K104.7FM is a radio station in Charlotte, North Carolina.  On Monday, July 5th, they posted a place to register for a chance to win a pair of tickets to the Clay Aiken – Ruben Studdard Concert.  The prize will include a pair of concert tickets for the July 23, 2010 concert at the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, North Carolina and hotel accommodations.

What a great opportunity for anyone who would love to attend the concert, but found it just wasn’t in their budget this summer.  If you win, please let us know so we can celebrate with you (and be a little jealous too.)

This particular promotion closed this morning……lucky for someone!!

BUT……..This station is now running another contest.  From their site:

We all know who won American Idol but who has finished second? It is not a bad thing to finish second. . .just ask Clay Aiken! In fact, you can ask him in person if you win “Biltmore Tests Your Idol IQ” where one lucky listener can win a Biltmore Prize Pack which includes reserved concert seating to see Clay Aiken and Ruben Studdard on Friday, July 23rd at the Biltmore Estate! Just name the last five second place winners of American Idol for your chance to win this great prize!

On Friday, July 5, 2010, Universal Music Group posted their Holiday Weekend Playlist on MySpace.  It looked like Universal chose one song from the MySpace page of 23 popular artists and combined them to create an exciting playlist of diverse music.  From Sheryl Crow to Justin Bieber, Maroon 5 to Eminem, there seemed to be something for everyone including Clay Aiken fans.  They included Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You on this great list.

When the list was posted in Friday afternoon, Clay’s play-count was the least of anyone on the list.  But, as of Monday night, Clay had over 9000 plays on the weekend and lost that place on the list.

Sometimes we forget how important it is to play Clay’s songs through MySpace and FaceBook.  Many people view both sites every day and although many Clay fans listen to his music each day, we don’t use the social internet sites as much as we should.  So, the next time you are at home and choose to listen to Tried & True, why not listen to it from Clay Aiken’s MySpace page.  Every play is a vote for Clay!!

Before Monday, most Clay Aiken fans knew little about Better TV.  That changed quickly when we found out that they were showing a short interview with Clay on July 5th.

Better is a nationally syndicated lifestyle TV show that aims to make ones life “better” by focusing on trends, beauty breakthroughs, finances, fitness, sex, decorating and all hot topics that affect your family and relationships.

Audra Lowe is the New York host of Better. Her broadcasting career includes 20 years in broadcasting. She hosted “FoxNOW”, Fox Broadcasting’s online entertainment arm promoting new and returning shows. Audra became one of the first to nab backstage interviews with “American Idol” finalists.

The program is produced and distributed by Meredith Corporation that was first founded as a publishing company back in 1902. Better gets its name from Meredith’s flagship publication, Better Homes and Gardens.

Did you have a chance to see Clay on the program?  If not, you can see it here.    There is a list of videos on the right.  Scroll down until you find Clay’s interview.   You can also download the video at CU

Clay Aiken – Universal and Decca are Leading The Way

By musicfan123 · Comments 8836(6)http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F2010%2F03%2F24%2Fclay-aiken-universal-and-decca-are-leading-the-way%2FClay+Aiken+-+Universal+and+Decca+are+Leading+The+Way2010-03-24+07%3A25%3A01musicfan123http%3A%2F%2Fwww.claynewsnetwork.com%2F%3Fp%3D8836
Wednesday, March 24th, 2010

Since Clay Aiken signed with Decca Records, a part of the Universal Music Group, I have been interested in how they approach the ever-changing music recording business.  It seem that UMG, the largest business group and family of record labels in the recording industry, is not afraid to try new and innovative ways to be the leader in the recording industry.

Universal Music Group recently unveiled a plan to test CD sales at $10 or less per unit. It’s a price that music fans have been demanding for years. Naming the program “Velocity,” UMG hopes that consumers will go out and buy CDs.

CD sales have fallen off in recent years while digital downloads have seen significant growth. The music site, Ars Technica projects that digital music sales will pass that of CDs by mid-to-late 2010.

