The National Inclusion Project grew out of the relationship between Clay Aiken and Diane Bubel and Diane’s then 13-year-old son, Mike who had been diagnosed with autism.

Clay pursued a degree in special education from UNC-Charlotte. He completed an independent study project where he created a foundation that focused on providing the support system for recreational and educational programs around the country to open doors to children with disabilities that had thus far remained closed.  Both Diane and Clay realized that an organized effort could encourage and facilitate community inclusion and empowerment of individuals with disabilities.

This shared goal grew into reality on July 28, 2003. Since that time, the National Inclusion Project has established itself as a leading voice for inclusion.

The National Inclusion Project serves to bridge the gap that exists between young people with disabilities and the world around them. They partner with communities and inclusive programs creating awareness about the possibilities that inclusion can bring.

Many of you are aware that The National Inclusion Project is involved in the Facebook giving challenge done by Chase Community Giving. Over the weekend, some others had a surge in voting and they have fallen out of the top 200 and $20,000. (That’s 2 camps!)

They need your help, please. Pass this on, put on message boards, blogs, etc. If you have another charity you are voting for in the challenge, see if there’s a mutual voting relationship you can use. Creative, desperate, enthusiastic…whatever you have to be, it’s worth it. J

Here’s the process:
1. Click: http://apps.facebook.com/chasecommunitygiving/charities/200146446-bubel-aiken-foundation-inc
2. Make sure that you’ve hit “Like” at the top of the page for Chase.
3. Click the button to Vote.
4. Then click the button to Share on your Facebook wall.
5. Only one vote per person allowed.

The following  is one of the most beautiful videos I have seen on The National Inclusion Project.  You really need to watch this video.  If your heart doesn’t swell with pride for all that the National Inclusion Project has accomplished, or if you don’t immediately ask what you can do to help………..well………you get the point.  SueReu, you are some amazing lady.  Thank you for all you do for Clay and The National Inclusion Project.

Clay Aiken – Believe

Sunday, October 18th, 2009

Last evening, at the Marriott in Raleigh, North Carolina, The National Inclusion Project celebrated their annual Champions Gala and benefit dinner.  The sold out event was filled with love, friendship, pride of accomplishment and wonderful music.

For the third time, Lynda Loveland served as the host for the event.  She did an excellent job.  Lynda was moved to tears more than once as she listened and watched the stories of the honorees of the evening.

Diane Bubel’s speech was wonderful.  She was heartfelt and professional as she reported on some of the accomplishments of the National Inclusion Project and let us know what was in the future.

A high-light of the evening was the announcement that the National Inclusion Project won the Christie Cookie contest.  A check was presented just prior to the event and the representative from the company was amazed at what she learned as she watched the program.

The honorees were amazing.  Sarah Cronk and Sarah Herr founded the Sparkle Effect.  They recognized that students with disabilities don’t just want to cheer, they want to fit in.  Sarah’s presentation at the Gala was polished and showed all of us that teens have a lot to give to society and that they can make huge changes in the world.

The Mitsubishi Electric and Electronics America  helps young people with disabilities reach their potential.  Since 1991, the company has invested over 9 million, supporting these programs, but are even more proud of the 30,000 volunteer hours they have given to their communities.  Their mission is to make a difference one individual at a time.

Patrick Henry Hughes is an amazing young man who entertained the Gala with his wit, strength and music.  Born with severe physical challenges, Patrick has been blind and in a wheelchair his entire life.  At the age of 9 months, Patrick started playing the piano and music changed his life.

In college, he was a member of the Louisville Marching Band.  He played the trumpet while his father pushed him in his wheelchair through the marching routines.

Patrick entertained the audience by performing two songs while he accompanied himself on the piano. His rendition of “Believe” by Brooks and Dunn and  “If I Can Dream”, made famous by Elvis Presley brought tears to many eyes.

The auction, led by Joe Veasey, was lots of fun.  Clay slipped on the Tour Jacket, proving that he could still fit in it.  Included in the auction was the shirt he wore during the American Idol of  “Bridge Over Troubled Water”,  a dinner with Clay for 10 people, and a day with Clay.  Some of the bidding was fast and furious.

Clay Aiken ended the evening by performing four songs.  It was wonderful to see him singing again.  Four professional musicians from the New York area joined Clay.  He ended the program with a wonderful performance of “Moon River.”

The entire event was very professional and well-organized.  The food was good, the tables, although close together, were set beautifully.  The video presentations were well-done.  Their production quality was well-down and the background stories of the Gala honorees gave the audience a better idea of their stories.

Clay seemed relaxed and happy.  He was joined by Faye, his grandmother, Jaymes, Jamie, Brett and his friend, Cameron.

The Gala was a wonderful success.  It was an exciting night, filled with lots of love and a pride in the work of the National Inclusion Project.

Clay Aiken – A Leading Voice For Inclusion

By musicfan123 · Comments 5810(22)http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F2009%2F08%2F06%2Fclay-aiken-a-leading-voice-for-inclusion%2FClay+Aiken+-+A+Leading+Voice+For+Inclusion2009-08-06+07%3A44%3A51musicfan123http%3A%2F%2Fwww.claynewsnetwork.com%2F%3Fp%3D5810

It started out as a project for college graduation.  Today, it is a leading voice for inclusion so that all children can be fully immersed in society.  It is the National Inclusion Project.

