Clay Aiken – Spaghetti or Turkey?

By musicfan123 · Comments 12472(8)http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F2011%2F10%2F10%2Fclay-aiken-spaghetti-or-turkey%2FClay+Aiken+-+Spaghetti+or+Turkey%3F2011-10-10+07%3A30%3A31musicfan123http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F%3Fp%3D12472
Monday, October 10th, 2011

Today is the 2nd Monday of October.  For most of the world, it is just another day, but for the majority of North Americans, the day is important.

Columbus Day is a U.S. holiday that commemorates the landing of Christopher Columbus in the New World on October 12, 1492. It was unofficially celebrated in a number of cities and states as early as the 18th century but did not become a federal holiday until the 1937.  Originally observed every October 12, it was fixed to the second Monday in October in 1971.

In many parts of the United States, Columbus Day has evolved into a celebration of Italian-American heritage. Local groups host parades and street fairs featuring colorful costumes, music and Italian food. In cities and towns that use the day to honor indigenous peoples, activities include pow-wows, traditional dance and lessons about Native American culture.

If you are in New York, the huge Columbus Day parade will begin today at 11:30 AM and lasts until 3PM.

If you are Canadian, Happy Thanksgiving!!  In Canada, the holiday is celebrated on the second Monday of October, however people generally get together for their Thanksgiving meal on any one of the three  days of the  holiday weekend.

Canadians give thanks for a successful harvest. The harvest season falls earlier in Canada compared to the United States due to the simple fact that Canada is further north.   Thanksgiving Day in Canada is celebrated in much the same way as in the United States.  How was the turkey and Pumpkin Pie?

How is Clay Aiken spending the holiday?  I have no idea, but I hope he had some time to enjoy Thanksgiving with his Canadian Family over the week-end.  There is nothing better than spending time with your family.

Today?  Perhaps Clay is celebrating by visiting New York…combining a holiday celebration with some important work.  Whatever or wherever Clay is, we can all wish him the very best of two holidays in two countries.

Do you remember when Clay was featured on the Canadian TV show called E-Talk Daily?  It was broadcast on October 10, 2005, however Clay taped it when the Jukebox Tour visited Toronto.

Clay Aiken – Fall Into Fall

By musicfan123 · Comments 12165(10)http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F2011%2F09%2F23%2Fclay-aiken-fall-into-fall%2FClay+Aiken+-+Fall+Into+Fall2011-09-23+07%3A31%3A34musicfan123http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F%3Fp%3D12165

The falling leaves drift by my window
The falling leaves of red and gold
I see your lips, the summer kisses
The sunburned hands I used to hold

Since you went away the days grow long
And soon I’ll hear old winter’s song
But I miss you most of all, my darling
When autumn leaves start to fall

Lyrics by Johnny Mercer

Fall…Its here…The first touch of Autumn.  Yes, today is the Autumnal Equinox, meaning that the sun will be directly on the Equator of the Earth and the hours of day and night will be equal.

I know that many of you are still suffering through sweltering temperatures and thinking about fall is the furthest thing from your mind.  Some others are being buried in torrential rains.  But a few of you will feel autumn in the air as the chill tickles your skin.

I love it when you see the leaves start to drop, a bit of gold here and a little scarlet there. Early autumn harvests of pumpkins, apples, and grapes tantalize our senses. The fall season gifts us with an array of color, texture, and taste…jack-o-lanterns, pumpkin pie, apple cider and pie, fresh grapes, and wine…I say bring it on!

I have no idea where Clay Aiken is today.  If he is in Raleigh, he will celebrate the beginning of fall in the rain…the weatherman says there will be a 90% chance of rain!  And if he is in New York, he will have to carry an umbrella as thunderstorms are in the forecast

Clay…come to California!!  It will be 85 degrees here and it is clear and calm
I know this is a stretch, but the following video of Clay singing Falling is the best I could do!!  Enjoy!

