Clay Aiken – Batter Up!

The St. Louis Cardinals beat the Texas Rangers at Game 1 of the World Series Wednesday night in St. Louis.   For those who follow baseball the game was exciting and a close scoring game.

For those who follow musicians, there is usually a great interest in the singer that is chosen to sing the National Anthem before the game.  This year Scotty McCreery, the 2011 American Idol was chosen for this honor.  The young country singer had a scare as he began the Anthem…his mic was not working.  Fortunately, he was able to start over and sang a country rendition of the Star Spangled Banner.

Scotty is the second American Idol to sing the National Anthem at Game 1 of a World Series.  In 2003, Clay Aiken performed the anthem.  For Clay, the 2003 World Series must hold a special place in his memory.  The New York Yankees were hosting the Florida Marlins at Yankee Stadium. Clay sang a great rendition of the difficult anthem, even when being interrupted by the low flying Stealth Bombers. I wonder if Clay still has his World Series Jacket from that night.

The following are a few interesting facts about The World Series.

  • The first World Series of baseball took place in 1903 between the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Boston Americans.
  • Don Larsen of the New York Yankees pitched the first and only perfect game in World Series history in 1956.
  • The first World Series shown on TV was the 1947 World Series between the Yankees and the Dodgers.
  • The 1989 World Series between the San Francisco Giants and the Oakland A’s was postponed for 10 days after a massive earthquake rocked Northern California.
  • The 1994 World Series was cancelled after baseball players went on strike in August of 1994.

I have always thought it was a huge honor to be invited to sing at the opening game of a World Series. It made me wonder who has done this in the years since Clay sang in 2003.

  • 2004 Steven Tyler – the lead singer of Aerosmith
  • 2005 Josh Grobin
  • 2006 Bob Seeger – refused to sing the Star Spangled Banner because he said it was too hard to sing. He chose to sing America the Beautiful.
  • 2007 John Williams and the Boston Pops Orchestra
  • 2008 Backstreet Boys
  • 2009 Keni Thomas (a U.S. Army Ranger)
  • 2010 John Legend
In 2010, Kelly Clarkson sang the National Anthem at Game 3 in her home state of Texas.

Did you watch Clay sing the Star Spangled Banner that night? Did you hold your breath the entire time like I did? What an exciting time for Clay, his family, friends and fans!!

Why not watch the performance again. This time you can breathe!!

Clay Aiken – Catching Up

By musicfan123 · Comments 12504(11)http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F2011%2F10%2F12%2Fclay-aiken-catching-up%2FClay+Aiken+-+Catching+Up2011-10-12+07%3A27%3A50musicfan123http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F%3Fp%3D12504

I received a couple of e-mails from readers yesterday.  They did not recognize some of the pictures that I posted on Sunday.  They requested more about the pictures..Well, OK

This picture was taken at a National Inclusion Project Gala.  Yes, Clay has a bust of himself in his hands.  He was not hiding it, but it was being auctioned off as part of the fund-raiser for the night.  The bust was first seen on Jimmy Kimmel.  It was a gift to Clay from his friend Jimmy after it was used in the opening for the show.

Photoshopped at its worse…Again, this is a picture that was originally from a skit on the Jimmy Kimmel Show.  Do you remember when Clay visited Kimmel and talked about Dancing With The Stars..It was only promo for Jimmy, but Clay played along.  He wore fake facial hair that actually started to come off in the skit.  It was a cute skit so it was picked up by most of the entertainment shows.  The Insider showed this photoshopped picture as they talked about the skit.  At least that is how I remember it!!

Congratulations to Scotty McCreery.  His new album reached the #1 position on the Billboard Top 100 List for last week.  The album, titled Clear As Day sold 198,500 copies.  According to the entertainment site, Scotty is the first WINNER since Ruben that had their debut album reach the #1 position.

