Clay Aiken – The Tall American With the Freckles

By musicfan123 · Comments 13779(10)http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F2011%2F12%2F27%2Fclay-aiken-the-tall-american-with-the-freckles%2FClay+Aiken+-+The+Tall+American+With+the+Freckles2011-12-27+07%3A22%3A38musicfan123http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F%3Fp%3D13779

On Sunday, 26 December 2004, the greatest earthquake in 40 years occurred about 150 kilometers off the west coast of northern Sumatra Island in Indonesia. The earthquake generated a disastrous tsunami that caused damage in 18 countries and destruction in 11 countries bordering the Indian Ocean.

The death toll count was almost 300,000 people. Over 5 million people were affected by the tsunamis and well over a million were left homeless. Of the fatalities, almost half were in Indonesia with very high casualties in Sri Lanka, India and Thailand as well.

Waves of up to 10.5 meters in height struck Northern Sumatra, the Nicobar and Andaman Islands, Thailand, Sri Lanka, and India. Destructive waves also struck the Maldives, Somalia, Kenya and the islands off the African coast.

Today, a massive international aid effort has rebuilt tens of thousands of homes, schools and roads.

Over 7 billion U.S. Dollars have been provided as humanitarian aid for those affected by the tsunami and as a result many of these regions have recovered sufficiently to provide for their inhabitants. However, there remains much to be done. In Sri Lanka the Tamil Tigers (a guerilla organization) have prevented much of the necessary aid being conveyed to affected people. Throughout Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand fishing villages have been destroyed beyond repair. The occupants of these villages simply have nowhere to go and they still have nothing.

Each year since the tragedy, the communities that have been affected by the Tsunami have had touching memorial services and this year, many of the communities will include candles floating in the ocean as a part of their service.

UNICEF was one of the first organizations to reach the devastated areas. Clay Aiken traveled to Indonesia’s tsunami-ravaged Aceh province the following March. According to the UNICEF site:

He saw firsthand how UNICEF was successfully addressing the physical and emotional needs of children affected by the disaster, and he brought this message of hope back to Congress. The new celebrity ambassador pointed out that the assistance Congress provides to UNICEF in the annual appropriations enables it to be an effective partner of the United States in responding to emergencies like the South Asian tsunami. He testified that the funding provided by Congress to UNICEF is an investment that yields returns for children in jeopardy around the world.

Clay Aiken is an example of an accomplished celebrity who is lending his talent and heart to bring UNICEF’s work to the attention of the decision-makers in Washington. He is among those who truly serve as ambassadors to the legislative leaders who can help make this a world fit for children.

The was a great deal of publicity surrounding Clay’s visit to Indonesia for UNICEF.  Besides the regular entertainment news shows, the information was on many of the regular news shows and printed in many papers throughout the world.  The following are a few of the articles.

Have You Heard? Clay Aiken visits victims of tsunami

By 6NEWS Staff/Associated Press

‘American Idol’ runner-up Clay Aiken, a UNICEF goodwill ambassador, was in Indonesia Monday visiting areas struck by last December’s tsunami.

Aiken was in Aceh province, Indonesia talking with Acehnese children during his visit.

The death toll in Indonesia alone has grown to more than 115,000, and is possibly as high as 166,320, according to some government officials.

Most deaths were in the Aceh province, which includes Meulaboh. The tsunamis wiped some areas of the shoreline clean, leaving only the foundations of homes.

Aiken is a UNC-Charlotte graduate and runner up on the 2003 edition of American Idol.

Clay Aiken, American Idol runner-up, has begun his debut tour in Indonesia this week. But rather than performing any songs, he was visiting the tsunami-ravaged province of Aceh as an ambassador for the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

He said his mission as an ambassador was to help children, with or without disabilities, in many areas like those hit by natural disaster, or in war-torn areas, to have access to basic needs like clean water, nutrition or other activities like education.

He sits on his haunches in front of an adorable, grubby little Acehnese boy who is singing his heart out to a happy children’s song. This little boy was most likely orphaned by the tsunami which swept his homeland leaving hundreds of thousands of people dead, injured and homeless, but the UNICEF Ambassador from America sees in this child’s smiling face that all is not lost, there is still the joy of childhood present in his smile despite the devastating trauma he has suffered.

The tall American with the freckles and rimless glasses stands, sings and dances to a local song with the schoolchildren, waving his arms and moving his body enthusiastically to the hastily learned lyrics in a language of which he had no previous knowledge. He smiles joyously-eliciting similar expressions from the children whose voices sing their happy song with him.

When I look back and remember, it reminds me of how very lucky I am. It also makes me very proud to be a fan of Clay Aiken. After all, this is the kind of thing that I expect when I think about Clay!

Have you ever watched the television show, The Insider?  Considered a news program that has become tabloid television, The Insider covers the news, celebrities and events in the entertainment field.

Clay Aiken has been a frequent visitor to The Insider.  According to what I have found, Clay has been featured on the show 45 times.  The show appeared to like Clay and it seemed that Clay enjoyed talking to Pat O’Brien, the original host of the show.  Lara Spencer also interviewed Clay when he was in New York.

The following pictures are only a few of the available pictures of Clay when he was on The Insider.  Do you remember any of these visits?

The Insider always supported Clay when he traveled for UNICEF.

On January 4, 2005,  Clay was featured as he talked about how we all could help Indonesia.

