Friday, March 30th, 2012

It is Friday, March 30th…Clay Aiken is still the “king of Buzz” on the Internet.  There are so many mentions about Clay, it is almost laughable.  You would think he was saving the world.  Well, personally, I love that he is still an important name in the entertainment industry.

I have picked a few interesting things to write about as I cannot even begin to cover all the 25, 000 articles.

The following was posted at the National Inclusion Project Website…  If you have ever wanted to have a special Clay Aiken memory, why not bid on his Hawaiian shirt from Celebrity Apprentice.  The money will help support The National Inclusion Project:

You can read about the auction and make a bid at NIP  This is a win-win event!

There are three interesting videos that were posted on Thursday.  I am not able to embed them, but the links are posted below.

First, there is a very short video that shows the friendship between Clay and Arsenio.  Who ever thought we would see Clay “fight” with Arsenio.  I hope that Celebrity Apprentice includes this in the episode on Sunday night.  You can see the video at EntertainmentWeekly

The next video is from Stars Entertainment.  It is a long preview of the next episode of Celebrity Apprentice.  The show is scheduled to start an hour early on Sunday and will show lots of fun and excitement for 3 hours!!  You can see the video at STARS

Another fun video is an interview with Ivanka Trump.  She talks about her favorite Celebrity Apprentice moments.  You can see the video at  Life Videopedia

The Hollywood Reporter posted an article titled:

What’s Behind Clay Aiken’s Media Blitz?

After flying under the radar, the “American Idol” alum has resurfaced to resurrect his candid persona, competing on “Celebrity Apprentice,” confessing to plastic surgery and weighing in on the Trayvon Martin tragedy.

Clay Aiken is stepping back into the limelight, revealing more personality than ever.

The 33-year-old singer will always be part of the permanent pop-culture lexicon after gaining fame as one of the most successful runners-up in American Idol history, dating back nine years to season two.

But he has also been fiercely private, despite flashes of outspokenness. (See: Aiken’s bitter 2009 tiradeagainst fellow Idol also-ran Adam Lambert, one of whose TV performances he slammed as “awful,” “contrived” and “slightly frightening.”)

For years, Aiken — whose fans are dubbed “Claymates” — appeared to be in hiding from his true self, dodging persistent questions about his sexuality. In September 2008, he publicly confirmed he’s gay, months after welcoming a son, Parker Foster Aiken, with friend Jaymes Foster, the sister of music producer David Foster. She produced his fourth studio album, On My Way Here, released that same year.

In July 2010, Aiken dropped a disc of standards called Tried and True, and this week, he returns from a two-year album hiatus with the follow-up Steadfast, a tribute to ’50s and ’60s songs. It contains seven tracks from Tried and True, plus a pair of covers and one original song in a repackaging of his previous effort.

In that sense, he appears to be capitalizing on his current stint as a contestant on NBC’sCelebrity Apprentice, the Donald Trump-created ego franchise from which Aiken most certainly would have shied away several years ago. He can be seen Sunday nights competing for cash (all proceeds go to charity) alongside Arsenio Hall, Debbie Gibsonand Real Housewife Teresa Giudice.

Aiken marked a media appearance to promote his projects on Tuesday’s edition of the Bravo chatfest Watch What Happens, hosted by Andy Cohen. The no-holds-barred tone of the show seemed to rub off on Aiken, who confessed to having plastic surgery.

“I had operative surgery on my jaw for a TMJ thing and I had them suck the fat out of my chin while they were in there,” he said, not mentioning the date on which he went under the knife. “I was like, ‘You know what, while I’m already down, go ahead and take the vacuum in there and suck the fat out of my chin.’”

(It’s worth noting that Aiken has made a cameo on NBC’s 30 Rock as the cousin of the character Kenneth (Jack McBrayer), whose weak chin is a running joke on the series.)

In another candid conversation, the singer and reality star weighed in on the tragic death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, who was shot dead by neighorhood watchman George Zimmerman while unarmed last month.

