Thursday, July 28th, 2011

It has been four days since Clay Aiken was a guest on the popular television series, Drop Dead Diva.  The episode titled, The Prom,  has received a great deal of publicity.  Taking on a controversial topic, the show combined humor with a relevant subject to help the audience understand the importance of the issue.

Drop Dead Diva is known for using exciting and popular guests in their story-lines.  It was fun to see Clay featured in the last episode.  And the publicity just does not stop.  On Wednesday, Yahoo news ran a great article about Clay…all because of his participation on Drop Dead Diva.

Clay Aiken Defends His Southern Home

By Amy and Nancy Harrington, Pop Culture Passionistas, Yahoo! Contributor Network – July 27, 2011 3:27 PM PDT

This past weekend Clay Aiken appeared in an episode of “Drop Dead Diva” that paralleled the real life story of Constance McMillen. Last year the teenager sued her high school after being banned from her prom, all because she wanted to take her girlfriend as her date. The discriminatory tale sparked outrage around the world and turned a spotlight on equality issues in the South. But Aiken, who recently participated in a conference call interview from Durham, North Carolina, came to the defense of his homestead.

Clay Aiken Defends His Southern Home on the Issue of Equality

The former “American Idol” contestant commented on how gay rights topics are viewed in below the Mason-Dixon line, “As someone who still lives here — I would argue that it may not be as much a regional issue as it is a national issue. Obviously you can argue that there are areas in the county where it might be a little bit easier, but I think that it is a national issue. It’s not necessarily just a Southern thing.”

He continued, “There are plenty of opportunities for us to say that homophobia exists in a certain religious environment more than it does in a secular environment. And while that may be true, it’s not necessarily the rule. I know plenty of Christians who are open-minded and equality loving and I know plenty of Southerners who are the same.”

Aiken theorized, “Because society tends to be a little more insular in the South, if you will, often times it’s a little bit more pronounced here ‘” the homophobia. But I put it this way, I live in an area in the South that is relatively progressive. Raleigh and Durham and most of North Carolina, in fact, is more progressive than I think we are painted.”

Still he acknowledged that there’s room for growth, “I wouldn’t for a second say that the South is ready to embrace equality as much as I’d like for them to, but I would argue that there aren’t that many places in the county that are. And so, I’m a proud Southerner.

Aiken admitted, “I get slightly defensive because I know that there are lots of challenges in the Southeast that still need to be met, but I do see a lot of progress. And it is kids like Constance, shows like ‘Drop Dead Diva’ and plenty of other shows and plenty of other individuals who have stood up.”

Clay Aiken Believes that Gay Rights Will Become More Accepted with Time

The crooner contended that the amount of change he has seen is encouraging. “I think about the fact that from the time that I started in this business, if you want to put it like that, in 2003, the lengths that the entertainment industry has come, the lengths that the country has come in less than 10 years, is amazing.”

But he couldn’t specifically say why that change has come about. Aiken remarked, “I really don’t even know who to credit with it, but I think that there have been a lot of opportunities in the media for positive role models for gay and lesbian young people. And positive examples of gay and lesbian Americans.”

Clay Aiken Cites Ellen DeGeneres and Amanda Bearse for Influencing the Change

He cited a few big names with being trailblazers, noting, “If you look at Ellen DeGeneres as one of the early [celebrities to come out]. Amanda Bearse, who is on the ['Drop Dead Diva' episode 'Prom'] and I think doesn’t get as much credit because she was way, way before it was cool — Way before if was okay, back when she was on ‘Married with Children.’”

Aiken added, “There are people who took a stand and who came out much more courageously early in the late ’90s and 15 years ago. And slowly, as Ellen has gotten a lot of acceptance from the mainstream population, you saw shows like ‘Will and Grace.’”

Clay Aiken Believes that Hollywood Is Helping by Putting a Face to Gay America

He said he feels a sense of hope. “I definitely believe that Hollywood, and I use that as a metonym for the whole entertainment industry, Hollywood and the media in general have put an — accurate face on gays and lesbians, and bisexuals and transgenders in this country, which they didn’t have before. And it’s snowballed in some way. ‘Will and Grace’ was groundbreaking and now it’s rare really to find a show that doesn’t have a gay character in it in some way. And that’s had a lot to do with why people are more comfortable with it.”

Aiken shared his wish that the level of acceptance will continue to grow, “I say all the time if people knew someone who was gay, if they were exposed to it. It’s not about hatred, I don’t think, as much as it is about ignorance. And as the media has allowed more people to be exposed to the fact that this character on this TV show may be gay, but they’re exactly the same as every other character, they just happen to be gay. As we’ve taken away some of those stereotypes — it’s made it a lot easier for people to embrace equality.”

The pop star-turned-actor summed it all by saying, “Fear and ignorance go hand in hand. So as shows like ‘Drop Dead Diva’ and the future ‘Will and Grace’s’ of the world and folks like Ellen DeGeneres and Rosie [O'Donnell] and Neil Patrick Harris, and just anybody in the public eye allow us opportunities to see gays and lesbians having productive families and lives. Those fears will abate for a lot of people and I think it’ll be easier to change some of those laws.”

