Clay Aiken – A Huge Success!

The Xcel Energy Center is a sports arena in Saint Paul, Minnesota. It is home to the NHL’s Minnesota Wilds and the NLL’s Minnesota Swarm. It is owned by the city of Saint Paul and operated by Minnesota Sports & Entertainment. The arena has four spectator levels: one suite level, and three general seating levels named the 100 level, the club level, and the 200 level. Its official capacity is 18,064.

The Xcel Energy Center opened in Fall 2000. It was built on the site of the demolished St. Paul Civic Center. In 2004, the arena was named by ESPN as the best overall sports venue in the U.S.

On July 8, 2003, the Xcel Energy Center was the site for the opening of the American Idol, Season II Summer Tour.

There had been a buzz in the Twin Cities for more than a week. The entire cast of the Season II tour had been in the area, practicing for the opening of the tour. They spent some time rehearsing at the University in Minneapolis and finally had their dress rehearsal in the arena.

The 2003 American Idol Tour traveled throughout the United States and gave 41 shows. The concert tour ended on August 31st in Anaheim California.

No one knew what to expect at the Xcel. The show and its performers were kept under wraps and so the performances were highly anticipated.

In the first half of the show, each Idol performed a solo song in the order they had been eliminated from the show. Clay Aiken performed in the number 9 position. Before his performance, they showed a short video montage of Clay as he progressed through the American Idol show. Finally, Clay appeared on the stage from below in a cloud of fog and sang “This is the Night.” Dressed in a dark suit, white shirt and purple tie, Clay looked handsome and ready to thrill the audience.

The second half of the concert was much more informal and there was a combination of solos and ensembles. Clay was very busy as he sang in many of the songs.

One of the highlights of the show was Clay’s duet with Ruben to “The Girl Is Mine.” They had a lot of fun teasing each other and sang well together.

To the majority of the people in the audience, the most exciting moment of the concert was when the lights dimmed and Clay arose from under the stage, dressed with a sports jersey from the local team. It was the first time that the audience saw and heard Clay’s popular hit, “Invisible” and they saw a performer who dominated the show with an exciting and dynamic performance. And, the Xcel was the home of the first “tug.”

The program at the Xcel ended with the entire ensemble singing “God Bless the USA.” It was a wonderful way to end an exciting program.

The Season II American Idol Tour went on to be a huge success. Sponsored by PopTarts, the tour had an average attendance of 10, 446 and the capacity for the tour was over 89%.

Clay Aiken fans will always remember the Xcel Arena and the wonderful excitement of the evening. It was just the beginning of a wonderful professional life for Clay.

Clay Aiken – Hot Dog!

By musicfan123 · Comments 10507(8)http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F2011%2F06%2F18%2Fclay-aiken-hot-dog%2FClay+Aiken+-+Hot+Dog%212011-06-18+07%3A07%3A37musicfan123http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F%3Fp%3D10507
Saturday, June 18th, 2011

In the last eight years, Clay Aiken has been interviewed hundreds of times. He has been interviewed for magazines, been questioned by radio DJ’s and chatted with television hosts at all times of the day.

One of the most unique interviews that Clay participated in was the day he was questioned by a “Hot Dog.” It was October 17, 2003 and it was really Meredith Vieira who hosted The View and for some reason, was dressed as a Hot Dog.

Clay was on the promotional tour for Measure of A Man and he was hitting all the major talk shows on TV. He stopped by The View after performing on The Early Show at CBS.

Before a performance of Invisible, Clay talked with a couple of the ladies on the show. Meredith led an interesting interview. Clay looked relaxed until Meredith read a letter from a fan who wanted to know how Clay smelled. WHAT?? Yes, that’s what she wanted to know.

So, as Clay looked uncomfortable, Meredith obliged the fan and smelled Clay! Then, to make Clay feel even more embarrassed, a professional perfumer was called down to give a sniff too. Both reported that Clay smelled fresh and had a hint of a perfume smell which was good.

Why do TV panelists feel the need to do such silly things? I wonder how they would feel if it happened to them.

Fortunately, the rest of the interview was interesting and Clay chatted with the hosts and showed that he was relaxed and professional in his interview.

The stage setting for the performance was lovely and Clay sounded wonderful when he sang Invisible. All and all, it was a fun show and Clay probably still remembers that visit.

The following is a great video of the interview and performance. It is always fun to see Clay at the beginning of his successful career.

Clay Aiken – Las Vegas Show

“The 2011 Billboard Music Awards” show aired live Sunday, May 22nd on the ABC Television Network. The awards show took place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Billboard partnered with Chevrolet and the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority to produce the show. This was the first year that ABC broadcast the event and marks the first Billboard Music Awards show since 2007.

