Clay Aiken – A Crowning Achievement

By musicfan123 · Comments 13711(16)http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F2011%2F12%2F22%2Fclay-aiken-a-crowning-achievement%2FClay+Aiken+-+A+Crowning+Achievement2011-12-22+07%3A43%3A57musicfan123http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F%3Fp%3D13711

Throughout the world, great cities are defined by their unique icons; London has Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament; Paris has its Eiffel Tower; Washington has the Washington Monument, the Capitol and the White House; Athens has the Acropolis; and New York has the Statue of Liberty, the Great White Way of Times Square, Rockefeller Center, and Carnegie Hall.

The world-famous Carnegie Hall is primarily a concert venue, but it is also a place of extraordinary excellence.  For over a century, it has been the dream and crowning achievement of every musician to perform at Carnegie Hall.

From the outside, the building is not very imposing.  It is a brick and terra cotta building in the style of the Italian Renaissance.  It is the 2,760 seat, multi-balconied, main concert hall that makes the venue so impressive.  It is well known for its amazing acoustics.

In 1889, Andrew Carnegie presented the city of New York with a $2-million gift for the Music Hall. The site purchased by the philanthropist for the concert house (renamed Carnegie Hall in 1898) was located on Seventh Avenue and Fifty-seventh Street, near a stretch of vacant lots, coal yards, and scattered row houses.

The opening of Carnegie Hall took place on the 5th May 1891. Walter Damrosh and Peter Llyich Tchaikovsky lead the opening ceremony of the hall. The building continued to be owned by the Carnegie family  until 1925.  Because of its outstanding acoustics, Carnegie Hall became the home of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra.

Carnegie Hall has conducted more than fifty thousand performances since it’s opening. It presents classical, jazz, folk, world and popular music with breakthrough and veteran performers. Since opening in 1891, this concert hall has become the emblem of musical achievement around the world, and has showcased the world’s finest artists—from Tchaikovsky to Mahler, Horowitz to Callas to Bernstein, and even Judy Garland and the Beatles.

After February 20, 2012, the name of Clay Aiken can be added to the list of musicians that have performed at Carnegie Hall.

The Distinguished Concerts International – New York announced earlier this week that Clay will be a special guest on their President’s Day concert titled “Reflections of Life.”  Clay will be joining Conductor, Timothy Seelig and composer/conductor, Greg Gilpin in an evening filled with musical excellence.

Do you plan on attending the concert in February?  If so, please take notes of Clay’s performance, as the venue does not allow any recording or videos.

2012 – The year of Clay Aiken!!

Hello from the exciting city of New York.  This Californian is certainly enjoying the city.

I am still in awe of Clay Aiken’s performance Sunday at the Home For The Holidays Concert.  No one sings My Grown Up Christmas List like Clay.  It was almost prayer-like and everyone seemed to stop and listen to every word.  And, another “shout-out” to Ben Cohn.  His arrangement of this song was amazing.  I am so glad that Ben and Clay work so well together.

I am so glad that there are at least 3 different videos of Sunday’s performance.  I know many of you have already seen this You-Tube, but I thought I should post it here too.  It is always fun to watch Clay performances and so, just stop and and watch again.

The following pictures are a few that I have taken while walking around New York.  I love my new iPhone, even if I can’t crop or edit until I get home.

I tried to take some pictures of places that have been mentioned recently.  It seems they were a part of Clay’s project in New York.

What Year Did Clay Sing Here?

Are you counting the days until the Gala?  We have so much to look forward to.

Clay Aiken Skates For Charity!

Sunday, May 15th, 2011

In May of 2004, Clay Aiken was busy with professional duties almost every day.  He performed on American Idol,  sang at Wango Tango, performed on many TV shows including The Tonight Show, The Early Show, Ryan Seacrests Show, and Entertainment Tonight, sang with Heather Headley for Broadway Cares and hosted Fantasia’s hometown party in Greensboro.  Clay was also featured in at least five magazines during the month.

