Clay Aiken… Dick Clark – “America’s Oldest Teenager”

By musicfan123 · Comments 15754(8)http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F2012%2F04%2F19%2Fclay-aiken-dick-clark-americas-oldest-teenager%2FClay+Aiken...+Dick+Clark+-+%22America%27s+Oldest+Teenager%222012-04-19+07%3A26%3A29musicfan123http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F%3Fp%3D15754
Thursday, April 19th, 2012

Dick Clark, the man who introduced rock ‘n’ roll to America, died Wednesday morning of a heart attack. Clark was best known as the host of the show American Bandstand, on which he appeared for 31 years.  He was 82.

CBS News wrote about Clark through its Celebrity Circuit blog.  They said:

Long dubbed “the world’s oldest teenager” because of his boyish appearance, Clark bridged the rebellious new music scene and traditional show business, and was equally comfortable whether chatting about music with Sam Cooke or bantering with Ed McMahon about TV bloopers. He thrived as the founder of Dick Clark Productions, supplying movies, game and music shows, beauty contests and more to TV. Among his credits: “The $25,000 Pyramid,” “TV’s Bloopers and Practical Jokes” and the American Music Awards.

For a time in the 1980s, he had shows on all three networks and was listed among the Forbes 400 of wealthiest Americans. Clark also was part of radio as partner in the United Stations Radio Networks, which provided programs – including Clark’s – to thousands of stations.

Dick Clark may be better known to a younger generation as the host of Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve, which began in 1972.

In 1974, at ABC’s request, Clark created the American Music Awards after the network lost the broadcast rights to the Grammy Awards. The American Music Awards have nominations based on sales, airplay, activity on social networks, and video viewing. For the last five years, the winners are determined by online voting.

Clay Aiken and Ruben Studdard had the opportunity to work with Clark in 2003.  Clay and Ruben performed at the American Music Awards, singing for the first time in front of their peers.  The day before the broadcast of the AMA’s, Dick Clark was a guest on the Howard Stern show.  Clark mentioned some of the guests that would be on the show, including Clay and Ruben.  Howard asked about Clay Aiken and Ruben Studdard. Dick said:

“Yes, this number they do together…well, they each sing one song by themselves then they do a number together. I was at rehearsal, and I gotta tell, you it is something special. I feel quite confident that they will receive a standing ovation. All the hairs on the back of my neck stood up.”

Clark was certainly right.  Clay and Ruben did get a standing ovation and everyone was talking about the 17 – second note that Clay held during the duet of Jesus Is Love.  And, to top off a great night, Clay won the Fan’s Choice Award.

I will never tire of watching Clay and Ruben on the 2003 American Music Awards.  It is a night to remember.

Dick Clark - May You Rest In Peace

How disappointing that ABC chose to not broadcast the singing of the National Anthem at the Grand Prix race this morning.  Of course, I am disappointed because I wanted to hear Clay sing, however, I am also disappointed that they would leave out a patriotic moment that most people expect at sports events.

Fortunately, twitter is our friend and we have some great pictures from Clay’s visit to the race.

Clay Aiken – Are You Ready?

Sunday, March 25th, 2012

Today is Sunday and fans of Clay Aiken have the opportunity to see Clay on TV two different times.  Be sure and jump on ABC to see Clay sing the National Anthem at the Honda Grand Prix in downtown St. Petersburg.  The race starts at 12:30PM, Eastern time… but be sure and tune in early in hopes of hearing Clay.  At my home, the show starts at 9:30AM.  Be sure and check your TV Guide.

And, don’t forget about watching Celebrity Apprentice on NBC at 9PM.  I can’t wait to see Clay and the men hosting a beach party in the middle of Manhattan.  Who will be “fired” this week?

Add another interview to your Clay Aiken calendar.  It was announced on Saturday that Clay would be a guest on the show,  Just Jenny.  His interview is scheduled for Monday, March 26th at 1pm.

Just Jenny is a show on SIRIUS/XM STARS channel 107.  It is broadcast on Monday through Friday at 1pm Eastern Time.

