Clay Aiken – Summer Traditions

By musicfan123 · Comments 11348(5)http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F2011%2F08%2F09%2Fclay-aiken-summer-traditions%2FClay+Aiken+-+Summer+Traditions2011-08-09+08%3A20%3A56musicfan123http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F%3Fp%3D11348

One of the traditions of summer in New York is the summer concerts that are sponsored by the morning news shows.  Both the Today Show and Good Morning America ask oustanding artists to be a part of their popular concert series.  The crowds are huge and the artists have the opportunity to perform both a live audience and a built- in TV audience.

Clay Aiken has participated in many of the Summer Concerts.  I think my favorite was on July 29th, 2005.  As part of the Summer Concert Series sponsored by Good Morning America, the concert was held in Bryant Park.  The crowd was very excited and huge!!  The night before, Clay had opened the JukeBox Tour in Tom’s River, New Jersey.  He claimed to have only about 2 hours of sleep before the his appearance at Bryant Park.

Clay performed three songs on the program; Invisible, Suspicious Minds, and Back For More.  The fans who were there in person said that he also sang Twisting The Night Away in the warm-up….and Clay actually did the TWIST!!  During the show, when Clay sang Invisible, the audience sang along.  It really looked like Clay enjoyed it and he smiled a lot!!

Besides the concert, Clay was interviewed by Diane Sawyer.  They talked about Clay trips for UNICEF and his move back to Raleigh. Diane asked, “What do you know about do-wop, anyway?” Answer: “Not much, but it’s good stuff.”

Clay had a lot of fun with the audience.   Someone in the audience asked about Clay’s shoe..”We want to see your shoe.” So…Clay took off his shoe and showed it to the audience.

The following review was posted at the ABC Website:

Aiken’s loyal fans got a real treat this morning when he debuted a new song called “Coming Back for More” and performed Elvis Presley’s “Suspicious Minds” at New York City’s Bryant Park as part of “Good Morning America’s” Summer Concert Series.

The 26-year-old began his Jukebox Summer Tour 2005 on Thursday in Tom’s River, N.J. Aiken will visit 25 cities and sing covers of more than 70 songs from five decades of rock ‘n’ roll on the tour, his fifth in the past two years. The tour will finish Sept. 1.

In addition to performing, his work as a UNICEF ambassador has been keeping him busy.

“It’s the closest thing I can do now to being in a classroom and teaching,” said Aiken, who studied special education at UNC-Charlotte. He recently returned from northern Uganda, where he visited “night commuters” — children who must leave their homes in the countryside every night to sleep in UNICEF shelters to avoid being abducted by a rebel group. In March, Aiken visited children living in camps for tsunami survivors in Aceh, Indonesia.

Aiken said he has decided to leave Los Angeles and return to his hometown of Raleigh, N.C. “I like L.A., I like California, but there’s a different energy there,” he said.

In June 2003, Aiken made history when his debut single, “This is the Night” went to No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart, selling more than 392,000 copies in its first week and beating Elton John’s 1997 record for “Candle in the Wind.” In October 2003, he released his first album, “Measure of a Man.” His second, “Merry Christmas with Love,” came out last November.

Despite his success in the music industry, Aiken hasn’t forgotten his first passion: helping children with disabilities. Shortly after “American Idol” ended, he created the Bubel/Aiken Foundation, named after an autistic boy he took care of while he was at UNC-Charlotte. The foundation provides grants, services and inclusive programs for children with special needs and their typical peers.

Do you think we will see Clay perform on a Summer Concert Series again?  Did any of you get to see any of the concerts live?  Be sure and check out the great video that is at the bottom of this post.  what agreat performance!!

Clay Aiken – Jukebox or Tried and True?

“Suspicious Minds” is a song written in 1968 by Mark James (aka Francis Zambon). Performed by Elvis Presley in 1969, it became one of his most notable hits. Suspicious Minds was widely regarded as the single that jump-started Presley’s career after his successful 1968 Comeback Special. It was Presley’s last number-one single in the United States.  On their list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time, Rolling Stone has Suspicious Minds ranked at #91.

Elvis first performed  Suspicious Minds at the Las Vegas Hilton in July of 1969.  The single was released in the fall. It reached number one in the United States in the week of November 1st.  This song was Presley’s final number-one single in the U.S. before his death.

Clay Aiken first performed Suspicious Minds as a part of his Jukebox Tour in the summer of 2005.  On July 29th, Clay performed the song on Good Morning America’s Summer Concert Series. The performance received a great response from the audience and the chatter on all the Clay Boards was full of excitement.

