Clay Aiken – Music Education Opens Doors

“Music education opens doors that help children pass from school into the world around them: a world of work, culture, intellectual activity, and human involvement. The future of our nation depends on providing our children with a complete education that includes music.”

Gerald Ford, former President, United States of America

The month of March marks the annual celebration of Music In Our SchoolsThe National Association for Music Education is once again encouraging schools across the country to celebrate Music In Our Schools Month.  MENC, a 100-year-old organization, is for teachers, administrators, students and parents who feel that all students should be able to have access to music in their schools.

Music education is incredibly important to keep in our schools and communities, especially in a time when there have been cutbacks to many music programs.  Music education has been proven to lead students to success in other areas of learning, success in society through practicing co-operation skills (when working together in a band or ensemble), success in developing their intelligence, and success in life.

According to MENC:

The purpose of MIOSM is to raise awareness of the importance of music education for all children – and to remind citizens that school is where all children should have access to music. MIOSM is an opportunity for music teachers to bring their music programs to the attention of the school and the community and to display the benefits school music brings to students of all ages.

For many years, Clay Aiken was involved in this amazing program.  Each year, Clay was asked to make  a PSA in support of Music In Our Schools Month.  He joined top pop, country, and classical musicians who talked about the importance of music education for today’s youth or a personal experience he or she had with music in school.  It was an honor for Clay to be asked, but not really a surprise.  Music was always a big part of his life when he was a student and since he had a college degree in education, the PSA made sense.

Did you ever hear Clay’s PSA on the radio?