This made me wonder about the successful Idol alums and how their first week numbers were for their albums.  This is what I found:

1. CLAY AIKEN, Measure of a Man: 612,859 (#1)
*Season 2: 2nd place
2. RUBEN STUDDARD, Soulful: 416,589 (#1)
*Season 2: Winner
3. CARRIE UNDERWOOD, Some Hearts: 314,549 (#2)
*Season 4: Winner
4. CHRIS DAUGHTRY, Daughtry: 303,677 (#2)
*Season 5: 4th place
5. TAYLOR HICKS, Taylor Hicks: 298,199 (#2)
*Season 5: Winner
6. KELLY CLARKSON, Thankful: 297,381 (#1)
*Season 1: Winner
7. DAVID COOK, David Cook: 279,578 (#3)
*Season 7: Winner
8. FANTASIA BARRINO, Free Yourself: 240,278 (#8)
*Season 3: Winner
9. BO BICE, The Real Thing: 226,976 (#4)
*Season 5: 2nd place
10. JENNIFER HUDSON, Jennifer Hudson: 217,185 (#2)
*Season 3: 7th place

I watched Dancing With The Stars last night.  I really don’t want to say much except…Clay Aiken is so wonderfully talented.  How wonderful that he found the talented Ben Cohn to write such beautiful arrangements.

Take a minute and watch this beautiful video by SueReu.  I know I have posted it before, but it really shows off the talent of Clay, Ben and Jennifer Grey and her partners.  You will just have to smile!!

Clay Aiken – Guilty Pleasure!

By musicfan123 · Comments 12086(15)http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F2011%2F09%2F18%2Fclay-aiken-guilty-pleasure%2FClay+Aiken+-+Guilty+Pleasure%212011-09-18+07%3A04%3A24musicfan123http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F%3Fp%3D12086
Sunday, September 18th, 2011

In September of 2003,  pictures of Clay Aiken were everywhere.  It seemed the press couldn’t get enough of his smiling face.  He was the new pop sensation in the United States and it seemed that everyone wanted all the news about the talented young man.

The September 3rd issue of Entertainment Weekly featured Clay on the cover of their magazine.  Inside, there were lots of pictures and an interview that was conducted while Clay was still on the American Idol Tour.    They labeled Clay a “guilty pleasure.”

Do you remember this article?  Did you buy the magazine?   AND, (gulp) do you still have the magazine?  (I do!!)

And The Geek Shall Inherit The Earth
Part Howdy Doody, part Davy Jones, 100% stud, America’s favorite redhead (sorry, Lucy!) dishes on Ruben, stardom, and that hair. Our heart’s Aiken for Clay!

By Dave Karger Dave Karger

Dave Karger, a senior writer at EW, also reports on box office and other movie- related matters on NBC’s ”Today”  Clay Aiken’s career is in the toilet.

”It smells like urine in here!” says the American Idol runner-up as he strides into the cavernous bathroom — complete with two stalls and a group shower — that’s serving as a makeshift office backstage at the Wachovia Arena in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. ”I bet you’ve never done an interview in one of these before!”

Yep, it’s a first on this end, but Aiken had better get used to the surroundings: Just hours before he’s to take the stage as part of this summer’s American Idols Live! concert tour, the potty is pretty much the only place he’s safe. Around the corner lurks a throng of ”Claymates,” as the most obsessed Aiken freaks call themselves — including beaming moms, screaming daughters, and one 27-year-old therapist who had ”Clay” permanently tattooed on the small of her back earlier in the day. When the arena lights go down, the 24-year-old special-ed teacher from Raleigh, N.C., is the performer who elicits the most earsplitting shrieks from the suburban crowd. As one oaktag sign in the cheap seats proclaims, ”Elvis, the Beatles, and now Clay.”

