Clay Aiken – Stepping Up To The Plate For UNICEF

By musicfan123 · Comments 10251(10)http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F2011%2F03%2F22%2Fclay-aiken-stepping-up-to-the-plate-for-unicef%2FClay+Aiken+-+Stepping+Up+To+The+Plate+For+UNICEF2011-03-22+07%3A20%3A14musicfan123http%3A%2F%2Fwww.claynewsnetwork.com%2F%3Fp%3D10251
Tuesday, March 22nd, 2011

On November 15, 2004, Clay Aiken appeared on Larry King Live for an exclusive interview. This was the night that Clay announced he had been asked by UNICEF to be one of their goodwill ambassadors. His said his focus would be on educational issues, a great fit for Clay who had attended college to become a Special education teacher.

Since this time, Clay has been an active part of UNICEF, visiting many countries, including Indonesia, Somalia, Afghanistan and Mexico.  He also was the National Spokesperson for the 2005 Trick or Treat For UNICEF program, bringing in over $18.25 million.  In 2006, Clay helped light the UNICEF snowflake in New York City.

Today, as we look at the disaster in Japan, it is reassuring to know that UNICEF is again, stepping up to the plate and helping the traumatized children who are victims of a triple play in Japan.

On March 17th, UNICEF announced that the U.S. Fund for UNICEF is raising funds to help children in Japan impacted by the recent earthquake and tsunami.  Because of the unprecedented nature of the epic disaster and its impact on children, resources are going to be critical in helping provide for the very unique needs of children that include education, health, development, protection and other needs that have been compromised or disrupted in the wake of this catastrophe.

The following was posted on the UNICEF website:

UNICEF, together with other UN agencies, will be providing essential services in the days ahead to those affected by the catastrophe in Japan.  The U.S. Fund for UNICEF is raising funds to provide targeted assistance on the fround, where it is needed most.  This assistance will include essential items such as diapers and hygiene kits.  Other supplies will likely include recreational materials and educational items like “school-in-a-box” in preparation for the new school year beginning in early April.

Clay Aiken has many fans in Japan and many other fans that have relatives in Japan.  Those of us who can, need to step up and do whatever we can to help the children of Japan.  Please visit UNICEF and find out how you can help.

On November 15, 2004, Clay Aiken was a guest on the Larry King Live television show.  Clay was the exclusive guest for the first half of the show that was broadcast on CNN.

Clay and Larry discussed many topics, including Clay’s book, his new Christmas CD and his Christmas special.

Larry teased the audience by saying that Clay had a big announcement to share on the show…

The huge announcement was pretty spectacular.  Clay had been asked by UNICEF to be one of their goodwill ambassadors.  Because of Clay’s experience as a teacher, Clay’s focus for UNICEF would be on educational issues.

I remember when Clay made this exciting announcement.  I was so proud of Clay and realized what a difference Clay was going to make in the world.

It’s been a few years so I have included videos of the show.  I hope you enjoy them.

Clay Aiken – He Has A Way With Words

Friday night, April 23rd………….most of Clay Aiken’s fans thought that they would be seeing Clay on TV.  It had been announced that Clay would be a guest on the Larry King Live show.  But, within hours of announcing Clay would be a guest, “Team Clay “ announced by twitter and FaceBook that the visit was off.

For whatever reason the show was pulled off of Clay’s calendar, we can only hope that he is healthy and just decided that it was not an appearance he wanted to make.

It’s been a long time since Clay has made an appearance on TV.  To take away some of the disappointment, I have posted some videos of Clay visiting with Larry King on September 27, 2006.  Clay and Larry held a 50-minute interview and touched on a variety of topics, including panic attacks, rumors and the price of fame……..oh yes…..they also covered the release of Clay’s album, A Thousand Different Ways.

There are two conversations in this interview that made me laugh.  The first is about Ryan Seacrest.  Poor Larry…he didn’t have a clue!!

KING: Ryan Seacrest sends his best by the way.

AIKEN: Oh, good.

KING: We spoke to him today.

AIKEN: Oh, good.

KING: He was very good to you.

AIKEN: Oh, was he? That’s nice.

KING: Wasn’t he?

AIKEN: He’s always — oh, he’s always very good to us, yes. We loved him.

The second chuckle came from this short conversation.

AIKEN: How did the panic attack thing start?

KING: The rumors start?

AIKEN: I don’t know. I really have no idea. I mean I think that…

KING: One piece, somebody wrote something do you remember how it…

AIKEN: I really don’t know. I mean I stopped paying attention. I think the first time actually my first memory of you, Larry, it was the first time I was on your show right after Idol and I was in a satellite with Ruben from New York and you were here and you said something about the National Enquirer and how there was some story in the Enquirer. It was the first time I had heard about it. And I went, “Oh, I thought Larry was nice. What’s this all about?” I had no idea.

KING: I’m nice.

AIKEN: Yes, you are but I didn’t — I didn’t have any idea what it was about. And at that point I think someone had said that I had said that the show was rigged or something preposterous like that. And, of course, somebody I’d never heard of. I think people get bored and they decide to make these stories up.