If you missed Aiken on “Drop Dead Diva,” you can check it out on MyLifetime.com and catch the series when it airs on Sunday nights at 9 p.m. EST/8 p.m. Central on Lifetime.

Why not stop by and leave a comment to let the site know that Clay has lots of support.

Clay Aiken – Film Festival and Twitter

Outfest 2011, LA’s gay and lesbian film festival, opened on Thursday, July 7th with sold out shows and lots of excitement.

During the opening ceremonies on Thursday night, two producers, Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato received the Outfest Achievement Award.  On Saturday, they participated in a discussion about their careers. Actress Tori Spelling moderated the event and was proud that the two award winners had been the producers of her reality series.

On Sunday, a group of directors and producers gave tips on how to raise money to make independent films and shared some of the mistakes they made along the way. Their No. 1 tip was to have a strong business plan to present to potential investors.

Many celebrities are attending the 10-day event that is a celebration of film and television shows.  Besides Spelling, celebrities attending the fest include, Neil Patrick Harris, David Burtka, Margaret Cho, Clay Aiken, Lance Bass, and Kathleen Turner.

The film festival will run through Sunday, July 17, 2011.  For more information, contact the Outfest website.

On Monday, July 11th, Digital Music News ran a short article on musicians and their use of twitter.

The article stated that artists are continually being told to tweet… just to stay connected with their fans and stay relevant. But is twitter really important to musicians? Digital Music News decided to look at some number comparisons.  According to the article:

The answer is not for every artist, especially for those courting a less-mainstream, music-focused crowd.  Even worse, it could be stealing valuable time away from songwriting, touring, collaborating, and other pursuits that form deeper audience connections.

The author looked at the list of the best-selling albums of the year from Nielsen Soundscan.  Then they compared these rankings with the twitter rankings of the recording artists to see if there was a connection between twitter rankings and sales of albums.

The results were rather interesting. For artists like Lady Gaga and Katy Perry, this is part of a broader mainstream marketing blitz.  For others outside of mainstream pop that are breaking through, constant Twittering frankly seems like a waste of time. The following chart is from Digital Music News.

Many fans of Clay Aiken have been concerned that Clay does not use twitter.  Perhaps Clay knows more than we give him credit for.

What do you think?  Do you think using twitter is a good idea for musicians or is it a needless waste of time?

Clay Aiken – New York, New York!

By musicfan123 · Comments 10645(11)http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F2011%2F06%2F27%2Fclay-aiken-new-york-new-york-2%2FClay+Aiken+-+New+York%2C+New+York%212011-06-27+07%3A45%3A45musicfan123http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F%3Fp%3D10645
Monday, June 27th, 2011

Late Friday night, the state of New York legalized same-sex marriage. With a historic vote by its Legislature, New York became the sixth, and by far the most populous state to legalize same-sex marriage. Governor Andrew Cuomo signed the bill into law Friday night.  He said:

I am very proud of New York and I’m very proud of the statement we made today.

Same-sex couples will be able to get married by the end of July, as the law will go into effect in 30 days.

More than 35% of Americans now live in states where gay couples can effectively attain the rights and responsibilities of marriage.

According to The Associated Press, several recent opinion polls have shown that a majority of Americans now approve of same-sex marriages.  It was only 10 years ago that there was less than 40% support.

Sometimes it is important to look at some of the people who are affected by this new legislation.  It certainly makes it easier to understand why this is so important.

Meet Richard Dorr, 84, left, and John Mace, 91, at their home in New York City where they both work as voice teachers. They have been partners for 61 years, and have been hoping that legislation passes that would enable them to get married in New York.  They plan to seek a marriage license as soon as possible but do not plan a big ceremony…just a couple of witnesses and a justice of the peace.

One of New York’s most famous gay couples is Neil Patrick Harris and his longtime partner, David Burtka.  On Friday night, Harris tweeted words of encouragement to the State Senate.  He wrote that he’d “sure love to get married.”

Harris followed up on Saturday morning with another tweet that said:

“David and I did propose to each other, but over five years ago! We’ve been wearing engagement rings for ages, waiting for an available date.”

It only makes sense that the pair should be allowed to marry.  They have been together for many years and they are fathers to fraternal twins born in October 2010.

On Sunday, Ben Cohn posted a touching picture of himself and his long-time partner, Sean McDaniel…the important word…”engaged.”  These two young people have their entire life ahead of them and now they can share it with someone they love and adore and have all the rights that we all have.  Ben and Sean have performed and toured often with Clay Aiken.  They are both outstanding musicians and seem like great people.  I bet they got a mighty big “Congratulations” from Clay!

I saw a wonderful post from an active Clay fan on Sunday.  She commented that she wished that there was a way for Clay to know and understand that he has made a huge impact when it comes to GLBT rights.  She related that it was so much fun to see the celebration on the Clay-Boards and even FaceBook when the news of the Marriage Equality Bill passed.  She said:

I’m sure some of those people would have been following it anyway, but it would be my guess that most of them would not be following this particular movement if it were not for Clay. He has led the way for people to get educated on this cause, to support the cause and to celebrate the victories and agonize over the defeats. He did that and I wish he could see it.

