Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world

Nelson Mandela

Clay Aiken graduated on Saturday, December 20, 2003, from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in special education from UNCC’s College of Education.
Clay obtained his degree during an afternoon ceremony at the school’s Halton Arena, and according to people in attendance at the ceremony, he was just another face among all of the black-robed graduates. Others disagreed and said he could be spotted because of his height and his signature spiked hair that stuck out from beneath his mortarboard.

Being the very last of the 593 graduates, Clay’s name was only mentioned as he walked across the stage. When he approached the stage, there were lots of flashbulbs that went off in the arena. As his name was announced, there was lots of applause with an occasional boo from a few hecklers. Because of his appearance at the commencement, the school was forced to impose a first-time limitation on tickets available to the grads. This was an unpopular policy with many of the students although it is commonplace at many universities.

James Woodward was the Chancellor of the university. He said, “One among you has received a bit more attention, and he would like to speak to his class.” He then asked Clay to join him on the stage.

Clay was humble, yet articulate as he spoke to the crowd saying,

“This has been an amazing year for me. This is more special to me than a lot of the things that have happened to me this year, because what happens here today says something to people. This is a day that makes for all of us a statement … how important it is to persevere and continue to work and strive to succeed.

Thank you for letting me be a part of this day. Congratulations and God bless. Thank you so much.”

His short speech was met with immediate and rousing applause.

After the ceremony, Clay held a short press conference where he spoke about the Bubel/Aiken Foundation. He presented a check from the foundation for $25,000 to the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation. The Council presents the President’s Volunteer Service Awards to people who demonstrate a sustained commitment to their community. The Foundation’s gift was given to provide awards to those who make a sustained commitment to serving people with developmental disabilities.

Clay’s graduation and his attendance at the ceremony spoke loudly at how important the event was to Clay and his family. That he was able to graduate with all the changes in his life showed determination and purpose. Congratulations to Clay Aiken for the 6 year anniversary of his college graduation.

WRAL covered the graduation and the following video is their report of the event.

Clay Aiken -Banking in New York!

Tuesday, July 26th, 2011

In July of 2003, Wachovia Bank, N.A., was one of America’s leading customer service banks and the largest retail bank on the East Coast. They opened two Manhattan retail financial centers on July 28th in Rockefeller Plaza and at Madison Avenue & 45th. The event included an official welcome from New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and American Idol celebrity Clay Aiken who, as a native of North Carolina, was invited to assist in the formal ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Wachovia’s Manhattan financial center grand-opening festivities were made more exciting by a surprise announcement from Clay Aiken. He announced that he would like to open the first official account in the name of his new Bubel/Aiken Foundation which he had just started. Clay stated that he was a long-time Wachovia customer and was pleased that now he would be able to find an ATM to use when he visited New York. Jim Fitzgerald, the regional president of Wachovia, announced that Wachovia was donating $10,000 to the Bubel/Aiken Foundation.

Mayor Bloomberg and Clay joined with the executives of Wachovia in a ribbon-cutting ceremony in Rockefeller Plaza. The Mayor teased Clay by showing a fan sign that said “Clay Aiken for Mayor” and said that he would support Clay at the end of his tour as mayor. There was a larger than expected crowd at the ceremony as many of Clay’s fans attended in hopes of seeing him.

Clay also attended the branch opening at 45th and Madison. Some workers at the bank sang “Amazing Grace” to Clay and according to those in attendance, it was beautiful and moving. The singers asked Clay to sing so he sang a verse or two of “This Is The Night.” It was an exciting time for the employees who were opening a new facility and hosting a new musical star.

Clay was in the middle of the American Idol tour when he made this visit to New York. The night before, he had been performing in Philadelphia and after the ceremonies in New York, Clay had to hurry to Washington DC for a concert that same night.

The following video shows Clay at the branch of the bank.  It shows the two young ladies who sang for him and also a bit of Clay singing This Is The Night.

Clay Aiken – America’s Promise Alliance

Saturday, June 11th, 2011

It has been exactly 13 weeks since Clay Aiken finished his concert in San Francisco and walked off the stage.  For Clay, it is a time to rejuvenate his body and mind, plan his next project and most importantly, enjoy being a daddy.

For fans, it seems like a long time and each person fills the space in different ways.

For me, I have had fun trying to update all the pictures, videos, articles, and blogs that have been living “somewhere” on my computer.  While doing this, I have found some wonderful things that I have forgotten about.  So…I am sharing one of those things with you today.

In June of 2004, Clay Aiken appeared at America’s Promise to Youth Gala.  Held in the Ronald Reagan Building in Washington D.C. this star-studded event was the first Gala for the organization.

