Clay Aiken – An Incredible Night

Ever since MTV opened its TRL studio windows onto Times Square, MTV has staged a huge New Year’s Eve special. To some, it was a surprise since Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve is just down the block. But to Mike Powers, the executive producer in 2003/2004, it was just a perfect setting.

Clay Aiken was one of the featured musical guests at the MTV New Year’s Eve celebration in 2003. Clay sang two songs. His first performance was Invisible. He sang in the New Year with a romantic rendition of The Way.

The celebration was hosted by MTV’s Damien, La La, Vanessa, Quddus, Hilarie, Sway, and Suchin. The special guest co-host was Hilary Duff.

Joining Clay as part of the musical entertainment was Chingy, Ludacris, Hilary Duff, and Simple Plan.

Clay was interviewed a couple of times during the evening and somehow, it seemed he was always outside in the cold wind. It must have been an incredible night, seeing and hearing the huge crowds in Time Square.

Looking at all the names listed in this article, I wonder…….where are all these people today? I must be really “out of it” as I haven’t heard anything positive about any of those people, except Clay Aiken, of course.

Rapper Chingy has been involved in multiple lawsuits and he has changed his music label numerous times. His last CD hit the 84th place on the Billboard Charts.

Ludacris has been arrested for public brawling and has been involved in many lawsuits and feuds with different people. He was very crude and vocal with his comments during the 2008 election. No one wanted him on their side.

Hilary Duff has recorded three albums, plus two “best of” albums. She was accused of “stealing’ music from Depeche Mode on her latest album. She left her label and seems to be concentrating on her acting career. Hillary was married in 2010 and is expecting her first child soon.

Damien is currently the co-host of “I’m A Celebrity…..Get Me Out Of Here.” I don’t think anything else needs to be said.

Then there is Clay Aiken. In the last few years, he starred on Broadway, had a PBS Special, continues to work with UNICEF as an Ambassador, runs a successful charity that supports children and is not afraid to speak his mind when he sees injustices in the world. Oh, did I mention his successful albums, tours and TV appearances??

I found the following video on YouTube. It shows a lot of what Clay did on New Year’s Eve, 2003.

Clay Aiken – Surviving The Next Few Weeks

It’s Clay!!  Oh, wait maybe not….Yes, I recognize the shoes…Well, I think that is Clay’s shirt…I think he has worn that many times!!!  Besides, it matches the tweet!!  What do you mean its not Clay….NOOOOOO!!  Are you sure the picture is on Google Earth???

BUMMER!!!

I just don’t think I will survive the next few weeks!!

Late Monday afternoon, I was introduced to a new Charity.  Named The Art of Elysium, this wonderful organization was founded in 1997.  According to their website:

The Art of Elysium encourages working actors, artists and musicians to voluntarily dedicate their time and talent to children who are battling serious medical conditions.

The Art of Elysium provides artistic workshops in the disciplines of acting, art, comedy, fashion, music, radio, songwriting and creative writing. The Fine Arts Program encompasses Visual Arts Exploration, Fashion Design, and Photography allowing children to explore a wide range of mediums. TheTheatre/Media Program features Acting/Improv Workshops, Active Imaginations Theatrical Program, Laugh It Up Comedy Workshops, The Turn Around Plays Program, and The Take-2 Film Making Workshops. All give children a role in creating a film through cinematography, screenwriting, film editing, set design, music, makeup, and hair and costume design. Music Programs include Mix It Up, Music Lessons, Musical Performances, The Songwriting Program, and The Kids Radio Program that gives kids the opportunity to operate their own radio station.

Volunteers must be 18 years of age. You can also get involved by donating artistic supplies, become a sponsor, sponsor a program, buy art at their Art Gallery, purchase an art kit for a child, and shop their online store.

From Ben Afleck to Toby Maguire…Courteney Cox to Sting, the list of celebrities that support this worthwhile charity is enormous.

Tonight, Michelle Trachtenberg is hosting a fundraiser at Lord & Taylor at 5th Avenue in NYC.   The event, scheduled for 6PM celebrates the opening of the new Folli Follie shop in Lord & Taylor.

