Did you know that today is World Smile Day?
Harvey Ball, a commercial artist, was the man that created the smiley face in 1963. It is now the most recognized symbol of good will and cheer on the planet.
Ball chose the first Friday in October to celebrate World Smile Day. The first World Smile Day was held in Worcester, Massachusetts in 1999. According to Ball,
“the smiley face knows no politics, no geography and no religion . . . for at least one day each year, neither should we.”
World Smile Day’s slogan “Do an act of kindness. Help one person smile!” is one of the best sayings anyone could chose to live by.
If you’re looking for a reason to perform an act of kindness with a smile on your face, today is the perfect day to get your Smile On!
Michael J. White writes for a website titled Well Street. On September 25th, he wrote a great article about World Smile Day. He has a Top 10 list of things to do to produce a genuine smile:
Top 10 suggestions for creating a huge genuine smile:1. Start your day off with a big smile. Before you get out of bed, put on a hearty smile!2. Before you “dress for success”, smile for success!3. Practice smiling in the mirror. Include your eyes. They should reinforce the smile. Play some happy music in the background, e.g. “When Irish Eyes are Smiling” or “Don’t Worry, Be Happy”.4. “Dance like no one’s watching!” That’s sure to bring a smile to your face!5. Say or read words that elicit a smile, such as: “Smile!” “Cheese!” or “Paparazzi!”6. Remind yourself throughout the day to wear a smile.7. Take a “Smile Walk”. Walk around and extend a smile to people you meet. It can be done at home, at work, in a store or restaurant, at your place of worship or even on the sidewalk. If you need help with this, pretend that you are a celebrity. Imagine that people are looking at you to see if you are friendly or not. Extend a warm smile to your fans!8. Make the effort to look a friend or loved one in the eye and give a heart-felt smile.9. Make a conscious effort to smile while talking with people.10. Have a photo taken of you sporting the perfect smile and post this photo on your social media sites.