The correct progression might be more like ”The Monkees, O-Town, and now Clay,” but we get the picture. At some point since the cheesy early Guarini-esque ballads, the ubiquitous Ford Focus commercials, and the sad-sack lone dance move (you know the one, the shoulder pump crossed with the knee bend), Aiken has become one of the most natural, confident, and addictive voices in contemporary pop music. And thanks to his Queer Eye-popping physical makeover and his show-stopping vocal range, he’s emerged as the biggest star from Idol’s second season. Earlier this summer, his debut release, ”This Is the Night”/”Bridge Over Troubled Water,” shot straight to No. 1 on the Billboard charts, trounced the offering from American Idol winner Ruben Studdard by 200,000 copies, and became the fastest-selling single since Elton John’s ”Candle in the Wind 1997.” ”I was going to be a teacher or a principal,” Aiken says of his pre-Idol plans. ”Thank Jesus I came back for the wild-card show!”

We’ll give up a hallelujah as well. With the Backstreet Boys MIA and Justin Timberlake essentially an R&B artist, the world needs a new prince of pop. ”There’s a lot of singers that have incredible instruments,” says Steve Ferrera, RCA Records’ senior vice president of A&R, who, along with mogul Clive Davis and Idol creator Simon Fuller, is helping to oversee Aiken’s musical output. ”Clay is one of those rare singers who has the chops, but he’s also able to make the connection to the lyric. So when some people might be just doing vocal histrionics, he’s imbuing the lyric with passion and feeling.”

Although cuddly crooner Studdard won the right to release his CD first, the pair’s labels, RCA and J Records, have now pulled a Rehnquist and reversed America’s decision, opting to debut Aiken’s album on Oct. 14, a month before Studdard’s. ”It was with Ruben’s blessing,” insists a rep for both singers, adding that Studdard isn’t finished recording yet. ”He didn’t want to hold up Clay’s record.” That’s the noncynical take. Here’s another: Idol execs recognized they were wrong to throw so much weight behind Studdard during the competition. (Some speculated they did so because they were afraid to be put in the position of having to back Aiken, who was rumored to be gay. The singer has said he is straight.) Publicly, Idol judge Simon Cowell says marketing Aiken is a no-brainer. ”He is the clean-cut American boy, and he has the advantage of being able to appeal to 3-year-olds and 80-year-olds with pretty much pure pop music.” Aiken’s life story, which resonates with so many, is also a draw. ”If I was naming Clay’s album, I’d call it The American Dream, because he encapsulates all of that,” Cowell says. ”He is the American dream, which is the geeky little kid who went on to win over the hearts of America through a singing competition.” (Start lobbying, Simon: Aiken has yet to decide on an album title.) The goal for today’s hottest preteen pinup is to win over postpubescents who wouldn’t know how to text-message Ryan Seacrest if their lives depended on it. ”We’ve definitely tried to take it a little edgier than what he sang on the show,” says Ferrera, who connected Aiken with a posse of young, unknown songwriters. But don’t expect him to stray far from his comfort zone. ”There are no up-tempos on this album,” Ferrera says. ”But there are definitely some midtempo ballads.”

One of those, ”This Is the Night,” wasn’t exactly music to the Idol judges’ ears — when Aiken first performed the song, Cowell dismissed it as ”American Idol: The Musical.” ”I think they probably thought it sounded a little cheesy,” Aiken says now. ”Not as cheesy, I might say, as [Kelly Clarkson's] ‘A Moment Like This.’ I don’t care what they say — I like the song.” His fans did too: ”I don’t think they went out and bought one,” says Aiken, offering an explanation for his record-breaking sales. ”I think they went out and bought 15. I don’t know what they did with them — used them as coasters, Frisbees, something.”

Cowell, of course, has a different theory. ”If Ruben had had ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water’ on his record, he’d have had the No. 1,” says the judge, who often saved his highest praise on the show for Studdard. ”I think that was the hit song. If you asked 100 record buyers who bought Clay’s single ‘What song did you want to buy?’ I wouldn’t be surprised if 70 percent at least said ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water.’ People will disagree, but that’s my opinion.” (We’ll never know; RCA doesn’t track those statistics.)

