Clay Aiken – So Much Besides Taxes!

By musicfan123 · Comments 15691(11)http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F2012%2F04%2F15%2Fclay-aiken-so-much-besides-taxes%2FClay+Aiken+-+So+Much+Besides+Taxes%212012-04-15+07%3A53%3A34musicfan123http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F%3Fp%3D15691
Sunday, April 15th, 2012

It is April 15th – Most of us look at this date and think taxes! But…this year taxes are due on Tuesday, April 17.  The extra break was granted because April 15 is a Sunday this year, and Monday is Emancipation Day, a holiday in Washington D.C. that celebrates the freeing of slaves in the district.

BUT…instead of taxes, I would rather think about some of the fun things that Clay Aiken did on April 15th.

April 15, 2003 -  American Idol presented the Top 7 performers on Billy Joel Night.  Each singer was required to sing a song made famous by Billy Joel.

Clay Aiken was the last performer on this night and the judges remarks from this performance have been quoted many times.  Most Clay fans will remember “I just can’t wait till you let loose and dance a little more!”  Then Clay’s answer… baby-steps!!

Then, who could forget Simon’s   “I prefer you when I shut my eyes.”

Tell Her About It was a wonderful choice for Clay to make.  Starting out as a ballad and then, WOW, he changed it to up-tempo.  It was the night that Clay changed his whole style and delivery.  He never missed a step.  When was the last time you watch Clay sing this on American Idol?  Enjoy!!

April 15, 2004 – Clay was in Kansas City, MO.  Clay and Diane Bubel were at part of Hallmark’s Kaleidoscope.  Clay and Diane participated in a private art session.  The program integrated children with special needs with their typical peers.  They paired up to produce art projects that were based on the theme,  How Art Defines Me.  From the pictures, it looks like Clay had as much fun as the kids!

April 15, 2004 – After a day of working with the kids on their art projects, Clay performed at the Kember Arena as part of the Independent Tour.  This performance was special because it was almost the end of the successful tour for Clay and Kelly Clarkson.  This performance produced some fun pictures.

April 15, 2005 – This was National Youth Service Day.  Clay was in Hollywood, Florida and he joined a group of Best Buddies  kids to plant trees in the area.

National Youth Service Day is a public awareness and education campaign that highlights the amazing contributions that young people make to their communities 365 days a year. As the largest service event in the world, it mobilizes millions of young people to address the needs of their communities, and educates the public, the media, and policymakers about the year-round contributions of young people as community leaders.

April 15, 2012 –  Clay Aiken will be seen on NBC as a contestant on the popular show, Celebrity Apprentice.  The show tonight is episode 9 and is titled Puppets Up.  The show should be filled with lots of fun, laughs, tears, and drama.  This show is NEVER boring!

Don’t forget to check in on Monday.  The reviews, articles and pictures of Celebrity Apprentice will be posted throughout the day as they become available.

Clay Aiken – An Amazing Night

MOAM

MOAM

Sometimes the best things that happen in life are planned with each and every detail in place. However, sometimes spontaneity takes over and something even more exciting happens. From all accounts, that’s what happened on March 7, 2004 in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania.

Kelly Clarkson and Clay Aiken were two of the best selling new artists in 2003. They joined forces in early 2004 for their first major nationwide headlining tour. Called the “Independent” tour, the two RCA stars performed in 30 cities. Because they were two of America’s most talented young entertainers, they alternated as headliners on the tour.

After stops in North Carolina, Florida, Georgia, Washington D.C. and New York, the artists found their way to Pennsylvania and the beautiful area of Wilkes-Barre.

Kelly opened the show with an exciting set that showed off her range and love of singing and entertaining. Her performance of Beautiful Disaster was, according to some fans, “off the charts.” It was evident that the crowd liked Kelly, but because so many did not stand during her performance, most speculated that it was a Clay crowd.

During intermission, a real buzz started up in the Wachovia Arena. Many of the fans knew in advance about what to expect, but when Clay came in from the back singing Kyrie, the entire audience rose to their feet. According to reports from fans, Clay was energetic and having a wonderful time. Everything was going as planned and the crowd was excited.

