Clay Aiken – An Incredible Night

Ever since MTV opened its TRL studio windows onto Times Square, MTV has staged a huge New Year’s Eve special. To some, it was a surprise since Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve is just down the block. But to Mike Powers, the executive producer in 2003/2004, it was just a perfect setting.

Clay Aiken was one of the featured musical guests at the MTV New Year’s Eve celebration in 2003. Clay sang two songs. His first performance was Invisible. He sang in the New Year with a romantic rendition of The Way.

The celebration was hosted by MTV’s Damien, La La, Vanessa, Quddus, Hilarie, Sway, and Suchin. The special guest co-host was Hilary Duff.

Joining Clay as part of the musical entertainment was Chingy, Ludacris, Hilary Duff, and Simple Plan.

Clay was interviewed a couple of times during the evening and somehow, it seemed he was always outside in the cold wind. It must have been an incredible night, seeing and hearing the huge crowds in Time Square.

Looking at all the names listed in this article, I wonder…….where are all these people today? I must be really “out of it” as I haven’t heard anything positive about any of those people, except Clay Aiken, of course.

Rapper Chingy has been involved in multiple lawsuits and he has changed his music label numerous times. His last CD hit the 84th place on the Billboard Charts.

Ludacris has been arrested for public brawling and has been involved in many lawsuits and feuds with different people. He was very crude and vocal with his comments during the 2008 election. No one wanted him on their side.

Hilary Duff has recorded three albums, plus two “best of” albums. She was accused of “stealing’ music from Depeche Mode on her latest album. She left her label and seems to be concentrating on her acting career. Hillary was married in 2010 and is expecting her first child soon.

Damien is currently the co-host of “I’m A Celebrity…..Get Me Out Of Here.” I don’t think anything else needs to be said.

Then there is Clay Aiken. In the last few years, he starred on Broadway, had a PBS Special, continues to work with UNICEF as an Ambassador, runs a successful charity that supports children and is not afraid to speak his mind when he sees injustices in the world. Oh, did I mention his successful albums, tours and TV appearances??

I found the following video on YouTube. It shows a lot of what Clay did on New Year’s Eve, 2003.

Clay Aiken – What Were You Doing In 1968?

By musicfan123 · Comments 12713(12)http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F2011%2F10%2F24%2Fclay-aiken-what-were-you-doing-in-1968%2FClay+Aiken+-+What+Were+You+Doing+In+1968%3F2011-10-24+07%3A08%3A20musicfan123http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F%3Fp%3D12713

What were you doing in 1968?  If you were around at that time, you probably heard one of the biggest pop music hits of the year.  Written by Mike d’Abo and Tony Macaulay, the song was released by The Foundations.

Do you know what song I am talking about?  Well, Clay Aiken sang it on American Idol and then blamed Ben Cohn for the “high” range of the song on his PBS Special….yes!  It is Build Me Up Buttercup.

“Buttercup” reached the number 2 spot on the UK charts and the number 3 spot on the Billboard 100.  It was on the Billboard chart for 11 weeks.

Younger music fans were probably introduced to Build Me Up Buttercup when it was included in the 1998 film, There’s Something About Mary.  The actors of the film actually made a video of the song.  All the main actors mimed the words in the character of their role in the movie.

For some reason The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim play “Buttercup” during the seventh-inning stretch. Of course, it is played after Take Me Out To The Ballgame.  The crowd sings along and seems to enjoy the song.

On April 29, 2003, Clay Aiken sang Build Me Up Buttercup on American Idol.   It was the Top 5 show and the first time each contestant sang two songs on the same night.  Neil Sedaka was the celebrity judge for the evening.

Clay’s rendition of the song was a fan favorite so it was included on Clay’s PBS Special, titled Tried & True, Live!  The talented Ben Cohn wrote the arrangement of the song that made Clay work the upper range of his voice.  Clay received a standing ovation for the performance at the live concert.

The talented SueReu put together another fabulous video, combining many different Clay performances of “Buttercup”.  Any time we get a SueReu video we know we are in for a treat.  ENJOY!!

And lets hope we hear something (anything) about Clay and his adventure in New York!!

Making An Entrance:  commonly refers to entrances that are particularly prominent or attention-grabbing.

Certainly, Clay Aiken knows how to make an entrance.  Whether it is an entrance to the stage on a TV show, the entrance from the back of the arena as he opened the show singing Kyrie, or just the stance that was so professionally lit at the beginning of his PBS special, Clay always puts that attention-getting spark into his emergence to the stage!

The following are a few of Clay’s arrivals to the stage.  Which one is your favorite?

Clay Aiken – Can You Imagine Millions Watching?

By musicfan123 · Comments 10723(21)http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F2011%2F07%2F03%2Fclay-aiken-can-you-imagine-millions-watching%2FClay+Aiken+-+Can+You+Imagine+Millions+Watching%3F2011-07-03+07%3A17%3A18musicfan123http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F%3Fp%3D10723

Can you imagine what it must be like to sing for a live audience of over a half a million people as well as millions watching on TV? Well, this was a reality that Clay Aiken experienced on July 4, 2004.