This is very interesting news especially when you realize that Clay Aiken was seen visiting Lord & Taylor yesterday with Arsenio Hall.  Then, a few minutes later, there were some messages on-line that Clay met with Michelle in the afternoon.

Of course, we don’t know if the sightings true or if they are rumors meant to shuffle all the facts so no one knows what is going on.

Folli Follie is a Greek-based international company which designs, manufactures and distributes jewellery, watches, and fashion accessories.   The company is known for supporting many charity events by holding sales to support worthy causes.

You can see their beautiful designs HERE

So…do we know what Clay is doing??  Not really, but I sure hope that someone can  RSVP to the fundraiser and heads to the charity event at Lord & Taylor.  Even if Clay is across town selling Pizza in Times Square, the event at Lord and Taylor is supporting a wonderful charity.

For more information on The Art of Elysium, you can visit their site by clicking on TheArtofElysium

I wish that I were going to be in New York City on Sunday, September 25, 2011.  I would love to stroll through Broadway and attend the Broadway Cares/Equity Fights Aids, Flea Market.  Not only would I have the opportunity to meet some amazing Broadway stars, I could get many unique gifts to jump-start my holiday shopping.

Usually housed in Shubert Alley, the flea market will be held on 44th street between 7th and 8th this year.  It seems that construction on the underground parking made the move a must.

The following is the Press Release for this great event:

THE 25TH ANNUAL
BROADWAY FLEA MARKET
& GRAND AUCTION
TO STRETCH ACROSS BROADWAY INTO TIMES SQUARE

THREE PRE-EVENT AUCTION PACKAGES OFFER
A VIP BEHIND-THE-SCENES TOUR OF THE BC/EFA FLEA MARKET,
FOLLIES OPENING NIGHT EXPERIENCE,

AND FINAL CATCH ME IF YOU CAN PERFORMANCE AND PARTY

PRESENTED BY AND BENEFITING BROADWAY CARES/EQUITY FIGHTS AIDS

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 25, 2011
10 AM – 7 PM
TIMES SQUARE & WEST 44TH STREET

Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS presents the 25TH Annual Broadway Flea Market & Grand Auction which will be held from 10 AM – 7 PM on Sunday, September 25 in Times Square & on West 44th Street. This not-to-be-missed event for every Broadway theatergoer is free and open to the public.

Broadway dreams will come true for theatre fans looking to find showbiz treasures and memorabilia, meet their favorite stars and bid on one-of-a-kind items and once-in-a-lifetime experiences like walk-on roles on Broadway and TV.

For the first time ever, the Broadway Flea Market & Grand Auction will encompass all of 44th Street between Seventh and Eighth Avenues, and will stretch across Broadway into Times Square, filling the wide pedestrian plaza between 43rd and 44thStreets.

It’s the only time in the event’s long history – not counting the infamous overnight move to Roseland in 2009 because of torrential downpours – that Shubert Alley will not be used for any portion of the Flea Market & Grand Auction. Construction on the parking garage below 1515 Broadway, which also extends underneath Shubert Alley, is precipitating the change.

“We look forward to turning this year’s construction challenge into a golden, sun-drenched opportunity to expand into Times Square’s wonderful pedestrian plazas,” BC/EFA executive director Tom Viola said. “Filling Broadway between 43rd and 44thStreets, there will be booths overflowing with theatrical memorabilia and at the end of the afternoon the Grand Auction. I hope you will take the few steps across Seventh Avenue with us, as you enjoy the high energy and activity that every year stretches down 44th Street to Eighth Avenue. Whatever the terrain, the best of Broadway shows up for the Broadway Flea Market. I hope you will too!”

Dozens of tables from Broadway’s most popular shows will set up shop for what Time Out New York calls one of the “Best Once-a-Year Markets” in New York City. Fans can buy that lost cast recording, signed show posters and Playbills, rare costume sketches, props and special gifts theatre-lovers can’t find anywhere else.