Flash-forward to 2010 and Clay Aiken’s newest CD, Tried and True….  Suspicious Minds is one of the most popular songs on this album of classics.

Although the song is the same, the arrangements of both performances are somewhat different.  It is interesting to hear the differences.

There are two performances below.  The first is Clay’s performance at GMA and the second is from the taping of the Tried and True PBS special.  Which performance is your favorite?

Clay Aiken – Headed To Lancaster

By musicfan123 · Comments 9974(3)http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F2010%2F08%2F05%2Fclay-aiken-headed-to-lancaster%2FClay+Aiken+-+Headed+To+Lancaster2010-08-05+21%3A52%3A02musicfan123http%3A%2F%2Fwww.claynewsnetwork.com%2F%3Fp%3D9974

Jon Ferguson is a staff writer for the Intelligencer Journal/Lancaster New Era in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.  On August 5th, Mr. Ferguson published a nice article about Clay Aiken and the Timeless Tour.  The American Music Theatre in Lancaster will be hosting the concert on Sunday, August 8th, 2010.

Once ‘Idols,’ now friends

Clay Aiken, Ruben Studdard join forces for tour

Seven years after squaring off against each other on the second season of “American Idol,” Clay Aiken and Ruben Studdard are again sharing the same stage.

The two singers will bring their “Timeless” tour to the American Music Theatre Sunday night.

It’s the first time they’ve toured together and Aiken says they’ll be performing songs from the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. He says they have an 85-song set list to choose from.

“If people name two or three big songs from any one of those decades, chances are we’re doing at least one of them,” Aiken says from his tour bus while it travels through Wisconsin.

Aiken, 31, says he and Studdard, who won the “American Idol” competition that year, share the stage about 85 percent of the time during the show and do a lot of singing together.

“Occasionally, we’ll take a break and let the other person sing a solo song so the other person can rest or wipe the sweat off his face,” Aiken says.

The North Carolina native says he hasn’t watched “American Idol” for the past five years, though he and Studdard remain friends and have always stayed in touch.

“Ruben and I have talked for several years actually about wanting to do something together,” he says. “We hadn’t performed together or sung together since we were on ‘Idol.’ It was something that we talked about wanting to do and kept putting it off because of his obligations, my obligations or just pure laziness. Finally, we decided to stop talking about it and just do it.”

Though Studdard topped Aiken on “American Idol,” Aiken has enjoyed more commercial success during their post–”Idol” careers.

Buoyed by enthusiastic fans called Claymates, Aiken’s debut album, “Measure of a Man” (2003), went on to sell almost three millions copies.

He released a Christmas album the following year that sold over a million copies.

However, he hasn’t been able to sustain those numbers and his 2008 album, “On My Way Here,” sold about 150,000 copies.

His latest album, “Tried and True,” was released in June and features popular songs like “Crying,” “Moon River,” “Misty,” “Unchained Melody” (which he sang on “Idol”) and “Suspicious Minds.”

“These are songs that are so wonderfully written — great standards, almost — that it was easy for me to settle in with them,” he says. “I’ve heard them my whole life.”

Except for “Suspicious Minds,” Aiken says he won’t be singing songs from the album during his tour with Studdard. He says they agreed not to use the tour as an opportunity to promote their solo albums. (Studdard’s fourth album, “Love Is,” produced by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, was released in May 2009.)

Aiken says he will tour behind the album in the winter.

During his career, Aiken had been dogged by questions about his sexuality. Rumors persisted that he was gay, though Aiken for years denied it.

In 2008, Aiken disclosed in an interview with People magazine that he is gay.

“I think it’s probably been relatively neutral,” Aiken says when asked how the disclosure has affected his career. “Obviously, there were some people who weren’t thrilled with it. But, at the same time, it allows me to be more comfortable with myself and be more open. It makes it easier to perform and I think people see that and gravitate toward it.”

Clay Aiken – The Singer Becomes The Instrument

Wednesday, May 19th, 2010

On Tuesday I spent more time than I should, listening to Clay Aiken sing.  I started with Misty, clicked on Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You and pulled out On My Way Here and listened to Something About Us.  When we got the news that we could get a MP3 of Suspicious Minds, I downloaded it immediately and listened to it more times than I could count.

What this did was make me hunt for some answers.  What is Music?  Why am I so touched?  Why do I feel better after listening?

