Clay Aiken – It Started Out As A Dream

By musicfan123 · Comments 5529(17)http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F2009%2F07%2F16%2Fclay-aiken-it-started-out-as-a-dream%2FClay+Aiken+-+It+Started+Out+As+A+Dream2009-07-16+07%3A40%3A42musicfan123http%3A%2F%2Fwww.claynewsnetwork.com%2F%3Fp%3D5529

It started out as a dream for Clay Aiken and finally became a reality in the summer of 2004.  Camp Gonzo was alive and well at the West Cabarrus YMCA in Concord, North Carolina.

The Bubel/Aiken Foundation launched a new program with the YMCA to give children with disabilities an amazing opportunity.  Camp Gonzo got its name from Clay’s camp nickname and the summer program focused on inclusion, where children with and without disabilities interact.

“To actually come in and see the kids actually doing it is something that I had envisioned and dreamed of years before all this happened while working at the Y in Raleigh,” Aiken said.

The counselors at Camp Gonzo were specially trained for dealing with children with disabilities. Since this was a new program, the staff was not sure how it would work. But the camp was a huge success and things worked out well.

When talking to Lynda Loveland, Clay said of the plan:

“It’s not our goal to try this and then give up. If we had tried it and it didn’t work, we would have tweaked it and made it work next year. But we’re really lucky because it’s worked so well.”

The Bubel/Aiken Foundation was lucky to form the partnership with The West Cabarras YMCA.  Located in the Afton Village area, the facility opened in 2003 and includes an indoor lap pool, indoor water park, fitness center, gymnasium, multi-purpose room, child watch, teen center, sports firlds, indoor climbing wall and more.  This branch also offers group fitmess, swim lessons and chidfcare programs.  The NorthEast Medical Center Outpatient Rehab Center is also located at the West Cabarrus YMCA .

Chad Troxell is a RN at NorthEast Medical Center.  He volunteered his time to participate in the two-week camp as the camp nurse.  Troxell, who wears two hearing aids, grew up appreciating the fact that it is sometimes hard to be accepted when you’re not the same as others around you.

Troxell was excited about the camp and was impressed with Clay Aiken and his passion for working with disabled children.  He is convinced that securing friends at Camp Gonzo will really help their integration into the upcoming school year.

Troxell’s co-workers at NEMC re-arranged their schedules to allow him to attend the two-week camp as the full-time nurse.  “The ability to serve as a professional nurse and as a role model is a plus,” Troxell said.

Well, it isn’t called Camp Gonzo anymore.  Now, it is a successful program called “Let’s ALL Play” and in the summer of 2009, there are 32 camps around the USA that create more inclusive communities where they are.

It is wonderful to watch a dream come true and it is even better to help the dream be fulfilled.

Remember, we can do a lot to help.  We can use GoodSearch, save our ink cartridges,  be involved with Wrapping For Inclusion and so many other things.  Visit the BAF for more ideas.

The following video is a wonderful interview with Clay and Lynda Loveland.  It was on TV on July 16th, 2004

Clay Aiken – More Than A Pop Star

By musicfan123 · Comments 4881(42)http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F2009%2F06%2F04%2Fclay-aiken-more-than-a-pop-star%2FClay+Aiken+-+More+Than+A+Pop+Star2009-06-04+19%3A30%3A43musicfan123http%3A%2F%2Fwww.claynewsnetwork.com%2F%3Fp%3D4881
Thursday, June 4th, 2009

When the general public thinks about Clay Aiken, they usually think……American Idol runner-up, recording artist, Broadway star, TV star, father and gay man.  But one of the most important parts of Clay’s life is missing from that list………founder and member of the Board of Directors of a successful Foundation.

The Bubel/Aiken Foundation started as a school project, but became a reality on July 28, 2003 when the official announcement of the creation of the foundation was made by Clay Aiken.

From its humble beginnings, the Bubel/Aiken Foundation has grown into the leading organization that promotes the inclusion of all children in all areas.  And, the Foundation is also a leader in investing in the education community by providing services and financial assistance, and creating awareness of the needs of all children.

According to the official records, the Foundation has invested over one million dollars to expand Let’s ALL Play across the country.

