It’s the Dog Days of Summer…it’s hot…it’s muggy…and the kids are getting restless.  For those of us in California, the kids are returning to school…it’s that time!

Some years ago I thought summer was:  sprinklers, Popsicles, bug bites, bare feet and lots of laughter.  But my remembrances of summer changed drastically during the summer of 2004.  Now my summer memories include concert tours and television concert series.  Oh…what fun memories!

Clay Aiken was a musical guest for three years on the Summer Concert Series sponsored by Good Morning America.

On July 2nd, 2004, GMA held their concert series in Bryant Park. There were over 3,000 people in the audience and it was reported to be the largest audience ever for a GMA concert.  Clay sang Invisible, I Will Carry You and I Survived You.

The next summer, Clay was again on the Summer Concert Series.  He was back at Bryant Park on July 29th, 2005.  The concert was the morning after opening night of the Jukebox Tour. Clay sang Invisible, Suspicious Minds, and Back For More. According to those in attendance, Clay sang Twisting The Night Away in the warm-up. There was another large audience and Clay seemed to enjoy joking with the excited audience members.

The third time Clay was on the GMA Summer Concert Series was on May 7th, 2008.  This time the concert was held in-studio. The studio was packed with fans. Clay had a short interview with Diane Sawyer but she had a bad case of laryngitis so Robin Roberts had to step in. Clay sang On My Way Here and Ashes.  It’s too bad that Ashes was not broadcast but only put on the ABC website.

Which one of these concerts was your favorite?  Did you get to attend one of these concerts in person?  I love these summer memories!!

Clay Aiken – “They Serve Nasty Animals”

Whoever thought they would see Clay Aiken beating up another celebrity on TV? Well, it happened, sort of, on June 28th, 2004. That was the evening that Clay was a guest on the Jimmy Kimmel Live television show.

Clay was the featured guest and was interviewed by Jimmy. He performed in a silly skit and sang two songs.

According to fans who were in the live audience, the evening was like a huge celebration of Clay Aiken and his music. Most of the audience was made up of Clay fans and they were excited in their response to all that was happening.

There were two stories from the interview that have been repeated and remembered often. The first was about the old man in the airport who hit Clay with his cane. Clay seemed indignant and said that it really hurt.

The second story was about the food in Ireland. According to Clay, they serve “nasty animals” and that even if you order the food well-done, it still is walking all over the plate. He even complained about McDonalds and said it just wasn’t the same.

After Clay’s interview, he stayed on the stage while Jimmy interviewed Dylan Walsh. Poor man didn’t stand a chance as most of the audience was more interested in watching Clay and his reactions than listening to Dylan’s answers.

Clay ended the program by singing two songs, “I Will Carry You” and “Kyrie”. The audience, both in the studio and at home, thought that Clay rocked the house. He seemed to be in great spirits and great voice. He seemed to enjoy the exuberant audience and connected with them. The audience got to hear all of Kyrie, but, unfortunately, the TV audience only saw a short clip of the song as the time ran out.

Clay and Jimmy really hit it off this night and both seemed to enjoy the interview and each other’s company. It was the beginning of a great relationship.

We have put together a playlist for this program. There are 4 videos. Use the arrows on the right and left to move from one video to the next. This visit to Kimmel was a wonderful show. Enjoy!!

Clay Aiken And Hockey Are Not Strangers

By musicfan123 · Comments 10183(9)http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F2011%2F01%2F29%2Fclay-aiken-and-hockey-are-not-strangers%2FClay+Aiken+And+Hockey+Are+Not+Strangers2011-01-29+07%3A14%3A32musicfan123http%3A%2F%2Fwww.claynewsnetwork.com%2F%3Fp%3D10183
Saturday, January 29th, 2011

On Monday, January 24, 2011, it was announced that Clay Aiken would be singing the National Anthem at the NHL All-Star Game.  The game is scheduled for Sunday, January 30th at 4pm ET.  It will be held in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Since this announcement, it seems that some people have forgotten that hockey and Clay are not strangers.  Too bad they don’t remember a wonderful Sunday afternoon in December 2003 when Clay skated with 100 children at the RBC Center.

The event was planned so that children with and without special needs would have the opportunity to mingle together, offering an afternoon where they could learn from each other and make new friends.

Dawn Graham was a volunteer with the Bubel/Aiken Foundation and was at the event to help out. Graham had this to say to summarize the event:

“Clay spoke and skated with each of the children, asking their names, where they went to school, etc. He looked to have as much fun as they did! They were each outfitted with a specially made Bubel/Aiken Foundation jersey, and Clay was sporting a ‘Canes jersey with ‘Aiken 03’ on the back. Some of the children were not physically able to skate, so some of them were pushed across the ice on metal chairs.

The next day, Clay sang the National Anthem at the Carolina Hurricanes vs. Dallas Stars, NHL Hockey Game.  Wearing his red Canes jersey, Clay stood on a mat on the ice.  During the 1st break, Clay surprised the hockey fans by skating around the ice as he sang I Will Carry You…and there wasn’t even a stumble!!

During the second intermission, Clay stood on a scissor lift and sang Don’t Save It All For Christmas Day and The Way. Clay was off the ice because there is an NHL regulation on how much time a non-player can spend on the ice during the game. As Clay sang, the arena turned dark and the words “Clay Aiken” in lights circulated around the top of the arena. Clay ended the program by singing Invisible.

I wish that every person who doesn’t know Clay Aiken could read this blog.  If they knew him, they would be on their feet, cheering on Clay who is one of the most decent persons I know.

Clay was interviewed on WRAL in Raleigh on Friday morning.  It was a short interview, but friendly.  Take a listen.  You can hear it on the following YouTube.

The program started out with a very funny skit that showed Clay beating up Jimmy because Jimmy had said so many demeaning jokes about Clay.  Clay threw Jimmy against the wall and repeatedly “kicked him” in the head.  The spoof was well done and appreciated by the entire audience.

During the interview, Clay talked about his friend from home who was joining him to help out.  He also recalled how he was forgetting everything….his wallet, his keys, his passport.  He was hoping his friend would help him out and help him to become more organized.

There were two stories from the interview that have been repeated and remembered often.  The first was about the old man in the airport who hit Clay with his cane.  Clay seemed indignant and said that it really hurt.

Quote of the Day

It is not always about performance art, but about receiving positive energy from people with positive spirits. Sometimes we can see someone's spirit, and those are the people with great energy. Those are the people that get me through the day, especially on Broadway. -Clay Aiken