The star of this show is Jennifer Hutt, a graduate of Tufts University and Hofstra University Law School.  She is a mother of two children and lives in Long Island.

Jennifer is no stranger to the entertainment field.  Her father, Charles Koppelman, was a well-known music producer who worked with many popular musicians, including Dolly Parton, Paul Anka, and Barbra Streisand.  Her brother is a screenwriter, director and producer.

According to her Internet site, Jennifer has an:

…ease in front of a microphone or camera, but her approachable “everywoman” style explains her appeal:  Jennifer connects with her audience, especially women, in a way few media personalities can.  Additionally Jennifer is a contributor to CNN’s stream team…

I am looking forward to hearing Clay and Jennifer chat.  It sounds like fun.

Saturday evening, Aubrey O’Day tweeted a great picture of Clay and herself with the Andretti Family.  It seems the two singers flew into Florida to get ready for their appearance at the race.  Michael Andretti was one of the apprentices and was “fired” by Donald Trump two weeks ago.  It looks like the group was having a good time and enjoying a bit of downtime.

Have a great Sunday!!  I am already excited!!

I look forward to hearing what you think of Clay’s adventures on TV today!!

Clay Aiken – Juggling Decisions!

Sunday, February 26th, 2012

Today is Sunday, February 26th and for most people in the United States, it is a huge night on television.  Tonight, ABC will be broadcasting The Academy Awards.  Known as the Oscars, these awards celebrate the best of the movie industry.

But…wait…for fans of Clay Aiken, the night demands some juggling, DVR’s and unfair decisions.  What Clay fan would choose the Oscars over the second episode of Celebrity Apprentice?

All kidding aside, the 84th Academy Awards ceremony will be held tonight at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood at 5:30pm PST.

One of the most interesting categories of the night is usually the award for the Best Original Song.  It is presented to the songwriter who has composed a song written for a specific movie.  Unfortunately, the artist who performs the song is not credited unless they contributed either some lyrics or music.

2011 was not a great year for original songs in movies. In fact, some say it might be the worst year in the eighty-four year history of the Academy Awards.

Only two songs were nominated this year in the “Best Song” category - ”Man or Muppet” from The Muppets and ”Real in Rio” from Rio.  Besides the lack of nominees, the two songs being honored might be cute but are not particularly catchy, poignant, or memorable.

Below are some of the classic winners from previous years. These songs are not only identify with the movies in which they were featured, they are often representative of an era.

Some of the most memorable songs came from the 30s and 40s:

  • Thanks For The Memories (1938)
  • Somewhere Over The Rainbow (1939)
  • When You Wish Upon A Star (1940)
  • White Christmas (1942)

Among the “Best Song” winners from the 70s:

  • Theme from Shaft (1971)
  • The Way We Were (1974)
  • Last Dance (1978)

Winners from the 80s include:

  • Flashdance (1983)
  • I Just Called to Say I Love You (1984)
  • I’ve Had The Time of My Life (1987)

In the 90s, there was an impressive string of Disney winners (songs from Beauty and Beast, Aladdin, Lion King, Pocohantas).  There were also popular hits like:

  • Streets of Philadelphia (1993)
  • You Must Love Me (1996)
  • My Heart Will Go On (1997)

Can you name any Best Song winners in the 2000?  I can recall only the fun song, “Jai Ho” from Slumdog and Eminem’s “Lose Yourself.”

This is the first year that none of the nominated songs will be performed during the awards broadcast.  This is too bad as  music is such an important part of any movie.

Looking back at the songs listed here, I can’t help but wish I could hear Clay sing these great songs.  There are a few that he has recorded or performed in concert, but I would love to hear some of the others too.  AND…. maybe some year soon, we will hear Clay singing a nominated song at the Academy Awards Show.

Are you watching the Academy Awards Tonight or will you DVR it so you can watch Celebrity Apprentice?  In California, the Oscars start at 5:30pm.  I might get to see both shows when they are broadcast!

Clay Aiken – One Of My Favorites!

The ABC show, Good Morning America has always opened their doors to Clay Aiken.  He has visited the show many times.  Sometimes he performs and other times he talks about his music, his career and the many projects that he supports.