“The Trayvon Martin story has gotten a lot of coverage already but this is in memory of him,” Aiken told the Huffington Post on Wednesday, sporting a hooded sweatshirt in tribute to the Florida teen. “As a father, you think about your own kid and mine is really young but this could be anyone’s child. We need to have something happen here, some sort justice and arrest. I’m not saying a conviction, I’m just saying an arrest and a jury deciding this instead of just some cops.”

According to the Huff Post, citing sources, Aiken “does very well” during his Apprenticerun.

Nearly 10 years since his overnight Idol fame, the once-shy performer seems to be making a concerted effort to remain in the spotlight, where he seemingly belongs — and wants to be.

I hope you will visit this site and leave a comment.  Too bad they didn’t choose an up-to-date picture of Clay.  You can read the article at HOLLYWOODREPORTER

What will Friday bring to the ClayNation?  I hope it brings rest to Clay Aiken and some more fun for his fans!!

A big thank you to both the ClayBoard and Clayversity for the screen-caps.

Clay Aiken – The Shrinking Music Industry

By musicfan123 · Comments 13823(5)http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F2011%2F12%2F30%2Fclay-aiken-the-shrinking-music-industry%2FClay+Aiken+-+The+Shrinking+Music+Industry2011-12-30+09%3A55%3A54musicfan123http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F%3Fp%3D13823

The Music Business Registry is a business that publishes contact directories for the music industry.  In business since 1992, their registry is an important part of the music business.  It is considered the most complete directory available for the people you need to reach in the music industry.

The Music Business Registry published four different journals:

  • A & R Registry
  • Film  & Television Music Guide
  • Music Publishers
  • Music Attorneys, Legal and Business

Each publication is revised constantly and is published every 8 weeks.

This past week, the company published some interesting results about the music industry.  It seem that in the past five years, 319 A & R executives have been let go by the major record houses.  A & R executives are the people who do the talent scouting and work to develop the talent. They also act as a liaison between artists and the record label. A = artists:  R = Repertoire.

According to Paul Resnikoff at Digital Music News:

Out of those 36 A&R executives who left their A&R positions in 2011, only 1 of them so far, has gotten another job in A&R,” Music Registry founder Ritch Esra relayed.  ”In 2010, 40 A&R executives exited their A&R positions at various labels and not one of them had gotten another A&R job in 2010.”

That being said, there are some important hires over the past couple of months.  Paul lists Jaymes and David Foster signing as A & R executives with UMG/Verve as an important step for UMG.

Top A & R Executives have influenced the course of music history.  These are the people who sign the artists and choose the type of music that we listen to.  Because of the new forms of digital distribution, it is questionable if A & R executives will still have as much influence on the public’s musical tastes as they have in the past.

Whatever the future, it is good to see Jaymes and David Foster a part of the Universal Music Group.  They seem to find some amazing talent.

What do you think?  Do you think that record labels are a thing of the past or are they still the way to go for recording artists?  Will Jaymes and David help Clay at Universal?

Clay Aiken – David Foster – A Friend, Colleague and Family

By musicfan123 · Comments 12344(6)http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F2011%2F10%2F03%2Fclay-aiken-david-foster-a-friend-colleague-and-family%2FClay+Aiken+-+David+Foster+-+A+Friend%2C+Colleague+and+Family2011-10-03+07%3A32%3A44musicfan123http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F%3Fp%3D12344

If you are a fan of music, you have probably heard the name David Foster. If you are a fan of Clay Aiken, you probably know that Clay and David and friends, colleagues and family.  David Foster has built an incredible musical career over the last 40 years.  However, even with all his success, David is still busy, helping young musicians, writing music and touring all over the world.

This month, David will be touring throughout Asia.  Titled David Foster and Friends Asian Tour 2011, the concerts will feature Michael Bolton, Phillip Bailey, Charice, and Russell Watson.  The 9 – concert tour will visit five countries in Asia.

When David returns to North America, he is scheduled to perform at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas on November 25, 2011 and December 29, 2011.

