catch Me If You Can and passes to the exclusive cast party afterward. Details on all three packages are available at broadwaycares.org/bidnow.

Specific items for sale at the Flea Market, other packages to be offered at the Grand Auction and stars to appear at the Celebrity Autograph Table will be announced in September on broadwaycares.org, on Twitter and on Facebook.

The 25TH Annual Broadway Flea Market & Grand Auction is sponsored by United Airlines and The New York Times.

Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS is one of the nation’s leading industry-based, nonprofit AIDS fundraising and grant-making organizations.  By drawing upon the talents, resources and generosity of the American theatre community, since 1988 BC/EFA has raised more than $195 million for essential services for people with AIDS and other critical illnesses across the United States.

BC/EFA awards annual grants to more than 400 AIDS and family service organizations nationwide and is the major supporter of seven programs at The Actors Fund, including the HIV/AIDS Initiative, the Phyllis Newman Women’s Health Initiative and the Al Hirschfeld Free Health Clinic.

For more information, please visit the Broadway Cares online broadwaycares.org.

If you are in the area, please stop by and support this wonderful organization.  They have so many ways that they support the Broadway community.  Maybe you can get a good start on your holiday shopping.

Clay Aiken has participated in many fundraisers for BC/EFA.  The last big event he was in was last January when he performed in Broadway Backwards, an amazing concert that raised $281,243.  His performance of Home from the show, The Wiz, was a highlight of the evening.

Clay Aiken – Over 500 Bears!

By musicfan123 · Comments 11799(7)http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F2011%2F09%2F03%2Fclay-aiken-over-500-bears%2FClay+Aiken+-+Over+500+Bears%212011-09-03+08%3A11%3A18musicfan123http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F%3Fp%3D11799

Since 1998, Broadway Cares/Equity Fights Aids has hosted the Broadway Bears Auction.

Each year, the North American Bear Company donates approximately 40 dark green, naked bears to BC/EFA.  They are then given to the talented Broadway designers who spend countless hours creating detailed costumes that represent their Broadway production.

In 14 years, over 500 handmade Broadway Bears have raised more than $1.6 million for Broadway Cares.

I was introduced to this great event when Clay Aiken was on Broadway in Spamalot.  In 2008, Clay Aiken and David Hyde Pierce signed the Spamalot Bear, named Sir Robin.  It sold for $17,000.

In 2009, Spamalot came in first again when Sir Robin, signed by Clay, sold for $16,000.

Spamalot went all out in 2009 when they designed and created the Sir Robin Bear. Since “musical theatre” is Sir Robin’s Grail, it was fitting that the bear is dressed to be a song-and-dance man.  The detail in the costume of this bear is amazing. The teal-lined jacket is an Italian wool-gabardine and the lapels are hand-beaded with 375 peridot, green and silver beads. HandmadeSwarovski-crystal and rhinestone buttons decorate the jacket front and sleeves.

The amazing checkerboard pattern of the vest was created with 1,076 beads and 80 Swarovski crystals. The artist was particularly careful with the shoes that are silver and white.  They are also decorated with Swarovski crystals. More than 30 hours of work and love went into hand-beading the more than 1500 beads and crystals.

Both wins by Spamalot received some great publicity for both Clay and the show.  I found an article for both years that I thought were fun to read.  I hope you enjoy them.

Clay Aiken – 7,500 People Know What To Do!

Broadway Barks is an annual animal charity event held in New York City to promote the adoption of shelter animals. The event was founded in 1999 by Bernadette Peters and her friend Mary Tyler Moore along with many other people who wanted to do something for animals.

The event has been held every July since 1999 in Shubert Alley, a place that is well known to many Clay fans. The first adopt-a-thon was held on July 24, 1999, and benefited five animal welfare shelters and groups:

This year, Broadway Barks will help many of New York City’s shelter animals find permanent homes.  It will also help inform the residents of New York about the plight of the thousands of homeless dogs and cats in the city.  The festivities will be held on Saturday, July 9th from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.  The event, produced by Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, will again take place in Shubert Alley. Celebrity presentations of pets from citywide animal shelters will begin at 5:30 pm.