But, as with all plans, there can be a twist. That night, the unexpected event ended up the highlight of the evening. Clay and his back-up singers were settled on stools across the front of the stage. They were joined by only two other musicians, the guitarist and the pianist. It was time for the acoustic section of the concert.

When Clay started singing Measure of A Man, he sang the first word and immediately, most of the audience began to softly sing along. Clay held the mike out to the audience and the singing sounded beautiful. Clay stopped singing and signaled to his back-ups singers to also stop so the crowd could continue. According to one fan; “It was like our love song to Clay and he knew that we meant it for him.” Another fan said; “The crowd literally poured its heart out singing to him and the look on his face and on the faces of Angela and Quiana as they wiped tears away – just overwhelming. I get choked up just thinking about it. It was such a spontaneous moment and I feel so blessed to have been there.”

The rest of the acoustic set was particularly beautiful and everyone on the stage and in the audience realized that they had just experienced a very special moment.

The Wilkes-Barre concert continued with Clay’s exciting performance of When Doves Cry. Clay was ready to have fun and seemed to be having a good time kidding around with his back-up singer, Angela. At one point, Angela pulled Clay so hard that he stumbled. He laughed so hard that he could not continue singing for a few moments.

The end of his set found Clay sitting on a speaker singing The Way. Somehow, the musicians missed a cue and the beginning of the beautiful song was way off. Clay stopped and said that they were going to start again and after a bit of laughter from the musicians and the audience, Clay sang the song beautifully.

As always, Kelly and Clay ended the concert with a duet of Open Arms. They showed everyone that they were, indeed good friends.

Billboard in Wilkes-Barre

Billboard in Wilkes-Barre

Wilkes-Barre and the Pennsylvania Clay fans welcomed the Independent Tour with lots of excitement. They had a large pre-party before the concert and participated in signing the banner for Clay that traveled from venue to venue. They also put up a billboard on the highway welcoming Clay and the tour to their area. The Wachovia Arena holds around 8000 people and was 98% sold. Pennsylvania certainly showed their love and support for Clay that night.

SueReu put together a wonderful video highlighting the special performance in Wilkes-Barre. ENJOY!!!!

Clay Aiken – Good, Bad, Cunning and Strong!

Thursday, February 16th, 2012

This post is coming to you from 2,580 miles from my home.  Early Thursday morning, I flew from California to New York.  I am here and ready to have a great time seeing Clay as a judge one night and a narrator another night. I imagine that Clay will be amazing in both roles.

The problem with long plane rides is that I am almost asleep as I sit here at my computer.  I had to get up at 4AM to get my flight…add the time difference and even a piece of cheesecake from Juniors didn’t wake me up!!

BUT……….there is fun news so I will do what I can. Hopefully, there will be no glaring spelling mishaps!!

It seems that Donald Trump was a guest on the Today Show, Thursday morning.  The following is the paragraph that accompanies the video:

Video on TODAY.com: Donald Trump tells TODAY’s Matt Lauer that he’ll do whatever he can to help Mitt Romney in his presidential race, and also discusses the latest season of “Celebrity Apprentice,” on which, he says, Clay Aiken is coming on surprisingly strong and nasty.

Nasty??  Clay Aiken??  Well,I love the words a fan found that the dictionary has listed under Nasty:  Tasty, Good, Bad, Cunning and Strong!!!!

So…nasty sounds good to me!! And here is the video:

Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

Did you see the article at Rolling Stone?  The following is what they had to say about Clay.

Clay Aiken

Age: 33

Claim To Fame: The doe-eyed North Carolina-native welled America’s hearts with his beatific balladry on Season Two of American Idol. (He ultimately took second-place to Southern big-boy Ruben Studdard). Aiken has since released six full-length albums, performed on Broadway and after coming out as openly gay in 2008, has become an outspoken activist for gay rights.

