Clay Aiken – Did You Know?

By musicfan123 · Comments 10574(6)http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F2011%2F06%2F22%2Fclay-aiken-did-you-know%2FClay+Aiken+-+Did+You+Know%3F2011-06-22+07%3A37%3A58musicfan123http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F%3Fp%3D10574
Wednesday, June 22nd, 2011

Yesterday, a Clay-friend contacted me.  She was watching for inexpensive flights to Raleigh, NC.  She planned to attend the Annual Champions Gala on October 22, 2011 for the National Inclusion Project. She came across a wonderful fare that she wanted to share with anyone who might be interested.

Celebrating 40 Years With $40 Fares – One Way!

Southwest Airlines

  • Fares do not include federal excise tax of $3.70 per takeoff and landing, airport-assessed passenger facility charges (PFC) of up to $9, and government-imposed September 11th Security Fee of up to $5 one-way.
  • Purchase by June 23, 2011, 11:59 pm Pacific Time.
  • Travel August 23 through November 16, 2011.
  • Travel valid every day except Fridays & Sundays.

Not to be left out, American Airlines has matched the price on some of their flights.  So…you might want to check your favorite airline to see if they have matched the fare.

Of course, I am sure you know that I am in no way affiliated with Southwest and I am only reporting on the great rate.  Although the Gala is 4 months away, it seems unlikely that the fares will be this low again.  BUT…be sure you watch the time limit.  Tomorrow goes by very quickly.

AND…don’t forget, you can get a good deal at the Host hotel in Raleigh for your stay.

Raleigh Marriott City Center
500 Fayetteville Street
Raleigh, North Carolina 27601

Phone:  1-919-833-1120

http://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/rdumc-raleigh-marriott-city-center/

Special rate of $119 per night.  Ask for the National Inclusion Project group rate.

I came across an interesting site on the Internet yesterday.  Titled “Inside The Rock Era”, the site lists important things that happen in Rock Music History.  For June 22, the list is long and includes the following:

  • 1964:  Jan and Dean released the single “The Little Old Lady From Pasadena”.
  • 1980:  Don McLean rose to #1 in the U.K. with his remake of the Roy Orbison song “Crying”.
  • 1990:  Billy Joel became the first rock artist to perform at Yankee Stadium.
  • 1991:  Paula Abdul spent a second week at #1 with “Rush, Rush”.
  • 2003:  Clay Aiken had the #1 song with “This Is the Night”.

It is always fun to see Clay’s name on a list that highlights the significant events in the world of music.

Visit Inside The Rock Era.  It is interesting.

Congratulations to BroadwayCares/Equity Fights Aids.  On June 19th, they presented two performances of Broadway Bares  XXI.  Titled Masterpiece, the modern-day burlesque spectacular featured 192 Broadway dancers.

The program raised a record-breaking $1,103,072 to help support the work of BC/EFA.  According to their website:

Last year’s 20th Anniversary edition of Broadway Bares had set the previous record at $1,015,985. The first Broadway Bares, in 1992, featured seven dancers stripping on a bar and raised just over $8,000. To date, the 21 editions of Broadway Bares have raised more than $8.6 million for Broadway Cares.

There are many amazing pictures from the event, but my favorite of all is the picture of David Hyde Pierce.  This man is a genius!

Clay Aiken – Broadway Memories

The ClayNation was surprised and excited with the news that Clay Aiken would be one of the stars participating in an one-night-only show on Broadway.  Titled Broadway Backwards 6, the show will be produced by Broadway Cares and will benefit BC/EFA and The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center of New York City.

The show features some of the biggest stars of Broadway and has a fun twist.  The performers will be singing songs that were originally written for the opposite gender.  Men will sing songs written for women and women will sing songs written for men.  All the lyrics will be exactly as the songwriter wrote them, including the pronouns.  With this twist, the songs take an entirely new dimension.  Sometimes the results will produce laughs while other results will produce touching moments.  Will you be able to attend the concert?  It sounds like lots of fun.

Longacre Theatre
220 West 48th St, NYC

It was just two years ago yesterday, January 4th,  that Clay Aiken performed his last performance of Spamalot on the stage of the Shubert Theater.  It was a night of celebration for the audience and the cast members.  From the look on Clay’s face, it was a night full of joy and excitement for him too.