Clay Aiken – New York, New York!

By musicfan123 · Comments 10645(11)http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F2011%2F06%2F27%2Fclay-aiken-new-york-new-york-2%2FClay+Aiken+-+New+York%2C+New+York%212011-06-27+07%3A45%3A45musicfan123http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F%3Fp%3D10645

Late Friday night, the state of New York legalized same-sex marriage. With a historic vote by its Legislature, New York became the sixth, and by far the most populous state to legalize same-sex marriage. Governor Andrew Cuomo signed the bill into law Friday night.  He said:

I am very proud of New York and I’m very proud of the statement we made today.

Same-sex couples will be able to get married by the end of July, as the law will go into effect in 30 days.

More than 35% of Americans now live in states where gay couples can effectively attain the rights and responsibilities of marriage.

According to The Associated Press, several recent opinion polls have shown that a majority of Americans now approve of same-sex marriages.  It was only 10 years ago that there was less than 40% support.

Sometimes it is important to look at some of the people who are affected by this new legislation.  It certainly makes it easier to understand why this is so important.

Meet Richard Dorr, 84, left, and John Mace, 91, at their home in New York City where they both work as voice teachers. They have been partners for 61 years, and have been hoping that legislation passes that would enable them to get married in New York.  They plan to seek a marriage license as soon as possible but do not plan a big ceremony…just a couple of witnesses and a justice of the peace.

One of New York’s most famous gay couples is Neil Patrick Harris and his longtime partner, David Burtka.  On Friday night, Harris tweeted words of encouragement to the State Senate.  He wrote that he’d “sure love to get married.”

Harris followed up on Saturday morning with another tweet that said:

“David and I did propose to each other, but over five years ago! We’ve been wearing engagement rings for ages, waiting for an available date.”

It only makes sense that the pair should be allowed to marry.  They have been together for many years and they are fathers to fraternal twins born in October 2010.

On Sunday, Ben Cohn posted a touching picture of himself and his long-time partner, Sean McDaniel…the important word…”engaged.”  These two young people have their entire life ahead of them and now they can share it with someone they love and adore and have all the rights that we all have.  Ben and Sean have performed and toured often with Clay Aiken.  They are both outstanding musicians and seem like great people.  I bet they got a mighty big “Congratulations” from Clay!

I saw a wonderful post from an active Clay fan on Sunday.  She commented that she wished that there was a way for Clay to know and understand that he has made a huge impact when it comes to GLBT rights.  She related that it was so much fun to see the celebration on the Clay-Boards and even FaceBook when the news of the Marriage Equality Bill passed.  She said:

I’m sure some of those people would have been following it anyway, but it would be my guess that most of them would not be following this particular movement if it were not for Clay. He has led the way for people to get educated on this cause, to support the cause and to celebrate the victories and agonize over the defeats. He did that and I wish he could see it.

Clay Aiken – Popeater Article

Ashley Iasimone wrote a wonderful article about The Day In The Life of Clay Aiken.  Published at PopEater, the article is a great blend of the business of the day and a look at Clay and his personality.  There is also a wonderful album of over 60 pictures with the article.  They are amazing.

Be sure and visit Popeater and let them know how much we appreciate the coverage of Clay Aiken and his busy schedule.  You can visit them at POPEATER

It’s the morning after Clay Aiken released his new album, ‘Tried and True.’ Backstage at ‘The View,’ the singer sits on a plush green sofa in his dressing room, surrounded by others but in his own world, eyes glues to his iPad as he waits for his call to set. Aiken starts his day out in a solitary mode, but perks up when he and his crew mull over which cover he should choose for an upcoming DVD release. Across the hall are the dressing rooms of Belinda Carlisle, who is also appearing on today’s show, and guest host and ‘Sex and the City‘ actor Mario Cantone, both of whom Aiken chats with before going on camera.