On May 15th, Blades On Ice, a popular Figure skating magazine, published an article that featured Clay and his special day of skating for the BAF/National Inclusion Project.  The article was positive and provided Clay the opportunity to share information about the BAF.

American Idol’s Clay Aiken Dons Skates for Charity
By Marge Reynolds

Clay Aiken, whose first CD (Measure of a Man) recently shipped triple platinum, came in second on American Idol 2 last May but his star soared well beyond that Fox show in the muisic pop world ever since. BLADES On Ice magazine caught up with him when this auburn haired pop sensation took to the ice in his hometown of Raleigh, North Carolina to venture into the skating realm.

“Now why is everybody thinking I am going to fall out there? I’ve gone roller and ice skating as a YMCA counselor so I have skated a little before,” said Aiken with a laugh.

The 25 year old Aiken donned hockey skates December 21-22 when his foundation, the Bubel Aiken Foundation held a skating/hockey fundraiser in conjunction with the NHL’s Carolina Hurricanes Kind N’ Community Foundation at the Raleigh North Carolina’s RBC Center. These two foundations announced a formal parnership just prior to their first public joint event at a press conference.

Aiken said, “It is a thrill for me to have such support from my hometown. I am excited about our partnership and the opportunitites we will bring together to children with special needs.

“We want to break down those walls and erase the lines that divide kids with and without disablitities. I am very thankful to the Hurricanes for the opportunity to help spread the word about The Bubel Aiken Foundation.”

On Sunday afternoon, immediately following the Hurricanes “Skate with the “Canes” charity event, Aiken took to the ice with foundation volunteers, YMCA staff, family and friends along with 100 children for “Skate with Clay.” Fifty participants with a special need disability and 50 “regular kids” were selected via sign up at one of the local YMCA branches, the Banks D. Kerr Family YMCA, two weeks prior.

Most participants were local North Carolina residents but several traveled great distances from other states, including Minnesota. Children received a specially designed Bubel Aiken Hurricanes jersey that matched the one Aiken wore.

During this skating activity Aiken’s face lit up as the children approached him, particularly those who had special needs as his degree is in special education. Ever sensitive to the special needs participants, when the crowd around him would grow large, he left the rink with his bodyguard (Jerome) and popped up in a new area.

“We have children both with and without disabilities who will do this activity together. It’s not about one group of kids or one group of adults. It’s about everybody doing things together and being included and breaking down the barriers,” said Aiken.

Wachovia Bank sponsored underwrote all their expenses for this charity event according to the bank’s marketing director, John Ward. Aiken first formally announced on July 28, 2003 the birth of his BAF foundation at a Wachovia Bank appearance in NYC.

Aiken also performed on skates to a sold-out crowd between periods during the December 22 hockey game of the Carolina Hurricanes against Dallas Stars and his foundation benefited from ticket sales.

“I am very excited to be here today,” said Aiken. “Each person has a purpose and I feel like this is one of the reasons I’ve been so fortunate to do this.”

For this game 200 seats were sold in two boxes that had been donated by the Hurricanes. Aiken then visited the donor boxes briefly during the second period of the hockey game. according to Emma Bennett, Community Relations Manager of the Hurricanes, “A large percentage of any ticket sold, after we first began planning this a month prior, were also donated to the Bubel Aiken Foundation by the Hurricanes.

Following the hockey game, Aiken briefly met Olympic Champion, Kristi Yamaguchi by the elevators reserved for his use during this hockey game appearance. Yamaguchi who owns his CD and also resides in Raleigh said, “He seems like a very nice guy. I hear his music all time on Raleigh radio. He has an amazing voice and is very talented.”

He first sang the Star Spangled Banner wearing skates just inside the rink barriers prior to the game’s start but after the first period he came out singing I Will Carry You from his hit CD and continued skating throughout this number. According to the arena staff, an NHL rule affects the length of time an individual other than the players can be on the ice, so for the second period where he sang three additional songs, he sang from a huge lift by the Zamboni entrance.

Ever the perfectionist, Aiken practiced beforehand at the Rockefeller Center outdoor rink while in NYC. He said, “I hope I don’t fall today. I practiced at Rockefeller Center and I did pretty well. We had to outrun somebody at one point.”