Universal Music Group is taking steps to bolster their flagging CD sales. They are reducing the price per album, so that consumers will be spending anywhere between six and 10 dollars — a figure that is more competitive with digital services like iTunes.

The decision is a gamble for UMG: the price change lowers the company’s profit margin by shifting the wholesale price from $10.35 to about $7.50. Rolling Stone reports UMG is betting on increased sales volume to make the change profitable.

Jim Urie, Universal Music Group Distribution Chairman/CEO said:

“We think it will really bring new life into the physical format.”

The response to this new plan is mixed.  There are many people who are excited to see lower physical CD prices.  Lee Simmons from the internet site, Bizmology says that since it costs just pennies to manufacture a single CD, it is about time to see the lower price.

For some reason, the other major labels seem hesitant to try the new pricing.  Simmons states that some of the label execs are even annoyed with the idea.  However, they have not come up with another idea for stopping the decline in CD sales.

Will the lower price of a physical album entice consumers to purchase? It worked for retailer Trans World Entertainment, which saw sales jump 100 percent during a $9.99 test plan that partnered with Sony, UMG and EMI. With music sales already down 15.4 percent from just last year, success for UMG could signal a broader change from the other major labels

According to an industry observer at Billboard:

“The definition of idiocy is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. Things are not going to get better for CD sales unless the price point is addressed. One thing that the Trans World test shows for sure, $10 will drive sales and traffic.”

If the price of CDs is lowered by all the labels, I might be visiting the CD section of stores more often.  It is such a good feeling to walk out of the store with a brand new CD in your hands.  It feels good to slip it into the console of the car and listen as you drive home.  Now, if they can only come up with an easier way to open the CD case!!

Clay Aiken – New Boss

Since Clay Aiken signed with Decca/Universal Music Group, it has been interesting to watch the changes and growth the UMG has gone through in the last 6 months.

On January 11, 2010, Lucian Grainge was named chief executive of the largest music company in the world.  Mr. Grainge has been the head of International Operations for UMG.

Lucian Grainge was hand-picked by Doug Morris and will take over as CEO on Jan. 1, 2011.  Until that time, he will share responsibility with Morris.  Morris, who is 71, has headed Universal Music since 1995.  He will remain chairman of the label.

The 49 year old Grainge has, for 5 years, run the international group, where he has helped grow the label’s market share and introduced new acts. He started his music career in 1997 with CBS/April Music where his job was to find and develop new artists. He assumes the reins of Universal Music Group at a time when music piracy continues to erode sales. The label saw a 5% revenue decline in the nine months that ended in September.

Universal Music has attempted to develop new digital revenue streams through ventures such as its new, ad-supported Vevo online music video service developed with the help of Google Inc.’s YouTube.

Grainge said he has seen some success globally with emerging services like Spotify, the Swedish firm that offers on-demand music streaming, and Nokia’s “Comes With Music” which gives customers who buy a Nokia mobile phone a year’s worth of unlimited access to songs on the device.

Grainge said:

“I’d like us to continue to build those relationships and build the ability for us to do business with different businesses, using the music and the artists and the brand of the artists to get the music sexily and legitimately to as many people as we can.”

Vivendi, the French owners of UMG said that they were pleased to see a young executive who was willing to take risks and experiment with new ways of getting music to all consumers.

Jean-Bernard Levy, chairman of the Vivendi management board, said:

“His track record speaks for itself, finding stars, growing revenues and building new business models. He has the right combination of experience and innovation to take UMG forward as the migration into the digital era accelerates.”

Clay Aiken – The Ever-Changing Music Field

By musicfan123 · Comments 7986(6)http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F2010%2F01%2F30%2Fclay-aiken-the-ever-changing-music-field%2FClay+Aiken+-+The+Ever-Changing+Music+Field2010-01-30+07%3A42%3A46musicfan123http%3A%2F%2Fwww.claynewsnetwork.com%2F%3Fp%3D7986
Saturday, January 30th, 2010

With all the research that is done, it becomes more obvious that Clay Aiken looked at the big picture when he signed with Decca, a label in the Universal Music Group.  The world’s largest music group is busy adding partners and business associates to keep in the forefront of the ever-changing music field.