What To Expect: Don’t let the fact that he sings like a mermaid misguide you; if preview clips are any indication, this ginger-topped crooner’s got some bite behind that boyish charm. How he matches up with The Donald, however, might be a different story.

This week’s Entertainment Weekly rated Celebrity Apprentice as #4 in The Top 10 Must See List!

QUOTE:

CELEBRITY APPRENTICE
Donald Trump always says that this season’s cast of Celebrity Apprentice is “the best ever”, but with Clay Aiken, Lisa Lampanelli and George Takei (pictured), we’re inclined to believe that he’s right!

So sorry that I have somehow misplaced the link to this so you could see the entire article.  Maybe I will find it after a bit of sleep.

Did you have a chance to see the latest video of Clay and Kelly singing together the other night?  The performance is great and it is so much fun to see how excited the audience was when they saw Clay enter the stage.    ENJOY!!

Clay Aiken – A Musical Week-End!

By musicfan123 · Comments 14511(7)http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F2012%2F02%2F12%2Fclay-aiken-a-musical-week-end%2FClay+Aiken+-+A+Musical+Week-End%212012-02-12+09%3A00%3A53musicfan123http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F%3Fp%3D14511

The 54th Annual GRAMMY Awards will take place tonight in Los Angeles at the Staples Center and will air live on the CBS Television Network from 8–11:30 p.m.  There will be live performances by Bruce Springsteen, the Beach Boys, Paul McCartney. Lil Wayne, Carrie Underwood, the Foo Fighters, Bruno Mars, Kelly Clarkson, and Coldplay

The Grammy Awards have been an American music institution for over a half a century. But what is a “Grammy” anyway?

“Grammy” is short for “Gramophone” and the actual Grammy Awards given out each year are modeled after this odd record player.

According to The Grammy’s Official Website, the actual trophy is manufactured exclusively by Billings Artworks. The trophies are all hand made and assembled. Years ago, the old smaller gramophone had to be revamped because the metals were too soft and there were many problems with the trophy breaking. The trophy was made bigger and grander. The Grammy is assembled in pieces and finally finished off in gold plating. The trophies used for the broadcast are called “stunt” Grammys.

The Grammy Awards are given by the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences, Inc., an organization that was formed in 1957.

According to the Grammy’s Official Website:

In the beginning The Recording Academy owed its survival to members who donated long hours to the emerging professional association. A labor of love, the young Academy may not have prevailed had it not been for the dedication of its charter members…The GRAMMYs are the only peer-presented award to honor artistic achievement, technical proficiency and overall excellence in the recording industry, without regard to album sales or chart position.

The first Grammy Awards were held in 1959 in Los Angeles at the Beverly Hilton. The big winners that year were Domenico Modugno for “Nel Blue Dipinto di Blu (Volare)” which took home Record of the Year and Song of the Year and Henry Mancini for The Music from Peter Gunn which won Album of the Year.

Ella Fitzgerald won for Best Jazz Performance, Individual and The Kingston Trio won for “Tom Dooley” in the Best Country & Western Performance category.

The following are a few little known facts about the Grammys:

  1. Milli Vanilli were the only act to have a Grammy award (for Best New Artist) taken away, after the truth that they didn’t actually sing on their hits surfaced.
  2. Sinead O’Connor is the only artist to refuse a Grammy. She turned it down to protest what she called the “extreme commercialism” of the award.
  3. What do Clay Aiken, the Beach Boys, Led Zeppelin, the Who, Chuck Berry, Jimi Hendrix, the Grateful Dead, the Kinks, and Bob Marley have in common? Not one has won a competitive music Grammy award. Many of them have been given Grammy Lifetime Achievement awards

Personally, I look forward to the year that beautiful voices win Grammys and that Clay Aiken wins his first Grammy.

There was sad news for the music field on Saturday when The Associated Press announced the death of Whitney Houston.  Houston, one of the most successful singers of all time had won 6 Grammys in her lifetime.  Houston was only 48 years old.