The Gala honored six members of Congress for their commitment to youth.  The honorees were Senators Edward Kennedy, Ted Stevens and Hillary Rodham Clinton, and Representatives Deborah Pryce, Harold Ford, Jr. and Tom Osborne.

A young person selected to represent his or her home state or district introduced each Congressional honoree and Clay.  These seven young people, two of whom have developmental disabilities, were chosen for their exemplary service to their communities as well as their outstanding character

As part of a new partnership with America’s Promise , The Bubel/Aiken Foundation provided each youth presenter with a $1,500 scholarship.

The emcee of the program was country star, Naomi Judd.  The entertainment was presented by The Duke Ellington School of the Arts Chorus and Clay Aiken. Clay performed Measure of A Man and sang Bridge Over Troubled Water with the young chorus.

Fortunately, I have many pictures of the event.  The following are a few of the pictures from the prestigious event.

Clay Aiken And Hockey Are Not Strangers

By musicfan123 · Comments 10183(9)http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F2011%2F01%2F29%2Fclay-aiken-and-hockey-are-not-strangers%2FClay+Aiken+And+Hockey+Are+Not+Strangers2011-01-29+07%3A14%3A32musicfan123http%3A%2F%2Fwww.claynewsnetwork.com%2F%3Fp%3D10183
Saturday, January 29th, 2011

On Monday, January 24, 2011, it was announced that Clay Aiken would be singing the National Anthem at the NHL All-Star Game.  The game is scheduled for Sunday, January 30th at 4pm ET.  It will be held in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Since this announcement, it seems that some people have forgotten that hockey and Clay are not strangers.  Too bad they don’t remember a wonderful Sunday afternoon in December 2003 when Clay skated with 100 children at the RBC Center.

The event was planned so that children with and without special needs would have the opportunity to mingle together, offering an afternoon where they could learn from each other and make new friends.

Dawn Graham was a volunteer with the Bubel/Aiken Foundation and was at the event to help out. Graham had this to say to summarize the event:

“Clay spoke and skated with each of the children, asking their names, where they went to school, etc. He looked to have as much fun as they did! They were each outfitted with a specially made Bubel/Aiken Foundation jersey, and Clay was sporting a ‘Canes jersey with ‘Aiken 03’ on the back. Some of the children were not physically able to skate, so some of them were pushed across the ice on metal chairs.

The next day, Clay sang the National Anthem at the Carolina Hurricanes vs. Dallas Stars, NHL Hockey Game.  Wearing his red Canes jersey, Clay stood on a mat on the ice.  During the 1st break, Clay surprised the hockey fans by skating around the ice as he sang I Will Carry You…and there wasn’t even a stumble!!

During the second intermission, Clay stood on a scissor lift and sang Don’t Save It All For Christmas Day and The Way. Clay was off the ice because there is an NHL regulation on how much time a non-player can spend on the ice during the game. As Clay sang, the arena turned dark and the words “Clay Aiken” in lights circulated around the top of the arena. Clay ended the program by singing Invisible.

I wish that every person who doesn’t know Clay Aiken could read this blog.  If they knew him, they would be on their feet, cheering on Clay who is one of the most decent persons I know.

Clay was interviewed on WRAL in Raleigh on Friday morning.  It was a short interview, but friendly.  Take a listen.  You can hear it on the following YouTube.

Clay Aiken – Happy Birthday, UNICEF

By musicfan123 · Comments 10121(4)http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F2010%2F12%2F11%2Fclay-aiken-happy-birthday-unicef%2FClay+Aiken+-+Happy+Birthday%2C+UNICEF2010-12-11+07%3A23%3A23musicfan123http%3A%2F%2Fwww.claynewsnetwork.com%2F%3Fp%3D10121
Saturday, December 11th, 2010

64 years ago today, UNICEF (United Nations Children’s Fund) was created by the United Nation’s General Assembly. Its purpose was to provide emergency food, clothing and health care to the children in countries that had been devastated in World War Two.

UNICEF is headquartered in New York City and now provides long-term humanitarian and developmental assistance to children and mothers in developing countries.

The following short history of UNICEF can be found on their web page.