Whatever the case, Aiken would like to put the Clay versus Ruben showdown to rest. ”The whole country wants Ruben and me to be at each other’s throats,” he says, tugging at the bottom of his orange shirt. ”We spent nine months competing with each other. And we both got what we wanted. He’s got a title, and I’m nothing but proud of him. We don’t look at who’s No. 1 and No. 2. Because it’s not worth it to us.” (Studdard puts it more succinctly: ”Clay is my dawg.”) Even after the disaster that was From Justin to Kelly, which made just $4.9 million at the box office this summer, Aiken still hopes to make a movie with his supposed nemesis. ”That was a premise that’s not necessarily original,” he says of the first Idol-inspired film. ”With Ruben and me you’ve got a completely different thing. Look at us! We could just stand there and people would laugh.”

At least they’re no longer laughing at Aiken’s looks. The budding star, whose formerly reddish brown eyebrows will completely disappear if they’re lightened one more time, says he’s totally receptive to all the fashion help. ”We were doing the video shoot for ‘This Is the Night,’ and the people from the record label were putting me in all these different outfits,” he remembers. ”I just stood there and was like, ‘That’s fine, that’s fine’ — all indifferent to the situation. They finally called my management rep and said, ‘Is he okay with these?’ If I knew enough about this industry, or enough about fashion, to know what was cool to wear, then I wouldn’t have needed American Idol to get into it. So I’ll be willing to do whatever you want me to do, but I’m going to say no if I’m really against it. There’s not really much middle ground. I’ll do it, or I’ll say, ‘That’s ridiculous.’ I pick my battles.”

For instance? ”There was a particular person who did my hair on the show,” he says. ”For a period [afterward] they said, ‘Let’s use some other people.’ And I looked like a greased pig. It was horrible. So I finally picked a battle there and said, ‘Listen, we’re getting him from now on.”’ Aiken also gladly recorded cover versions of Neil Sedaka’s ”Solitaire” and Carole Bayer Sager’s ”When I Need You” but scoffed at Rick Astley’s ”Never Gonna Give You Up.” ”I said that’s just a little corny, because there are already enough comparisons that can be drawn.” (Whaddya know? We’ve drawn them too; see sidebar.)

Still, we doubt Astley would have influenced the scores of fans who flooded the FCC with letters demanding a recount of the neck-and-neck Idol vote. ”I guess on one hand it’s flattering because people really wanted me to win,” Aiken says of the grassroots campaign. ”But it’s over. And I’m perfectly fine. I think people feel like I feel slighted. ‘Oh, poor Clay, we want to fight for him.’ You don’t need to fight for me. I’m perfectly happy. I would be much happier if these people would put their time and energy into the Autism Society. Leave the FCC alone, leave Ruben alone, leave me alone.”

Given today’s fickle pop-music world, Aiken knows that wish could soon come true. Maybe his album will be the beginning of a long musical legacy (we can dream, can’t we?). Or perhaps today’s Idol will indeed be tomorrow’s aspiring high school principal. ”How many eggs do I put into this basket?” says Aiken, his voice still echoing through the bathroom. ”In two years, am I going to be [first Survivor winner] Richard Hatch? Is this going to be my life and my career, or is this going to be a great summer-camp memory for me? I don’t know. That’s what makes it scary.” Frightening enough to make someone head straight for the john.

Clay Aiken – First Place With Fans

Summer – 2011 – The time I organized my computer.

It’s actually rather fun.  I have found some of the greatest  things that have been hidden, labeled “Unknown.”  Of course I would be done by now if I didn’t stop all the time to watch videos and read every word…but I am having fun!!

This past week I found the following review of Clay Aiken’s  Jukebox Tour.  I was lucky enough to see the tour twice in 2005 and it is one of my favorite concerts.  I hope you enjoy the review as much as I do.

Audience is clay in Aiken’s hands

Singer won second place on ‘Idol,’ but first place with fans

COMMENTARY
By Andy Dehnart

Updated: 6:23 p.m. ET Aug. 9, 2005
Less than a week after kicking off his 25-city “Jukebox Tour,” Clay Aiken performed in Greenville, South Carolina. After performing an energetic review of hits from the ‘50s, ‘60s, ‘70s, ‘80s, and ‘90s, he concluded with a few original songs, including “When You Say You Love Me,” which was on his first album, “Measure of a Man.”

