This Is The Moment

Last 2 Verses

This is the moment -
My final test -
Destiny beckoned,
I never reckoned,
Second Best!

I won’t look down,
I must not fall!
This is the moment,
The sweetest moment of them all!

This is the moment!
Damn all the odds!
This day, or never,
I’ll sit forever
With the gods!

When I look back,
I will always recall,
Moment for moment,
This was the moment,
The greatest moment
Of them all!

Many years ago, I was given the CD of the music from the Broadway show, Jekyll & Hyde.  My entire family enjoyed listening to the music and each one of us had our favorite song.  It was fun learning more about the talented man who had that exciting music in his soul.

Frank Wildhorn, 53, was born in New York and taught himself the piano while in high school.  His interest was varied and he wrote and performed music ranging from Rock & roll to Rhythm & Blues to Jazz.  He graduated from The University of Southern California where he began writing Jekyll & Hyde.

The following are a few facts about Frank Wildhorn:

  1. In 1999, he became the first composer in 22 years to have three shows running simultaneously on Broadway.
  2. His shows have been nominated for 8 Tony Awards.
  3. He wrote the #1 hit by Whitney Houston, Where Do Broken Hearts Go.
  4. There have been 11 international recordings of Jekyll & Hyde recorded in 7 languages.
  5. The music from Jekyll & Hyde has been featured at the Olympics, the Super Bowl, the World Series, the Miss America Pageant, and President Bill Clinton’s Inauguration.
  6. Wildhorn launched 6 Broadway scores in 14 years, no small feat.
  7. His last musical, Bonnie & Clyde was not a success and closed after only 69 performances.
  8. He was married to Linda Eder for six years and they have a young son. They were divorced in 2004.

When I first heard Clay Aiken sing, I always hoped that I might hear him perform This Is The Moment, from Jekyll & Hyde.  When I found out he sang it at the Pieces of Gold Show in Raleigh, I was not surprised.  I was thrilled when he sang it again in Raleigh at the Bringing Broadway Home concert on June 21, 2010.  It was wonderful to hear one of my favorite songs performed by my favorite singer.

ENJOY!!

Clay Aiken – Beautiful Melodies and Touching Lyrics

Friday, August 12th, 2011

I got a bit off schedule last night.  It seems I got lost watching YouTubes of Clay Aiken.  I found one YouTube that, although it is not too old, I had forgotten about.  It was a video of Clay and Lauren Kennedy performing together at the Bringing Broadway Home Concert in Raleigh.  Held on June 21, 2010 at the Raleigh Memorial Auditorium, the concert was a benefit for the North Carolina Theatre.

Lauren and Clay joined together to sing a beautiful song titled In Whatever Time We Have.  The song was unfamiliar to me, but it was beautiful and I decided to learn more about it.

In Whatever Time We Have is a song from the two-act musical play titled Children of Eden.  Stephen Schwartz wrote the music and lyrics.  The musical is based on the Book of Genesis.  The play had a short run on London’s West End, but never made it to Broadway.

It was interesting to read more about Stephen Schwartz.  Schwartz has been an accomplished composer for over 40 years.  Some of the musicals he has written are Godspell, Pippin, and the very popular Wicked.  At one time he had three award winning shows all running on Broadway at the same time.

Schwartz then began working in film.  He collaborated with composer Alan Menken on the scores for Pocahontas and The Hunchback of Notre Dame.  He most recently collaborated with Alan Menken on the songs for Disney’s movie, ENCHANTED.

Schwartz has won almost every major award in his field, including three Oscars, four Grammys, four Drama Desk Awards, one Golden Globe Award, and the Richard Rodgers Award for Excellence in Musical Theater.  He has also received six Tony Award nominations. Mr. Schwartz was recently given a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and inducted into the Theatre Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

OK…no wonder I liked the song!!  Schwartz is an amazing talent.  There are few people who can write both beautiful melodies and touching lyrics.

The following are the lyrics of In Whatever Time We Have.  It is worth reading the words.  Then, watch and listen to Clay and Lauren as they perform this beautiful song.  It seems to be a perfect match.

In whatever time we have
For as long as we are living
We can face whatever comes
If we face it now as one
I could make it on my own
Now I know that I don’t have to
No one really wants to be alone
In whatever time we have

In whatever time we have
After all this time without you
It’s not easy to be sure
It’s not easy to believe

All we know for sure is this
Though the world could end tomorrow
You and I will be together
In whatever time we have

We know life can be a battlefield
But we won’t run
And we won’t heel
You’ll be my fortress
And I will be your shield
No one really wants to be alone
In whatever time we have

If at times we are afraid
With so little to believe in
It’s alright to feel afraid
I will hold you in the dark

We could live a hundred years
Or the world could end tomorrow
But we know we’ll be together
In whatever time

From this day forward nights won’t seem so black
From this day forward we will never look back
In whatever time we have
We will make the most of time
And at least we’ll be together
In whatever time we have

Clay Aiken – Home

The Wiz is a musical that retells the original Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum. The book, by William F. Brown and the music and lyrics by Charlie Smalls strives to tell the story in the context of the African American culture.