  • 1946 – Food to Europe… After World War II, European children face famine and disease. UNICEF is created in December 1946 by the United Nations to provide food, clothing and health care to them.
  • 1953 – UNICEF becomes a permanent part of the UN…The UN General Assembly extends UNICEF’s mandate indefinitely.  UNICEF begins a successful global campaign against yaws, a disfiguring disease affecting millions of children, and one that can be cured with penicillin.
  • 1954 – Danny Kaye…The movie star Danny Kaye becomes UNICEF’s “Ambassador at Large.”  His film, Assignment Children, about UNICEF’s work in Asia, is seen by more that 100 million people.
  • 1965 – Nobel Peace Prize…UNICEF is awarded the 1965 Nobel Peace Prize “for the promotion of brotherhood among nations.”
  • 2004 – Clay Aiken…UNICEF approached Clay after hearing about his involvement with his own charity.

Oct. 19, 2007, Blair Soden of ABC news wrote an article titled “How Involved Are Celebrity Charity Activists, and Do They Have Ulterior Motives?”   The article was popular because there were some celebrities that were trying to get some publicity by saying they were involved in charity work.  abcnews

Blair wrote a lot of positive information about Clay and how he became involved in UNICEF.  The following is the long article from SODEN.  It really helped people understand what the UNICEF Ambassadors do and how they work within the tight rules and regulations of UNICEF.

The pictures are everywhere — celebrities dressed down in earth-tone T-shirts and jeans, covered in dirt and looking incredibly out of place among a group of villagers in some Third-World country; it’s a far cry from the red carpet.

Now Paris Hilton says she, too, is jumping on the humanitarian aid bandwagon as she plans her upcoming trip to Rwanda. Some are questioning Hilton’s motives for linking up with a humanitarian aid organization, wondering if she’s only doing it in effort to revive her tarnished reputation, or if she is truly involved in the charity Playing for Good’s cause.

Hilton’s recent entrance into the world of charitable giving raises the question: Are celebrities lending more than just their names to a cause, or is it all about the photo-op?

Celebs and Causes Go Way Back

Celebrities’ association with humanitarian aid organizations is nothing new. Danny Kaye was one of the first actors to join a charitable organization when he was named a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef) in 1954. The comedian paved the way for other entertainers, among them Audrey Hepburn, Sarah Jessica Parker, David Beckham and Clay Aiken.

While Unicef was one of the first international aid programs, as need spread throughout the world other organizations started popping up, adding to the list of charitable celebrities.

Now organizations are even being established by celebrities. In 2006, actor Don Cheadle founded the Enough project with human rights activist John Prendergast.

Prendergast said the celebrity attachment is an integral part of his organization.

“Celebrities are like major recruiters to the humanitarian cause,” said Prendergast. “They certainly increase the number of people and donors interested in the cause.”

Lisa Szarkowski, who heads the ambassador program for Unicef agreed.

“Celebrities have the ear and attention of the public,” said Szarkowski. “They tend to command more attention than talking heads from our organization.”

Attention that leads to big bucks. Aiken asked fans to donate money to Unicef to help the children in Lebanon and raised more than $75,000 in 24 hours.

So getting involved in causes may help celebrities draw attention to a specific need in some other part of the world as well as get their names in the spotlight — but just how involved are they?

How Do Celebrities Get Involved?

It’s not easy to be selected as a Unicef ambassador. The group sets high standards for celebrities to live up to.

“In terms of becoming an ambassador, it’s definitely a process,” said Szarkowski. “We like to work with people who are committed to the cause and the mission and to align themselves with us for the long term.”

Aiken made the cut when he was named a Unicef ambassador in 2004. The organization approached Aiken after hearing of his involvement with his own charity, the Bubel/Aiken foundation that helps young people with special needs.

Aiken said he felt obligated to help those in need.

“One of the most important responsibilities that you have if you’re answering to the public is that you try to use that position in a way that serves the people you’re trying to entertain,” said Aiken. “I think you have a responsibility when you realize you have kids watching you. … You can set an example to have kids doing drugs, or you can set an example to have kids helping their communities or their world.”

Preparing for a Trip

Despite some common misconceptions, celebrity representatives don’t just jet set off for a photo-op; they prepare for months before taking a trip.

“We prepare them pretty well,” said Szarkowski. “People don’t become ambassadors or supporters of ours unless they go through a process of learning about us and engaging with us.”

Celebrities sit through classes to learn about Unicef and all the various issues that threaten children’s survival around the world.

“We study as much as we possibly can before we go,” said Aiken. “And I study after I go, because I want to be an expert on it. I think it’s a disservice to the country you’re going to and the children you’re trying to help if you don’t know what’s going on and can’t speak knowledgably about your experience.’

Aiken said the preparation is necessary in order to meet with health ministers and other officials on these trips.

“It wouldn’t behoove anyone if we just went in to take pictures and came back,” said Aiken. “The goal of all these visits and the reason we sit through extremely long sessions sometimes is so when we come back we know what we’re talking about.”