As he began to sing, he stumbled, arriving at the wrong words at the wrong time. The music kept playing but Clay turned to the singers on stage with him and said, “That’s the third night in a row!” He laughed. “I don’t know the words to this song!” Then Clay pretended to sulk off stage, letting one of his back-up singers take over, but he quickly came back to give it another try.

Then, in the front of the Peace Center’s auditorium, near stage left, a fan held up a sign. But she wasn’t proclaiming her love for Clay; instead, she was offering assistance. “Are those the cue cards for that song?” he asked, walking over toward her. In her hands were, in fact, homemade cue cards with the lyrics to “When You Say You Love Me.” Having known of his tendency on this barely week-old tour to have trouble with the song, someone had constructed cue cards to help him out and passed them to the front of the auditorium. His fans knew he was going to mess up before he did.

“Although I feel completely, miserably embarrassed, I’m going to try to continue, if that’s okay,” Clay said. Then he asked, with mock incredulity, “How do you know I’m going to do the same ones I did last night?”

That’s a good question, but there’s an easy answer: Clay Aiken may have been the runner-up on “American Idol 2,” but two years after he lost that competition, he has become the single most successful and popular reality TV show contestant ever. No other reality TV stars—and few stars of any other origin—have managed to build a fan base like that at the Peace Center last Wednesday. Other reality show participants have recognizable names (such as Omarosa, Richard Hatch), and others have gone on to successful careers (like Clay’s “Idol” predecessor Kelly Clarkson, for example), but Clay has an audience like no other.

Even though Clay lost “Idol,” he easily outsold winner Ruben Studdard in both singles and albums, and his debut record landed at number one upon its release. His fans are obsessively devoted to both Clay and his art, going online to discuss his music and his charity work (as a UNICEF ambassador, among other things).

There’s even a Clay Aiken credit card, which can be used to buy everything from a Clay Aiken bucket hat to a Clay Aiken thong.

Play that not-so-funky music, skinny white boy
Why exactly is this “skinny white boy,” as Clay described himself in Greenville, such a sensation? I went to Greenville to try to find out. What has inspired the rabid devotion that characterizes Claymates, as his fans are known? What sort of performance causes fans to attend concert after concert on the same tour?

Although a single concert just skims the surface of the phenomenon, from the moment Clay strutted out on-stage arm-in-arm with his back-up singers, the audience was, well, clay in Clay’s hands.

Before the concert began, I asked a fan sitting in front of me to explain, in a sentence, why so many people loved Clay Aiken. “We came for the music, but we stayed for the man,” she said.

This enthusiasm for both Clay and his art didn’t subside the entire evening. Throughout the two-and-a-half-hour show, the audience stood up (during the fast songs) and sat down (when Clay was telling a story or singing a slower song). Waves of energy rippled throughout the auditorium as he performed medleys of well-known hits from the past half-century, more than capably tackling covers of songs by everyone from Elvis to Prince.

As Clay moved on stage, camera flashes strobed constantly, and tiny images of the stage were visible on dozens of video cameras’ view screens. Some fans stood with cell phones open, broadcasting the concert to others around the country, who transcribed it online for the benefit of other fans. The audience cheered wildly when Clay accompanied himself on piano, because, someone quickly told me, he was just learning to play.

Everyone who’s heard him knows that Clay can sing. But on stage, Clay is also energetic, humble, and awkward. He mixes self-depreciation with a dose of pretend, over-exaggerated ego, and genuinely appears to be having a great time interacting with his audience and his band. Far more experienced performers would have been thrown off after forgetting words to a song, but it didn’t really phase Clay at all; in fact, he embraced it. His personality and persona are as much a part of his performance as his music.

During the performance, Angela Fisher and Quiana Parler sang back-up for him throughout the evening, but the phrase “back-up singer” doesn’t really apply to either one. Clay literally shared the stage with them, as they performed their own solos as he stepped aside.