Hourly silent auction lots will give way to the live Grand Auction at the end of the day featuring a collection of unique items and experiences that will offer something for everyone.

One of the most popular sites at Broadway’s “one-day sale” is the Celebrity Autograph Table at which your favorite stars from Broadway and Off-Broadway sign autographs and pose for photos in exchange for donations to BC/EFA.

To kick-start the excitement, three pre-event auction packages are now open for bidding online. One package offers the ultimate VIP experience at the Flea Market & Grand Auction, including an exclusive “line-hopper pass” and opportunity to meet many of the participating stars with a personal celebrity liaison and escort for the day. Another package features two tickets to eagerly anticipated opening night of Follies at Broadway’s Marquis Theatre, including passes to the opening night party. The third kick-off package includes two tickets to the final Broadway performance of Catch Me If You Can and passes to the exclusive cast party afterward. Details on all three packages are available at broadwaycares.org/bidnow.

Specific items for sale at the Flea Market, other packages to be offered at the Grand Auction and stars to appear at the Celebrity Autograph Table will be announced in September on broadwaycares.org, on Twitter and on Facebook.

The 25TH Annual Broadway Flea Market & Grand Auction is sponsored by United Airlines and The New York Times.

Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS is one of the nation’s leading industry-based, nonprofit AIDS fundraising and grant-making organizations.  By drawing upon the talents, resources and generosity of the American theatre community, since 1988 BC/EFA has raised more than $195 million for essential services for people with AIDS and other critical illnesses across the United States.

BC/EFA awards annual grants to more than 400 AIDS and family service organizations nationwide and is the major supporter of seven programs at The Actors Fund, including the HIV/AIDS Initiative, the Phyllis Newman Women’s Health Initiative and the Al Hirschfeld Free Health Clinic.

For more information, please visit the Broadway Cares online broadwaycares.org.

If you are in the area, please stop by and support this wonderful organization.  They have so many ways that they support the Broadway community.  Maybe you can get a good start on your holiday shopping.

Clay Aiken has participated in many fundraisers for BC/EFA.  The last big event he was in was last January when he performed in Broadway Backwards, an amazing concert that raised $281,243.  His performance of Home from the show, The Wiz, was a highlight of the evening.

Clay Aiken – The Decca Decade!

The Decca Decade Has Arrived!

It is 2010 and now we know that news will come

SOON!!

While we wait……lets celebrate New Years!!

Did you know??

The most commonly sung song for English-speakers on New Year’s eve, “Auld Lang Syne” is an old Scottish song that was first published by the poet Robert Burns in the 1796 edition of the book, Scots Musical Museum. Burns transcribed it (and made some refinements to the lyrics) after he heard it sung by an old man from the Ayrshire area of Scotland, Burns’s homeland.

It is often said that “Auld Lang Syne” is one of the most popular songs that nobody knows the lyrics to. “Auld Lang Syne”  translates as “old long since” and means “times gone by.” The song asks whether old friends and times will be forgotten and promises to remember people of the past with fondness, “For auld lang syne, we’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet.”

Did you know?

……..that a raisin dropped in a glass of fresh champagne will bounce up and down continuously from the bottom of the glass to the top.

Did you know?

……..to many Americans, the ball dropping at Times Square in New York City signals the start of the new year in this country. The ball was first dropped in 1908.

Did you know?

…….Noisemaking and fireworks on New Year’s eve are believed to have originated in ancient times when noise and fire were thought to dispel evil spirits and bring good luck. The Chinese are credited with inventing fireworks and use them to spectacular effect in their New Years Celebration.

Did you know?

…….A traditional southern New Year’s dish is Hoppin’ John—black eyed peas and ham hocks. An old saying goes, “Eat peas on New Year’s day to have plenty of everything the rest of the year.”

Did you know?

…….The tradition of making of New Year’s resolutions dates back to the early Babylonians. Popular modern resolutions usually include the promise to lose weight or quit smoking. The early Babylonian’s most popular resolution was to return borrowed farm equipment.

Did you know?