From the west lawn of the Capitol, Clay joined a cast of some of the country’s best-known and award-winning musical artists in the PBS concert called A Capitol Fourth. Featuring patriotic classics as well as pop and country favorites, it was a night that got the audience on their feet and dancing to the beat of the fabulous music.

The concert was hosted by veteran actor and singer Barry Bostwick and, besides Clay, featured Nashville superstars Vince Gill and Amy Grant, legendary Bee Gees member Robin Gibb, and gospel legend Yolanda Adams. There was also a special 150th birthday salute to famed American composer and conductor John Philip Sousa, whose “Stars and Stripes Forever” has become a tradition on Independence Day. The soloists all joined the internationally renowned National Symphony Orchestra, directed by Erich Kunzel.

Clay started off the concert by singing The Star Spangled Banner with the symphony. According to the reviews, it was an outstanding rendition of our national anthem.

Later in the program, Barry Bostwick, who was very glowing in his praise of Clay and his relatively short musical career, introduced Clay. Measure of A Man was appropriately chosen as Clay’s first feature song. He sang it with a lot of emotion and the cameras showed close-ups of our brave service men and women who were a part of the audience. It was a very moving performance. Clay closed his part of the program by singing God Bless The USA, a patriotic song that was strong and dynamic.

Heard live in stereo over National Public Radio, A Capitol Fourth was broadcast to U.S. military personnel in more than 135 countries by the American Forces Radio and Television Network.

A Capitol Fourth in 2004 was a birthday party to our nation and a July 4th tradition much like hot dogs, watermelon and fireworks. It was a wonderful evening of musical entertainment that was topped off by an exciting display of fireworks over the Washington Monument.

The following videos show the Clay Aiken parts of the concert.

As we all take time to celebrate the anniversary of the beginning of our nation, CANN hopes that you enjoy some time with family and friends while remembering what a privilege it is to be an American.  Happy 4th of July and thanks for all your support.

I will be celebrating the Holiday with my family so this blog is our July 4th week-end entry.

We will be back on Tuesday, July 5th!

Clay Aiken – The Midway Point

Clay Aiken and his group of fabulous musicians shined brightly Wednesday night as they performed at the Blumenthal PAC in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Clay must have felt right at home as he stepped on the stage and saw the many familiar and friendly faces in the audience.  Among the audience were Clay’s mother and Grandmother, Diane and Emma Bubel, and even a long time school chum named Audra.  She was introduced to us in Clay’s book, ”Learning To Sing”.   Among the full auditorium, there were many friends, old and new, and fans from throughout the country.

The Charlotte concert marks the midway point of the Tried and True concert.  The 22-city tour closes on March 12th in San Francisco, California.

On Wednesday, there was another group of wonderful articles about Clay and the Tried & True Tour.  Each one was positive and even though the headline was written to attract attention (as it should), had nothing but praise for Clay and his music

James Grant is a feature writer for Fort Wayne.com.  This is a part of the News-Sentinel in Fort Wayne, Indiana.  James conducted a wonderful telephone interview with Clay about his up-coming concert on March 2nd, at the Embassy Theatre in Fort Wayne.  Clay talked about the PBS special that was filmed last March.

“We’re doing it a little bit differently from the PBS special, just to kind of give us some flexibility in the music we do, … (and) the order we do it in,” Aiken said in a telephone interview.

“The PBS special was such a big production itself; in order to take that on the road, you kind of lose some of the intimacy that I like to have in the show … . It’s the same vibe, it’s the same sound, but it’s not going to look exactly the same.”

While the PBS concert was a big production, more important to Aiken was the fact the show was shot in his hometown of Raleigh, N.C., in front of family, friends and people who made an impact on his life.

“I had about 15 to 20 teachers who had taught me at various grades all the way from second grade up to senior year, college actually,” Aiken said. “I had one teacher from every grade except for first and kindergarten who were at the show. That was probably the neatest thing, to be able to do it (the PBS concert) in the theater that I grew up seeing shows in and had not performed in before or had not performed in since ‘Idol’ at all.”

Please visit the article by Mr. Grant and the entire article.  He has also included a link to the phone interview with Clay.  You can read the article at FORTWAYNE.COM

WCNC is News Channel 36, a television station in Charlotte, North Carolina.  Clay appeared in station for a live interview.  The hosts had met and interviewed when he was first on American Idol and seemed to enjoy the conversation with Clay.  The headline is “It’s None of Your Business” as Clay addressed his decision to come out on People Magazine.

“I wasn’t in the closet before,” he said. “I was out to friends here in Charlotte; I was out to pretty much everyone I knew. I feel like there’s a little bit of hypocrisy there. People who are gay who live in Charlotte, who live anywhere else, they don’t have to come out to the world. And I didn’t either. People knew, I had told my family, I’d told friends, people knew but I had not told ‘you’ and it’s none of your business.”