His gawkiness is especially endearing. Clay may be able to sing exceptionally well, but his on-stage talent drops off rapidly after that. Primarily, he dances like a wooden puppet on a stick.

But every time he’d awkwardly attempt a dance move, or just attempt to move a body part, screams would ripple through the crowd. And he played along, giving them more of what they wanted.

Watching Clay and his audience interact was revealing, but in many ways, the concert seems to be just the public side of his popularity. Fans gather online and in person, and have two and a half years of history with Clay; I don’t know if I’ll ever fully be able to see the Clay phenomenon in exactly the same way they do. But the performance made it clear that, in this era of manufactured pop, where top-40 music is constructed for the benefit of the audience by marketers and radio station conglomerates, Clay Aiken’s fans believe they have found something real. That’s ironic since Clay Aiken, the phenomenon, was born of “American Idol,” which, with its narrow focus and snap judgments, is a televised look inside the machine that produces our entertainers.

At the same time, Clay’s fans were introduced to him and his music and saw him work his way up throughout the competition. His talent and his personality are genuine, or at least appear to be, because we’ve watched him grow along the way. Clay Aiken may be a product of the “American Idol” factory, but to some degree, what went in is what came out, and that’s just the way his fans like it.

Did you see Clay live when he performed on the Jukebox Tour?  If yes, where did you see the concert?  Would you like to see another Jukebox Tour from Clay?

On Tuesday, July 5th, the HDD list of top selling albums was published.  The list, which is published each week, is an important tool in the music field as it is the official list of top selling albums.

American Idol season seven winner David Cook’s sophomore album results were a part of the list.  This Loud Morning debuted at #7.

This made me wonder where this album and results came on the list of other Idol’s 2nd albums. I did a bit of searching and came up with this list.  As you can see, the sales numbers are rounded.  I used many sources for the numbers, including Idol Chatter, RIAA search, allmusic, and Yahoo Chart Watch.

1 Carrie Underwood Carnival Ride 10-23-07 527,000
2 Clay Aiken Merry Christmas With Love* 11-16-04 270,000
3 Chris Daughtry Leave This Town 7-14-09 269,000
4 Kelly Clarkson Breakaway 11-30-04 250,000
5 David Archuleta Christmas From The Heartland* 10-13-09 249,000
6 Jennifer Hudson I Remember Me 3-22-11 165,000
7 Fantasia Fantasia 12-12-06 133,000
8 Ruben Studdard I Need An Angel 11-23-04 96,000
9 Jordin Sparks Battlefield 7-21-09 48,000
10 David Cook This Loud Morning 6-28-11 44,090
11 Kellie Pickler Kellie Pickler 9-30-08 43,000
12 Josh Gracin We Weren’t Crazy 4-01-08 18,000

*Holiday albums are sometimes not considered “sophomore” albums, however, in this list, they are the second albums for each artist and both charted.

The names in red are Idol winners from the different seasons.

When I see a list like this, I am always amazed at the numbers for Clay Aiken.  His album, A Thousand Different Ways debuted at #2 and sold over 211,000 albums.  It’s pretty exciting to see those numbers.

Do you own any of these albums?  Have you heard any of the albums?  Is there a “second” album from an Idol that you are looking forward to hearing?

In May of 2004, Clay Aiken was busy with professional duties almost every day.  He performed on American Idol,  sang at Wango Tango, performed on many TV shows including The Tonight Show, The Early Show, Ryan Seacrests Show, and Entertainment Tonight, sang with Heather Headley for Broadway Cares and hosted Fantasia’s hometown party in Greensboro.  Clay was also featured in at least five magazines during the month.

On May 15th, Blades On Ice, a popular Figure skating magazine, published an article that featured Clay and his special day of skating for the BAF/National Inclusion Project.  The article was positive and provided Clay the opportunity to share information about the BAF.

