Clay Aiken – Happy, But Very Tired

On May 26, 2003,  Clay Aiken and Ruben Studdard made their first visit to The Today Show.  Talking with Katie Couric, both singers seemed happy, but very tired.  Clay told Katie that he didn’t even know what day it was as they had been busy since the end of American Idol.

During his interview with Katie, Clay talked about:

  • 130,000 vote difference
  • Seeing Ryan’s card and the “long name” on it
  • The whirlwind press since American Idol
  • The Idol judges and his thoughts and feelings about them
  • Clay’s past as a teacher in Special Education
  • Meeting with Clive Davis and Clay’s new record contract

While discussing some of the possible songs for his new album, Katie asked Clay to sing a bit of Solitaire.  Of course, even with no sleep, Clay sounded wonderful.  Katie also mentioned that her 7-year-old daughter was an original Claymate.

The weather was horrible as a rainstorm hit New York, but there was a huge crowd in the Plaza to see the Clay and Ruben.  Fortunately, they were under a tent to perform.  Because it was Memorial Day Week-end, their song choice was “God Bless The USA.”

There are lots of pictures of this performance and a great video.  Enjoy!!

Monday is a good day to read something that just might make you chuckle.  Everybody needs a day like that!

I found the following on a data disc of Clay Aiken articles that I saved.  I wish I knew more about it.  I am not sure when it was written or who wrote it.  If anyone does know, please let me know.  I would love to give credit where it is due.

Clay Aiken has appeared on the Tonight Show many times.  On May 11, 2004, Clay was a guest on The Tonight Show.  As a part of May Sweeps, the Show was broadcast from Las Vegas.  Clay chatted with Jay and they discussed:

1.  Clay’s New Years’ Eve costume.

2.  The story of being a car thief.

3.  How Clay wanted to be like Mr. Rogers

4. The latest story in In Touch Magazine about Clay being the loneliest Guy in LA.

The highlight of the evening was hearing Clay perform Solitaire.  He always seems to sing that song from his heart.

I hope we see Clay on The Tonight Show again soon!!

Clay Aiken – Solitaire’s The Only Game In Town!

Solitaire’s the only game in town

And Every road that takes him, takes him down

And by himself, it’s easy to pretend

He’ll never love again

There are times in a person’s career that become obvious benchmark events.  Some of these events are built up to be career changing, but some just happen.  Most people believe that March 17, 2004 was a defining moment in the career of Clay Aiken.

Season 3 of American Idol was in full swing.  The final group of 12 contestants had performed on the first elimination show one night before.  Each singer had tried to impress America by singing a song for “Soul Night.”

But March 17th was Results Night and American Idol had invited Clay Aiken, the runner up of Season 2, as their special musical guest.

According to reports at the time, there were many fans that arrived very early in the morning for the 5pm taping.  A reporter from KIIS FM came by the line at about 9am to do a man-on-the-street interview with the line-sitters.  Someone had called Rick Dees for an on-air contest and they were intrigued that there were so many people lined up so early.  They wanted to know what AI3 finalist the people were there to see.  They were completely shocked to learn that most of the fans were there for Clay.

At about the halfway mark of the show, Ryan Seacrest announced Clay.  He strode onto the stage in a commanding way.  He was wearing a black turtleneck and a suit.  Instead of standing in front of the judges table, Clay chose to perform at the side of the stage.  Clay chose to sing Solitaire as it was being pushed as his new single.

The audience in the studio and watching at home were treated to a wonderful performance.  Not only did Clay sing well, he was able to connect with the audience with his eye contact and emotional lyrics.  And I doubt anyone will forget the surreal “glory note.”

It was reported that Debra Byrd was monitoring the show on a TV screen at the front of the audience.  As Clay was singing, she smiled widely and seemed very proud.  Fred Bronson and Julia DeMato were both a part of the audience that night.

All three of the regular judges were there.  One fan reported: “During Clay’s song, all three judges seemed to not be paying any attention whatsoever.  They were talking among themselves.  There was not one minute of interaction between Clay and those judges the entire time Clay was on the stage – not before, during, or after the song.”

After his performance, Clay chatted a bit with Ryan Seacrest.  Clay said he got a little nervous being in the studio again.  He also said that the tour with Kelly Clarkson was going well.  Ryan made sure that the audience knew that Clay’s album had gone triple platinum.

The contestants had a chance to ask Clay some questions.  The audience laughed when Matt said he was having nightmares about Simon and wanted to know how Clay dealt with that.  His response was to focus on the goal and to not let anything get in the way.  He also commented that fame is hard when Fantasia asked him if people treated him differently.

At the commercial break, Clay went over to where the contestants were sitting and shook hands and hugged every one of them.  Someone from the audience threw up some panties and also a bear for him.  It was reported that Clay calmly picked up the panties and casually threw them over to Simon.

“My impression of the whole experience was that Clay is the real superstar here – he is just so far beyond American Idol,” reported a fan that was a part of the live audience that night.

It was certainly a night to remember and the entire audience was on their feet and applauding loudly for Clay Aiken, the new pop star.

The talented SueReu published a new video of Clay singing Solitaire.  She combined footage of Clay’s show stopping performance on American Idol and footage from the February 10th, 2011 Tried and True Tour.  In Florida, Clay sang Solitaire and again, the performance was breathtaking.  It is interesting to note that Clay sang the difficult song in the same key and his voice soared just as it did in 2004.  In fact, for many listeners, the only difference was the more mature sense of passion that Clay sang in Miami.