Aiken announced plans to launch a national YMCA program in conjunction with the Bubel Aiken Foundation that will be tested first in North Carolina for inclusion of special needs children in YMCA programs. “We wanted to do this locally (first) with local YMCA’s and eventually want to take it nationally,” said Aiken.

Aiken draws from his own experiences with YMCA programs and that motivated him to have the two organizations work together.

“From my own experience at the ‘Y’ I saw kids being turned away from programs because their staff was not trained or didn’t have the correct ratio to work with kids with special needs in the same environment, and that is where our motivation comes from,” said Aiken.

The mission statement of The Bubel Aiken Foundation is to provide services and financial assistance to facilitate fully the integration of children with disabilities into the life environment of those without.

Aiken previously toured as part of the American Idol 2 ensemble early last summer and his popularity continues to swell at a rapid pace. He graced the covers of Rolling Stone, Entertainment Weekly and had major features in Time Magazine, People Magazine, and just about every teen magazine imaginable. He appeared on Saturday Night Live and nearly all the major talk shows.

Aiken got his feet wet with several radio station concert appearances in December around the country for three of four songs before joining forces with American Idol from the first season, Kelly Clarkson for their joint Independent tour. This duo toured 30 cities, beginning on February 22 in Charlotte, N.C. and concluding in St. Paul, Minn, on April 16.

During this tour they both met up with the Hughes family following the Long Island concert on March 4. “Clay and Kelly were arguing over whom was the bigger figure skating fan when they met Sarah backstage just after the concert. They both were fantastic in concert and it was so much fun to meet them,” said her sister Emily Hughes.

Aiken has publicly mentioned the possibility of a second tour leg that could include appearances in Canada but dates are not yet set according to his publicist.

Aiken announced in late March that he plans to return to the studio to work on a new Christmas album when his tour concludes. According to Aiken the goal is to release it in 2004. Aiken’s American Idol top 12 outfit from American Idol 2 “Motown Night’ is currently on display at the N.C. Museum of History through Sept. 6 in Raleigh.

Several sources suggest that Aiken will return to a skating venue in 2004, but this time the plan is to include performances by elite skating champions. (Look for further details on the BLADES On Ice website when arrangements are more finalized.)

Aiken earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in special education on Dec. 20 in Charlotte, N.C. from the University of North Carolina Charlotte. After completing an independent study program where he researched how to set up a foundation, he went the extra mile and actually set up this BAF foundation. One of its goals is to give out grants to help facilitate inclusion programs for special needs children.

Aiken did not fall on the ice and succeeded in making “Skate with Clay” special for the children that participated. Aiken recently told the Associated Press, “A lot of people overlook the work that the foundation is trying to do. That’s the benefit of me being in this position, is the opportunity to bring attention to a cause that’s personal to me that doesn’t really have a voice.

Clay Aiken – Listed As Executive Producer

On November 28, 2006, Clay Aiken released a studio EP titled All Is Well.  Originally released as an exclusive recording for Wal-Mart, the popular album finally became available on iTunes in December of 2007.

There are four songs on the All Is Well EP.  The Playlist is:

  1. All Is Well
  2. Christmas Waltz
  3. O Come O Come Emmanuel
  4. My Grown-Up Christmas List

Clay Aiken is listed, along with Jaymes Foster as an Executive Producer of the EP.  All Is Well debuted at #54 on the Billboard Comprehensive Albums chart. This is unusual as it is unusual for an EP disc to chart or to have its sales tracked.

The title song, All Is Well, was written by Michael W. Smith and recorded for his album Michael W Smith Christmas in 1989.  Because it was a popular song, Smith included the song on 2 more of his albums.

Michael W. Smith has released 22 albums and ten books and has received many awards, including Dove awards and Grammy awards.  Smith is currently on a Christmas tour and will be performing another tour called 2Friends with Amy Grant in early 2011.