Clay Aiken, whose first CD (Measure of a Man) recently shipped triple platinum, came in second on American Idol 2 last May but his star soared well beyond that Fox show in the muisic pop world ever since. BLADES On Ice magazine caught up with him when this auburn haired pop sensation took to the ice in his hometown of Raleigh, North Carolina to venture into the skating realm.

“Now why is everybody thinking I am going to fall out there? I’ve gone roller and ice skating as a YMCA counselor so I have skated a little before,” said Aiken with a laugh.

The 25 year old Aiken donned hockey skates December 21-22 when his foundation, the Bubel Aiken Foundation held a skating/hockey fundraiser in conjunction with the NHL’s Carolina Hurricanes Kind N’ Community Foundation at the Raleigh North Carolina’s RBC Center. These two foundations announced a formal parnership just prior to their first public joint event at a press conference.

Aiken said, “It is a thrill for me to have such support from my hometown. I am excited about our partnership and the opportunitites we will bring together to children with special needs.

“We want to break down those walls and erase the lines that divide kids with and without disablitities. I am very thankful to the Hurricanes for the opportunity to help spread the word about The Bubel Aiken Foundation.”

On Sunday afternoon, immediately following the Hurricanes “Skate with the “Canes” charity event, Aiken took to the ice with foundation volunteers, YMCA staff, family and friends along with 100 children for “Skate with Clay.” Fifty participants with a special need disability and 50 “regular kids” were selected via sign up at one of the local YMCA branches, the Banks D. Kerr Family YMCA, two weeks prior.

Most participants were local North Carolina residents but several traveled great distances from other states, including Minnesota. Children received a specially designed Bubel Aiken Hurricanes jersey that matched the one Aiken wore.

During this skating activity Aiken’s face lit up as the children approached him, particularly those who had special needs as his degree is in special education. Ever sensitive to the special needs participants, when the crowd around him would grow large, he left the rink with his bodyguard (Jerome) and popped up in a new area.

“We have children both with and without disabilities who will do this activity together. It’s not about one group of kids or one group of adults. It’s about everybody doing things together and being included and breaking down the barriers,” said Aiken.

Wachovia Bank sponsored underwrote all their expenses for this charity event according to the bank’s marketing director, John Ward. Aiken first formally announced on July 28, 2003 the birth of his BAF foundation at a Wachovia Bank appearance in NYC.

Aiken also performed on skates to a sold-out crowd between periods during the December 22 hockey game of the Carolina Hurricanes against Dallas Stars and his foundation benefited from ticket sales.

“I am very excited to be here today,” said Aiken. “Each person has a purpose and I feel like this is one of the reasons I’ve been so fortunate to do this.”

For this game 200 seats were sold in two boxes that had been donated by the Hurricanes. Aiken then visited the donor boxes briefly during the second period of the hockey game. according to Emma Bennett, Community Relations Manager of the Hurricanes, “A large percentage of any ticket sold, after we first began planning this a month prior, were also donated to the Bubel Aiken Foundation by the Hurricanes.

Following the hockey game, Aiken briefly met Olympic Champion, Kristi Yamaguchi by the elevators reserved for his use during this hockey game appearance. Yamaguchi who owns his CD and also resides in Raleigh said, “He seems like a very nice guy. I hear his music all time on Raleigh radio. He has an amazing voice and is very talented.”

He first sang the Star Spangled Banner wearing skates just inside the rink barriers prior to the game’s start but after the first period he came out singing I Will Carry You from his hit CD and continued skating throughout this number. According to the arena staff, an NHL rule affects the length of time an individual other than the players can be on the ice, so for the second period where he sang three additional songs, he sang from a huge lift by the Zamboni entrance.

Ever the perfectionist, Aiken practiced beforehand at the Rockefeller Center outdoor rink while in NYC. He said, “I hope I don’t fall today. I practiced at Rockefeller Center and I did pretty well. We had to outrun somebody at one point.”