Universal Music Group (UMG) is expanding its line-up of direct-to-consumer mobile content and services for music fans through an agreement with Netbiscuits, the world’s leading mobile publishing platform. The announcement was made on January 28th by David Ring, Executive Vice President of Business Development & Business Affairs for UMG’s eLabs, and Ran Farmer, Managing Director of Netbiscuits Inc.

In their press release UMG stated that… With this agreement, UMG will use Netbiscuits market-leading web software to launch mobile websites and services for UMG’s chart-topping artists. By doing so, UMG will be opening up even more channels of content discovery and delivery to music fans everywhere. Through these artist-branded mobile websites, UMG will offer fans the ability to interact with other fans and to make purchases directly from their handset. Based on the mobile websites, Netbiscuits allows UMG to set up smart hybrid apps for all major platforms, including the iPhone, Android, and Windows Mobile devices.

David Ring said:

“Universal is committed to providing consumers with even more engaging interactive opportunities to connect with their favorite artists and music by personalizing their mobile devices. Thanks to the support we are getting from Netbiscuits, we’ll be in an even better position to extend these artist opportunities and products across the widest array of available wireless devices. Through their exclusive technology, we’ll be able to offer consumers truly engaging mobile music experiences that include the chance to generate their own content, leaving comments, uploading pictures, and chatting with each other via these mobile sites. UMG will continue to lead the way in adopting the latest technology to offer fans the most dynamic interactive musical experiences possible.”

In November of 2009, UMG first began working with Netbiscuits when they worked together on the successful launch of the mobile website for Bon Jovi.

Managing Director of Netbiscuits Inc, Ran Farmer commented, saying,

“We’re very excited to help Universal Music mobilizing so many of the world’s most famous music artists All these artists going mobile means to me that the mobile Web today really is a mass market phenomenon. Adding the right mobile commerce strategies and technologies to the mix finally paves the way for real revenues coming from the mobile channel.”

Netbiscuits delivers content for more than 6.000 different mobile devices worldwide. The platform enables a next generation user experience on the latest smart phones and web-enabled phones. For a 360 degree experience, Universal Music will also use the text messaging service suite that is integrated with the Netbiscuits platform to provide music lovers with SMS (short message service) alerts whenever their artist is in town.

So……does this mean that Clay Aiken will be on my phone???  Will Decca let me know when Clay is in town??  I liked the possibilities that…….. “mobile music experiences that include the chance to generate their own content, leaving comments, uploading pictures, and chatting with each other via these mobile sites”……is a part of the package.  It sounds like we can have a lot of fun.

Clay Aiken – Digital Music Report

By musicfan123 · Comments 7972(14)http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F2010%2F01%2F28%2Fclay-aiken-digital-music-report%2FClay+Aiken+-+Digital+Music+Report2010-01-28+07%3A07%3A21musicfan123http%3A%2F%2Fwww.claynewsnetwork.com%2F%3Fp%3D7972
Thursday, January 28th, 2010

As we anticipate the release of the new CD by Clay Aiken, it is important that we stay informed about what is going on in the music recording industry.  The following information is important and “hot off the press.”

The IFPI (or International Federation of the Phonographic Industry) represents 1400 record companies in 72 countries.  It just published their Digital Music Report for 2010, which looks at international trends in the recording industry over the past year.

The IFPI said that the industry had seen positive developments in 2009, with more than a quarter of all recorded music revenues now coming from digital sales after the industry embraced new ways to sell tracks.  Fans today can access and pay for music in different ways.  They can buy tracks or albums from download stores, use subscription services, use music services that are bundled with devices, buy apps for music and listen to music through streaming services for free.

Record labels are making music available in many unprecedented ways.  Today, albums come in hundreds of formats and products.  A popular example is Beyonce’s album, “I Am…Sasha Fierce.”  The album is available in more than 260 different products in the United States.  These include music videos, master tones, ringback tones and audio tracks.