Thank you, Clay for the great Broadway adventure.  Your performances as Sir Robin, Guard 1 and Brother Maynard were spot on and gave the audience lots of laughs.

I was lucky enough to see Clay perform in Spamalot and even was chosen as the peasant one night.  However, I was not there for the final show.  Were you there?

Are you interested in some Clay concert tickets??  If so, stay tuned because in a few days we will be having a contest for 2 concert tickets for the San Francisco Concert on Saturday,March 12th.  These tickets should be good as they were bought as part of the PBS Pledge to KQED.  I think the contest will be fun and I hope that the tickets will find a good home.  More info about the contest and the tickets will be posted later this week!!  How is your Clay Trivia??

Clay Aiken – Let’s Go Holiday Shopping!

Whether you want to admit it or not, for many people, Christmas is about presents!  Children run to the tree on Christmas morning, hoping to see lots of gifts from Santa!!  Some adults start buying gifts early in the summer while others who procrastinate, run to the mall in the week before the holiday!

Christmas’s gift-giving tradition has its roots in the Three Kings’ offerings to the infant Jesus. The magi traveled to Bethlehem to present Christ gifts. Some Eastern Orthodox Churches and European countries still celebrate the traditional date of the Magi’s arrival — January 6 or Three Kings’ Day — with a Christmas-like gift exchange.

Santa Claus, the popular bearer of gifts, started popping up in ads and stores about 1850. By 1867, the Macy’s department store in New York City stayed open until midnight on Christmas Eve, allowing last-minute shoppers to make their purchases.  Today, Christmas is a bona fide gift-giving bonanza.

Many fans of Clay Aiken try to shop for gifts that have more meaning than some other presents.  They look at the different organizations that have meaning to Clay and see if there is a way that they might help.

The following sites all have interesting gifts for Christmas.  Each site has many things that would put a smile on faces on Christmas Day.  Please check them out.  It’s a win-win situation!

How about some Tried & True Concert tickets?

The Mesa Arts Center offers Black Friday ticket discounts. What a great way to attend a concert, or introduce Clay to some friends.  And, Arizona is a great place to visit in the winter.

From their site:

If you’re the type that thinks giving an experience is far more memorable than giving a pair of Christmas boxers or a singing Ninja hamster, this is a Black Friday sale for you.

Tickets to select shows will be discounted to $24 during Mesa Arts Center’s Black Friday Sale. Good for all upcoming “Performing Live” shows, the deal includes concerts by Dave Koz, Lang Lang, Josh Bell, Wynton Marsalis, Clay Aiken, Steve Tyrell and Nikki Yanofsky. Performances include “Menopause The Musical,” “Girls Night: The Musical,” “The Aluminum Show” and “Video Games Live.”
Tickets will be available 12 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. Friday at mesaartscenter.com. They will also be available 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday by phone at (480) 644-6500 or in person at the box office, 1 E. Main St., Mesa. In any case, you must use the code “BLACKFRIDAY” at checkout.

Tickets will be available in limited numbers. To see which shows are included in the sale, hover over “Performances,” then click “Performing Live” at mesaartscenter.com.

Clay Aiken – Busy Year!

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

The year 2008 had to be one of the most memorable years for Clay Aiken.  His life was full of so much, both professionally and personally.

Professionally, Clay was very busy.  In January, he made his debut on Broadway, starring in Spamalot.  At the same time he is recording his new CD.  He was on numerous TV shows and was a featured performer at the Ford Theater Gala.

In his philanthropic endeavors, Clay was involved in three projects for UNICEF and two major fundraisers for BroadwayCares/ Equity Fights AIDS.  He also had his own foundation which is an on-going responsibility.

Personally, Clay became a dad for the first time and announced on People magazine that he was a gay Dad!!

YIKES!!   What a year!!  I hope he had as much fun as his fans did.  It was a fascinating year!

The following video explains the year much better than I could ever wish to.  It is a wonderful “year in review’ and a great tribute to a wonderful guy.