The musical originally opened in October, 1974 in Baltimore and moved to New York for a January 5, 1975 Broadway  opening.  The Broadway production won seven Tony Awards, including the award for the Best Musical.  It is a show that received mainstream acceptance for an all-black cast.  The musical has played all over the world and was adapted for film in 1978.  Although the film had many top stars in the cast, it was considered a disappointment.

Most people feel that the success of The Wiz was on the shoulders of Charlie Smalls who wrote both the music and lyrics.

Charlie Smalls began giving piano concerts at age 5. He received a scholarship from the Henry Street Settlement and entered Julliard when he was 11. He graduated from Julliard in 1961. Smalls attended the High School of Performing Arts.

He was a pianist with the New York Jazz Repertory Company and toured with Hugh Masekela, Harry Belafonte, Esther Morrow, and others.

He entered the Air Force and played with the Air Force Band, where his greatest accomplishment was writing a Christmas carol for John F. Kennedy’s daughter, Caroline.

He began working on The Wiz in 1970 and gained national attention.

Smalls had been writing the score for Miracles, based on the H.G. Wells novel The Man Who Could Work Miracles. He recorded several songs with Geoffrey Holder and the Harlem Boys Choir.

Smalls died on August 27, 1987 during surgery for a burst appendix in a Belgium hospital. He was 43.

Stephanie Mills performed the song in the Broadway production.  Motown Productions bought the rights to the stage show and expected Stephanie Mills to play the part of Dorothy.  However, Diana Ross wanted the role.  Although almost everyone considered her too old for the role, she was cast because she said she would be able to guarantee that Michael Jackson would play the Scarecrow if she were cast.

Home is one of most popular songs from The Wiz. Originally written for the character of Dorothy, the song has been sung by many well-known artists, including Barbra Streisand, Diana Ross, and Kristen Chenoweth.

By far the most beautiful and passionate performance is by Clay Aiken.  Clay first performed the beautiful song in Raleigh, North Carolina on June 21, 2010 for a show titled Bringing Broadway Home.  The one-night-only event celebrated 27 seasons of Broadway at North Carolina Theatre.

Clay performed Home again on Broadway as part of the cast of Broadway Backwards, a charity program for BC/EFA on February 7, 2011.

If you are a fan of Clay Aiken, you know how important his home and family is to him.  The song is a perfect match to this outstanding singer.

The talented SueReu put together a fabulous video that combines the beauty of Clay’s performance of Home with wonderful looks into Clay’s love of his home and family.  It is perhaps the best video I have seen that combines Clay’s beautiful musicianship and the beauty of who he is.  Thank you, Sue.  Do you have stock in Kleenex?

For me, Sunday, January 2nd was the official end of the holiday season.  Between Christmas and the New Year, life here was pretty hectic.  As much fun as it was to be surrounded by family, I look forward to getting back to a less frantic schedule.

For the reason above, I have chosen to publish three of my  favorite Clay Aiken memories of 2010.  Even if you have seen these video before, they are worth another play.  These songs fit Clay perfectly.

Are you interested in some Clay concert tickets??  If so, stay tuned because in a few days we will be having a contest for 2 concert tickets for the San Francisco Concert on Saturday,March 12th.  These tickets should be good as they were bought as part of the PBS Pledge to KQED.  I think the contest will be fun and I hope that the tickets will find a good home.  More info about the contest and the tickets will be posted tomorrow.

Enjoy the videos!!

Well…..it has started!!  Check out the following graphic.  Isn’t it nice to see??

We all would love to hear Clay Aiken performing Unchained Melody on the AC radio stations.  Well, devoted fan, MagicalMusic,  decided to do something about it.  She requested the song and  received the following e-mail from the station:

So glad to have you as a listener of Ez~! We’ll play Clay Aiken’s “Unchained Melody” just now and trust you’re able to be tuned.
We’ll check out others by Clay Aiken and will be glad to add some.
Again, thank you for being with us tonight.

Lane and Martha in Atlanta

Thank you, Magical………you got the ball rolling!!!

As we look towards the end of the year, we cannot help but think of the exciting things that happened for Clay this year.  It is a time of reflection.  I thought it might be interesting if everyone took a moment and let us know their TOP Clay moments for 2010.  Maybe there is just one, but maybe you have a Top Ten List.  What ever it is, lets see if we can put together a list of 2010 Top Clay Aiken moments.

