Forty years ago, millions watched and heard reports of Apollo 11 landing on the lunar surface.
It was the ultimate reality show — this TV spectacular was one of a kind.
Millions of people were glued to their television sets on July 20, 1969 to watch two adventurous men as they debuted the art of “moonwalking.”
Apollo 11 astronauts Neil Armstrong and Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin became the first humans ever to set foot on the Moon. It was an event that captured the world’s imagination and inspired a generation of scientists and researchers.
Today, July 20th, marks the 40th anniversary of that historic achievement. For those old enough to remember the moon landing in vivid detail, do you also remember what you were doing at the time?
I remember in great detail when Neil Armstrong set his foot on the lunar surface. My husband and I were in Fulda, Germany and my husband was a member of the Army Band. We didn’t have a TV or even a radio in our apartment so we got in our VW Bug and drove to the post. When we arrived at the music building, we just sat in the car as we listened to the Armed Forces Radio as it reported each step and milestone. When we finally knew the men were safe, we stopped the engine and joined our colleagues for a celebratory dinner and great conversation.
Where were you and what were you doing?? Share your memories with us about this spectacular moment. It’s a special moment in history.
WAIT A MINUTE!! Isn’t this a Clay Aiken blog?? Absolutely!! However, I would bet that Clay has asked his friends and relatives to share their experiences with him. From what I have read, Clay is interested in history and would probably enjoy our historical memories.
I hope you will share your recollections with us. Each story is important!!
Check out clayaikenjourney . Maybe Clay is on the moon!!!
I love this blog, and really like how you link major news stories to Clay !!!!
Gotta love the man 🙂

Musicfan,
I was somewhere in Texas 40 years ago. I think my husband — who served in the 82nd Airborne Division Band, btw, another tidbit for our list of commonalities — was touring the state with a trio.
With huge chunks of spare time, I learned to play the guitar that summer; but I also remember watching the moon landing/walks in the wall-to-wall TV coverage. That fall my husband went back to college, and I worked as a newspaper reporter.
Thank you for your kind remarks in the xxx4clay post at the Carolina site. Have an awesome week!

My husband and I got engaged that day. We had taken a trip over to Yellowstone Park and decided to call his parents to tell them the news of our engagement. I remember us watching this evenet on TV, but I don’t remember if we were still in Yellowstone or had driven back to Billings by then and watched it. Sure miss Montana. This was a great day in history for America. Looking forward to the Mars landing.
Clay Aiken’s voice sends me over the moon. That’s all I’ve got to say.
I remember watching this on TV. The entire nation was riveted! Thanks!
I can’t believe that it has been 40 years!! I remember being proud, but also a bit scared for the men. It was all so new to us.
I have no special story about the moment. I was at home in California with my parents. They were really excited!!
I remember going outside and waving at the moon!!!!
:-0 Clay Aiken wasn’t even born yet……
What a day!! I remember being so excited & watching the TV coverage. What a special day for our nation.
How exciting when Neil Armstrong walked on the moon and made the comments. Part of American history. (I wonder if Clay Aiken is on the moon?) 😉
So many scientific advances in these past years. I’m glad you put this in your Clay blog.
Interesting we’re celebrating the first man on the moon and walking on the moon. I think there’s an eclipse this week and maybe Clay Aiken will blog.
What an adventure that was for us….the first moon walk. I remember going outside to look at the moon on that magical night.
When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie
That’s amore
When the world seems to shine like you’ve had too much wine
That’s amore
Bells will ring ting-a-ling-a-ling, ting-a-ling-a-ling
And you’ll sing “Vita Bella”

All the moon talk reminded me of this song which played in the background of Cher’s Moonstruck.
Yeah – I’m silly and Clay has me moonstruck.
Believe it or not, I was not born when this happened. BUT, I have heard my parents talk of the excitement and fear that that felt. There was a lot of pride too!!
The astronauts are true heros for what they did!!
This is a nice blog. I would like to read more stories here.
I was on vacation with my husband when Armstrong took the first step on the moon. WE stopped what we were doing and just watched. It was amazing!!
Mike…….above……..are you Clay’s age??
Thanks for this blog of many memories.
The moon walk was some exciting. We had just moved to a new town and province to find our home there wasn’t ready. So I watched it in a small motel room with my 2 preschoolers.
Great Blog. I am so glad that you brought this story up. It is a very big deal 🙂
I was too young to remember this, but I remember my parents talking about it. Very cool.
I remember exactly where I was 40 years ago.
40 years ago today??!! Wow!! What an amazing experience for those astronauts. And, from what I can see from sue’s blog, looks like Clay Aiken has been to the moon too!!
Great blog about a great achievement and also about a great man – Clay Aiken
Wow, hard to believe this happened before I was born. Great blog !
I was a young child 40 years ago when this historical event took place. I remember walking to my grandparents house with my family to watch this since their tv had better reception. I’ll bet Clay took some time to watch the news programs yesterday that recounted that special day.