On April 5, 2005, The Insider covered Clay’s trip to Indonesia

The Insider visited Clay backstage at the Joyful Noise Tour on October 31, 2005

SMILE…On August 21, 2006 The Insider featured the ATDW photo shoot.  They showed many great shots of the photographer and Clay.

Look at some of the screen cap messages from The Insider

These are only a few of the pictures from The Insider.  I am certainly glad that they enjoyed having Clay on their program.  Those pictures are so much fun to see!!  Which one is your favorite?

Through Universal Music’s Indonesian Facebook, it was announced that Tried & True was officially released this past week in Indonesia.  It was just a few weeks ago that Clay Aiken’s song, It’s Impossible, was found on the radio charts in Indonesia.

Indonesia is home to over 234 million people, making it the fourth most populous nation in the world.  This large population is spread out over 17,508 islands that stretch over five thousand miles along the equator.   It is a diverse and unique country with many cultures.  Yet, just as their national motto says, Indonesia and its people have found “unity in diversity.”

Clay Aiken visited Indonesia in 2004 as an Ambassador for UNICEF.  He visited Banda Aceh after the devastating tsunami hit the northern tip of the country.

It would be wonderful if Clay could make a return visit to the country and perhaps even give a concert in Jakarta, the capitol of Indonesia.

I am still thinking about the wonderful speech that Clay Aiken gave at the Key Club Convention.  Clay is certainly a wonderful spokesperson for UNICEF and children all over the world.

We have been so lucky to see many wonderful pictures of the trips that Clay has taken in his role as Ambassador Aiken.  I hope the pictures will remind you of what a excellent person Clay Aiken is.

On 12/26/04, an earthquake in the Indian Ocean caused a tsunami that left more than 122,000 dead and about 114,000 missing in Banda Aceh.  On 3/14/05, Clay Aiken visited Banda Aceh, Indonesia. He was there as a Goodwill UNICEF ambassador to help bring awareness to the tsunami ravaged area.

While touring Indonesia three months after the tsunami devastated vast areas of  South Asia, Clay witnessed and participated in UNICEF programs that helped children reconnect with their families, provided care for orphans, allowed children to return to school and helped prevent the spread of disease.

On April 5th, 2005, Clay was interviewed by Victoria Recando in the TV show, “The Insider.”  Besides chatting with Clay, Victoria showed a personal video diary of Clay as he visited the Banda Aceh.

The following video is from the Insider on April 5th.

Clay Aiken’s Indonesian Trip-2005

By musicfan123 · Comments 2942(18)http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F2009%2F03%2F13%2Fclay-aikens-indonesian-trip-2005%2FClay+Aiken%27s+Indonesian+Trip-20052009-03-14+07%3A06%3A38musicfan123http%3A%2F%2Fwww.claynewsnetwork.com%2F%3Fp%3D2942
Friday, March 13th, 2009

On March 14, 2005, Clay Aiken who is an ambassador for UNICEF, toured the tsunami-ravaged Indonesian province of Aceh.  This was Clay’s first trip as an ambassador for UNICEF.

“The trip was for fact-finding purposes.  There are citizens in the U.S. who have offered their time, effort, money and resources,” Clay told the Jakarta Post.  “There are some who try to find out where their money is going, what type of work is being done.”

On December 26, 2004, an undersea earthquake occurred.  The epicenter was off the west coast of Sumatra, Indonesia.  The earthquake triggered a series of devastating tsunami along the coast of the Indian Ocean.  People were killed in eleven countries and coastal communities were hit by waves up to 100 feet high.  The earthquake was the longest in duration ever observed and lasted somewhere between 8 to 10 minutes.  It caused the entire planet to vibrate and triggered earthquakes as far away as Alaska.

The most recent analysis compiled by the United Nations lists a total of 229,866 people lost.  It was also reported that one-third of the dead were children.

While Clay was in Indonesia, he participated in UNICEF programs that helped children in many ways. Some of these important programs included helping children to reconnect with their families, caring for orphans, preventing the spread of disease and assisting children in returning to school.

According to an Indonesian news source, Clay spent an afternoon with about 100 children from Lampuuk Beach.  The children were housed at a refuge camp and they greeted him with songs.  It was reported that Clay sat and chatted with some of the children and tried to get them to laugh.

Clay was accompanied by Ferry Salim who is a local celebrity and a UNICEF ambassador.  He reported that Clay learned quickly to sing a children’s song in the Indonesian language.  The song ‘di Sini Senang, di Sana Senang’ translates to “happiness everywhere” and is a popular Indonesian nursery song.

Salim reported that Clay accompanied some children to therapy and seemed to show great empathy for the children.  Clay said that it was important that the children get back to their known routine and that getting back to school on a daily basis was most important.

While Clay was in Indonesia, UNICEF distributed 4100 school-in-a-box tools and 1700 packages of games.  They planned on sending 200 teachers to Aceh a soon as possible.

UNICEF has many celebrity Ambassadors who donate time and money to many causes throughout the world.  They are lucky to have Clay Aiken on their team.

The following is a video of two  interviews Clay did about his trip to Indonesia.  The first is a UNICEF interview and the next is from WRAL.

Quote of the Day

It is not always about performance art, but about receiving positive energy from people with positive spirits. Sometimes we can see someone's spirit, and those are the people with great energy. Those are the people that get me through the day, especially on Broadway. -Clay Aiken