Clay Aiken was the featured musical guest on the Capital One Holiday Celebration on Ice in 2007.  The show was televised on Christmas Day and Clay sang songs from his albums Merry Christmas With Love and All Is Well.

Todd Eldredge is a former World Champion and 4-time U.S. Champion.  He chose All Is Well for his skating performance for the Celebration on Ice show.  For many in the audience, the performance of the two artists was the highlight of the show.  Eldredge also used Clay’s recording of this song for his Rockefeller Center performance for the Today Show.

The following video is from the Christmas broadcast of the Capital One Holiday on Ice.  I was lucky enough to be in Las Vegas for the recording of this show?  Were you there too?

Clay Aiken – Kick- Off To The Holiday Season

In a press release on Thursday, November 4, 2010, NBC announced the talent lineup for the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree Lighting.  The holiday tree lighting will broadcast live on NBC, on Tuesday, November 30, 2010 at 8:00 – 9:00 p.m. ET/PT.

The 13th Annual Christmas in Rockefeller Center special will feature performances by many celebrity musicians. The star-studded performance will include:

  • Susan Boyle from Britain’s Got Talent
  • Mariah Carey, a top recording artist
  • Charice, the teen sensation from the Philippines
  • Sheryl Crow, the Grammy winning singer
  • Jackie Evancho, the 10 year old soprano from America’s Got Talent
  • Josh Groban, from Los Angeles
  • Katherine Jenkins, a Welch singer
  • Kylie Minogue from Australia

The Radio City Rockettes will also be featured in the extravaganza.  Natalie Morales and Al Roker will host the show.

For many, the lighting of the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree is the kick off to the holiday season.  Many families, friends, and individuals make it a point to attend the lighting ceremony every year.

The Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree is a worldwide symbol of the holidays in New York City. The tree, traditionally a Norway Spruce, is illuminated by 30,000 environmentally friendly LED lights on five miles of wire, and crowned by a Swarovski crystal star. Tens of thousands crowd the sidewalks for the event and hundreds of millions watch the Tree Lighting Ceremony broadcast live across the globe.

This year’s tree is a very respectable 74-foot high and 40 foot in diameter!  The tree lighting ceremony is free and no tickets are needed.  However it is advised you arrive early to secure a prime viewing spot for the 2-hour lighting ceremony.

I know that each of the musicians who will be participating in this program are wonderful, however, I would much rather see and hear Clay Aiken.  Nobody sings Christmas songs better than Clay.  Maybe he will get a return visit in 2011.

On November 30, 2004, Clay Aiken was part of the star-studded hour-long special on NBC celebrating the lighting the world’s most famous tree.

Co-hosts for the evening were Al Roker and Nancy O’Dell.  Olympic Gold Medallist Sarah Hughes skated to Vanessa Williams who sang “Silver and Gold.”

Besides Clay, the musical lineup for the special included performances by Hilary Duff, Kenny Chesney, Tony Bennett, Jessica Simpson, Nick Lachey, Chris Isaak, Michael Buble, Vanessa Williams, and The Radio City Rockettes. Chicago was the special house band for national telecasts.

Clay was dressed for cold weather in an overcoat, striped scarf and a black hat.  Clay sang “Winter Wonderland” during the National broadcast, and “Hark the Herald Angels Sing/O Come All Ye Faithful” during the earlier hour broadcast that was only shown in New York.

The following are some videos of the 2004 performances by Clay.  It looks like so much fun!

Clay Aiken – “I Won’t Fall! I Won’t Fall!”

The United States Figure Skating Nationals have been taking place all week.  As an avid fan of figure skating, I have been watching every moment I can.  Thursday night, the ladies skated their short program and it took almost 4 hours.

As I was watching, I couldn’t help but think about Clay Aiken and his escapades on the ice.

The first time we heard about Clay on the ice was on December 21, 2003.  Called Skate With Clay, the Bubel/Aiken Foundation and the Carolina Hurricanes sponsored a great afternoon of skating.  Clay spent the afternoon at the RBC Center, ice-skating with 100 children from the local area.  The purpose of the event was to mingle children with and without special needs together.  It gave them the opportunity to learn from each other and make new friends.