The Recording Academy issued the following statement:

Six-time GRAMMY winner Whitney Houston was one of the world’s greatest pop singers of all time who leaves behind a robust musical soundtrack spanning the past three decades. Her powerful voice graced many memorable and award-winning songs. A light has been dimmed in our music community today, and we extend our deepest condolences to her family, friends, fans and all who have been touched by her beautiful voice.

After hearing the news, Clay Aiken posted the following on Twitter:

RIP Whitney Houston. The soundtrack of so many lives. I’m sure Heaven reverberates 2nite with the sound of ur voice. It always was angelic.

CANN sends the deepest condolences to her family and friends.

Clay Aiken – Supporting His Friend!

Twitter was ablaze with lots of messages from Clay Aiken, Kelly Clarkson, and many fans of both of them…Each “tweet” helped paint a picture of two friends, supporting each other and having a great time.

Kelly was performing Tuesday night at the Durham Performing Arts Center in Durham, NC.  The theater that seats 2,700 is a rather new complex that, according to their webpage is

… the largest and most modern Performing Arts Center between Atlanta and Philadelphia and boasts over 2,700 seats. The atmosphere is contemporary yet comfortable with vibrant red carpets and warm wood accents. Seating is intimate with the furthest seat only 135 feet from the stage.

Clay, who was in attendance with his friend, Quiana Parler was seen having a great time and enjoying the concert.  Clay even took a few pictures, however, he needs a few lessons in photography at concerts from some of his fans.  The pictures looked like mine and that is NOT really too good.  However, a huge thanks to Clay for thinking of all of us who loved seeing the pictures even if they were a bit “unique.”

The following are two pictures from the evening fun.  They are great, aren’t they?

Clay in the Audience

Seeing these pictures reminded me of a few from the Independent Tour…it just reminder of how important friendship is and even if you don’t see each other everyday,  you can still have lots of fun!

Did you see Clay and Kelly perform together on the Independent Tour?  Do you follow Clay on Twitter?  I do and I am finding it to be so much fun!

Clay Aiken – A Blast From The Past

Thursday, January 12th, 2012

A HUGE Thank you to all of you who introduced yourself yesterday.  It was an honor to hear from each one of you!!

I tried to watch the People’s Choice Awards Wednesday Night…but…it just made me feel OLD.  I didn’t know many of the people who were winning the awards.  It just wasn’t interesting to me.  I will watch when CLAY AIKEN is nominated!!

So…Wednesday night was the perfect time to spend some time organizing and cleaning up my computer.  I have to be ready for February!  Afterall, its 2012 – The Year of Clay Aiken!

I found the following scans from an interesting magazine article about Clay from January, 2006…  It is titled Teen Magazine – Singapore.  Enjoy!!

I realize it is hard to read….so the following is the article written out so you can read it!

Singapore Teen Magazine interview wrote:
Sheryl: Based on record sales, you’re the most successful runner-up in American Idol history – what’s the reason behind your success?
Clay: Wow, I have no idea! (Pauses) Really, honestly, I don’t know. I guess it’s just the timing of things. When Kelly Clarkson (Winner of American Idol, Season 1) and I released our albums, it was the ‘pop era’, if you could call it that. We were able to give fans what they wanted. Now, the music in the market is mostly urban, so that’s why Fantasia (Winner of American Idol, Season 3) is releasing urban albums. Besides good timing, I really don’t know why, I just thank God for all of it!

Sheryl: You’ve been under the constant scrutiny of the media and the public lately. How do you cope with paparazzi and gossip tabloids?
Clay: Well, it just gets easier over time. When what’s printed becomes more outlandish and far-fetched, it’s easier to pay no attention to them. After you’re more familiar with tabloids and the industry, you start to realize how ridiculous these rumours and statements are. You have to thicken your skin, and learn to laugh at it. Just let it pass!

Sheryl: Share with us some of your most memorable experiences from high school.
Clay: (Excitedly) Oh, it’s definitely when I’m performing on stage! I’ve always sung in musicals and in choirs during my elementary and middle school years. But when I got to high school, I was cut from my senior musical! It got me really depressed, but I’m more than okay now! (Laughs gleefully) Michael Jordan got cut from his high school basketball team, but look now, he’s the Michael Jordan! (More laughter) I’m not saying I’m Michael, but you know, it works out eventually!