“I did not celebrate for the album at all,” Aiken admits to PopEater, stifling a yawn. “I’ve been working pretty hard. Typically, when an album comes out, you spend most of your day doing press and interviews and whatnot.”

This is one of those days. Starting out in midtown New York City in the early hours of the day at ‘The View’ (with the PopEater crew in tow, as well as a busy itinerary that runs until roughly 5PM and includes stops at ABC, CNN and ‘Talk Stoop‘ in hand), it’s clear to see that he’s the type of guy who needs a little breather between charming talk show hosts, reporters and fans with his smooth vocal performances and dry sense of humor. Although the fresh-faced Aiken says that he usually doesn’t have a problem with mornings, the week has been so busy that he’s been feeling slightly sleep deprived.

“The most difficult part of the day when you’re doing this press thing is having to get up so early and getting started to early. Interestingly enough, someone just said to me yesterday, ‘Oh, you just have to sing and talk,’ but it’s tiring! You wouldn’t think it would be so tiring, but my brain has to work for these things, and that’ll wear you out,” he says with a laugh.

Still, Aiken, who has been relatively out of the spotlight this year, is proud to be talking about ‘Tried and True,’ no matter how exhausting it might get. The album is a departure from his previous releases in more ways than one — not only did Aiken record a collection of standards like ‘Unchained Melody,’ ‘Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You’ and ‘It’s Only Make Believe’ rather than modern pop songs, he actually called all the shots. “I got to be a part of the process from beginning to end, from ‘What type of album do you want to do?’ to ‘OK, let’s do that,’” Aiken says. “‘What songs do you want to do? OK, let’s do that. What type of producer do you want?’ I got to be very hands-on with every part of it, which was different. In addition to it being kind of sonically different to what I’ve done, it was different to be a part of that. It gives you more ownership, and it just really makes it more my baby.”

“This is where the fun starts, ladies,” Aiken, bringing his iPad back out to take his chances at a frustrating round of Solitaire, tells us as we board a waiting car that will transport us to our next stop, ABC. Once he starts his game, he’s in it to win it. “This is not looking good. And if I lose, I get real cranky,” he jokes, his gaze still locked on the game. “I give up at three minutes. There’s no point. That two of hearts is underneath there, and I can’t move him without a red queen, and I’m not gonna get one.”

Seven years ago, Aiken briefly left his hometown of Raleigh, N.C. to get his start on what propelled his oncoming fame as a pop singer — the second season of ‘American Idol.’ After coming in a close second to contestant Ruben Studdard, he went on to launch his recording career. As a performer, Aiken undoubtedly enjoyed his time on the show, but he has not watched it for at least five years now, and, while he understands why he’s still asked about it, he doesn’t have much to say about its current state. Aiken explains that the idea of watching it now makes him a bit nervous and adds, “People change and grow. Once you know how the sausage is made, you don’t want to eat it anymore. It’s a part of who I am, obviously, but it’s not a part of my weekly routine.”

As the van pulls over in front of ABC’s headquarters, Aiken looks forward to finding himself a grilled cheese sandwich from the cafeteria for lunch, preferably made with cheddar, American and/or provolone — “Those are the only three I like,” he says. We check in at the security desk, head up the escalator and hang out in a news conference room while he once again waits to go on camera. Aiken munches on his grilled cheese, slips out of the room for his interview, returns and watches his recent appearance on the ‘The Joy Behar Show,’ shaking his head at the fact that CNN.com is running an item about how he called Simon Cowell an “a–hole” — a lovable one, that is, all in good fun.

Today, he’s returning to CNN for another interview, which he’s psyched about. “CNN is on all the time in my house and I’m upset I can’t get CNN International. I’m very bothered by that,” Aiken laments. This is not a disingenuous endorsement — Aiken gladly calls himself “that big a nerd,” and his hobbies are pretty telling of his personality: “That’s pretty much what I do when I’m alone. I watch CNN. I don’t like crowds. I’m kind of a homebody. I’m a little bit of a hermit. I don’t really go out and do too much at all. I’m relatively boring in my free time, and I’m fine with that.”