Lucian Grainge is the Chairman and CEO, Universal Music Group International.  He was quoted in the report as saying;

“We are shaping our own future by finding new ways of getting music into people’s lives.”

The annual report is 30 pages long and touches on many positive and negative things in the recording industry.

In their report, the IFPI reported that 95% of all music downloads are illegal – and they say that “cooperation from Internet Service Providers holds the key to this problem.”

Piracy is the major barrier to growth of the legitimate digital music sector and is causing severe damage to local music industries around the world.  The IFPI goes on to say that the industry has reached a tipping point with digital music, and suggests that the government needs to look to ISPs to police file sharing.  Their plan is to have ISPs use a “graduated response”, warning suspected pirates first, and then disconnecting them from the Internet.

IFPI chairman and CEO John Kennedy said;

“Digital piracy remains a huge barrier to market growth and is causing a steady erosion of investment in local music. The collapse in sales and investment in France, Spain and Brazil, countries with traditionally vibrant music cultures, testify to this and are a warning to the rest of the world.”

Another interesting topic that they reported on was the highly damaging problem of pre-release piracy.  Unfortunately, sometimes pre-release tracks and albums leak days or weeks before their official release.  Jeremy Banks is IFPI’s director of anti-piracy.  He says:

“Record labels are more aware than ever that the protective measures they take in the days around an album’s release are absolutely crucial to whether the album will realize its full market potential.  You can count the cost in terms of lost returns to artist and record company from the moment the first copy leaks out onto the internet.”

The anti-piracy team tracks leaks of tracks and albums released all over the world.  It searches blogs, forums and websites.  They also work with legitimate online services like YouTube, to make sure that copyright infringements are removed.  In 2009, more than five million links were removed.

One of the most high-profile pre-release leaks of 2009 was the posting of Leona Lewis tracks online when there was a “Hack” of an internet account at her record company.  Syco Records called in the police and by working with industry investigators, traced the origins of the leak.  Simon Cowell is the managing director of Syco Records.

The 30 page report has many statistics and quotes and covers much more information than is reported here.  If you want to read more information, you can see the entire report HERE.

Clay Aiken – Checking Out FreeAllMusic

By musicfan123 · Comments 7777(8)http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F2010%2F01%2F14%2Fclay-aiken-checking-out-freeallmusic%2FClay+Aiken+-+Checking+Out+FreeAllMusic2010-01-14+08%3A31%3A30musicfan123http%3A%2F%2Fwww.claynewsnetwork.com%2F%3Fp%3D7777
Thursday, January 14th, 2010

Since Clay Aiken is now a recording artist at Decca/Universal Music Group, it is interesting to follow all the new partnerships that the company is using to keep updated in the changing business of music.

On Monday, January 11th, Universal Music Group announced that they have joined hands with a company called FreeAllMusic.  This ad-sponsored digital music download service will offer consumers free, legal downloads.

Because of this new affiliation, thousands of tracks from many of the world’s most famous artists will now be accessible to the users in the private test group.  Users will be allowed 20 free downloads in a month, five per week beginning every New Music Tuesday.

FreeAllMusic.com is a new music service that provides consumers with downloadable, high-quality, iPod-compatible MP3s of popular songs that are free, legal, and advertiser-paid. Users receive a permanent, high-quality download which they can enjoy anytime, anywhere with no further advertising or restrictions by watching one brief video commercial per download.   There is no software required for the service.

To download a free track, registered users can just choose a participating brand they favor, and watch a concise video from that brand. Following each download, FreeAllMusic.com serves additional advertisements for that brand across targeted websites. Visitors to those sites will see ads displaying information about downloads, supporting brands, and FreeAllMusic.com. If users want to share with their friends, information about their download can be mailed to them and they can even download it legally for free…if they watch the ad, too. Sharing of download activity can also be posted on popular social networking sites.

Coca-Cola, Warner Bros. TV, Zappos.com, Lionsgate, LG, inconcert3D, and Powermat are the charter brands for the private beta period. Users can receive their free music lawfully, brands may expand their loyalties, and artists are compensated no differently than if the tracks were bought, thereby crafting a fair balance to all participants.