For me:

1.  That “moment” in Unchained Melody…..the key change just builds to an amazing place…..

2.  Bringing Broadway Home…….why did I make the decision to stay at home that night?  It was amazing.

3.  Clay’s beautiful performance of Both Sides Now will be something I will remember forever.

4.  Reno……Hammer pants…….Clay was so proud to show off the outfit, including the bling around his waist!!   AND….I was there!!

5.  Amazed and excited that Linda Eder was on the stage with Clay in Raleigh.  I have been lucky enough to see her in concert twice before her appearance in Raleigh.

Clay Aiken Sings From 500 Greatest Songs of All Time!

By musicfan123 · Comments 10048(11)http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F2010%2F10%2F10%2Fclay-aiken-sings-from-500-greatest-songs-of-all-time%2FClay+Aiken+Sings+From+500+Greatest+Songs+of+All+Time%212010-10-10+08%3A02%3A34musicfan123http%3A%2F%2Fwww.claynewsnetwork.com%2F%3Fp%3D10048
Sunday, October 10th, 2010

During a conversation with some friends on Saturday night, the topic of the Beatles was brought to the table.  Most of the conversation was remembrances of the excitement the Beatles brought to the world of music.  Most of our group remembered the enormous popularity of the Beatles and someone even brought up the term, “Beatlemania.”

Formed in Liverpool, England, in 1960, the Beatles were one of the most commercially successful and critically acclaimed acts in the history of popular music.

Saturday was John Lennon’s birthday.  He would have been 70 on Oct. 9 had he not been killed in 1980 by a deranged fan at the age of 40.

Of course, talk about music with my friends means that Clay Aiken and his amazing musicianship will be a part of the conversation.  After some discussion, we decided that Clay had performed three Beatles songs and one song from the pen of John Lennon.

As a contestant on American Idol in 2003, Clay sang Here, There and Everywhere. According to Wikipedia:

“Here, There and Everywhere” is a song written primarily by Paul McCartney, recorded for the Beatles 1966 album Revolver.  In his biography Many Years From Now, McCartney said the song is one of his favorites. Beatles’ producer George Martin has also mentioned it as one of his favorite McCartney songs. John Lennon reportedly told McCartney it was “the best tune on the album” and said in his 1980 Playboy interview it was “one of my favorite songs of the Beatles.” Mojo ranked it the 4th greatest song of all time in 2000.

Clay included Can’t Buy Me Love as a part of the Jukebox Tour.  As part of the 60’s medley, the song was a great hit.

According to Songfacts.com this was one of the first Pop songs to start with the chorus rather than a verse. That was producer George Martin’s idea.

When pressed by American journalists in 1966 to reveal the song’s “true” meaning, McCartney denied that “Can’t Buy Me Love” was about prostitution, stating that, although it was open to interpretation, that suggestion was going too far, saying: “The idea behind it was that all these material possessions are all very well, but they won’t buy me what I really want. ” Although he was to later comment: “It should have been ‘Can Buy Me Love’ ” when reflecting on the perks that money and fame had brought him

Can’t Buy Me Love” was recorded on 29 January 1964 in Paris, France.

In March, 2010, Clay sang a touching performance of In My Life.  During the recording of his PBS Special, Clay introduced his former teachers and asked his 6th grade teacher to take a special bow.  He told the audience that this special lady was the reason he made it through 6th grade.  He then sang an amazing rendition of In My Life.

John Lennon wrote the original song, but McCartney contributed a great deal to the final version.  The song was released on the 1965 album Rubber Soul.  The song is ranked #5 on the list of the Beatles 100 Greatest Songs.  It is also ranked 23rd on Rolling Stone list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

In 1971, John Lennon released an album titled Imagine.  The title song was released as a single in the United States and reached number three on the Billboard Hot 100.  Lennon always said that Imagine was as good as anything he had ever written with the Beatles.  Rolling Stone also made the list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time at #3

Clay sang Imagine as part of the finale of “Bringing Broadway Home”, a wonderful benefit concert for the North Carolina Theatre.  Clay was joined by Lauren Kennedy, Sharon Lawrence, Terrence Mann, and Quiana Parler to close the exciting concert held on June 21, 2010.

Each of these performances by Clay Aiken is amazing.  Which one is your favorite?  Did I leave out any songs?  A big “thank-you” to LovesClaysVoice for her help in finding the videos for this article.

Sometimes there are just some performances that stay with you for months.  For me, I just can’t forget June 21, 2010.  Clay Aiken was one of the stars of a wonderful program in Raleigh called “Bringing Broadway Home.”  Clay sang three  songs that night that I would love to hear him sing in concert again and again.  They were certainly the highlight of the evening for me.  What do you think?

Quote of the Day

It is not always about performance art, but about receiving positive energy from people with positive spirits. Sometimes we can see someone's spirit, and those are the people with great energy. Those are the people that get me through the day, especially on Broadway. -Clay Aiken