Aiken announced plans to launch a national YMCA program in conjunction with the Bubel Aiken Foundation that will be tested first in North Carolina for inclusion of special needs children in YMCA programs. “We wanted to do this locally (first) with local YMCA’s and eventually want to take it nationally,” said Aiken.

Aiken draws from his own experiences with YMCA programs and that motivated him to have the two organizations work together.

“From my own experience at the ‘Y’ I saw kids being turned away from programs because their staff was not trained or didn’t have the correct ratio to work with kids with special needs in the same environment, and that is where our motivation comes from,” said Aiken.

The mission statement of The Bubel Aiken Foundation is to provide services and financial assistance to facilitate fully the integration of children with disabilities into the life environment of those without.

Aiken previously toured as part of the American Idol 2 ensemble early last summer and his popularity continues to swell at a rapid pace. He graced the covers of Rolling Stone, Entertainment Weekly and had major features in Time Magazine, People Magazine, and just about every teen magazine imaginable. He appeared on Saturday Night Live and nearly all the major talk shows.

Aiken got his feet wet with several radio station concert appearances in December around the country for three of four songs before joining forces with American Idol from the first season, Kelly Clarkson for their joint Independent tour. This duo toured 30 cities, beginning on February 22 in Charlotte, N.C. and concluding in St. Paul, Minn, on April 16.

During this tour they both met up with the Hughes family following the Long Island concert on March 4. “Clay and Kelly were arguing over whom was the bigger figure skating fan when they met Sarah backstage just after the concert. They both were fantastic in concert and it was so much fun to meet them,” said her sister Emily Hughes.

Aiken has publicly mentioned the possibility of a second tour leg that could include appearances in Canada but dates are not yet set according to his publicist.

Aiken announced in late March that he plans to return to the studio to work on a new Christmas album when his tour concludes. According to Aiken the goal is to release it in 2004. Aiken’s American Idol top 12 outfit from American Idol 2 “Motown Night’ is currently on display at the N.C. Museum of History through Sept. 6 in Raleigh.

Several sources suggest that Aiken will return to a skating venue in 2004, but this time the plan is to include performances by elite skating champions. (Look for further details on the BLADES On Ice website when arrangements are more finalized.)

Aiken earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in special education on Dec. 20 in Charlotte, N.C. from the University of North Carolina Charlotte. After completing an independent study program where he researched how to set up a foundation, he went the extra mile and actually set up this BAF foundation. One of its goals is to give out grants to help facilitate inclusion programs for special needs children.

Aiken did not fall on the ice and succeeded in making “Skate with Clay” special for the children that participated. Aiken recently told the Associated Press, “A lot of people overlook the work that the foundation is trying to do. That’s the benefit of me being in this position, is the opportunity to bring attention to a cause that’s personal to me that doesn’t really have a voice.

Clay Aiken – One Night Only!!

By musicfan123 · Comments 10288(13)http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F2011%2F04%2F25%2Fclay-aiken-one-night-only-3%2FClay+Aiken+-+One+Night+Only%21%212011-04-25+07%3A10%3A02musicfan123http%3A%2F%2Fwww.claynewsnetwork.com%2F%3Fp%3D10288
Monday, April 25th, 2011

Clay Aiken toured throughout the United States on the Independent Tour in 2004.  Clay and Kelly Clarkson were co-headliners for the 30 shows.  The tour started and Charlotte, NC, wound its way to California and ended in St. Paul, MN.

The 4th stop on the tour was at the American Airlines Arena in Miami, Florida.  Both Clay and Kelly performed with enthusiasm and the audience was excited and supportive of the two musicians.

BUT….the big question from this night was…….why did Clay wear the great outfit only once?  Why did he decide to abandon the great combination of blue shirt and jeans?  So many fans have said the look was their favorite look for the tour.  Did you like this look?  Why do you think Clay decided to toss this outfit aside?

Quote of the Day

It is not always about performance art, but about receiving positive energy from people with positive spirits. Sometimes we can see someone's spirit, and those are the people with great energy. Those are the people that get me through the day, especially on Broadway. -Clay Aiken