The Tournament of Roses Parade dates back to 1886. In that year, members of the Valley Hunt Club decorated their carriages with flowers.  It celebrated the ripening of the orange crop in California.

Although the Rose Bowl football game was first played as a part of the Tournament of Roses in 1902, it was replaced by Roman chariot races the following year. In 1916, the football game returned as the sports centerpiece of the festival.

Happy 2010

Clay Aiken

The Best Is Yet To Come!

Times Square

Times Square

While Clay was busy starring in Spamalot last year, many of his fans were introduced to life in New York City.  If you visited the Shubert Theater, you also had a look at Times Square.

Times Square is a major intersection in New York City and was named after the Times Building which was the former offices of the New York Times.  It is located at Broadway and Seventh Avenue and extends from W42nd to W47th Streets.

Times Square has become a primary landmark in New York City.  Its animated, digital advertisements help create an incredibly exciting vibe.  It is the only neighborhood that actually requires building owners to display illuminated signs.

When you walk through Times Square, there are so many things to see that one cannot see it all.

One place that stands out in Times Square is the Hershey’s Times Square store.  Outside of the store, the 215-ft tall, 60-ft wide store façade is the largest permanent fixture ever constructed in Times Square.  It features 34 dimensional props, four steam machines, over 4,000 chasing lights, 30 programmable lights, 56 neon letters, and 14 front-lit signs.  Inside, you can purchase almost any gift that has to do with Hershey Candies.

When you were there, did you notice that George M. Cohan still stands in Times Square?  Over a century ago, he opened a show called “Little Johnny Jones”.  It contained the hit songs, “Yankee Doodle Dandy”, and “Give My Regards To Broadway.”

Through his talent, he imprinted his personality on the American Entertainment culture.  And so we don’t forget, his statue stands next to the TKTS booth at Duffy Square.

Debt CLock

Debt CLock

Not too long ago, time stood still – literally.  After the country’s debt surpassed $10 trillion, the marquee-sized debt clock in Times Square, ran out of digits.  The clock’s owners say that 2 more zeros will be added, allowing the clock to record a quadrillion dollars of debt.  Until that time, the Time’s Square counter’s electronic dollar sign has been replaced with an extra digit.

Over the past 20 years the digital “alarm” clock has been moved 4 times.  Today, it hangs near the entrance of the city’s IRS office.  The owner of the clock said, “We thought it was a fitting location.”

Naked Cowboy

Naked Cowboy

Robert Burck is someone you probably saw when you walked through Times Square.  He is known today as “The Naked Cowboy.”  He wears only cowboy boots, a hat and underwear, with a guitar strategically placed to give the illusion of nudity.  Though he is currently most famous in Times Square, he is also a regular in the streets of the French quarter during the New Orleans Mardi Gras season.  On January 25, 2009, he performed at a Leinster Rugby game in Ireland and sang his theme song “I’m the Naked Cowboy: before 18,000 spectators.

As with any busy place, there are changes all the time and that is the same with Times Square.  Two big changes are slated for 2009.  First, the Times Square Virgin Megastore will close down in April.  The space was home to many entertainment events.  Clay Aiken had his last album release event there.

The second change in Times Square is huge and somewhat controversial.  The city plans to close several blocks of Broadway to vehicle traffic through Times Square.  This would turn the Great White Way into a pedestrian mall, with chairs, benches and café tables with umbrellas.

Perhaps the event that is most tied to Times Square is New Years Eve.  Well over one million people crowd into the square to view the annual New Year’s Eve ball drop.

For Clay Aiken fans, New Year’s Eve, 2004 was especially wonderful.  As a performer at the MTV celebration, Clay’s live performance was on many of the elaborate signs in the square.

Times Square today is home to 46 theatres, 50 hotels, and over 5000 businesses.  It draws in 37 million tourists annually, and over $16 billion in revenue.  It is definitely a landmark in the city of New York.

Quote of the Day

It is not always about performance art, but about receiving positive energy from people with positive spirits. Sometimes we can see someone's spirit, and those are the people with great energy. Those are the people that get me through the day, especially on Broadway. -Clay Aiken
