Clay Aiken… Dick Clark – “America’s Oldest Teenager”

By musicfan123 · Comments 15754(8)http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F2012%2F04%2F19%2Fclay-aiken-dick-clark-americas-oldest-teenager%2FClay+Aiken...+Dick+Clark+-+%22America%27s+Oldest+Teenager%222012-04-19+07%3A26%3A29musicfan123http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F%3Fp%3D15754
Thursday, April 19th, 2012

Dick Clark, the man who introduced rock ‘n’ roll to America, died Wednesday morning of a heart attack. Clark was best known as the host of the show American Bandstand, on which he appeared for 31 years.  He was 82.

CBS News wrote about Clark through its Celebrity Circuit blog.  They said:

Long dubbed “the world’s oldest teenager” because of his boyish appearance, Clark bridged the rebellious new music scene and traditional show business, and was equally comfortable whether chatting about music with Sam Cooke or bantering with Ed McMahon about TV bloopers. He thrived as the founder of Dick Clark Productions, supplying movies, game and music shows, beauty contests and more to TV. Among his credits: “The $25,000 Pyramid,” “TV’s Bloopers and Practical Jokes” and the American Music Awards.

For a time in the 1980s, he had shows on all three networks and was listed among the Forbes 400 of wealthiest Americans. Clark also was part of radio as partner in the United Stations Radio Networks, which provided programs – including Clark’s – to thousands of stations.

Dick Clark may be better known to a younger generation as the host of Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve, which began in 1972.

In 1974, at ABC’s request, Clark created the American Music Awards after the network lost the broadcast rights to the Grammy Awards. The American Music Awards have nominations based on sales, airplay, activity on social networks, and video viewing. For the last five years, the winners are determined by online voting.

Clay Aiken and Ruben Studdard had the opportunity to work with Clark in 2003.  Clay and Ruben performed at the American Music Awards, singing for the first time in front of their peers.  The day before the broadcast of the AMA’s, Dick Clark was a guest on the Howard Stern show.  Clark mentioned some of the guests that would be on the show, including Clay and Ruben.  Howard asked about Clay Aiken and Ruben Studdard. Dick said:

“Yes, this number they do together…well, they each sing one song by themselves then they do a number together. I was at rehearsal, and I gotta tell, you it is something special. I feel quite confident that they will receive a standing ovation. All the hairs on the back of my neck stood up.”

Clark was certainly right.  Clay and Ruben did get a standing ovation and everyone was talking about the 17 – second note that Clay held during the duet of Jesus Is Love.  And, to top off a great night, Clay won the Fan’s Choice Award.

I will never tire of watching Clay and Ruben on the 2003 American Music Awards.  It is a night to remember.

Dick Clark - May You Rest In Peace

Where will you be on February 20, 2012?  For some lucky Clay Aiken fans,  they know right where they will be…at Carnegie Hall.  Others will be on-line, hoping to hear about Clay’s first performance at the renowned concert hall.

Sponsored by the Distinguished Concerts International – New York, the concert is titled Reflections of Life.  Billed as a special guest, Clay will be working with well-known, ASCAP award-winning choral composer and arranger, Greg Gilpin.  What a great honor for Clay to work with such a distinguished musician.

Although this is a somewhat serious musical experience, I thought we might have a bit of fun today….This is all in good fun!

The concert at Carnegie Hall will be a classy affair.  So… What should Clay wear?? (I told you its all for fun today!) Here are a few looks that might be appropriate. What do you think?

PBS Special Photo Shoot

GLAAD Awards

Christmas 2007

Tonight Show - Leno

Nick at Night

Emmys

American Music Awards

Billboards

There are so many other great outfits. I probably did not post your favorite. But, I did the best I could. I left out great outfits when I didn’t have a wonderful picture to show it off.

Which outfit is your favorite for Clay to wear on February 20th?  Do you think he might wear a tuxedo instead?

Clay Aiken – “Spaghetti and Meatball”

Last night, I sat in front of my computer hoping for a tweet or message about  “Clay Aiken and His Wonderful Adventures in New York.”   But, no news!!  Do you think it is all locked up until February?  I am beginning to feel that way!

