Clay Aiken – So Much Talent In One Place

Tuesday, December 6th, 2011

Can you imagine seeing Hugh Jackman, Bernadette Peters, and Daniel Radcliff on the same stage at the same time?  Well if you were a member of the audience at the New Amsterdam Theatre on Tuesday, December 6th, you were lucky enough to see these stars and many more as they were a part of The 23rd Annual Gypsy of the Year, put on by Broadway Cares/ Equity Fights Aids.

I was fortunate to see this amazing show on Tuesday.  I can’t remember ever seeing so much talent in one theatre before.  The audience was filled with musicians, producers, directors, and fans that are an important part of the Broadway family.

Picture from Playbill

The opening number of the show featured the original cast of Grease.  They were together again for a special 40-year anniversary tribute.  It was so much fun seeing Barry Bostwick who was the original Danny.  He still has the strut and Grease hairstyle.  Adrienne Barbeau, who played Rizzo looked amazing.  I bet she would still fit in her original costumes.  Each actor looked happy to be on stage and it was so much fun to see them 40 years later.

I was thrilled to see Ben Cohn’s name on the program.  He was credited as the creator, music director, and arranger of the Grease opening.  Most Clay Aiken fans already know how talented Ben is as a musician.  He seems to be the “go-to” guy for special shows on Broadway!

A highlight of the program for me was the performance by the Broadway cast of Billy Elliot.  The show is closing on January 8, 2012 so this was a farewell appearance at Gypsy of the Year.  All the actors who have played the role of Billy were on stage.  It was fun to see some of the talented young men who have grown about a foot since their time in the show.

Seventeen Broadway and Off-Broadway companies performed on Tuesday, which means that there were more than 300 actors, singers, and dancers on the stage during the afternoon.

Much like the Easter Bonnet Competition, the Gypsy show is a competition between the different shows.  The shows have six weeks to fundraise for BC/EFA.  Awards are presented to the top fundraisers.  They also have awards for the best presentation during the show.

Hugh Jackman, Bernadette Peters, and Daniel Radcliffe presented the awards for the show.

Seth Rudetsky who is a musician, actor, and columnist for Playbill.com kept the show moving as the host for the afternoon.  Judith Light gave a tribute to those people who lost their fight with Aids.  It was a solemn tribute that ended with a moment of silence.

Last year, the Gypsy of the Year raised $3,776,720.  From all reports, this year topped that amount.  All the official numbers will be available soon.

After the performance, I was able to attend the celebration dinner hosted by Playbill Magazine.  It was held upstairs in Sardi’s.  The first people I ran into were Ben Cohn and Sean McDaniel.  Ben shared that they will be in Raleigh for the Gala.  I think that we have something very special to look forward to.

So…this was my adventure in New York today.  Is there a tie-in to Clay Aiken?  Well, the best I can do is say that Clay has certainly supported Broadway Care/Equity Fights Aids.  He is the one who introduced me to the very worthwhile organization.

Only a few more days until we meet in Raleigh.  Are you packed yet?

Clay Aiken – Dirty Dancing

By musicfan123 · Comments 12217(10)http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F2011%2F09%2F26%2Fclay-aiken-dirty-dancing%2FClay+Aiken+-+Dirty+Dancing2011-09-26+07%3A35%3A27musicfan123http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F%3Fp%3D12217

Do you remember the movie, Dirty Dancing?  Released in 1987, the romantic film starred Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze.

Dirty Dancing was a huge box office hit. It earned over $214 million worldwide. It was also the first film to sell more than a million copies on home video.

Patrick Swayze, the romantic dancer in the movie had his first professional appearance as a dancer for Disney on Parade. Next, he was seen as a replacement playing the role of Danny Zuko in the long-running production of Grease on Broadway.

Swayze, chosen by People magazine as the “Sexiest Man Alive” in 1991 was most famous for his role in Dirty Dancing and the 1990 film, Ghost.

Jennifer Grey is the daughter of stage and Academy Award-winning actor Joel Grey.  As a young actor she was best know for her role as Ferris Bueller’s sister and her role of Baby in Dirty Dancing.

In the early 1990s, Grey underwent a rhinoplasty procedure that many people thought was not helpful to her looks and they thought it was one of the reasons she was not asked to star in many more projects.

After two very serious accidents, Grey became the winner of season 11 of Dancing With The Stars in 2010.

WAIT…What does this have to do with Clay Aiken?  Well, if you know the talented SueReu and the way she is able to put together wonderful videos, you won’t be surprised that she put together a wonderful new video to Clay’s performance of Unchained Melody.  Using the beautiful arrangement by Ben Cohn, Clay’s voice is the backdrop for Jennifer Grey’s dancing in both Dirty Dancing and Dancing With The Stars.

Clay Aiken – Those Magic Changes

By musicfan123 · Comments 9902(12)http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F2010%2F06%2F29%2Fclay-aiken-those-magic-changes%2FClay+Aiken+-+Those+Magic+Changes2010-06-29+07%3A38%3A52musicfan123http%3A%2F%2Fwww.claynewsnetwork.com%2F%3Fp%3D9902
Tuesday, June 29th, 2010

On June 21, 2010, Clay Aiken performed in Raleigh at a concert called Bringing Broadway Back. The evening was a wonderful mix of performances by five talented performers who reminded the audience of the excitement of the music of Broadway.

One of the surprise highlights of the evening was Clay’s performance of Those Magic Changes, a song from the musical Grease. The song, usually considered a throwaway in the musical, was full of fun, and great vocals.  The audience, with the encouragement of Terrence Mann, participated in the fun rendition by clapping in rhythm as Clay showed that he could sing all types of music with panache and vocal agility.  With the great performance of this song, I wondered who wrote it.

Jim Jacob and Warren Casey are best known as the co-authors of the hit musical Grease, a rock-n-roll parody of 1950s high school life.  They wrote the book, music and lyrics of the hit musical that was a light musical romance about teenagers

Originally staged as a five-hour amateur production in a Chicago trolley barn, Grease took a satirical look at the dress, manners, morals, and music of teenagers at the beginning of the rock and roll era. The original version was just a play with music, not a musical.

It just happened that two young theatre producers, Ken Waissman and Maxine Fox, saw the show.

Waissman said of the authors:

‘I told them I liked their idea, but that it wouldn’t work as a play.  It had to be a musical. I told them if they were willing to move to New York, rewrite the thing from scratch with a full score, we’d like to do it as a Broadway musical.

‘They thought about it a few minutes, and then agreed. They were taking quite a gamble. It meant leaving their jobs. Warren was a lingerie buyer for a department store and Jim was a copywriter.

‘They came here and worked every day on the show, on something that might have run only one or two nights — because eight out of ten shows don’t last very long on Broadway.’

Grease opened Off-Broadway at the downtown Eden Theater, and then moved to Broadway to play at the Broadhurst Theater and eventually the Royale. At 3,388 performances the show set a record as the longest running on Broadway until 1980, when A Chorus Line overtook it. The original cast featured Barry Bostwick and Carole Demas.

What an amazing bit of luck for these two amateur composers.  Jim Jacobs is still active in the Broadway community in New York.  Warren Casey died of AIDS in 1988.

The first  video is Clay as he sang in Raleigh.  It certainly brings out the smiles.  The second video is interesting as it is  Johnny Contardo with ShaNaNa singing the same song.  What do you think of the gold outfit?

Quote of the Day

It is not always about performance art, but about receiving positive energy from people with positive spirits. Sometimes we can see someone's spirit, and those are the people with great energy. Those are the people that get me through the day, especially on Broadway. -Clay Aiken
