Clay Aiken – So Much Besides Taxes!

By musicfan123 · Comments 15691(11)http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F2012%2F04%2F15%2Fclay-aiken-so-much-besides-taxes%2FClay+Aiken+-+So+Much+Besides+Taxes%212012-04-15+07%3A53%3A34musicfan123http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F%3Fp%3D15691
Sunday, April 15th, 2012

It is April 15th – Most of us look at this date and think taxes! But…this year taxes are due on Tuesday, April 17.  The extra break was granted because April 15 is a Sunday this year, and Monday is Emancipation Day, a holiday in Washington D.C. that celebrates the freeing of slaves in the district.

BUT…instead of taxes, I would rather think about some of the fun things that Clay Aiken did on April 15th.

April 15, 2003 -  American Idol presented the Top 7 performers on Billy Joel Night.  Each singer was required to sing a song made famous by Billy Joel.

Clay Aiken was the last performer on this night and the judges remarks from this performance have been quoted many times.  Most Clay fans will remember “I just can’t wait till you let loose and dance a little more!”  Then Clay’s answer… baby-steps!!

Then, who could forget Simon’s   “I prefer you when I shut my eyes.”

Tell Her About It was a wonderful choice for Clay to make.  Starting out as a ballad and then, WOW, he changed it to up-tempo.  It was the night that Clay changed his whole style and delivery.  He never missed a step.  When was the last time you watch Clay sing this on American Idol?  Enjoy!!

April 15, 2004 – Clay was in Kansas City, MO.  Clay and Diane Bubel were at part of Hallmark’s Kaleidoscope.  Clay and Diane participated in a private art session.  The program integrated children with special needs with their typical peers.  They paired up to produce art projects that were based on the theme,  How Art Defines Me.  From the pictures, it looks like Clay had as much fun as the kids!

April 15, 2004 – After a day of working with the kids on their art projects, Clay performed at the Kember Arena as part of the Independent Tour.  This performance was special because it was almost the end of the successful tour for Clay and Kelly Clarkson.  This performance produced some fun pictures.

April 15, 2005 – This was National Youth Service Day.  Clay was in Hollywood, Florida and he joined a group of Best Buddies  kids to plant trees in the area.

National Youth Service Day is a public awareness and education campaign that highlights the amazing contributions that young people make to their communities 365 days a year. As the largest service event in the world, it mobilizes millions of young people to address the needs of their communities, and educates the public, the media, and policymakers about the year-round contributions of young people as community leaders.

April 15, 2012 –  Clay Aiken will be seen on NBC as a contestant on the popular show, Celebrity Apprentice.  The show tonight is episode 9 and is titled Puppets Up.  The show should be filled with lots of fun, laughs, tears, and drama.  This show is NEVER boring!

Don’t forget to check in on Monday.  The reviews, articles and pictures of Celebrity Apprentice will be posted throughout the day as they become available.

Sometimes the best things that happen in life are planned with each and every detail in place. However, sometimes spontaneity takes over and something even more exciting happens. From all accounts, that’s what happened on March 7, 2004 in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania.

Kelly Clarkson and Clay Aiken were two of the best selling new artists in 2003. They joined forces in early 2004 for their first major nationwide headlining tour. Called the “Independent” tour, the two RCA stars performed in 30 cities. Because they were two of America’s most talented young entertainers, they alternated as headliners on the tour.

After stops in North Carolina, Florida, Georgia, Washington D.C. and New York, the artists found their way to Pennsylvania and the beautiful area of Wilkes-Barre.

Kelly opened the show with an exciting set that showed off her range and love of singing and entertaining. Her performance of Beautiful Disaster was, according to some fans, “off the charts.” It was evident that the crowd liked Kelly, but because so many did not stand during her performance, most speculated that it was a Clay crowd.

During intermission, a real buzz started up in the Wachovia Arena. Many of the fans knew in advance about what to expect, but when Clay came in from the back singing Kyrie, the entire audience rose to their feet. According to reports from fans, Clay was energetic and having a wonderful time. Everything was going as planned and the crowd was excited.

