On February 7, 2011, Clay Aiken participated in the 6th edition of BROADWAY BACKWARDS. Held at the beautiful Longacre Theatre, the show was filled with an all-star cast that included Tony Award winners Hinton Battle, Len Cariou, Alan Cumming, Debra Monk, Bebe Neuwirth, Denis O’Hare, Karen Olivo and Lillias White, Academy Award winner F. Murray Abraham and American Idol runner-up Clay Aiken.
BROADWAY BACKWARDS is an amazing benefit concert for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS and the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center of New York. In 2011, the concert raised a record-breaking $281,243 for the two organizations.
According to the Broadway Cares/Equity Fights Aids website:
BROADWAY BACKWARDS reinterprets the songs of musical theater by featuring women singing songs originally written for men and men singing songs written for women. By keeping the lyrics intact, including the pronouns, each song takes on an entirely new dimension. It’s Broadway in a whole new key.
I remember the benefit concert very well. I was lucky enough to be at the event and see and hear all the excitement of the night.
The obvious highlight for this Clay Aiken fan was seeing Clay shine on the Broadway stage as he performed “Home” from The Wiz. He started quietly and slowly built to a powerful climax. He sang from his heart and the audience was moved by his outstanding performance. As the applause continued, Clay returned to the stage for a second bow. Appropriately, Clay seemed right at “Home” on the Broadway stage.
I am so glad that I was able to attend this wonderful sold-out concert. It was a special evening that I will never forget.
I hope you take a moment and watch the following video of the wonderful performance by Clay Aiken. It is outstanding.
Do you want to see Clay return to Broadway soon?
That's our Clay – Just the absolute best!!! I would be happy for Clay to do whatever makes him happy
at this time. I would like for him to just be singing anywhere and everywhere!
Do I want to see Clay back on Broadway? Are you kidding me? LOL Clay belongs on
Broadway! We saw that in Spamalot where he never missed a beat in his delivery
and comedic timing. He is so perfect for the stage. I would love to see him
perform in a serious role. He can play any kind of character and do it well. Fingers
crossed it happens soon 🙂
Ditto Carol, i agree totally, Clay would be wonderful on Broadway!
Yes Clay belongs on Broadway most definitely —- in any starring role but mostly singing
He can do it all !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I agree, Clay should be on Broadway, he would be great!
I would love to see Clay on Broadway again!!! In a more singing role. He did so wonderful in Spamalot. Clay's voice is made for Broadway, and Broadway has been kind to him. I just know it will happen, when the right play comes along….I will definitely be making a train trip to NYC again…and I can't wait.
Carolcooke, you took the words out of my mouth. Clay surely does belong on Broadway! But I differ with you as to the type of show. I'd love to see him with the lead in a romantic musical comedy. He'd shine! Matters not whether it's guy-girl or guy-guy. Either would be great.
I think Clay would be spectacular in Book of Mormon. Singing, not too much dancing, and just being his silly self. Sign me up for tickets!
thats my clay just absolute amazing i wold want clay ta do what ever he wanted to do with his singing but ohh what i woldt give to see clay on bradway ithink he wold do amazing in it
Really enjoyed Clay singing "Home" again. He blew that one right out of the stadium. Of course I would want to see Clay on Broadway again. I, also, would like him in a romantic role where he could sing his heart out. He even mentioned that he would like to have a role where he could sing if he ever went back to Broadway. Clay belongs on Broadway! That was proven by all the crowds who came to see Clay at the Stage Door in Spamalot. They absolutely loved him…who wouldn't?
YES! WHATEVER CLAY WANTS TO DO! and thank you for posting the Jimmy <immel and the horse.