According to Dawn Graham, a volunteer from the foundation:

“Clay spoke and skated with each of the children, asking their names, where they went to school, etc. He looked to have as much fun as they did! They were each outfitted with a specially made Bubel/Aiken Foundation jersey, and Clay was sporting a ‘Canes jersey with ‘Aiken 03’ on the back. Some of the children were not physically able to skate, so some of them were pushed across the ice on metal chairs…”

The next evening, Clay performed at the Carolina Hurricanes/Dallas Stars Hockey game.  After singing the Star Spangled Banner, Clay entertained the crowd with a short concert.  The highlight of the evening occurred during the first intermission.  Seemingly without any concern, Clay took to the ice and sang “I Will Carry You” as he skated around the arena.  Besides sounding wonderful, Clay skated with confidence and got a huge round of applause.

Clay made a quick appearance on ice at Rockefeller Center.  When he was in town for the Christmas Tree Lighting, Clay tried to get in a short skate.  He probably hoped he wouldn’t get caught, but……he did and we got some cute pictures!

The next time we saw Clay on the ice was in Las Vegas on November 6, 2007.  Clay was tapped to be the exclusive musical guest on “Capital One Holiday Celebration on Ice.”  Clay was joined by many World and National champions as they celebrated the holiday season.

The program was broadcast on TV on Christmas Day.  At that time, the audience got to see some back stage film of Clay getting a skating lesson from Olympian Sasha Cohen.  The program ended with Clay joining the skaters as they took their bows by skating around the arena.  It looked like Clay was having a great time.

I wonder if Clay has been skating recently.  He seemed so at ease on the ice and seemed to have a good time.

Are you watching the US Figure Skating Nationals??  You can catch the ladies on NBC on Saturday night at 9pm (Eastern Time).  The girls are skating for placement on the Olympic team.

The following videos show Clay as he makes his way around the ice.

Clay Aiken – An Overcoat, A Striped Scarf and a Black Hat

Sunday, November 29th, 2009

There is nothing that symbolizes the commencement of the holiday season more than the lighting of the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree.  The Ceremony is always a fun event, full of pomp and celebrities.

The Rockefeller Center Christmas tree tradition began formally in 1933 when a tree was decked with 700 lights and placed in front of the then eight-month old RCA Building, which is now the GE Building. The Christmas tradition was enhanced in 1936 with the opening of the Rockefeller Plaza outdoor ice skating pond. NBC-TV televised the first tree lighting in 1951 on “The Kate Smith Show” and as part of the nationwide “Howdy Doody” television show from 1953-55.

The Christmas tree that adorns Rockefeller Center is usually a Norway Spruce. The director of the Rockefeller Center gardens prefers the tree be between 75 and 90 feet tall and proportionally wide. Norway Spruce that grow in forests don’t typically reach these proportions, so the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree tends to be one that was planted in someone’s front or back yard. There is no compensation offered in exchange for the tree, other than the pride of having donated the tree that appears in Rockefeller Center.

Over five miles of lights are used to decorate the tree every year. Only the lights and the star decorate the tree. The tree is recycled and the 3 tons of mulch are donated to the Boy Scouts. The largest portion of the trunk is donated to the U.S. Equestrian team in New Jersey to use as an obstacle jump.

On November 30, 2004, Clay Aiken was part of the star-studded hour-long special on NBC celebrating the lighting the world’s most famous tree.

Co-hosts for the evening were Al Roker and Nancy O’Dell.  Olympic Gold Medalist Sarah Hughes skated to Vanessa Williams who sang “Silver and Gold.”

At the beginning of Clay’s live segment during the National Broadcast, the audience sang “Happy Birthday” to Clay, as it was his 26th birthday.  Towards the end of the show, Clay joined the line of guests, as they closed the show by singing the song, “Let It Snow.”

Clay Aiken fans were excited to see Clay as a part of this exciting evening. It was an excellent opportunity to be seen and for people to be introduced to Clay’s Christmas album. “Mary Christmas With Love.”

Quote of the Day