The Broadway Bears XII

The Broadway Bears

The Broadway Bears

Since this is the last week of the Broadway Bears XII pre-auction, the people at BroadwayCares/Equity Fights AIDS are hoping that everyone will have a chance to see the 44 one-of-a-kind bears and learn more about them. The person in charge of the auction this year is Scott Stevens.  In our conversation on Wednesday by phone, Scott was kind enough to give us permission to show you some of the bears and explain some of the details of the bears.  He said that he was excited that we wanted to support the bears and the mission of the organization.

Cats

Cats

As of Saturday afternoon, the bear that has the highest bid is from CATS.

It is called Growltiger and is outfitted in an exact replica of his Broadway counterpoint.  His costume is handcrafted and his tunic has been crocheted from 3 types of yarn. The bid for Growltiger stands at $5000.00

Equus

Equus

One of the featured bears this season represents the show, EQUUS. This unique work of art represents Alan, the young man in the show on one of his late-night rides.  The metal skeletal horse head gives this bear a haunting look.  Oh, nugget’s hooded eyes are  special.  They light up.  The bid for Alan Strang with Nugget is $650.00 and is signed by 3 of the actors.

Starlight Express

Starlight Express

Ashley from Starlight Express is signed by Audrea McArdle and is wearing an exact replica of the Tony-Award winning costume.  Ashley represents the Smoking Car and her character is one of the female coaches that make the Twilight Express run.  Her shoes??  No, Ashley wears roller skates. You could start the bidding for Ashley for $500.00

Shrek

Shrek

Tim Hatley is the designer for the Shrek bear.  The bear has added padding and has a very rounded mid-section.  The highlight of this costume is the horned helmet he wears.  It has been hand-crafted and painted silver.  Be sure and check out the bushy eyebrows.  Please remember that beauty is only skin-deep and start the bidding on Shrek for $500.00.

The musical Spamalot went all out when they designed and created the Sir Robin Bear. Since “musical theatre” is Sir Robin’s Grail, it is fitting that the bear is dressed to be a song-and-dance man.  The detail in the costume of this bear is amazing. The teal-lined jacket is an Italian wool-gabardine and the lapels are hand-beaded with 375 peridot, green and silver beads. Handmade Swarovski-crystal and rhinestone buttons decorate the jacket front and sleeves.

Spamalot

Spamalot

The amazing checkerboard pattern of the vest was created with 1,076 beads and 80 Swarovski crystals. The artist was particularly careful with the shoes which are silver and white.  They are also decorated with Swarovski crystals. More than 30 hours of work and love went into hand-beading the more than 1500 beads and crystals.  The Sir Robin Bear has been signed by Clay Aiken and is looking forward to living in a loving home.  The top bid for Sir Robin is now at $4,600.00

Last year, the Broadway Bears raised $130,878.00 for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. Their goal this year is to reach that total or even surpass it.

Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS (BC/EFA) is the nation’s leading industry-based, not-for-profit AIDS fundraising and grant making organization.  Since its founding in 1988, BC/EFA has raised over $140 million for critically needed services for people with AIDS, HIV or HIV-related illnesses.

If you want more information on the bears or would like tickets for the Auction on February 14th, visit http://www.broadwaycares.org/events/bears.cfm

E-Mails went out today from BroadwayCares/Equity Fights Aids to those on their mailing list. When opened, one of the first pictures seen is of Clay Aiken holding the Sir Robin Bear which is representing Spamalot in the auction.

BC/EFA opened the on-line bidding for all the bears on January 23rd. At this time, only two bears have active bids; the Equus bear has a bid for $650.00 and the Sir Robin Bear has a bid for $1200.00. Last year, the Sir Robin Bear raised $17,000.00 and is rated as the third highest bid in the history of the Bear Auction.

The on-line bidding will continue until February 14th, 2009. There are many beautiful bears and most are autographed by top Broadway stars.

If you want to read more information about the bears, see our article called Cuddly Sir Robin, posted on January 23, 2009

Quote of the Day

It is not always about performance art, but about receiving positive energy from people with positive spirits. Sometimes we can see someone's spirit, and those are the people with great energy. Those are the people that get me through the day, especially on Broadway. -Clay Aiken