What Really Happens on Field Visits

Aiken didn’t know what to expect during his first visit to Uganda. He walked into the minimalist community center, where he expected nobody to know his name. Suddenly, he was greeted with bows from the crowd.

“When we walked in, they kept calling me your excellency,” laughed Aiken. “I think both visits we’ve been on there have been misconceptions about how important I am.”

All joking aside, no matter how famous — or infamous — a celebrity is, celebrity support is essential.

But with so many problem areas across the globe, how do celebrities decide which country they want to visit? For most, the decision is made based on where the greatest need is at that time.

“The celebrities we work with want to go where they can be most helpful,” said Szarkowski. “We’re fortunate to have that caliber of people who basically say to us, ‘Tell me where you want me to go.’”

In her eight years at Unicef, she said she’s never had a celebrity refuse to go where they were asked to go. And the places they’re asked to go certainly don’t come with luxe accommodations.

“It’s usually a tent somewhere. That’s our standard accommodation,” said Szarkowski.

Aiken and others pay their own way when they travel on behalf of Unicef.  However, once they reach their destination, they don’t have the need for many expenses. Most nights they’re sleeping in tents on the ground.

In addition to the bare bones travel accommodations, celebrities must cope with extremely dangerous situations. In order to avoid conflict, Prendergast said every minute detail of the trip must be mapped out.

“These trips have to be planned very well to ensure maximum impact and security,” said Prendergast.

Security is something Hilton has expressed concern about regarding her upcoming trip, which has some people questioning her motivations.

“I’m scared, yeah. I’ve heard it’s really dangerous,” she said. “I’ve never been on a trip like this before.”

All Attention Is Good Attention

Hilton will be filming scenes for her new reality TV show while she’s in Rwanda, which has left some questioning the genuineness of her visit. But not everyone is upset about celebrities like Hilton lending their name to causes without much further involvement, if that is so in her case.

“I wouldn’t judge people for what their motivations are,” said Szarkowski. “We need everyone with a voice to help us get behind that and change that reality.”

But, Aiken cautions, a focus on one organization or charity is important to the public.

“I get requests from every organization to come and do this or that,” said Aiken. “It’s not that I don’t have a passion for kids with cancer, because I do. I feel like you can dilute your message if you talk about too many things.”

While it remains to be seen how involved Hilton will be with her organization of choice, one celebrity who no doubt has stolen the humanitarian aid spotlight is in it for all the right reasons, according to Aiken.

“I look to Angelina Jolie as a prime example of someone who is doing an amazing job,” said Aiken. “She really has a passion and she goes in and makes a point to educate herself about what’s going on and that’s the only way to do it.”

Congratulations to UNICEF on your first 64 years. You have made the world a better place for all children. You were really smart to choose Clay Aiken as an Ambassador.

Clay Aiken – “I Won’t Fall! I Won’t Fall!”

The United States Figure Skating Nationals have been taking place all week.  As an avid fan of figure skating, I have been watching every moment I can.  Thursday night, the ladies skated their short program and it took almost 4 hours.

As I was watching, I couldn’t help but think about Clay Aiken and his escapades on the ice.

The first time we heard about Clay on the ice was on December 21, 2003.  Called Skate With Clay, the Bubel/Aiken Foundation and the Carolina Hurricanes sponsored a great afternoon of skating.  Clay spent the afternoon at the RBC Center, ice-skating with 100 children from the local area.  The purpose of the event was to mingle children with and without special needs together.  It gave them the opportunity to learn from each other and make new friends.

According to Dawn Graham, a volunteer from the foundation:

“Clay spoke and skated with each of the children, asking their names, where they went to school, etc. He looked to have as much fun as they did! They were each outfitted with a specially made Bubel/Aiken Foundation jersey, and Clay was sporting a ‘Canes jersey with ‘Aiken 03’ on the back. Some of the children were not physically able to skate, so some of them were pushed across the ice on metal chairs…”

The next evening, Clay performed at the Carolina Hurricanes/Dallas Stars Hockey game.  After singing the Star Spangled Banner, Clay entertained the crowd with a short concert.  The highlight of the evening occurred during the first intermission.  Seemingly without any concern, Clay took to the ice and sang “I Will Carry You” as he skated around the arena.  Besides sounding wonderful, Clay skated with confidence and got a huge round of applause.

Clay made a quick appearance on ice at Rockefeller Center.  When he was in town for the Christmas Tree Lighting, Clay tried to get in a short skate.  He probably hoped he wouldn’t get caught, but……he did and we got some cute pictures!