The BMAs have been held annually since 1990, and like the AMAs, this awards show honors winners based on popularity—in this case, based on Billboard’s year-end music charts, with awards for top selling album/artist/single in a particular genre.

Eminem and Justin Bieber dominated this year’s Billboard Music Awards. They tied for the most awards garnered, taking home 6 each.

Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Usher, Taylor Swift, Mumford & Sons and Taio Cruz each earned 3 Billboard Music Awards. Katy Perry, Shakira, Chris Tomlin and Train were each allocated 2 Billboard Music Awards. Bruno Mars, Lady Antebellum, Black Eyed Peas, Enrique Iglesias, Ludacris, Nelly, Neon Trees, Skillet, U2, Will.I.Am and Edward Maya & Vika Jigulina each received 1 Billboard Music Award.

I do have to admit.  I did not watch the show.  Although I am a musician and a huge fan of many musical styles, the Billboard Awards Show is not on my list of favorite TV shows.  However, the show is important to the professionals who are a part of the music industry.

I would rather look back to the 2003 Billboard Awards. The show was held on December 10th and was hosted by Ryan Seacrest. Clay Aiken helped deliver the introduction that launched the show.  He performed Invisible and accepted the Award for the Top Selling Single of 2003.  I watched the show that year although I was not a fan of the crude jokes and remarks that peppered the show.

Do you watch the Billboard Awards?  Did you watch it in 2003?

Clay Aiken was a huge success as he made the first stop of his new tour, Tried & True.  The crowd in Miami seemed excited and showed their appreciation of the beautiful music, the “at home” feeling of the artists and the well-put together list of songs.

Today’s blog will not be so well organized.  As new information is still coming in about the concert, I am just putting together some comments and pictures from fans that attended the concert.  I will add more when they are available.

From the meet & greet:  Clay said he was trying to eat healthy.  He is only drinking water and milk.  He has given up soda and juice and will not even have any  on the bus!!

Concert thoughts:

  • Love the rim-shot from Felix when Clay was bragging about taking time to work on his hair!
  • Jazzy keyboards from Ben Cohn…surprising and genius!
  • Invisible done jazzy and the “clutch” still a part of the song!
  • Quiana singing Cry Me A River.  What a talent!
  • Starting the concert with Love Story…it seemed like Clay was singing it to each member of the audience.
  • Clay was:  Happy, sexy, silly, romantic, sentimental
  • Clay had us alternating from laughing and hooting to swooning and sighing

Sunday, January 9th, 2011

The name Clay Aiken comes up in many conversations daily among many people.  On Saturday, a conversation that I was involved with was about Clay and his wonderful appearances on the popular daytime television show, The View.

The conversation made me think of the many times Clay has visited The View.  From what I can remember, he has appeared on the show nine different times.  Each one was fun, different and entertaining.  I hope I found them all.

7-30-03

Clay and Ruben both talked with the ladies and sang the new singles.

10-17-03

Besides singing Invisible, Clay was interviewed by a “Hot Dog” and smelled by an expert!

03-04-04

The sang The Way and even though he was not feeling well, his performance was great.

12-09-04

Sitting in the middle of a special Christmas set, Clay performed Mary Did You Know.

09-22-06

Looking dashing in his gray suit and long  hair, Clay sang Without You

01-22-08

No song for this appearance, but Clay tried to teach the Russian Dance from Spamalot to he ladies.

05-08-08

On My Way Here was a hit when Clay performed it on this appearance.

06-02-10

To me, the best performance of then all, Clay sang Unchained Melody

07-13-10

Clay was a co-host on the View.  It was cute that he actually got “bleeped” and there was a great conversation on Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell!

I am posting a YouTube of Clay’s performance of Unchained Melody. Be sure and double click on the video and leave a comment under the video on YouTube.

Clay Aiken – A Class Act Amid the Crass

By musicfan123 · Comments 10119(7)http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F2010%2F12%2F10%2Fclay-aiken-a-class-act-amid-the-crass%2FClay+Aiken+-+A+Class+Act+Amid+the+Crass2010-12-10+08%3A05%3A19musicfan123http%3A%2F%2Fwww.claynewsnetwork.com%2F%3Fp%3D10119
Friday, December 10th, 2010

On 12/10/03 Clay Aiken appeared on the 2003 Billboard Awards Show. For an artist who was new the professional music scene, Clay played a prominent role in the evening gala. Ryan Seacrest was the host of the evening and he had Clay help with the opening of the show.

The Billboard Music Awards are held annually and are always in December.  Much like the American Music Awards, the winners are chosen on popularity.  The awards are given out based on the Billboard year-end music charts.  Some of the categories are top selling album, top selling artist and top selling single.

Clay was introduced by the irritating Kathy Griffin and performed Invisible to an enthusiastic audience.  After the performance, Clay was presented with the award for the best selling single of the year.