But, as I sat at my desk I couldn’t help but think about the last 8 years and the many exciting and amazing things that Clay has had the opportunity to experience.

Today is November 16, and eight years ago, Clay was standing on the stage of the Shrine Auditorium, accepting the Fan’s Choice Award at the 2003 American Music Awards.

Unlike the Grammys, the American Music Awards nominations are based on sales data compiled by SoundScan and industry trade magazine Radio and Records, while winners are based on ballots sent to more 20,000 record buyers.  Clay was nominated for two awards that night and won the Internet-voted Fans’ Choice award.  The following singers were nominated for the award:

  • Clay Aiken
  • Beyoncé Knowles
  • 50 Cent
  • Matchbox 20
  • Tim McGraw
  • Justin Timberlake

Ruben Studdard joined Clay for a musical performance at the ceremony.  They both sang their popular singles and then joined with a gospel choir to perform “Jesus Is Love,” a beautiful gospel song written by Lionel Richie.  Both Clay and Ruben sounded wonderful as they harmonized together and proved to the audience why they were an important part of the show.

The three-hour telecast was hosted by comedian Jimmy Kimmel who introduced Clay and Ruben as “the spaghetti and meatball” of music.  Clay attended the event with Amber Nix.

Did you watch the show on TV?  What did you think of the duet by Clay and Ruben?

The following are some videos of Clay at the show.  Enjoy!!

Do you have a wish-list for Clay Aiken in 2011 ?  I found an article I wrote last year and was amazed that my list is almost the same.  I did add the last few for this year.  Of course, my biggest wish for Clay is happiness, contentment and lots of love.  However, the following list is about his professional career.

The beginning of any new year brings thoughts of ambitions, objectives, aspirations and purposes; all important things to think about. However, it also allows us the opportunity to put together a wish-list. I believe that everyone has a wish list made up of things that gives them hope and excitement and something to look forward to.

My personal wish list is just that…….personal. However, I do have a wish list regarding Clay Aiken. I bet you have one too. The following are on my Clay Aiken wish list for 2010(2011)

1. Visits with Jimmy Kimmel

2. Lots of Morning Shows with visits and performances

3. Magazine Covers and Articles

4. Musical Awards

5. Concert Tours

6. Photo Shoots

7. Broadway Show

8.  Christmas Album and Special

Well, I am in trouble because this is just the beginning of my wish list and I am running out of room. I just might have to add more another day!

What’s on your Clay Aiken Wish-list??

Clay Aiken – On Stage Three Times!

The  2010 American Music Awards were broadcast live on ABC Sunday evening,  The program was full of epic stage productions.

Justin Bieber was the big winner of the night.  The 16-year-old pop star came away with the awards for breakthrough artist, pop/rock artist and artist of the year. He was the youngest performer in the history of the AMAs to win artist of the year. Bieber also performed during the broadcast, accompanying himself on the piano.

The American Music Awards, known as the AMAs, are given to top performers throughout the music industry on an annual basis. Awards are given in the Pop/Rock, Country, Rap/Hip-Hop, Soul/R&B, Alternative, Adult Contemporary, Latin, Soundtracks and Contemporary Inspirational genres of music. In addition to the awards in each of the genres, an Artist of the Year is named from all groups combined.

The awards are voted on by fans but the nominees are chosen by their presence on Big Champagne’s Ultimate Chart. Artists are ranked on the chart as a result of their music sales combined with their presence on the radio and television, Internet streaming, and their involvement with the public through social media.  In 2007, Dick Clark Productions, who leads the event, moved to a fan based voting system which is conducted through online voting through the ABC website.

Dick Clark started the American Music Awards in 1973.  Michael Jackson co-hosted the first event with Donny Osmond. Roberta Flack won the first award given in 1973.

Clay Aiken has attended and participated in the AMA’s three times.  On November 16, 2003, Clay played a large role in the show.  He arrived on the Red Carpet with his friend Amber Nix and was nominated for two awards, Favorite Male Artist and Fan Choice.  Clay won the Fan Choice Award.  Clay also performed on the program.  Clay sang a short version of Invisible and was then joined by Ruben Studdard for an outstanding rendition of Jesus Is Love.  They received a standing ovation.

