Republican Rep. Renee Ellmers and Clay Aiken, her Democratic challenger for North Carolina’s 2nd District congressional race were certainly feisty in their first and only debate Monday, riffing off both current events as well as well-honed one-liners from early in President Barack Obama’s presidency.
Ellmers is a two-term incumbent and former nurse. Aiken is a first-time candidate best known for his run on American Idol.
For those watching the exchanges who might need some more background or a quick fact check, here are notes on some of the more contentious, strange and strained exchanges…

I couldn't be more proud of Clay. I knew he would nail it, and he did. I also always thought Renee was arrogant and she was. I do think she had more speaking time than Clay. When he tried to speak at one time she yelled "I am speaking".!!! Wow. Anyway, he did wonderful!!

I was nervous and on the edge of my seat at the beginning, but after watching Clay in action I was still glued but relaxed! Smellmers seemed to be in that "entertainer" mode while "dancing" as fast as she could around the issues (or should I say slow because her droning on and on was quite annoying). Clay was clear on the issues while she couldn't seem to answer with a yes or no. I thought she was a train wreck! He HAS this!! I hope she's at the next debate. After last night Clay may be talking to an empty seat!.
I did watch the debate last evening. I was very impressed with Clay, his answers to the questions. He was precise, at each point. Ellmers rambled on and on for her questions, kind of dancing around the answers…. Not giving definite answers. I did not like the way she talked down to Clay, because of him being an entertainer…like he had no concept of the political arena.. Very condencending. I do not like Ellmers. She is not working for the best interests of the people of NC02. I hope the people in that district realize that, and vote Clay in. She just reminds me of a blonde Palin. No substance, just loud and obnoxious.
I watched the debate and I was also nervous and glued to my seat watching Clay and Renee, it got quite intense there for a while but Clay stood his ground, I'm so proud of him, he did a great job, way to go Clay! We all love you from Canada and wish you the victory you deserve!

Thought it was interesting that she referred to Clay as just an entertainer. Does Elmers f that when she first ran she was just a nurse. Speaking of entertainers, did it ever occur to her that one of the most respected Presidents of our time was also an entertainer i.e. Ronald Reagan
Martha, luckily I was able to get the WRAL streaming of the debate so it was just like watching it on TV. I think Clay did exceptionally well and Ellmers was talking in circles, not having a clue what she was trying to talk about. Clay said the new path he was following was more important and as much as I hate to lose him as a singer (I won't use the word "entertainer" because Renee made it seem an insult), I have ti agree with him. Government needs more people like him.. That woman should just go back to her nursing or managing her hubby's practice as it appears she is a dead weight in congress. I'd give anything to have a man like Clay running for office here. Thanks for the good coverage.

clay was amazing at the debate i think he hit a home run but elmers olmg she new nothing or anything i dont like her and clay had such integraty you go clay with clay in the debate it was just amazing hes intelagent