“The goal of Let’s ALL Play is to assist child and youth organizations in moving toward full inclusion. In 2004, the inclusive recreational experience for children with and without disabilities was instituted by the Foundation.”

The Foundation is supporting 32 recreational programs in 2009. The support comes in the form of a program model and Foundation training in addition to grant funding.  Because of the Foundation’s support, children in 20 different states across the country will participate in inclusive programs for the first time.

On March 6, 2009, the Mitsubishi Electric America Foundation (MEAF) announced $360,000 in new and continuing grants, raising the total investment in the Foundation’s five-year Inclusion Initiative to $3.2 million. This inclusion project is a joint venture between The Bubel/Aiken Foundation and the National Center for Summer Learning at Johns Hopkins University.

Because the Bubel/Aiken Foundation was started by a celebrity, there has been much scrutiny of the financial records of the Foundation.  Each time there has been a question, the Foundation and the State of North Carolina has proven that all is well with the charity.

According to the official records filed by the Foundation to both the state and federal governments, the Foundation is doing very well.  It is rated well for its use of funds and keeps the expenses to a minimum

The following are the numbers for 2007.

Program Expenses               81.9%

Administrative Expenses     15.6%

Fundraising Expenses         2.3%

Clay Aiken announced last year that the Foundation was going to change their name to something that would reflect more on the purpose of the foundation.  We look forward to hearing more about that change.

It is wonderful to see Clay Aiken use his celebrity in such a positive way.  There is no way of knowing how many young people have been positively influenced by the opportunities given by The Bubel/Aiken Foundation.

Clay Aiken – Use Goodsearch

GoodSearch is a search engine which donates 50% percent of its revenue to the charities and schools designated by its users. It’s a simple and compelling concept. You use GoodSearch exactly as you would any other search engine. Because it’s powered by Yahoo!, you get proven search results. The money GoodSearch donates to your cause comes from its advertisers.  The users and the organizations do not spend a dime!

The Bubel/Aiken Foundation has been a part of GoodSearch for a few years. It is an easy way for all of us to help raise some needed funds for Clay Aiken’s dream.  Do you use GoodSeach? If you haven’t yet, why not give it a try. Also, try GoodShop.  It raises money too.

The following table shows the totals for 2009 through June 2nd. Wouldn’t it be great if we were able to double May’s total this month?  With  all the many people that support Clay and his foundation, we should be able to do this.   Lets give it a try and see if we can make a difference.

Clay Aiken – Dancing Like the Stars

Friday, April 10th, 2009

April 26, 2009 is the date of a fun and exciting fund raiser for the Bubel/Aiken Foundation.  In conjunction with the A Step to Gold International Ballroom, the foundation will host “Dancing Like The Stars” at the Southern Women’s Show.  Held at 1:oopm, many local Raleigh celebrities will compete in a dance competition to benefit TBAF.

Wes Hohenstein and Penn Holderness both work at NBC-17 and they are funny guys who will be participating in the competition.  Wes thinks that he and Penn are “the two most uncoordinated employees at NBC-17.”  However, they are still practicing and getting ready to show off their moves in the competition.  Wes says he hopes to raise lots of money for the Foundation.

Other celebrities participating in “Dancing Like The Stars” include representatives from The News and Observer and WRAL.  Many thanks should go out the the news outlets in the Raleigh area for supporting the Bubel/Aiken Foundation.

The winner of the competition will be determined by votes from the people of the community.  Donations count as votes, so if you have a favorite celebrity, be sure and donate to ensure their win.  Donations and votes can be submitted on-line or at the event.  Whoever thought of this unique fundraiser should be excited to see it happening.

Wes Hohenstein wrote a very funny blog about his participation in “Dancing Like The Stars.”  You can read it  HERE

Here is some rehearsal footage from the Dancing Like The Stars 2009 page on the TBAF website:

Clay Aiken – A Champion of Change

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

The Bubel/Aiken Foundation has hosted many wonderful events, but one of the most talked about occasions took place on March 31, 2007.

The beautiful Cardinal Club in Raleigh, North Carolina, hosted the “Champions of Change Gala.”  The purpose of the evening was to celebrate and recognize the achievements of some special people and to support the foundation and its mission of inclusion.