Foster prides himself in his ability to put together musicians who he feels can help and support each other.  A few years ago, Foster hosted a PBS party at his home.  He introduced world-renowned pianist Jeffrey Biegel to Neil Sedaka.  Sedaka was working on a piano concerto and after meeting at Foster’s home, the two worked together to enhance the composition.

After many long hours of work, Biegel performed the original composition last September 12th.  The piece, titled Manhattan Intermezzo, was a hit and Biegel said that each time he plays the composition it “touches my heart.”  Another great musical collaboration made possible by David Foster.

On June 17, 2011, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce Walk of Fame committee announced the new Walk of Fame Honorees for 2012.  David Foster was selected to receive his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.  Selected for his contributions to the recording industry, David will join others, including Vince Gill, Hal David and Barry White as they see their star unveiled next year!  Congratulations, David.  You certainly deserve this honor.

What else is in the future for David Foster?  Well, last July, The Hollywood Reporter announced that David was named the new chief at Verve Music Group.  According to THR:

Foster’s arrival at Verve Music Group, which includes imprints GRP and Impulse (home to John Coltrane’s catalog), is part of Universal Music Group chairman and CEO Lucian Grainge’s plan to reinvest in UMG’s creative resources. Under Foster, Verve is expected to shift its focus to adult contemporary pop, or “what David does best, from Groban on down,” says a source. The label’s roster includes Herbie Hancock, Diana Krall and Ledisi. It also has released albums by Queen Latifah, American Idol alum Katharine McPhee and Treme regular Trombone Shorty……..Foster’s sister Jaymes is also expected to join the creative team.

I really hope that this information is correct.  It sounds wonderful…however; I am having trouble finding sources to collaborate the article from The Hollywood Reporter. I spent almost an hour on Google last night and I found nothing…nil…nada… There is no mention on Fosters official website, on the Verve Music Group website or Universal Music Group.  It has been over 2 months.   I hope we get official confirmation soon.  If any of you have more information, I would love to see it.

David Foster is one of the most commercially successful producers and composers in all of popular music. He has a lot to be proud of in his life.  One can only hope that he will continue to find new talent, produce and write many more hits.

Someone just sent me another source for the Verve mention:

Robin Leach :  The Las Vegas Sun

“In between his three new Las Vegas shows, David will play various Asian cities for three weeks with his traveling company. But for the first time in his career, he’s got two months where he has no plans whatsoever to produce or record. After a near-lifelong producer commitment at Capitol, he’s now free until his first day at Universal on Dec. 1.”

The River Rock Show Theatre at the River Rock Casino Resort in Richmond, BC was the setting of a two-day event that featured Clay Aiken.

On September 9th, 2006,   David Foster sponsored the Star Search Finals. Clay was a judge at this event. Although he did not sing, Clay was very involved in his job as a judge. Besides providing critiques of each performance, Clay also gave each contestant advice on what they could do to improve. He attended the rehearsal in the afternoon and worked with the contestants, giving them advice on everything from their songs to their vocal performance to their stage presence.

The fans that were in attendance commented that the judges seemed to have a wonderful time together. They were pleased to see that Clay and David seemed to be such good friends.

The next night, there was a special fund raising Gala Event in support of the David Foster Foundation, a unique charity assisting families with children requiring life saving organ transplants. The exclusive, private function was limited to a 1000 benefactors, with all the proceeds going directly to the Foundation.

The evening started with a Pre Show Cocktail Party and was followed by a Live Auction and then a star-studded concert by David Foster and his friends. Michael Buble was the headliner. Other performers included “Babyface”, Olivia Newton John, George Lopez and, of course, Clay Aiken.

Part of the auction was a piano that David had used in many performances. There were two bidders who were interested in the piano.. When the bidding stalled at $280,000,  David came out to sign the piano and say that he would give a private concert to the winning bid. The bidding stalled again at $310,000, and Clay came to say he would sing. David says, “What a bargain, this guy gets $250,000 per show”. The bidding went right to $500,000.