By this time, most of us know the history and the hard work that has been put into the National Inclusion Project. And I am sure we all want to congratulate Clay Aiken, Diane Bubel and the entire staff of the National Inclusion Project for all their success.  It has been a joy to watch their vision become reality.

Like many of you, I spent some time reading the new web-site for the NIP.  It is all very impressive.   I was amazed at the incredible list of names that are tied to the Project in its quest for inclusion.

The National Inclusion Project works with many different organizations including:

“YMCAs, Best Buddies International, Boys & Girls Clubs, CampFire USA, 4H, the ARC – as well as many other local parks and recreation departments, community centers, and privately-run programs.”

And look at the impressive list of institutions that have formed partnerships with The National Inclusion Project.  They include:

“Johns Hopkins University’s National Center for Summer Learning, the University of Massachusetts-Boston’s Center for Social Development and Education, the University of New Hampshire’s Institute on Disability, the University of Minnesota’s Institute on Community Integration, and the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill’s Frank Porter Graham Child Development Center.”

Next, I visited the Annual Report.  It was interesting to read about the 35 programs across the country where children of all abilities have a chance to play and learn together.

Perhaps the most impressive statement on the page is short, but telling:

“During the financial crisis of 2008, the National Inclusion Project managed funds very conservatively and did not experience any investment losses.  In addition, 89% of every dollar spent went directly to inclusive programs.”

This makes it easy to decide to support the Project, especially when you know the money is being used correctly.

If you haven’t had a chance, take a look at the new web-site. It is full of interesting facts and you will come away with a feeling of pride for this great accomplishment.  Clay, Diane and their dedicated staff have done so much in bringing awareness of inclusion to the public.

Clay Aiken – Visit With Oprah

By musicfan123 · Comments 4945(18)http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F2009%2F06%2F10%2Fclay-aiken-visit-with-oprah%2FClay+Aiken+-+Visit+With+Oprah2009-06-10+07%3A23%3A17musicfan123http%3A%2F%2Fwww.claynewsnetwork.com%2F%3Fp%3D4945

“The Oprah Winfrey Show,” is the #1-rated talk series. It premiered on September 8, 1986. Hosted by Oprah Winfrey, the most successful talk show host and producer in the history of television, the series airs on 216 stations representing more than 99% of the country.

“The Oprah Winfrey Show” has remained the number one talk show for 20 consecutive seasons. Produced by her own production company, Harpo Productions, Inc., the show is seen by an estimated 48 million viewers a week in the United States and is broadcast internationally in 126 countries.

How exciting and scary it must have been for Ruben Studdard and Clay Aiken to be guests of Oprah for the entire hour on June 10, 2003.

Ruben started the program by chatting with Oprah who seemed pleased to have Ruben on her show.  Ruben sang his single “Flying Without Wings.”

After Ruben’s number, Oprah introduced Clay, who received an enthusiastic response from the audience. Clay was awestruck and remarked how exciting it was to be on Oprah. The audience saw some footage of Clay preparing songs and rehearsing as well as a peek at his photo shoot for Rolling Stone magazine. Clay said that he was amazed that he was going to be on the cover and very excited.

Oprah brought Diane Bubel and her daughter to Chicago and Clay seemed genuinely surprised to see them.

Clay performed his newly released single, “This is the Night,” and Ruben sat in the front row next to Oprah, singing right along with him. The audience went crazy and one woman appeared onscreen wiping away her tears.

After Clay’s performance, Oprah introduced Justin Guarini, who also had his CD drop on Tuesday. Justin is still blown away by his instant fame and told us that he has done more in a year than most people ever dream of.

Oprah ended the show by telling the audience that they would get copies of all three CDs.

After Oprah is a half-hour show that appears on the Oxygen channel and offers more of a candid discussion. It is taped right after the show. During this program, the topics for discussion ran from audience signs to Simon…from song selection on AI to instant fame.

A member of the audience asked Clay what his first extravagant gift will be for his mother. He answered that he is planning on paying off their house. Ruben didn’t want to tell even though his mother tried to get it out of him the entire time he was home for the video shoot.

It was  an exciting show and both Ruben and Clay seemed open and relaxed.  It was rumored that Clay was feeling ill after having an allergic reaction before the show.  However, he still gave it his all and was an excellent guest on the show.

The only videos available for this show are very poor so we hope you will  be satisfied with some still pictures.  It is fun to see Clay and Ruben enjoying this special event in their lives.  Don’t they both look young?

The Bubel/Aiken Foundation awarded $15,000 to introduce Let’s All Play, a recreational after-school program to a wonderful organization called Special Kids Crusade.

Special Kids CrusadeSpecial Kids Crusade is a private, parent-founded organization that is dedicated to making a positive impact on the lives of developmentally disabled children and their families.  They are headquartered in Monterey, County, CA.

The grant from the Bubel/Aiken Foundation will help the Special Kids Crusade partner with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Monterey County to build a positive program that will allow children with disabilities to enjoy a social recreational experience in an inclusive setting.

Besides the Let’s All Play program, Special Kids Crusade has many exciting programs for their group.  They host Mom’s Night Out on Saturdays, and have a VIP Basketball program so that all kids have the opportunity to learn basketball basics.  They also publish a Family Resource Directory which was created to help families identify regional advocacy,  legal services and other supportive services in Monterey County.

Quote of the Day

It is not always about performance art, but about receiving positive energy from people with positive spirits. Sometimes we can see someone's spirit, and those are the people with great energy. Those are the people that get me through the day, especially on Broadway. -Clay Aiken