Listening to Clay Aiken in an interview is an amazing time.  Even when the person asking the questions is looking for a scoop, Clay has a way of answering that is polite but gets his point across.

I know that you all would rather have 2010 Clay, but these videos are the best I can do.

Clay Aiken and Jennifer Knapp

By musicfan123 · Comments 9189(5)http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F2010%2F04%2F23%2Fclay-aiken-and-jennifer-knapp%2FClay+Aiken+and+Jennifer+Knapp2010-04-23+07%3A44%3A08musicfan123http%3A%2F%2Fwww.claynewsnetwork.com%2F%3Fp%3D9189
Friday, April 23rd, 2010

It was announced yesterday on many websites that Clay Aiken would be a guest on Larry King Live tonight.  Larry is interviewing Jennifer Knapp and has asked Clay to join in the discussion.  I knew very little about Jennifer, but after reading about her, I found her to be a fascinating young lady who is a Christian and just happens to be gay.  It is amazing that Jennifer and Clay have so much in common.   It would be interesting to hear a bit of their interaction with each other.  It certainly seems like they would understand each other and the ups and downs of their lives.

Jennifer Knapp was a rising star on the Christian music scene a few years ago, but in 2003 she simply vanished leaving fans to wonder where she had gone.  There were many theories as to why Knapp disappeared.  Rumors began to swirl—she was burned out, she needed a rest, she was upset about something, she was gay. Turns out that all the rumors were true.

In an interview with Relevant magazine, Knapp said:

“It was definitely time for a break. I was touring Lay It Down while recording The Way I Am, and then went directly into touring that record. It got to where I was just doing shows to support the record, rather than having a record support the heart of the people I was supposed to be serving. I don’t want to make and tour another record just because that’s what people expect, or because ‘it’s about that time.’”

Knapp quit the industry and moved to Australia, she said, because she was simply exhausted by all the performing and unprepared for the challenges being a music star brought her way.

At the time of her break from music, Jennifer was not sure if she would return to the field.  But Jennifer is back onto the music scene.  She has a new album that will be released in May and she has announced that she has been in a same-sex relationship for the last eight years.

The Christian music scene has been rocked by this announcement.  Knapp, who is a very private person, said that she is not surprised by the reaction.

“I’m aware that the evangelical community has problems with divorce and many other facets of their artists, let alone homosexuality,” Knapp said. “I really felt a strong obligation to be able to address that because for many people, it was really clear that they wouldn’t participate in buying a record because it was against their beliefs.”

“For many people who buy Christian music or have been familiar with me and my writings as a person of faith, I felt like it was the honest thing to do.  The last thing I wanted to do was to have someone go out and buy a record and feel like they had been hoodwinked.”

Knapp is a 36-year-old Kansas native and dated men during her college days.  She says she is ready for a backlash from religious fans that faithfully shot down whispered rumors about her sexuality over the years. On the other hand, she said in a recent interview with Reuters, “I’m definitely getting a lot more friendly winks from the girls (at her concerts) than I have in the past!”

Before Knapp met her girlfriend in the United States, she was celibate for 10 years, which she says is in line with the general expectation for unmarried members of the evangelical community.

“Anyone who has a decade of celibacy has ‘complete loser’ written on their back,” she joked, although she still respects those who do abstain.

Mark Moring is the senior associate editor for Christianity Today.  He was one of the first to interview Knapp and write about sexual revelation.  He told CNN that

“it has been extremely polarizing among his publication’s audience. People have vacillated between anger that Christianity Today would even write the story and praise for Knapp’s honesty.

“There are people who will always love Jennifer Knapp, no matter what decisions she may make. I think the word that I’ve read the most often [among those commenting on the Christianity Today web site] is ‘sad’ as in ‘I’m sad that she has made this choice, but I still love her music.’ I think that has been a recurrent theme.”

Rev. DL Foster is the founder of the Gay Christian Movement Watch Web site and said he believes as society has become more accepting of homosexuality, Knapp and other artists are finding it easier to go public.

“For a person to try and combine [being gay and being a Christian music artist] is not biblically correct, and I would hope that the church would reject such music because it does not represent us,” he said. “To me, it doesn’t matter if you are openly gay or closeted gay, sin is still sin.”

Knapp has made it clear that she is no longer marketing herself as a Christian artist.  She is no longer on a Christian-based record label and her new album is made up of folksy rock songs that are about “inner-conflicts, spirituality and life lessons.”

Knapp’s new sexual identity is clearly a major talking point, but she does not view herself as a crusader in the gay community. She jealously guards her privacy and that of her girlfriend, who “doesn’t want to be famous in any way whatsoever at all.”

At the end of her interview with CNN, Jennifer said that she had always struggled as a person of faith to be the person she wants to be, and her sexuality was only a part of that.  She said in closing:

“God has always known I would walk this path.  I would rather be judged before God as being an honest human being, If I am in any way unpleasing in his sight, I can only hope and pray that he gives me the opportunity to find who I am supposed to be.”

Quote of the Day

It is not always about performance art, but about receiving positive energy from people with positive spirits. Sometimes we can see someone's spirit, and those are the people with great energy. Those are the people that get me through the day, especially on Broadway. -Clay Aiken