Clay was accompanied to the BMA Award show by his mother, Faye.  They both looked wonderful as they walked down the Red Carpet in Las Vegas and Clay was stopped many times by the press.

It was wonderful to see Clay win the Billboard Award and his performance was amazing.  However, there were some “interesting” things that went on that night.  Pathetic Kathy Griffin thought she was funny in her introduction of Clay, but most of Clay’s fans didn’t find it amusing.  Add to the list of negatives was the vulgar jokes by Dave Grohl and Triumph the Wonder Dog.  They really were “Crass” as they joked about Clay.

The following video shows Clay’s introduction, his performance of Invisible and his acceptance speech…no Dogs allowed!!

Please don’t forget to add your Christmas song choices. We need your input!!

Clay Aiken – Impacting Someone’s Life!

By musicfan123 · Comments 10040(10)http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F2010%2F10%2F02%2Fclay-aiken-impacting-someones-life%2FClay+Aiken+-+Impacting+Someone%27s+Life%212010-10-02+07%3A17%3A01musicfan123http%3A%2F%2Fwww.claynewsnetwork.com%2F%3Fp%3D10040
Saturday, October 2nd, 2010

At the end of 2007, a book titled Chicken Soup for the American Idol Soul was released.  As I was looking around on the internet today, I found the story that Clay Aiken related in the popular book.  I had never read it before so I thought there might be others who had not read it either.  Please enjoy!  This book is still available so why not stop by Amazon and pick up a copy.  If the other stories are as good as Clay’s story, I am sure it would be a good read.

“As I’m signing autographs, a very petite, pretty girl walks up to me and says, “Your ‘Invisible’ video made such an impact on my life.” I didn’t want to argue with her, but I thought she must have gotten that confused with some other video I’d done. “

“I thought it couldn’t have been ‘Invisible.’ That was just a self-congratulatory video of me singing on the stage in the middle of Hollywood Boulevard with a bunch of people cheering. There was no story line; there was nothing inspirational about it. How in the world could that video have impacted anybody?” “Are you sure you don’t mean some other video?” I asked.

“”No, I’m sure it was ‘Invisible,” she said. I asked her to please explain, and she did. “Well, Clay, I used to weigh about 200 pounds.” She paused. “You look great, but what does that have to do with ‘Invisible’?” “When I saw the girl on the stage with you in that video and you put your arm around her, it made me feel so much better about myself, because you had an overweight girl in your video, and you accepted her. “

“Because of that, I was finally able to accept myself. After that, my whole life changed, and I lost 90 pounds.” Then it dawned on me what she was referring to. While we were making the video, the music director had pulled someone out of the audience and put her on the stage with me. She wasn’t hugely overweight; she was just a healthy-looking girl, but I guess she didn’t exactly fit the image of what people usually see on music videos. “

“She wasn’t stick-thin or model-gorgeous, but I never thought anything of it. ” “Thank you so much for sharing that with me,” I said, but a simple thank you was hardly adequate for the gift that young lady had given me. Her words led me to the realization that you never know the one thing you do that is going to impact someone’s life. I try to set the right example, but that day I realized that even things I would never think would make an impact do. “

“I never would have thought that video would have affected anybody in any kind of positive way, and lo and behold, it did. The person it affected most was me. I realized that from then on, I was going to have normal, average, everyday-looking people in all my videos. I literally had to fight with the people from my record label. They were not going to let me do it. “

“They said that the video wouldn’t sell, but I wouldn’t budge. When we made the video I told them I didn’t want any anorexic-looking girls or model-perfect guys. If we did have beautiful people, I wanted the beautiful girl to be with the overweight guy, and the average-looking girl with the model guy. I wanted people to know it doesn’t matter what you look like, that everyone is good enough. “

“I realized that’s why “Idol” has the impact it does. You never see a contestant with that music-video look. It’s about real people, and I think the reason why Season Two was so exciting is because not only were Ruben, Kimberly, and I all from out in the middle of nowhere, Podunk, but we were all extremely normal, average-looking people. We would have never gotten record contracts if it weren’t for that show: Ruben being such a big guy; Kimberly, who was gorgeous, but a plus-size woman; and me. I was a dork, and I still am a dork. “

“We’re all just normal people from down the street and around the block. The final realization I had that day in Atlanta is that it’s not just people who are in the public eye who have an impact on others. You don’t have to make a music video to make a difference in someone’s life. You can be a bagger at a grocery store or a teller at a bank. You never know when something you do is going to impact someone’s life without you even knowing it. “

Quote of the Day

It is not always about performance art, but about receiving positive energy from people with positive spirits. Sometimes we can see someone's spirit, and those are the people with great energy. Those are the people that get me through the day, especially on Broadway. -Clay Aiken