Last year, Broadway Barks attracted an audience of more than 7,500 theater fans, pet owners and animal lovers and Broadway stars from the many shows playing in New York.  Twenty-seven animal shelters from the New York City area participated in the program along with many Broadway stars.  There were a total of more than 200 adoptions last year.

The event is free. Funds raised from a raffle, silent auction, signed memorabilia sales and donations are distributed to the participating shelters and rescue groups and to the Picasso Veterinary Fund, which is administered by the Mayor’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals and provides grants to shelters and rescue groups to cover extraordinary veterinary costs.

I spent Sunday night watching The 65th Annual Tony Awards.  It was exciting seeing a snippet of the wonderful shows that are on Broadway right now.

I came away from this show with some interesting thoughts:

  • There is so much fabulous talent on Broadway.
  • I can’t wait to go back to Broadway and see some live Broadway shows.
  • So many times I said to myself, “Clay Aiken would really shine in this role.”
  • I am in awe that Broadway Cares/Equity Fights Aids works so hard for so many people.

When, during the broadcast, it was announced that the cast of Memphis was going to perform, I listened carefully.  When the show told of the over 1,000 students who had the opportunity to attend their first Broadway show, I got emotional.  And then I heard that BC/EFA was one of the sponsors for this exciting experience.  I was excited and proud that so many Clay Aiken fans support this amazing organization.

After the broadcast was over, I wanted to find out more about this interesting project.  I found the following article about the project.  Please read the following from The Kansas City Starlight Theater Blog.

World-renowned watchmaker Audemars Piguet partnered with Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS (BC/EFA) and the Tony Awards, to host 1,100 New York City students at their very first Broadway show. Through “Inspire Change,” an initiative launched by the producers of Memphis, students from public schools and AIDS Service organizations throughout the 5 boroughs of Manhattan enjoyed this special performance of Memphis in addition to in-school workshops and a “talk-back” with the cast and producers of the show and representatives from the Tony Awards.

At the end of the performance, all 1,100 students surprised the cast by jumping to their feet to join in for the show’s finale, “Steal Your Rock and Roll.”   The students, who had been practicing both the lyrics and choreography for weeks, took to the aisles and stage to join the excited cast members for the song.
François-Henry Bennahmias, President & CEO of Audemars Piguet North America, says, “After two incredibly successful years partnering with the Tony Awards, this year we are excited to make a direct impact in our community.  Audemars Piguet is proud to offer 1,100 students their first Broadway experience, as part of our commitment to New York City’s theater community, the Tonys and Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS.  Music has touched my life and I hope that this special experience will foster a lifelong love of music among these students, too.”

“The cast flipped out when they saw the whole audience stand up and dance!”  says Sue Frost, producer of Memphis, “It was absolutely incredible, I wish it could happen every night!  We’re so grateful to Audemars Piguet, BC/EFA and the Tony Awards for joining Memphis in our effort to inspire change.”

“Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS is grateful to Audemars Piguet and the Tony Awards for the opportunity to work with the producers of MEMPHIS and “Inspire Change” on such a special day for so many in underserved public schools and social service agencies across New York City,” said Tom Viola, BC/EFA’s executive director.  “The stories of personal courage in MEMPHIS reflect the challenges these kids face each day.   To see their lives portrayed on stage creates self-esteem that encourages young people to make healthy choices outside the classroom.”

“We would like to thank our partners, Audemars Piguet and Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS for giving these amazing students such a spectacular opportunity, and for helping to create a moment of Broadway history,” said Charlotte St. Martin, executive director for The Broadway League & Howard Sherman, executive director of the American Theatre Wing – the two organizations who present the Tony Awards.