But, as with all plans, there can be a twist. That night, the unexpected event ended up the highlight of the evening. Clay and his back-up singers were settled on stools across the front of the stage. They were joined by only two other musicians, the guitarist and the pianist. It was time for the acoustic section of the concert.

When Clay started singing Measure of A Man, he sang the first word and immediately, most of the audience began to softly sing along. Clay held the mike out to the audience and the singing sounded beautiful. Clay stopped singing and signaled to his back-ups singers to also stop so the crowd could continue. According to one fan; “It was like our love song to Clay and he knew that we meant it for him.” Another fan said; “The crowd literally poured its heart out singing to him and the look on his face and on the faces of Angela and Quiana as they wiped tears away – just overwhelming. I get choked up just thinking about it. It was such a spontaneous moment and I feel so blessed to have been there.”

The rest of the acoustic set was particularly beautiful and everyone on the stage and in the audience realized that they had just experienced a very special moment.

The Wilkes-Barre concert continued with Clay’s exciting performance of When Doves Cry. Clay was ready to have fun and seemed to be having a good time kidding around with his back-up singer, Angela. At one point, Angela pulled Clay so hard that he stumbled. He laughed so hard that he could not continue singing for a few moments.

The end of his set found Clay sitting on a speaker singing The Way. Somehow, the musicians missed a cue and the beginning of the beautiful song was way off. Clay stopped and said that they were going to start again and after a bit of laughter from the musicians and the audience, Clay sang the song beautifully.

As always, Kelly and Clay ended the concert with a duet of Open Arms. They showed everyone that they were, indeed good friends.

Wilkes-Barre and the Pennsylvania Clay fans welcomed the Independent Tour with lots of excitement. They had a large pre-party before the concert and participated in signing the banner for Clay that traveled from venue to venue. They also put up a billboard on the highway welcoming Clay and the tour to their area. The Wachovia Arena holds around 8000 people and was 98% sold. Pennsylvania certainly showed their love and support for Clay that night.

SueReu put together a wonderful video highlighting the special performance in Wilkes-Barre. ENJOY!!!!

Clay Aiken – One Night Only!!

Clay Aiken toured throughout the United States on the Independent Tour in 2004.  Clay and Kelly Clarkson were co-headliners for the 30 shows.  The tour started and Charlotte, NC, wound its way to California and ended in St. Paul, MN.

The 4th stop on the tour was at the American Airlines Arena in Miami, Florida.  Both Clay and Kelly performed with enthusiasm and the audience was excited and supportive of the two musicians.

BUT….the big question from this night was…….why did Clay wear the great outfit only once?  Why did he decide to abandon the great combination of blue shirt and jeans?  So many fans have said the look was their favorite look for the tour.  Did you like this look?  Why do you think Clay decided to toss this outfit aside?

March 1st, 2010……..The ClayNation is still talking about Clay Aiken and his wonderful speech at the Human Rights Campaign Gala in Raleigh,  North Carolina.  The buzz he created by his heartfelt speech reached both his fans and the news sites throughout the United States.  There are over 300 articles reporting on Clay’s participation and his amazing speech.

March 1st, 2004………..The ClayNation was talking about the Independent Tour and Clay and Kelly.  There were probably over 300 articles on the internet about the exciting tour.  On March 1, 2004, Clay and Kelly were featured on the MTV show TRL.  The tour had just begun and TRL visited the two stars as they got ready for their concert in Charlotte.  The show filmed the stars as they rode their bus, warmed up for their concert and even showed a few clips from the concert.

I didn’t remember this clip, but I loved seeing it and both Kelly and Clay at the beginning of their remarkable careers.  The video does have two stops, but keep watching.  It is really fun!!