Sheryl: What’s your most embarrassing high school memory?
Clay: (Playful sigh) I’ve had so many embarrassing moments that there isn’t really one that stands out! Oh, when I was twelve, I was not popular at all. In fact, I was kind of a dork. When I was going to school, the cool thing to do was sit at the back of the bus. I was the kid who always sat right in front, and because I lived further away from school, my stop would be one of the lasts. So as more and more kids got off the bus, I’d slowly try to sneak closer to the back of the bus. It didn’t work, I got beat up by the cooler kids for moving too far back! Not cool at all.

Sheryl: Did you have a nickname back in high school?
Clay: Hmm… No, not really. There wasn’t a nickname that stuck. I think that’s a good thing!

Sheryl: Besides appearances, how have you changed since high school?
Clay: Well, I’m definitely ore confident than I was then. (Jokingly) I’ve got a few more friends now! I had friends who were older than I was, and they’d tell me that once you got out of high school, no one really cares how popular you were. I didn’t believe them until I graduated and went out into the ‘real world’. They were right, the superficial things like whether you were popular or cool in school don’t really matter! So now I’m a lot more comfortable with myself, and I know there are more important things that matter.

Sheryl: You have a bachelor’s degree in Special Education. Is this what you’ve always wanted to study?
Clay: Not always. I was always planning to study music! But when I came out of high school, I spent two years working with kids before going to college and discovered my passion for it. I worked with kids who had autism, and I just kind of fell into it. I still have a huge dream for it! (Clay Aiken is on the Presidential Committee for People with Intellectual Disabilities)

Sheryl: What are some New Year’s resolutions that you have for 2007?
Clay: Oh, I’m a ‘never-make-resolutions’ kind of person. I mean, if there’s something you want to change about yourself, you should just change it now! Why wait until next year? I’m a ‘right-now-resolution’ kind of man. (An amused laugh fills the line)

Sheryl: What can fans (aka Claymates) expect from your latest album, A Thousand Different Ways?
Clay: We had a mandate to do an album of the greatest love songs: it’s a test and a challenge in a way! I want to change them in my own way, you know? Deliver it with a spin to make something that’s true to the song and true to me – a sound different enough to be current and original, yet still genuine.

Sheryl: You’ve toured the United States and Canada on various occasions to promote your albums. When can we expect you in Asia?
Clay: (Energetically) I’d love to come to Singapore! I’ve been to Kuala Lumpur, but that’s as close you guys as I’ve been. We’ve actually be considering it in the last year, it’s been a topic that’s ‘floated’ within conversations. But no promises just yet though!

Clay Aiken – Celebrating Christmas

On November 25, 2003, Clay Aiken was the MC and host of the American Idol Christmas Special shown on FOX-TV.

The show was taped in LA on October 30, 2003.  The following Idols were a part of the show:

From Season 1: Tamyra Grey, Christina Christian, and Kelly Clarkson
From Season 2: Clay Aiken, Ruben Studdard, and Kimberley Locke
They were joined by the American Juniors and the Canadian Idol, Ryan Malcolm.

Besides his role as the MC, Clay sang the following songs:

Simply Having a Wonderful Christmastime – Clay and Ruben Duet
White Christmas – Clay and Kim Duet
Don’t Save It All For Christmas Day – Clay Solo
The First Noel – Clay

The following are 2 examples of the Press for this holiday show…the bolding is mine!

It won’t be a very Justin Christmas this year. ”An American Idol Christmas Special” (Fox, Tuesday, 8 p.m.), will boast carols from ”Idol” hands including Clay Aiken, Kelly Clarkson, Kimberly Locke, Christina Christian, and Ruben Studdard. But Mr. Guarini will be nowhere to be found. Why? ”He was in New Zealand and couldn’t make it,” says ”Idol” producer Ken Warwick. But dry your eyes, Guarini-philes, and take a look how those Idol-ers who DID make it will celebrate the holidays.