On December 25th, 2005, Clay Aiken sang a moving rendition of David Fosters Grown Up Christmas List.  Clay had performed a few days earlier for a live performance on GMA and took a few minutes to record this beautiful song so it could be broadcast on Christmas Day.  This particular performance is one of my favorites.  It isn’t because it is perfect, or that Clay looked great, or that I am in the holiday mood.  I think it’s because the performance is understated and shows that Clay is singing from his heart.  I know that I have posted Grown Up Christmas List on this blog before, but this is right there at the top.  I hope you think so too!!

Clay Aiken – On Stage Three Times!

The  2010 American Music Awards were broadcast live on ABC Sunday evening,  The program was full of epic stage productions.

Justin Bieber was the big winner of the night.  The 16-year-old pop star came away with the awards for breakthrough artist, pop/rock artist and artist of the year. He was the youngest performer in the history of the AMAs to win artist of the year. Bieber also performed during the broadcast, accompanying himself on the piano.

The American Music Awards, known as the AMAs, are given to top performers throughout the music industry on an annual basis. Awards are given in the Pop/Rock, Country, Rap/Hip-Hop, Soul/R&B, Alternative, Adult Contemporary, Latin, Soundtracks and Contemporary Inspirational genres of music. In addition to the awards in each of the genres, an Artist of the Year is named from all groups combined.

The awards are voted on by fans but the nominees are chosen by their presence on Big Champagne’s Ultimate Chart. Artists are ranked on the chart as a result of their music sales combined with their presence on the radio and television, Internet streaming, and their involvement with the public through social media.  In 2007, Dick Clark Productions, who leads the event, moved to a fan based voting system which is conducted through online voting through the ABC website.

Dick Clark started the American Music Awards in 1973.  Michael Jackson co-hosted the first event with Donny Osmond. Roberta Flack won the first award given in 1973.

Clay Aiken has attended and participated in the AMA’s three times.  On November 16, 2003, Clay played a large role in the show.  He arrived on the Red Carpet with his friend Amber Nix and was nominated for two awards, Favorite Male Artist and Fan Choice.  Clay won the Fan Choice Award.  Clay also performed on the program.  Clay sang a short version of Invisible and was then joined by Ruben Studdard for an outstanding rendition of Jesus Is Love.  They received a standing ovation.

On November 11, 2004. Clay was a presenter on the program.  He was joined on stage by Kathy Griffin who was dressed as a bride.  She announced to the audience that she was going to marry Clay.  Despite the distraction, Clay was able to present the award for the Best Male Country Artist.

Clay hit the Red Carpet one more time at the AMA’s.  In 2006, Clay participated in a skit with Tori Spelling.  The two made fun of Clay’s tiff with Kelly Ripa and received lots of laughs and applause.

I have to admit that the only times I have watched the show are the three times that Clay Aiken was a part of the show.  I am not a huge fan of popular music and so the shows are just not my cup of tea!

The following video is fun.  Clay was amazing when he sang at the AMA’s.

Clay Aiken has been a frequent visitor to Good Morning America.  The show combines morning news and talk and is broadcast on the ABC television network.  The week-day program airs for two hours each morning.  The show started in 1975 and has a long and exciting history of wonderful interviews and great musical guests.

GMA broadcasts from Times Square, New York and often, they will travel a few blocks to Bryant Park to present their musical concerts.

On July 2, 2004, Clay performed as a part of GMA’s Summer Concert Series.  He talked briefly with Diane Sawyer and then sang 3 songs.  His mother, Faye Parker was called up on the stage to be introduced to the audience.  The crowd was reported to be the largest audience for the GMA Concert Series.

It will be wonderful when Clay has another opportunity to perform on GMA.  The next few weeks would be a great time to see Clay there.

SueReu put together some videos of the 2004 Clay concert.  They are really fun to see.

Quote of the Day

It is not always about performance art, but about receiving positive energy from people with positive spirits. Sometimes we can see someone's spirit, and those are the people with great energy. Those are the people that get me through the day, especially on Broadway. -Clay Aiken