Clay Aiken Performs Kyrie

The wind blows hard against this mountainside
Across the sea into my soul
It reaches in to where I cannot hide
Setting my feet upon the road
My heart is old it holds my memories
My body burns a gemlike flame
Somewhere between the soul & soft machine
Is where I find myself again

Kyrie Eleison
Down the road that I must travel
Kyrie Eleison
Through the darkness of the night
Kyrie Eleison
Where I'm going will you follow
Kyrie Eleison
On a highway in the light

When I was young I thought of growing old
Of what my life would mean to me
Would I have followed down my chosen road
Or only wished what I could be

Do you remember this song?  “Kyrie” was a huge hit by the group known as Mr. Mister.  A product of the L.A. session-musician community, Mr. Mister enjoyed a brief but huge burst of popularity during the mid-’80s, crafting radio-ready pop/rock. While they disappeared almost as quickly as they arrived on the scene, their two number one hits, “Broken Wings” and “Kyrie,” remain enduring classics of ’80s mainstream pop.

“Kyrie Eleison” is Greek for “Lord, have mercy.” It is used as a prayer in both Roman Catholic and Greek Orthodox services.

The song “Kyrie” is credited to lead singer Richard Page, keyboardist Steve George and lyricist John Lang. There was a rumor that Page wrote the song after being attacked.  But that rumor was found to be false when John Lang told the Chicago Sun-Times in July of 2004:

“Richard Page did write the music and melody, but I am the one who wrote the lyrics. I got the inspiration from singing it as a kid in an Episcopal church in Phoenix. Also, ‘Kyrie’ had nothing to do with Richard being assaulted, mainly because it wasn’t Richard who was assaulted – it was me! But that happened 3 years before writing ‘Kyrie,’ and had nothing to do with that song.”

When Kyrie became a hit, very few people listening to Top 40 radio had any idea that they were singing “Lord Have Mercy, Down the Road that I must travel!” The religious significance was mostly lost.

This was Mr. Mister’s second #1 hit in the US. The first was “Broken Wings.”

February 24th, 2004 was the first concert for Clay Aiken’s Independent Tour.  Held at the Charlotte Coliseum, Clay performed the second half of the concert that he shared with Kelly Clarkson.

Clay’s entrance that night to “Kyrie” was electrifying.  The entire audience in Charlotte tried to figure out where Clay was and where the singing was coming from.

Hearing Clay sing “Kyrie” on his Independent Tour was something I will never forget.

The following video is wonderful.  It is from Aflack and is a part of her Road To Independence series.  Besides having great footage of Clay singing, she added some great humor to the video.

Now, how can we convince Clay to perform this great song again?

Producing the Clay Aiken News Network (CANN)  is a work in progress.  We published our first blog on January 11, 2009,  so we are almost 5 months old.  We like to think that we do more things right than wrong, but have learned that there are days that things just don’t go the way you plan.

As you might have seen, we expanded our site last week-end.  We up-graded to a bigger server so that the readers can access our site more easily and that we can provide more exciting Clay-related “stuff” to our friends.  So………………A CANN EXCLUSIVE.

This week-end we have added a wonderful set of videos.  SueReu is our resident video expert and she has worked hard to put together a set of videos of the Independent Tour.  The tour ran from February 24 – April 16, 2004 and was full of exciting music, humor and dancing.  This set of 14 videos highlights songs like Kyrie, When Doves Cry, and the Acoustic Set.

We think that this is a perfect way to bring together the performances into one package for those who remember the tour. But it will also be a great way to introduce the Independent Tour to new fans or to others who are seeking out information on Clay.  We are hoping that SueReu will continue her hard work and present us with videos on another Clay Tour soon.

It’s easy to see the videos.  Go up to the VIdeo Drop-Down Menu that is just above the Banner.  Hit Tours and you are there.

Have fun watching the videos and be sure and thank SueReu for all her hard work.

Quote of the Day

It is not always about performance art, but about receiving positive energy from people with positive spirits. Sometimes we can see someone's spirit, and those are the people with great energy. Those are the people that get me through the day, especially on Broadway. -Clay Aiken