The next time we saw Clay on the ice was in Las Vegas on November 6, 2007.  Clay was tapped to be the exclusive musical guest on “Capital One Holiday Celebration on Ice.”  Clay was joined by many World and National champions as they celebrated the holiday season.

The program was broadcast on TV on Christmas Day.  At that time, the audience got to see some back stage film of Clay getting a skating lesson from Olympian Sasha Cohen.  The program ended with Clay joining the skaters as they took their bows by skating around the arena.  It looked like Clay was having a great time.

I wonder if Clay has been skating recently.  He seemed so at ease on the ice and seemed to have a good time.

Are you watching the US Figure Skating Nationals??  You can catch the ladies on NBC on Saturday night at 9pm (Eastern Time).  The girls are skating for placement on the Olympic team.

The following videos show Clay as he makes his way around the ice.

Clay Aiken – A Leading Voice For Inclusion

By musicfan123 · Comments 5810(22)http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F2009%2F08%2F06%2Fclay-aiken-a-leading-voice-for-inclusion%2FClay+Aiken+-+A+Leading+Voice+For+Inclusion2009-08-06+07%3A44%3A51musicfan123http%3A%2F%2Fwww.claynewsnetwork.com%2F%3Fp%3D5810
Thursday, August 6th, 2009

It started out as a project for college graduation.  Today, it is a leading voice for inclusion so that all children can be fully immersed in society.  It is the National Inclusion Project.

By this time, most of us know the history and the hard work that has been put into the National Inclusion Project. And I am sure we all want to congratulate Clay Aiken, Diane Bubel and the entire staff of the National Inclusion Project for all their success.  It has been a joy to watch their vision become reality.

Like many of you, I spent some time reading the new web-site for the NIP.  It is all very impressive.   I was amazed at the incredible list of names that are tied to the Project in its quest for inclusion.

The National Inclusion Project works with many different organizations including:

“YMCAs, Best Buddies International, Boys & Girls Clubs, CampFire USA, 4H, the ARC – as well as many other local parks and recreation departments, community centers, and privately-run programs.”

And look at the impressive list of institutions that have formed partnerships with The National Inclusion Project.  They include:

“Johns Hopkins University’s National Center for Summer Learning, the University of Massachusetts-Boston’s Center for Social Development and Education, the University of New Hampshire’s Institute on Disability, the University of Minnesota’s Institute on Community Integration, and the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill’s Frank Porter Graham Child Development Center.”

Next, I visited the Annual Report.  It was interesting to read about the 35 programs across the country where children of all abilities have a chance to play and learn together.

Perhaps the most impressive statement on the page is short, but telling:

“During the financial crisis of 2008, the National Inclusion Project managed funds very conservatively and did not experience any investment losses.  In addition, 89% of every dollar spent went directly to inclusive programs.”

This makes it easy to decide to support the Project, especially when you know the money is being used correctly.

If you haven’t had a chance, take a look at the new web-site. It is full of interesting facts and you will come away with a feeling of pride for this great accomplishment.  Clay, Diane and their dedicated staff have done so much in bringing awareness of inclusion to the public.

Congratulations to Clay Aiken and Diane Bubel!!  Today, the following press announcement was posted on the Official Fan Club!

Bubel/Aiken becomes National Inclusion Project

We are so proud to launch the National Inclusion Project. As our foundation grows, so does its impact. In order to better reach the ever growing goals we have for this foundation, we felt that a new name would better suit our position as a national leader on inclusion as well as recognize the Foundation’s start and the efforts of its faithful supporters.

The National Inclusion Project is poised to continue to make an impact with thousands of children nationwide as well as raise the national consciousness about the need for and benefits of inclusion. We are excited beyond measure to see Clay’s original “project” become one that so many people have invested time, energy, and dollars in to see doors opened for children who may have never gotten the opportunity to participate in life the way their peers do. The National Inclusion Project is moving forward hand-in-hand with supporters, families, program providers, and other advocates to see the vision of full inclusion nationwide become a reality. Please join us in our push to make a difference in communities all over the country.

For all of us that have watched a dream become a reality, today is real celebration.  We all look forward to more and more exciting information from the National Inclusion Project, a real leader for inclusion.  For more information, be sure and visit the National Inclusion Project.

Clay also blogged at the OFC.  He seems so excited about this project!!

Quote of the Day

It is not always about performance art, but about receiving positive energy from people with positive spirits. Sometimes we can see someone's spirit, and those are the people with great energy. Those are the people that get me through the day, especially on Broadway. -Clay Aiken