David Foster was very complimentary when he introduced Clay in the concert. He reminded the audience that Clay had sold over 600,000 copies of his first CD in the first week of sales. He said:

What an amazing singer. What an amazing story. He’ll tell you some of it; he used to be a school teacher, this kid. Please welcome the FANTASTIC… CLAY… AIKEN!

Clay performed three songs that evening; Right Here Waiting For You, Unchained Melody and Without You. He was accompanied by David Foster on the piano and a small back-up band. Clay enjoyed a standing ovation after each song.

The two events were fun-filled and wonderful for Clay Aiken fans.

There are four videos posted with this article. They are wonderful.

#4 should be the first one

Clay Aiken – Enjoy Each Others Company

Today I am writing the first of a series of articles entitled: Where Are They Now?  I plan on looking up some of the people that have performed with Clay Aiken and sharing what they are doing now. How many articles will be in the series depends of a lot of things:

  1. How long we go before we get up-to-date news about Clay
  2. If readers like or dislike the idea
  3. Up-to-date information is available to write an article.

So…here we go!!

Do you remember the song, Whatever Happened To My Part (The Diva’s Lament)?  I will never forget hearing that song at the Shubert Theatre in New York when Hannah Waddingham took to the stage during Act II of Spamalot.  Yes, the character had been on stage during Act I, but this song was a highlight and really showed the power and musicality of Hannah.  The role was not new to Hannah.  She originated the role in London and received an Olivier Award nomination for her efforts.

When Hannah left Spamalot in New York, she returned to her home in London and has been busy the entire time.

On November 22, 2008, Hannah Waddingham starred as Desiree in the revival of Stephen Sondheim’s A Little Night Music at London’s Menier Chocolate Factory. The production started out at a small theatre, but was so popular, it moved to a larger theatre.  Hannah received amazing reviews from all the critics and was nominated for an Olivier Award in 2010 as nest actress in a musical or entertainment for her performance in A Little Night Music.

During August and September of 2010, Waddingham portrayed The Witch in a revival of Stephen Sondheim’s Into The Woods at London’s Regent Park Open Air Theatre.

I was lucky enough to see The Merry Wives of Windsor at the Regent Park Open Air Theatre a number of years ago.  It was an amazing experience even though my mother, sister and I sat in Trash bags in the rain so we wouldn’t miss a minute of the play.

Again, Hannah received rave reviews for her performance of the Witch and it took hours for her to get into her make-up and costume!

Currently, Hannah is starring as The Wicked Witch of the West/Miss Gulch in the new Andrew Lloyd Webber production of The Wizard of Oz.

According to Broadway World:

“We’re off to see…”

The most magical adventure of them all.

Follow the yellow brick road over the rainbow and into The London Palladium, the capital’s home of the family musical.

Andrew Lloyd Webber’s new production of The Wizard of Oz is an enchanting adaptation of the all time classic, totally reconceived for the stage by the award-winning creative team that delighted audiences of all ages with their recent London Palladium revival of The Sound of Music.

Developed from the ever popular MGM screenplay this new production contains all the much-loved songs from the Oscar winning movie score, all the favourite characters and iconic moments, plus a few surprises along the way, including new songs by Andrew Lloyd Webber.

Click your heels together and join Scarecrow, Tin Man, Lion, Dorothy and her little dog Toto, as they journey through the magical land of Oz to meet the Wizard and obtain their heart’s desires. Watch out for the Wicked Witch of the West and her winged monkeys as you rediscover the real story of Oz in this fantastic musical treat for all the family.

Again, Hannah is receiving rave reviews for her role in The Wizard of Oz.  This talented lady seems to fit into whatever role she tackles.  At this time, Hannah is scheduled to leave The Wizard of Oz in about 2 weeks.  I hope she has a chance to take a vacation and relax for a few weeks.

It was obvious that Clay and Hannah enjoyed each others company and became good friends.  It has been reported that Clay has visited Hannah in London.  I would think that they would have a great time talking about the “business” and I bet that they would help each other when needed!