Please visit this wonderful site.  They have the written article, a video of the interview and a great slide show.  You can see this at WCNC

ExploreLI is a part of Newsday, Long Island.  Glenn Gamboa wrote about his interview with Clay.  The Tried and True Tour will make a stop on Long Island on Saturday, February 26th.  The concert will be held at the NYCB Theatre in Westbury, Long Island.

Clay talked on many subjects including his stint on American Idol, his involvement in GLSEN, and his choice of music.  About the record industry, Clay said:

The industry is more interested in immediate hits rather than careers that last.

The music industry has certainly changed.

It’s in the process of reinventing itself and we have to look at things in a different way. A few years ago, you had to have a major label behind you. Now, it doesn’t necessarily behoove you to have one…. just won the Grammy for Album of the Year and they’re on a tiny, tiny label in Durham, near where I’m from and that’s not exactly a music industry Mecca. With everything changing so fast, I don’t think it’s a good idea to be in a long-term deal. It restricts you.

Please visit EXPLORELI and read the entire article by Glenn.  It is an interesting read.

Isn’t it wonderful to read all the interesting articles and interviews about Clay Aiken?  I hope there are many more in the next week.

Today is Greenville, South Carolina.  So, any guesses on which sweater Clay will wear?

ideastream is the name of the PBS group of stations in northeast Ohio.  The organization which does not capitalize their name, is very proud of all they are able to accomplish and present to the area.

On Wednesday, they broadcast an interview with Clay Aiken. I thought you might want to listen.  It is worth the time!!

Clay Aiken – YouTube Hit!

Saturday, January 8th, 2011

If you are a fan of Clay Aiken, you are probably also a fan of YouTube.  This five – year – old company has allowed fans to share “Clack” easily all over the world.

In its short life, YouTube has completely reshaped the Internet and influenced media and political landscapes.

In February of 2005, 3 young employees of PayPal started to work on the concept of YouTube.  It wasn’t until December of 2005 that YouTube officially debuted.

Saturday Night Live helped in making YouTube a popular site.  In December 2005, they aired a skit titled Lazy Sunday.  This short clip was an instant success for YouTube as the video had nearly 2 million views in one week.

Four months later, a company called Sequoia funded YouTube to the tune of $8 million dollars.  A year later, Google bought YouTube for $1.65 billion.

There are a couple of extraordinary events in YouTube history:

  • April 6, 2006: “The Evolution of Dance,” a six-minute mashup of 50 years of dance crazes was put on YouTube.  It became the most popular clip in YouTube history.  It generated over 131 million views.
  • July 23, 2007: CNN and YouTube hosted their first presidential debate.
  • April 11, 2009: Susan Boyle became a global celebrity. Her performance on a British show was viewed 80 million times.
  • October 12, 2009:  YouTube passes 1 billion videos a day.  The company still remains unprofitable as they spend more than $700 million to store and serve all the videos.
  • May, 2010:  The average person spends 15 minutes a day on YouTube.
  • Current:  24 hours worth of videos upload every minute.
  • Lady Gaga’s video of “Bad Romance” is the most popular video with 185.39 million views.

I can get lost in YouTube.  I probably spend too much time hunting for interesting videos and spend most of my YouTube time watching Clay Aiken.  Today I found a couple from the beginning of Clay’s professional musical career.  He was an amazing talent when these videos were filmed and I feel he is only become better as time has gone by.

I hope you have fun with these videos too!!

By the way…on Wednesday, January 12th we will post our trivia contest for 2 free PBS tickets to the San Francisco Tried & True concert.  Seat assignments are unknown at this time, but the seats should be good as they were bought through KQED as part of a pledge gift.

Clay Aiken – Jukebox or Tried and True?

“Suspicious Minds” is a song written in 1968 by Mark James (aka Francis Zambon). Performed by Elvis Presley in 1969, it became one of his most notable hits. Suspicious Minds was widely regarded as the single that jump-started Presley’s career after his successful 1968 Comeback Special. It was Presley’s last number-one single in the United States.  On their list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time, Rolling Stone has Suspicious Minds ranked at #91.

Elvis first performed  Suspicious Minds at the Las Vegas Hilton in July of 1969.  The single was released in the fall. It reached number one in the United States in the week of November 1st.  This song was Presley’s final number-one single in the U.S. before his death.

Clay Aiken first performed Suspicious Minds as a part of his Jukebox Tour in the summer of 2005.  On July 29th, Clay performed the song on Good Morning America’s Summer Concert Series. The performance received a great response from the audience and the chatter on all the Clay Boards was full of excitement.

Flash-forward to 2010 and Clay Aiken’s newest CD, Tried and True….  Suspicious Minds is one of the most popular songs on this album of classics.

Although the song is the same, the arrangements of both performances are somewhat different.  It is interesting to hear the differences.

There are two performances below.  The first is Clay’s performance at GMA and the second is from the taping of the Tried and True PBS special.  Which performance is your favorite?

Quote of the Day

It is not always about performance art, but about receiving positive energy from people with positive spirits. Sometimes we can see someone's spirit, and those are the people with great energy. Those are the people that get me through the day, especially on Broadway. -Clay Aiken