In fact, after the CNN reporter jokingly offers him a job and we leave the network to head to Cat Greenleaf’s ‘Talk Stoop’ in Brooklyn for one last interview, Aiken pokes fun at his own “boring” nature and then remains quiet, save a business call or two. He’s in one of the most fast-paced cities in the world but his initial excitement for New York City has waned. “When I lived here for ‘Spamalot,’ I kind of got my fill of New York City,” he says. “I mean, I love coming here. I actually like it quite a bit. But it’s not like I’m gonna go see the sites or anything. What is there to do? Clubs, I guess? No thanks.”

It was around the time of his run in ‘Spamalot’ two years ago that Aiken came out to the media, the “Yes, I’m Gay” headline emblazoned on the cover of People magazine. “When anybody comes out, there are going to be people who are supportive and people who are not,” Aiken says, referring to fans – including those who he thinks still refer to themselves as the devoted “Claymates” — and the general public. “Obviously, I was doing ‘Spamalot’ at the time and I was kind of nervous. I specifically remember that night, thinking, ‘OK, I’m going to walk out prepared to be booed,’ and nobody did. And people were very supportive. People have been very supportive throughout the whole process and it didn’t really change.”

With ‘Tried and True,’ Aiken goes back to what he knows best: home and the music that he heard his mother play while he was growing up. He cites his mom, who often sang in the car as well as at clubs and weddings with a local band, as one of his biggest influences. In particular, she always had a dream that Aiken would record ‘Unchained Melody,’ head out to Nashville with it and have a big hit. Now, Aiken is raising his own son, Parker.

“For the most part, around the house, we don’t have that much music playing,” Aiken says. “For some reason, I’m nervous to sing for him. My son doesn’t like to listen to me sing, but he enjoys listening to other people sing. Maybe kids just don’t like to hear their parents, ever. When they’re teenagers they don’t want to hear them. When they’re babies they don’t want to hear ‘em sing. Maybe it’s just a genetic thing.”

So maybe his kid doesn’t have the musical bug yet — he is only two years old, after all — but what if he one day wants to follow in his dad’s footsteps? Aiken, simply a father looking out for his son, is quick to quip, “I don’t plan on that happening. I obviously will encourage him in whatever he wants to, whatever he’s passionate about, but I’m just gonna hope it’s not this.”

When we arrive at the Cobble Hill brownstone where Aiken will be interviewed for ‘Talk Stoop’ with Cat Greenleaf, he changes into a plaid shirt, accessorized with suspenders — “I’m sitting on the stoop, why not?” he rationalizes — and puts on a smile for Greenleaf’s crew and family. His final press appearance of the day is relaxed, the sun is shining and Aiken treats Greenleaf to a brief a cappella performance.

Aiken’s live performance will soon be taken to the road this summer when he embarks on his co-headlining tour with old ‘Idol’ friend Ruben Studdard, which kicks off on July 23 in Asheville, N.C. In a way, as of late, things really have come full circle for Aiken. “We’re two very, very, very, very different people and we’re kind of brought together by music, which I think is kind of nice and somewhat poetic,” Aiken says. “We are gonna be able to do this on the road together and kind of share what we both love.”

Be sure and watch the video  at AOL or Popeater.  This is a great bit of publicity for Clay and it would be nice to show our support.

Clay Aiken – Handprints Make A Gooey Mess!

For years, people have been talking about the expressive hands of Clay Aiken.  They comment on his ability to express his emotions through his hands. His hands seem to add a special touch to his song performances and when he talks, his hands are busy putting the added punctuation to the conversation.

On April 8, 2008, Clay Aiken did something different with his hands.  He put his hand impressions in some gooey mess (was it clay, cement??) at Planet Hollywood in New York.  As part of a photo op and press exposure, Clay represented the Broadway musical, Spamalot and his new CD, On My Way Here.  The handprints were to be used on the Planet Hollywood Wall of Handprints.