First, I looked at some short answers:

Music is what life sounds like.  ~Eric Olson

Music washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.  ~Berthold Auerbach

He who sings scares away his woes.  ~Cervantes

In music the passions enjoy themselves.  ~Nietzsche, Beyond Good and Evil, 1886

Very nice, but when I found an article by the world-renowned singer, Annie Lennox, I had to read it all.  The following is a part of her article from 2008.  If you want to read then entire article, you can find it at RESURGENCE

What is music?  Music is pure magic.  It is a wonderful gift to humanity.  Music moves us, and soothes us.  It stimulates.  It makes us want to dance or sing.  It makes us feel happy or sad, inspired or uplifted.  It affects our mood in all kinds of infinite ways.  It can be exquisitely subtle or wildly raucous: from lullaby, to a war cry for revolution.

EVER SINCE I can remember, music has been an accompaniment to my life. It would be impossible for me to even try and conceptualize a world without music. If you have a natural aptitude and appreciation for it, then music simply draws you to it and connects. Watch a baby nodding her head, clapping her hands, or bouncing in response to a rhythm or melody…….

Songs in particular contain something profoundly elemental. The singer actually ‘becomes’ the instrument, or vehicle of communication and expression. Through the combination of voice, lyrical content and poetic structure, melody, rhythm, the nuance of combined tonal qualities and phrasing within the breath, singers can transmit and translate thoughts and feelings, potentially elevating and transporting both the singer and the listener to another realm. Music really can lead us into another dimension.

Music also tells stories, breaks hearts, reduces us to tears, or seduces us into falling in love, over and over and over again. Music is a universal language. A human creation from a divine source… perhaps.

Music is a mystery, a code. A vehicle of spirit and soul. It is perceived through ‘hearing’ the vibration of sound, the most sublime resonance – from the eardrum to the brain. Music moves us beyond intellect to the heart-centre…….

Did Annie realize she was writing about Clay Aiken when she wrote the bolded words?  Whatever, or whoever she was writing about really doesn’t matter.  I just realize that we are so lucky to be able to lose ourselves in the stunning voice that belongs to Clay Aiken.

Good Morning, Clay Aiken

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009

Clay Aiken’s loyal fans got a real treat on July 29th, 2005 when he debuted a new song called ” Back for More” and performed Elvis Presley’s “Suspicious Minds” at New York City’s Bryant Park as part of “Good Morning America’s” Summer Concert Series.

Clay had just begun his Jukebox Summer Tour the evening before in Toms River, N.J.  The tour visited 25 cities.  It was Clay’s fifth tour in the past two years.

Throughout the Good Morning America broadcast on the 29th, the anchors mentioned their excitement that Clay was back to give another wonderful concert.  The weatherman was stationed at the park and each time he gave a weather report, he included the huge crowd in the shots.

Diane Sawyer interviewed Clay at the beginning of the concert and asked him about his UNICEF trips.  “It’s the closest thing I can do now to being in a classroom and teaching,” said Aiken. He recently had returned from northern Uganda, where he visited “night commuters” — children who must leave their homes in the countryside every night to sleep in UNICEF shelters to avoid being abducted by a rebel group. In March, Clay had visited children living in camps for tsunami survivors in Aceh, Indonesia.

Clay was also asked “What do you know about do-wop anyway.”  Clay answered, “Not much, but it’s good stuff!”

The concert itself, was brilliant.  Clay chose the Elvis song “Suspicious Minds” to open the concert.  It is a great Elvis song that isn’t so popular that it would make people think Clay was trying to impersonate Elvis.  Clay sang it beautifully and it had a great contemporary sound to it.

Next, Clay sang “Back For More”.  This new song was supposed to be on Clay’s sophomore album before the label changed their minds.  The catchy song was an immediate hit.  Most of Clay’s fans loved the irony of the lyrics:  “its all over the radio.”

From the fans at Bryant Park, we learned that Clay also performed “Twisting The Night Away.”  The reports said that Clay sounded relaxed and assured and did his twist “thing”.  Too bad it wasn’t televised.

There was a twist at Bryant Park that morning.  Clay was also interviewed by “Erica Kane”, from All My Children.  Susan Lucci who plays Erica on the show explained that her character was starting a TV show and that Clay was her first interview.  Just another thing to fit into Clay’s very busy day!!

Bryant Park was filled with the audience for Clay and overall, Clay seemed happy, confident and in control.  It was a great success.

Thank goodness for CLACK!!  Because of the following videos, we can all re-live the Good Morning America again!!

Quote of the Day

It is not always about performance art, but about receiving positive energy from people with positive spirits. Sometimes we can see someone's spirit, and those are the people with great energy. Those are the people that get me through the day, especially on Broadway. -Clay Aiken