It is always great to read positive things about Clay Aiken. On Monday, the fun website, Your Tango, published an article titled,  “6 Coolest Gay Celebrity Dads. From Neil Patrick Harris to Clay Aiken, these dads aren’t shy about embracing fatherhood.”

Kayda Norman, the writer of the article said the following about Clay:

Clay Aiken. Though the former American Idol contestant may not have been quite as vocal about fatherhood as others on this list, the birth of his son did give him courage to come out of the closet.

“I cannot raise a child to lie or to hide things. I wasn’t raised that way, and I’m not going to raise a child to do that,” Clay said (via People.com), about a month after his son was born.

And rather than go the route of adoption or surrogate, the singer and his good friend Jaymes Foster used artificial insemination to bring about son Parker Foster Aiken. More than anything, Clay strives to raise his son in a loving environment, which, in our opinion, makes him one of the coolest dads out there.

Thank you, Kayda for writing an article that is both accurate and respectful.  Be sure and visit the site to read then entire article and be sure and leave a comment to let Kayda know you appreciate her article.  Cool Dads

Clay Aiken – American Idol Judges

By musicfan123 · Comments 6160(18)http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F2009%2F09%2F05%2Fclay-aiken-american-idol-judges%2FClay+Aiken+-+American+Idol+Judges2009-09-05+13%3A46%3A36musicfan123http%3A%2F%2Fwww.claynewsnetwork.com%2F%3Fp%3D6160

The preliminary rounds of auditions for American Idol, Season 9, will be different from the past seasons.  Because of the departure of Paula Abdul, the producers of American Idol have opted for having celebrity judges at the judges table.

The list of guest judges is excellent.  They include Tony Award winner, Kristin Chenoweth and this years Tony Awards host Neil Patrick Harris.  Other announced judges are Victoria Beckham, Mary J. Blige, Joe Jonas, Katy Perry and Shania Twain. Each one of these guest judges is active in the entertainment industry at this time and should be able to add some suggestions and advice to the contestants.

The guest judges will join Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson and Kara DioGuardi at the judges table.  Ryan Seacrest will still be hosting the show.

Although the guest judges are all highly qualified, many people believe that Paula Abdul will be missed on the show.  Although she has always been a bit “flighty”, she played an important role in the 8 years of American Idol.

What do you think?  Do you think the celebrity judges will be good?  Will Paula be missed?  Please share your thoughts!

Clay Aiken – Will He Attend the Tony Awards?

By musicfan123 · Comments 4906(16)http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F2009%2F06%2F07%2Fclay-aiken-will-he-attend-the-tony-awards%2FClay+Aiken+-+Will+He+Attend+the+Tony+Awards%3F2009-06-07+14%3A10%3A55musicfan123http%3A%2F%2Fwww.claynewsnetwork.com%2F%3Fp%3D4906
Sunday, June 7th, 2009

Neil Patrick Harris will host the 63rd annual Tony Awards tonight, June 7th. This year’s ceremony will be held in Radio City Music Hall and will be televised by CBS. There will be a star-studded list of presenters, such as Anne Hathaway, Nicole Kidman, Jessica Lange, Frank Langella, David Hyde Pierce and Kevin Spacey.

Early reports indicate that “Billy Elliott The Musical” will be the big winner at the end of the night.

Viewers can expect a spectacular night of Broadway styled performances.  There will be 3 hours of songs, dance, drama and impressive talent……….and a small amount of time devoted to the awards.

This year, the Tony’s are going for a different style.  They want this show to introduce the Broadway talent to the television audience so they have opted to present the technical and design awards before the televised show.  They also will give out some performance awards before the show too.  This has outraged many of the Broadway family who feel too many talented people are not getting the recognition that they should.

With the design awards out of sight from the television audience, there is now more room for not only performances by the nominated musicals, but also the touring companies of Jersey Boys, Mamma Mia and Legally Blonde. Since the audience will seeing the casts from the actual production coming to your town, most feel it is a push to – buy your tickets now!

Making the Tony Awards nothing but musical number after musical number is a ratings ploy helping not only viewership, but ticket sales. But many critics wonder if performances by top stars like Dolly Parton and Elton John are needed to ensure people tuning in on Sunday night.  Will it ensure that there will be more than the usual audience watching the Tony’s?  That question will be answered Monday morning.

Many people are complaining that without the observation of the presentation of the awards, the Tony Awards will just become a show filled with fluff.  Most diehard Broadway lovers love the tributes to actors, dancers and composers who are not the popular stars and they love to cheer and cry or the accolades they get at the Tony’s.  But, it seems that does not make good TV.

For Clay Aiken fans, the question is not who will win, but will Clay attend the ceremony.  And, most of his fans are cheering on Christopher Sieber who has been nominated for “Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical.”  Congratulations, Christopher, for your nomination.  We hope that you walk away with the trophy.

Quote of the Day

It is not always about performance art, but about receiving positive energy from people with positive spirits. Sometimes we can see someone's spirit, and those are the people with great energy. Those are the people that get me through the day, especially on Broadway. -Clay Aiken