Some of Clay’s fans were able to attend the event.  It was reported that Planet Hollywood was filled with Monty Python material.  All the screens in the restaurant were showing Monty Python and the “What A Difference Clay Makes” pamphlets were handed out to all in attendance.

Looking handsome as always, Clay was dressed in dark jeans and a dark blue shirt and tie.  His hair was very blond and very straight.

After rolling up his sleeves, Clay held his hands in the cement while the photographers took their pictures.  NBC and Fox News were both there to cover the event.  Their cameras were up front, almost in Clay’s face.

Clay chatted with many members of the press about his experiences in Spamalot and about his new CD.  He made sure they knew the concept of the album.  Clay also did a lot of taped “lead-ins” for the news shows.  It was a big press experience.

Finally, Clay was able to leave with Jerome by his side.  As he left, he stopped and took a picture with some children who had been watching from outside.  Sure sounds like something Clay would do!

Lucky for us, there were lots of pictures taken that day.  Here are a few of my favorites.

Clay Aiken – It’s Clay Day

February 22, 2007…CLAY DAY!!…………Well, it was Clay Day at The Morning Show with Mike and Juliet. A new show to the morning line-up, the program was broadcast live from the Fox studios in New York.  The show was launched on January 22, 2007 so Clay Aiken was a part of their first month of shows.

Acting as the guest co-host for the entire hour, Clay looked relaxed and spoke as through he had done research on the topics before he appeared on the show.

The show began with a karaoke segment that was filmed the night before the taping.  Because Clay was under the weather, he did not sing at the club, however, he did act as a judge and even participated in a short dance with Juliet.

At one point of the program, Clay bundled up in his winter coat and went outside to see the “Claymobile.”  Put together by one of Clay’s ardent fans, Clay seemed surprised that there was so much memorabilia on the car.  He also participated in a Fact or Fiction quiz.

Some of the topics of the show included a discussion on Anna Nicole Smith and a craft segment to help put care packages together for the military overseas.  A guest on the show was an eight year old girl who tried to sing like Jennifer Hudson.  Clay also revealed that he would be traveling for UNICEF in April.  He did not include where he was going.

According to some members of the live audience, Juliet and Mike seemed thrilled to have Clay there and invited him back to co-host.   The producer of the show was overwhelmed by Clay’s visit to the show.  There were over 300 requests for tickets and there were only 52 seats in the studio.  The show did add some seat outside in a viewing lounge.

This TV appearance of Clay’s was outstanding and showed that Clay was not only a great singer, but a true entertainer.  I hope we see him on TV again in this type of show.

I found these videos on YouTube.  It’s fun to be able to re-live the show.

Clay Aiken – New York, New York!!

Sunday, January 24th, 2010

The day was January 24, 2008 and Clay Aiken was up early for a television appearance, promoting the musical Spamalot.

Visiting with Mike and Juliet on the Fox Morning Show, Clay looked great with his VERY blond hair.

Clay’s visit was short, but fun as he discussed how much he hurt from all the dancing in the show.  He also bragged about his loyal and energetic fans who were a part of the audience that morning.  It was reported that some of them had been lined up outside all night, hoping they would get in to the taping.

Juliet asked Clay how he liked living in New York.  His answer was diplomaric as he said it was very different, but he liked that everything was always open.  He also said that he had not really had a chance to unpack yet because the show and rehearsals had been keeping him so busy.

Clay was asked if he had recovered from his job of co-host duty earlier in the year and then expressed an interest in having him back.  Too bad the show was cancelled.

The video is short, but it is fun to see Clay relaxed and having a good time with the hosts.

Quote of the Day

It is not always about performance art, but about receiving positive energy from people with positive spirits. Sometimes we can see someone's spirit, and those are the people with great energy. Those are the people that get me through the day, especially on Broadway. -Clay Aiken
