Sometimes it’s easy to forget that not everybody has clean and accessible water. UNICEF’s Tap Project works to bring awareness, as well as water, to children around the world.

World Water Week is March 22-28, and you can help support the cause by stopping in at participating restaurants and paying $1 for tap water you usually get for free. Each dollar raised will provide a child with clean drinking water for 40 days, according to UNICEF. It’s pretty amazing how far a dollar can go.

Plus, if you want to do a little more, many cities will host a Tap Water walk on March 22 where walkers will carry up to a gallon of water a  mile in a “gesture of solidarity for children worldwide who suffer from a lack of readily available clean water.”

In Wilmington, Delaware, 6th grade students at the Montessori school are active volunteers in gaining participation from local restaurants in the Wilmington area.

How Water-Wise Are You?
Random facts from UNICEF

Did you know……….

  • that about two-thirds of your body is made up of water?
  • on average, people in the U.S. use more than 100 gallons of water a day, while people in most developing countries use less than 2 gallons a day.
  • it costs UNICEF only $37 to provide a water filter, purifier, and disinfectant that can be used by an entire village.
  • if you shorten your shower by 1 or 2 minutes, you could save up to 700 gallons of water per month.

The Tap Project is a favorite of Clay Aiken.  As an Ambassador for UNICEF, he made a great video about the children of the world and the Tap Project.  Take a look.  It is wonderful to see a celebrity who is passionate about making the world a better place.

Back on January 25, 2009, we talked about the Tap Project that is part of a UNICEF project to provide clean and accessible water to millions of children around the world.  Clay Aiken is a big supporter of this project and even taped a video blog about it.

Last week, UNICEF has sent out a reminder to all of their volunteers to keep the Tap Project in the news.

During World Water Week, March 22-28, 2009, the Tap Project will raise vital donations and awareness for UNICEF’s water and sanitation programs.  For every dollar raised, a child in need will have 40 days of clean water.

Tom Colicchio, Chef/Owner of  Craft Restaurants and ‘wichcraft says; “Participation in the Tap Project is an easy way for restaurants to help save the lives of children around the world.”

In an attempt to support the Tap Project, I visited the UNICEF site.  I was shocked to find only six restaurants in the San Francisco Bay Area listed as participants.  Perhaps all of us need to join in and ask our favorite restaurant if they are going to participate in the program.  It is such a worthy cause and an easy way to support the project.  Let us know when you recruit a restaurant.

The Tap Project

One of the many humanitarian projects that Clay Aiken has been involved with is called The Tap Project.

The Tap Project started in 2007 in New York City. It was a simple concept: restaurants would ask their patrons to donate $1 or more for the tap water they would usually enjoy for free. All the funds that were raised went to support UNICEF’s efforts to bring clean and accessible water to millions of children around the world.

In 2007, 300 New York City restaurants participated and it grew to over 2, 300 across the country in 2008. The Tap Project has grown into a national movement that involves restaurants, corporations, community groups, local governments, volunteers and everyday diners. Each has a goal to save the lives of millions of children.

During World Water Week, March 22-28, 2009, The Tap Project will again raise donations and awareness for UNICEF’s water and sanitation programs. Did you know that for every dollar raised, a child will have clean drinking water for 40 days? The money raised is put to good use by UNICEF to help millions of children around the world.

At this time, UNICEF provides access to safe water and sanitation facilities and promotes safe hygiene in more than 90 countries. By the year 2015, UNICEF expects to reduce the number of people without safe water and basic sanitation by 50%.

Why not join Clay Aiken and be a volunteer for UNICEF’s Tap Project. The event is coming up soon and they are still need Tap Project City Coordinators to help plan and implement the Tap Project in many locations. According to the UNICEF website; “These positions offer volunteers a unique and exciting opportunity to shape their UNICEF Volunteer experience and the Tap Project in their communities, while gaining valuable leadership and nonprofit management skills.” All UNICEF volunteers must fill out a form and register. Most Clay Aiken fans have been generous towards all his humanitarian projects. This is an opportunity to participate by volunteering time to this unique and exciting project.

Quote of the Day

It is not always about performance art, but about receiving positive energy from people with positive spirits. Sometimes we can see someone's spirit, and those are the people with great energy. Those are the people that get me through the day, especially on Broadway. -Clay Aiken