Thank you to SueReu for this amazing video and, of course, a huge thank-you to Clay Aiken for continuing to present quality performances to his audiences…It just keeps getting better!

The ballad, “Solitaire“, was written by Neil Sedaka in 1971.   Neil took the melancholy lyrics of Phil Cody and wrote one of the most beautiful pop songs ever recorded.  The lyrics employ playing the card game of solitaire as a metaphor for a man “who lost his love through his indifference” – “while life goes on around him everywhere he’s playing solitaire”.

Clay Aiken – Celebrating Classical Music Month

By musicfan123 · Comments 10020(4)http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F2010%2F09%2F14%2Fclay-aiken-celebrating-classical-music-month%2FClay+Aiken+-+Celebrating+Classical+Music+Month2010-09-14+07%3A54%3A11musicfan123http%3A%2F%2Fwww.claynewsnetwork.com%2F%3Fp%3D10020
Tuesday, September 14th, 2010

It seems September is a month full of many special days and is dedicated to many causes.  Can you believe it is “Balance Awareness Week”, “Self-Promotion Month”, and September even has “Fish Amnesty Day.”?  For those of us on a Clay Aiken blog, the important cause is:

Classical Music Month

Many of us enjoy classical music, but when asked by someone, “What is classical music?” we are unable to provide a solid statement about this genre that encompasses many styles of music and spans more than seven hundred years.

The following are some definitions of and comments about Classical Music:

  • Of or relating to music in the educated European tradition as opposed to popular or folk music.
  • Orchestral and chamber music, etc, as opposed to jazz, folk music, etc.
  • Music of the European tradition marked by sophistication of structural elements…
  • Classical Music is the joy of being involved with something larger than you are.
  • The best thing about being a musician is carrying around works of art in your head all the time.
  • Lovers of classical music speak of it as a refuge from the stress of everyday life, a sanctuary of timeless treasures.
  • The musician, A. Ansbacher said:  Classical music for me is simply a thing of beauty…that everybody should have the opportunity to enjoy.

Whatever your favorite genre of music might be it is wonderful that the month of September celebrates music.  Having grown up in a home where classical music was all I ever heard, I love listening to Brahms, Mahler, Mozart and many other great composers. Yet, when I heard Clay Aiken sing the first time, my heart soared and life was just a little bit better than the day before.

Do you ever listen to Classical Music?  If so, do you have a favorite composer or composition?

The following video is “Classic Clay”

Clay Aiken Honors Neil Sedaka

By musicfan123 · Comments 5555(12)http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F2009%2F07%2F18%2Fclay-aiken-honors-neil-sedaka%2FClay+Aiken+Honors+Neil+Sedaka2009-07-18+07%3A06%3A51musicfan123http%3A%2F%2Fwww.claynewsnetwork.com%2F%3Fp%3D5555
Saturday, July 18th, 2009

The Songwriters Hall of Fame was founded in 1969 by songwriter Johnny Mercer and music publishers Abe Olman and Howie Richmond.  One of the goals of the organization was to create a museum, but because of a lack of funds, the museum is an on-line virtual museum.  The headquarters of the organization is in New York City.  The SHOF holds workshops and provides scholarships to young artists and showcases their songwriting talent.

Each year, the SHOF puts on an Awards show where new inductees are voted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.  To date there have been 345 individuals inducted into the SHOF.  The only bands to ever be inducted into the hall of fame are the British rock band Queen and the American bands, Crosby, Stills & Nash and Bob Jovi.

On July 18, 2004, Neil Sedaka was the recipient of the prestigious Sammy Cahn Lifetime Achievement Award. At the time of the award program,  Sedaka’s song, “Solitaire,” recorded by Clay Aiken, was the #1 selling single in the U.S. for the seventh consecutive week.   According to the Songwriter Hall of Fame website,

“The Sammy Cahn Lifetime Achievement Award honors an industry veteran who is acknowledged as a pioneer in his/her craft, whose body of work over time has been substantial, enduring and influential, and whose success and contributions over a lifetime have inspired the music community. Past awardees include Patti LaBelle, Dick Clark, Gloria and Emilio Estefan, Neil Diamond, Berry Gordy, Tony Bennett, Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme, Nat King Cole and Quincy Jones.”

The awards ceremony was televised on Bravo in 2004 and Clay Aiken made a short, taped appearance on the show.  He spoke of meeting Neil and how excited he was.  Clay also said that his mother had a “schoolgirl crush” on Neil and could name most of his hits.  Clay spoke with respect and congratulated Neil on receiving such a prestigious award.

This year, the Songwriters Hall of Fame (SHOF) celebrated 40 years of recognizing the work and lives of enduring composers and lyricists who create popular music around the world.  The 2009 Songwriters Hall of Fame Awards inductees were Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora; Felix Cavaliere and Eddie Brigati (The Young Rascals ); Roger Cook and Roger Greenaway; Crosby, Stills & Nash; Galt MacDermot, James Rado and Gerome Ragni (deceased); and Stephen Schwartz. The induction and awards dinner was held on  June 18 at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York City.

Clay’s part of the broadcast was rather short, but we have a clip of his spoken tribute to Neil Sedaka.

Quote of the Day

It is not always about performance art, but about receiving positive energy from people with positive spirits. Sometimes we can see someone's spirit, and those are the people with great energy. Those are the people that get me through the day, especially on Broadway. -Clay Aiken