I have the recording of Clay and Hannah singing David Foster’s The Prayer at The Easter Bonnet Competition.  It is amazing, even with the laughter for the roller skater!

Hannah has certainly had a successful career on both the stage and on the screen, and her current role will  surely raise her profile even further. Watch out at the next awards ceremony!

I am including two videos of Hannah.   The first is the amazing performance of The Prayer with Clay Aiken.  The second is the sjow stopping song that Hannah performs in The wizard of Oz.

Clay Aiken – Do You Know David Foster?

By musicfan123 · Comments 11174(7)http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F2011%2F07%2F30%2Fclay-aiken-do-you-know-david-foster-2%2FClay+Aiken+-+Do+You+Know+David+Foster%3F2011-07-30+15%3A57%3A47musicfan123http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F%3Fp%3D11174
Saturday, July 30th, 2011

If you are a fan of music, you have probably heard the name David Foster. If you are a fan of Clay Aiken, you probably know that Clay and David are friends, colleagues and family. But, do you know all about David Foster? He has built an incredible musical career over the last 40 years.

Born and raised on Vancouver Island, British Columbia David became engrossed at age five, in playing the piano. Just eight years later he enrolled in the University of Washington’s music program. At 16, he joined Chuck Berry’s back-up band. Soon, he was asked to join Cat Stevens for a tour around the world, but decided to turn it down because he was homesick.

In 1971, David relocated to Los Angeles with his group “Skylark”. The group was a one-hit wonder when their song “Wildflower” became a hit. It wasn’t long before David became a sought-after sessions keyboardist. He appeared on many recordings from stars like Diana Ross, Barbra Streisand, Rod Stewart and John Lennon.

In 1976, Foster started his production career, writing and producing songs for many well-known musical artists. In 1979, he earned his first Grammy Award for writing “After the Love Has Gone” for Earth,Wind and Fire.

According to David’s website, “he… has won fifteen Grammy Awards (three for producer of the year) and has been nominated a total of forty-three times. He has been nominated three times for an Academy Award for Best Song and won the 1999 Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song for the song “The Prayer” from the film Quest for Camelot sung by Andrea Bocelli and Celine Dion. He has been named BMI’s Songwriter of the Year.”

In 1995, Foster became the recipient of the Order of British Columbia, the highest honor awarded in his native province of British Columbia. Foster became an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2006.

Many people feel that Foster’s greatest gift to the world is his ability to recognize and nurture new singing talent. Celine Dion was a French-Canadian child prodigy who didn’t start learning English until she was 18. The Corrs is an Irish family band and Josh Groban was a 17-year-old LA kid whom Foster first heard on a tape sent by a voice coach. Michael Buble was the son of a Canadian fisherman who was fond of “forties stuff.”

Although David has a highly commercial artist roster, he is not always a favorite of the “hip” group, including many music critics. He is not interested in music snobs and continues to produce popular music for the “everyman.” Foster admits that his appeal is his romantic music, and he knows it will never lose its appeal. He realizes that he will never be a rocker. Foster says “I can only be who I am, and who I am is a guy who writes music that people make babies to — and I’m not going to apologize for it.”

The list of musical superstars that have worked with David Foster is pages long. Just a few of the names are: Chicago, Michael Bolton, Michael Jackson, Natalie Cole, Neil Diamond, Anne Murray, Kenny Loggins, Kenny Rogers, and MANY more.

David has written and produced many movie soundtracks. Perhaps one of the best known is The Bodyguard, but there are so many. Do you remember the music to Sleepless in Seattle? Or Made in America? Or St. Elmo’s Fire? He is a 3-time Oscar nominee.

What’s in the future for David Foster?  Well, on Friday, he was just named the new chief at Verve Music Group.  According to The Hollywood Reporter:

Verve is expected to shift its focus to adult contemporary pop, or what David does best, from Groban on down.

Foster is also writing a Broadway musical about “Betty Boop.

David’s personal life has not been easy. He has 3 failed marriages, but is very proud of his five daughters who he feels have turned out all right. He is claustrophobic and would rather walk up 20 flights of stairs than get in an elevator. He also admits to being a workaholic.