The evening started with an hour of cocktails and hors d’oeuvres.  If you were a Platinum or Gold sponsor, you had the opportunity to have your picture taken with Clay Aiken.  During this time, there was a silent auction taking place in the Cardinal Club lobby

After a delicious dinner, the celebration moved to the North Dining Room for the presentation of the “Champion of Change Awards.”    Lynda Loveland, who was with WRAL at the time, served as the Mistress of Ceremonies.  In her introductory words, Lynda spoke about the foundation and about the program for the evening.

The audience heard three wonderful speeches.  Diane Bubel spoke about inclusion and touched the audience when she spoke of her son, Mike.  Clay Aiken spoke with passion as he reminded the audience that everyone can be a Voice of Change. Kristy Barnes spoke about the programs supported by TBAF.  She introduced a video that highlighted “Coming Soon” events for TBAF.

An important part of the evening was the presentation of the Champions of Change awards.  Jonathan Bunzey, the Youth honoree, Jim Johnson, from State Farm Insurance, and the Voices of Beta Alpha Volunteers were all honored for their work towards opening doors for inclusion.

Next up on the program was the Live Auction.  According to the fans in attendance, the auction was amazing.  Clay joined the Auctioneer in an effort to raise as much money as possible for TBAF.  It was reported that Clay did whatever he could to raise the bid.  “Clay was making faces at you and egging you on, which of course was driving the prices higher and higher just for the individual attention it got you,” said one of the fans.  A surprise auction was held for Clay’s rings. He took them off his fingers and actually held them in his teeth, kissed them and the bids kept rising.  Clay seemed to know just what to do!

At the conclusion of the live auction, Clay and Quiana Parler entertained the audience with some wonderful songs.  They were accompanied by Jesse Vargas.  Clay sang I Can’t Make You Love Me, Unchained Melody and sang The Prayer as a duet with Quiana.

According to all accounts, it was a wonderful evening. Over $310,000 was raised for TBAF and the summer camps program and everyone remembers that March 31, 2007 was the introduction of the full beard.

Watch this wonderful video of the auction highlights.  It will put a smile on your face!!

Kelsey Thacker Helps Clay Aiken’s Foundation

Kelsey Thacker is a sophomore at the University of Alabama, Huntsville.  She wants to become a lawyer and loves to write.  She also is someone who sees a problem and does what she can to help.

She read about the Bubel/Aiken Foundation on the book jacket in Clay Aiken’s CD. “[I] felt that the aim of the charity was a very worthwhile one,” said Thacker.  After visiting the internet site of the foundation, she decided that she had to do something to help. She decided to raise money for the organization.  After much research, she read how others were collecting empty ink cartridges for cash for the foundation.  Kelsey thought that a college was a great place to collect the cartridges as computer printers are used all the time by students and faculty.

Kelsey placed collection boxes in the lobbies of some of the classroom buildings and in some of the Residence Halls.  She also placed a box in the University Lobby Center to make it easy for off campus people to drop off the cartridges.

Kelsey knows a great deal about The Bubel/Aiken Foundation and hopes that she will be able to help with this project.  She also suggests that others might want to start their own fundraiser for the foundation.

Kelsey seems to be the kind of young lady that would make Clay Aiken proud.  He is lucky to have her on his team.

Clay Aiken Helps All Kids

Congratulations to the Bubel/Aiken Foundation.  According to TBAF, the Mitsubishi Electric America Foundation awarded a $40,000 grant to them for a joint venture with The National Center for Summer Learning at Johns Hopkins University.

The Bubel/Aiken Foundation and the National Center for Summer Learning have been working together for 3 years to create a distinct and powerful force for change in summer learning for all children.  They will be developing a summer learning curriculum that will help summer camps all over learn how to fully include youth with disabilities.

“We are very pleased to incorporate this project into our Inclusion Initiative, expanding inclusion outreach to the critical area of summer learning,” said Rayna Aylward, MEAF’s executive director. “The Bubel/Aiken Foundation and the National Center for Summer Learning add valuable experience and focus to the inclusion mix, and their collaboration will enrich the lives of many thousands of youth with and without disabilities.”

Quote of the Day

It is not always about performance art, but about receiving positive energy from people with positive spirits. Sometimes we can see someone's spirit, and those are the people with great energy. Those are the people that get me through the day, especially on Broadway. -Clay Aiken