Audemars Piguet will continue their support of Broadway through their third annual sponsorship of the red carpet at the 65th Annual Tony Awards, which will be broadcast in a live three-hour ceremony from the Beacon Theatre in New York City, on the CBS television network on Sunday, June 12, 2011.

It is not surprising that Clay Aiken supports BC/EFA.  This organization raises millions every year to help all people…students or seniors…gay or straight…Thank you for all you do!

Did you watch The Tony’s on TV?  What did you think?

Clay Aiken – All The World’s A Stage

“All the world’s a stage

and all the men and women merely players:

they have their exits and entrances

and one man in his time plays many parts…”

…William Shakespeare

Last night, I found an interesting article by Arlene Schulman.  Arlene has over 25 years of theatrical experience in NYC and NJ.  She has directed many shows and has a passion for Shakespeare.  I thought her information about Broadway actors was interesting

A Broadway actor is one who works on Broadway.  There are very, very few of these.  Broadway is a very small community with very few jobs that thousands of actors want.  The way to become a Broadway actor – especially in musical theatre – is to:
1) work your tail off studying acting, voice and dance – only the very best get the chance to play Broadway;
2) work in lots of small professional and regional theatres outside NYC to earn your Equity card (Broadway does not hire non-Equity actors);
3) climb over everyone you know – Broadway is about business and status and prestige – it is a cutthroat business;
4) audition constantly – waiting all day for cattle calls were you get seen for 1 minute;
5) act in lots of unpaid NYC showcases in the hopes that you will be able to come to the attention of an agent who will want to represent you – most Broadway leads and supporting roles are cast by audition subnission by agents and are seldom available to unrepresented actors;
6) be prepared for years of rejection and disappointment – with thousands of actors auditioning for each role, many of which are precast anyway, the odds of getting cast are minimal and the more you are seen the better your chances;
7) network constantly all over NYC – getting cast in NYC is about who you know;
8) and be sure to find a good day job – living in NYC is very, very expensive and unless you are doing Broadway or Off-Broadway, most NYC theatre is unpaid or, at best, very minimally paid.

Acting, like any other profession – and more than most, requires in-depth training.  And if you want a career in musical theatre then you must study acting, singing and dance.  There was a time when a singer could take a lead in a Broadway musical, but more and more musicals require even the leads to be triple threats…And even more so for those not the leads.

If you are a professional, well-trained actor/singer it is possible to get musical roles without formal dance training, but you must be able to move well on stage – and that means more than just being able to walk gracefully.  It means that you can learn dance moves, that you are familiar with the basic dance steps, that you can look like you are doing more complicated moves without actually dancing.  But the more dance training you have, the more roles you will be eligible for.  And if all you want to do is musical theatre, then you better be sure that you can do any role they throw at you, or you will never earn enough to eat.

Even actors who aim for all theatre, and film and tv as well, have no financial security.  Less than 2% of all professional union actors are making a living as an actor.  Most are working at day jobs while they pursue their acting career, and the unemployment rate in the acting community is over 95%!  So if you are going to limit yourself to just a tiny portion of the acting field – musical theatre – then you better be sure that you are exceptionally talented, exceptionally well-trained, and able to do every part of your craft.

As far as how long to take acting and voice lessons – the simple answer is, that if you want to do this as a career, you will be taking voice and acting classes all your life.

Remember, acting is one of the most difficult professions there is .

When I read this, I thought of the talented Mr. Aiken who starred on Broadway and wowed the Broadway World.  Yes…..he is very talented!!

The remarkable SueReu put together another wonderful video.  Part 5 of her Clay Aiken – A Retrospective,  features Clay and his many performances on Broadway.

Thank you, Sue, for another wonderful video.

Quote of the Day

It is not always about performance art, but about receiving positive energy from people with positive spirits. Sometimes we can see someone's spirit, and those are the people with great energy. Those are the people that get me through the day, especially on Broadway. -Clay Aiken