Richard Nailing from FreeAllMusic.com said,

“For the first time, a legitimate free music download service is making ‘doing the right thing’ easier than piracy. Our site is fast, easy and fun for consumers. The addition of UMG’s artists from Lady Gaga and Rihanna to Taylor Swift and Jay Sean means people can count on FAM to offer an excellent selection of DRM-free music for just about every taste.”

David Ring, Executive Vice President of Business Development and Business Affairs for UMG’s eLabs  stated,

“Free All Music has created a new advertising model that connects fans, artists and brands. It provides an opportunity for fans to support the artists that they love, and brands to build loyalty with existing and new consumers. Universal Music is committed to enabling and supporting services that provide engaging alternatives for fans looking to legally download music.”

Does this seem like the kind of program you would be interested in? Will the general public be willing to sit through a short commercial for a free song?  It certainly seems like a good idea and it is nice to see that the musicians will get compensated for the download.

Clay Aiken – Adjusting To The Times

By musicfan123 · Comments 7009(12)http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F2009%2F11%2F12%2Fclay-aiken-adjusting-to-the-times%2FClay+Aiken+-+Adjusting+To+The+Times2009-11-12+09%3A14%3A21musicfan123http%3A%2F%2Fwww.claynewsnetwork.com%2F%3Fp%3D7009
Thursday, November 12th, 2009

It looks like Clay Aiken signed with a leading company that is  innovative and  adjusts to the times.  Decca/Universal Music Group is at it again.

On November 4, 2009, Universal Music Group and Serato Audio Research announced an innovative, global and secure digital distribution service to be used by DJs.  It is entitled Whitelabel.net.  Serato Audion Research has been recognized as the market leader in its field since 1999.

The Serato Whitelabel Delivery Network allows DJs to receive fresh releases at no charge and play them to crowds within moments of downloading them, bringing back the meaning “for promotional use only”.  Whitelabel.net serves to resurrect the link between promo people and the professional DJ.

Over the past year, Universal and Serato ran a pre-launch trial.  During this time, the service successfully delivered 2.5 million tracks to over 40,000 DJs worldwide.  This is the first collaboration in this field between a major recording company and a service that is specifically designed for DJs.

Vincent Freda is the Executive Vice President of Digital Logistics for Universal Music.  His comments about the program were very interesting.

“Serato is setting the standard for professional DJs that are breaking hits on the radio and in top clubs.  Using their Whitelabel.net service, we can reach the DJ directly and quickly with new music.  Whitelabel.net is more efficient than sending vinyl records and more secure than delivering conventional audio files over the internet.”

General Manager of Serato, Sam Gribben seemed impressed with the partnership.  He said:

“We developed the Whitelabel.net service with imput from Universal that was completely invaluable.  They have so much experience with music distribution and helped us figure out the essentials for all labels, no matter how big or small.  In turn, we were able to provide them with the security of our Whitelabel audio files to ensure that music could not be leaked or distributed illegally.”

Whitelabel.net will provide a direct relationship between record companies and performing DJs.  This will allow the DJs the ability to reignite the tradition of breaking new music in clubs.

Whitelabel.net will also provide record labels with important statistics and feedback on new music as it is introduced to DJs.  It will allow Universal Music and irs record labels to analyze the amount of previews and downloads.  It will provide a dedicated feedback forum for each release.

Decca Records is an important label for Universal Music Group.  Since Clay Aiken announced that he had signed with Decca, it has been interesting following all the new, innovative business partnerships that have been formed with Universal Music Group.  It is obvious that this company is looking towards the future and making changes that fit the times.  The world of digital music is the way of the future.  It is good to see that Clay is signed with a company that is a leader in its field.

Quote of the Day

It is not always about performance art, but about receiving positive energy from people with positive spirits. Sometimes we can see someone's spirit, and those are the people with great energy. Those are the people that get me through the day, especially on Broadway. -Clay Aiken