In the 40 years of David’s professional career, he looks back with fond memories of all the exciting and unusual things that he has experienced. He jokes that he remembers it all because he never got into the drug scene that has hurt so many musicians.

In 1986, David Foster established the David Foster Foundation. The purpose of the foundation is to assist families with children in need of organ transplants. The foundation has raised millions of dollars. David spends much of his free time visiting the families at the hospitals in Western Canada.

David has a lot to be proud of in his life. One can only hope that he will continue to find new talent and produce and write many more hits.

The following are two videos to enjoy. David is certainly a talented and successful man.

By musicfan123 · Comments 10694(7)http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F2011%2F07%2F01%2Fclay-aiken-celebrate-canada-day%2FClay+Aiken+-+Celebrate+Canada+Day2011-07-01+08%3A00%3A38musicfan123http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F%3Fp%3D10694
Friday, July 1st, 2011

Do you know what Canada Day is? It’s Canada’s national day and is a federal holiday celebrating the July 1, 1867 enactment of the British North America Act (now called the Constitution Act 1867). This united two British colonies and a province of the British Empire into a single country called Canada. In French it’s called Fete du Canada.

Canada Day has been called a few names in the past. It used to be known as Dominion Day, the First of July, Confederation Day and July the First. Canada wasn’t born on July 1st, but the holiday celebrates the events that took place on this day.

In 1982, Dominion Day changed to Canada Day after a vote in Parliament. Not everyone was happy about this change. Some people felt that a 115 year-old part of Canadian heritage was lost. But, the new name stuck and every July 1st, Canadians celebrate Canada Day.

Today, Canada Day is celebrated with fireworks, concerts, cookouts, and sports games. Canada’s capital, Ottawa, Ontario, hosts the most holiday activities. There are countless events, activities, and festivals to be found throughout the city in the city streets, parks, and museums. Fireworks are launched from Parliament Hill to conclude a day of patriotic festivities. For more information about Canada Day’s history, click here.

The following are some interesting facts about Canada:

  • Canada was named from the Huron and Iroquois word kanata, which means village.
  • Canada has approximately three million lakes across the country. More than 30,000 of those lakes are larger than three square kilometers.
  • Princess Juliana of the Netherlands gave Ottawa 100,000 tulip bulbs as a thank-you gift in 1945 for keeping the Dutch Royal Family safe during World War II. The Nazis occupied the Netherlands until Canadian soldiers liberated the country in 1944-45.
  • The Bank of Canada issued the last $1 bill in 1989. It was replaced by the one-dollar coin, known as the loonie, which came out in 1987.
  • The world’s only flying saucer launching pad is in St. Paul, Alberta. It was built in 1967.
  • The largest mall in the world is the West Edmonton Mall in Alberta. It has over 800 stores and restaurants, an amusement park, the world’s largest indoor lake with four working submarines, 26 movie theaters and a hockey-sized ice arena.
  • More than 75% of the world’s maple syrup comes from Canada.

Clay Aiken has performed many times in Canada. He was there for the American Idol Tour during Season 2 and he has brought some of his tours to Canada. He also knows Canada because of his close relationship with two Canadian friends, David Foster and Jaymes Foster…. And his son is 1/2 Canadian!!

Clay was a judge for David Foster’s Star Search and was a big hit. The event took place at the River Rock Casino Resort in Redmond, BC on September 9th, 2006. The next night, David hosted the “David Foster and Friends Charity Gala.” Clay Aiken was a performer that night and helped David raise money for his charity by being a part of an auction.

On August 25, 2005, Clay performed at the Molson Amphitheater in Toronto as a part of his Jukebox Tour. It was a huge success!!

We all wish the best to all of our Canadian Friends. Have a wonderful day!!

Quote of the Day

It is not always about performance art, but about receiving positive energy from people with positive spirits. Sometimes we can see someone's spirit, and those are the people with great energy. Those are the people that get me through the day, especially on Broadway. -Clay Aiken