On November 11, 2004. Clay was a presenter on the program.  He was joined on stage by Kathy Griffin who was dressed as a bride.  She announced to the audience that she was going to marry Clay.  Despite the distraction, Clay was able to present the award for the Best Male Country Artist.

Clay hit the Red Carpet one more time at the AMA’s.  In 2006, Clay participated in a skit with Tori Spelling.  The two made fun of Clay’s tiff with Kelly Ripa and received lots of laughs and applause.

I have to admit that the only times I have watched the show are the three times that Clay Aiken was a part of the show.  I am not a huge fan of popular music and so the shows are just not my cup of tea!

The following video is fun.  Clay was amazing when he sang at the AMA’s.

Did any of you watch the American Music Awards last night?  I really don’t even know what to say about last night………..so…….I won’t comment.

Instead, I am providing two videos that I prefer to watch.  They show two classy young men who performed for the first time in front of their peers and were amazingly good!!  Ruben Studdard and Clay Aiken received accolades for their performances at the 2003 American Music Awards.  Watching Clay Aiken win the Fan’s Choice Award that night was a bonus.

I don’t know what has happened in 6 years, but may I just say……..”I am so proud to be a fan of Clay Aiken.”

Clay Aiken – AMA Poll

By musicfan123 · Comments 7053(15)http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F2009%2F11%2F16%2Fclay-aiken-ama-poll%2FClay+Aiken+-+AMA+Poll2009-11-16+08%3A04%3A46musicfan123http%3A%2F%2Fwww.claynewsnetwork.com%2F%3Fp%3D7053
Monday, November 16th, 2009

The American Music Awards were created by showman Dick Clark in 1973 as an alternative to the Grammy Awards; they honor achievements in popular music and the recording business. The awards salute the entire spectrum of music, from country-western stars to Soul singers, as well as hard rock, rap and traditional.

The crystal trophy for the American Music Awards is in pyramid shape.  Roberta Flack won the first trophy in 1973.  Since then, more than 30 awards are given each year. The American Music Award is basically a popularity contest based on a poll of CD buyers. The record for the most American Music Awards is 22 which both Whitney Houston and Alabama have received.

The American Music Awards show is broadcast live on network TV each year. It attracts the biggest names in the music business. They appear live on stage as performers, presenters, recipients, and sometimes hosts. The show is not about awards so much as it is about musical performances. Acceptance speeches are limited to 45 seconds. Many notable stars have hosted the show including Elton John, Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin, Glen Campbell, and Natalie Cole.

The 2009 AMA show will be held on Sunday, November 22, 2009, at the Nokia Theatre .

Clay Aiken attended and participated in the American Music Awards three different years.  On November 16, 2003, Clay attended the show with Amber Nix.  He performed Invisible and Jesus in Love as a duet with Ruben.  Clay won the Fan’s Choice Award.

The next year, on November 14th, Clay presented the Favorite Male Artist Award.  Kathy Griffin walked out wearing a wedding dress and declaring her love for Clay. “I think your obsession with me has gone too far,” was Clay’s retort.

Finally, on November 21, 2006, Jimmy Kimmel was the host. He introduced Clay by saying

“It’s no surprise that our next guests wanted to present together, as you probably read in all of the tabloids, she is carrying his baby. Just back from their lavish wedding in Rome, Tori Spelling and Clay Aiken.”

They walk out hand in hand. Another highlight of the evening came when Clay poked fun at his “Live” spat with Kelly Ripa. Clay spoofed his hand-over-the-mouth exchange with the talk show host while he and Tori Spelling were onstage to introduce John Mayer. As Clay introduced the singer, Tori placed her hand over his mouth, saying, “And I’ll tell you where that hand has been later.

Although the show is not my favorite to watch, I hope that Clay will attend again and receive another award.

Typical of Clay, his look at each show was dramatically different. Which look is you favorite from the AMA’s?

Quote of the Day

It is not always about performance art, but about receiving positive energy from people with positive spirits. Sometimes we can see someone's spirit, and those are the people with great energy. Those are the people that get me through the day, especially on Broadway. -Clay Aiken