FEAT OF CLAY Guarini was originally intended to be the special’s host, but a runner-up who actually sells CDs — Clay Aiken — will fill his shoes. And if the show’s producer is to be believed, Aiken’s talent for emceeing (think Ed Sullivan, not Eminem) matches his preternatural pipes. ”Clay was a total natural,” says Warwick. ”We struck gold there.”

Clay will do plenty of singing as well. He’ll start with ”Don’t Save It All For Christmas Day,” a tune originally attempted by a chanteuse who shares his melodramatic bent, chest-thumper Celine Dion. The Clayster will also belt Irving Berlin’s classic ”White Christmas” with Kimberly Caldwell, and will chime in with ”The First Noel” during a show-closing medley of standards.

INDEPENDENT WOMAN As befits ”Idol”’s first winner, Kelly Clarkson will make the biggest entrance. After all the other participants start things off with a medley, Kelly will strut out alone to sing ”My Grown-up Christmas List,” a track she recorded for the recent album ”American Idol: The Great Holiday Classics” (although it seems a stretch to call that obscure tune — previously recorded by Donny Osmond and Natalie Cole — a classic). She’ll go on to close the show with an a capella version of the carol ”O Holy Night.” That one we’ve heard of.

BIG MAN Second-season winner Ruben Studdard will sing Donny Hathaway’s ”This Christmas” (unaccompanied — even by his ”205” shirt, which he’s long since retired). He’ll then duet with Tamyra Gray on ”Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas.” Along the way, maybe he’ll update the world on why his long-delayed album won’t be ready to grace our stockings.

BEST OF THE REST Gray, meanwhile, will get her own moments to shine, roaring through Mariah Carey’s ”All I Want For Christmas (Is You),” and the more sedate ”Silent Night.” Plus, the winners of this summer’s critically panned spinoff ”American Juniors” will reconvene to sing ”My Perfect Christmas.” Perfect, indeed: That should give you just enough time to hit the refrigerator.

AMERICAN IDOL CHRISTMAS

Idol holiday cheer

Dreaming of a saccharine Christmas? The Idol clan has just the one: Finalists from both seasons of American Idol host American Idol Christmas Nov. 25 at 9 p.m. on channel 3 and 22.

The hour of Christmas tunes is everything fans of the reality show would expect — memorable moments from the winners and painful moments from the runner-ups and group numbers. The only thing missing is blatant product placement and Ryan Seacrest.

Kelly Clarkson — the original American Idol — wisely stays away from the group medleys and sticks to strutting her stuff solo. Her a cappella version of O Holly Night is by far the highlight of the show.

Second season runner-up Clay Aiken MCs most of the show and proves he has so much more stage presence than Ruben Studdard, who won Idol 2. Aiken’s rich pipes are also very well suited to holiday classics.

The velvet teddy bear, Studdard, has a beautiful voice and he best shows it off while doing a soulful duet of Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, with Tamyra Gray. But it must be asked — what wardrobe genius decided to dress the king of sweat in a white fur- trimmed parka? Poor Ruben looks like he’s going to faint if he has to hit one more high note.

However, he doesn’t look as ridiculous as Christina Christian in her tarty ensembles, especially the red ultra-mini she wears while whining through the opening number — there was a reason she was cut.

Special guest Ryan Malcolm, the Canadian Idol winner, also has a costume blunder. The Jacko-esque pants he wears distract from his brief moment in the spotlight.

Malcolm’s voice is smooth and sexy during his version of Let It Snow, but the performance is way too safe.

The best gift of all from the American Idol Christmas special is that Justin Guarini, the runner-up from season one who starred with Clarkson in the movie From Justin to Kelly, is not in the show!

Did you see this show on TV?  Although a bit “cheesy”, I enjoyed watching Clay as he stole the show.

Quote of the Day

It is not always about performance art, but about receiving positive energy from people with positive spirits. Sometimes we can see someone's spirit, and those are the people with great energy. Those are the people that get me through the day, especially on Broadway. -Clay Aiken
