Sunday, May 15th, 2011

In May of 2004, Clay Aiken was busy with professional duties almost every day.  He performed on American Idol,  sang at Wango Tango, performed on many TV shows including The Tonight Show, The Early Show, Ryan Seacrests Show, and Entertainment Tonight, sang with Heather Headley for Broadway Cares and hosted Fantasia’s hometown party in Greensboro.  Clay was also featured in at least five magazines during the month.

On May 15th, Blades On Ice, a popular Figure skating magazine, published an article that featured Clay and his special day of skating for the BAF/National Inclusion Project.  The article was positive and provided Clay the opportunity to share information about the BAF.

American Idol’s Clay Aiken Dons Skates for Charity
By Marge Reynolds

Clay Aiken, whose first CD (Measure of a Man) recently shipped triple platinum, came in second on American Idol 2 last May but his star soared well beyond that Fox show in the muisic pop world ever since. BLADES On Ice magazine caught up with him when this auburn haired pop sensation took to the ice in his hometown of Raleigh, North Carolina to venture into the skating realm.

“Now why is everybody thinking I am going to fall out there? I’ve gone roller and ice skating as a YMCA counselor so I have skated a little before,” said Aiken with a laugh.

The 25 year old Aiken donned hockey skates December 21-22 when his foundation, the Bubel Aiken Foundation held a skating/hockey fundraiser in conjunction with the NHL’s Carolina Hurricanes Kind N’ Community Foundation at the Raleigh North Carolina’s RBC Center. These two foundations announced a formal parnership just prior to their first public joint event at a press conference.

Aiken said, “It is a thrill for me to have such support from my hometown. I am excited about our partnership and the opportunitites we will bring together to children with special needs.

“We want to break down those walls and erase the lines that divide kids with and without disablitities. I am very thankful to the Hurricanes for the opportunity to help spread the word about The Bubel Aiken Foundation.”

On Sunday afternoon, immediately following the Hurricanes “Skate with the “Canes” charity event, Aiken took to the ice with foundation volunteers, YMCA staff, family and friends along with 100 children for “Skate with Clay.” Fifty participants with a special need disability and 50 “regular kids” were selected via sign up at one of the local YMCA branches, the Banks D. Kerr Family YMCA, two weeks prior.

Most participants were local North Carolina residents but several traveled great distances from other states, including Minnesota. Children received a specially designed Bubel Aiken Hurricanes jersey that matched the one Aiken wore.

During this skating activity Aiken’s face lit up as the children approached him, particularly those who had special needs as his degree is in special education. Ever sensitive to the special needs participants, when the crowd around him would grow large, he left the rink with his bodyguard (Jerome) and popped up in a new area.

“We have children both with and without disabilities who will do this activity together. It’s not about one group of kids or one group of adults. It’s about everybody doing things together and being included and breaking down the barriers,” said Aiken.

Wachovia Bank sponsored underwrote all their expenses for this charity event according to the bank’s marketing director, John Ward. Aiken first formally announced on July 28, 2003 the birth of his BAF foundation at a Wachovia Bank appearance in NYC.

Aiken also performed on skates to a sold-out crowd between periods during the December 22 hockey game of the Carolina Hurricanes against Dallas Stars and his foundation benefited from ticket sales.

“I am very excited to be here today,” said Aiken. “Each person has a purpose and I feel like this is one of the reasons I’ve been so fortunate to do this.”

For this game 200 seats were sold in two boxes that had been donated by the Hurricanes. Aiken then visited the donor boxes briefly during the second period of the hockey game. according to Emma Bennett, Community Relations Manager of the Hurricanes, “A large percentage of any ticket sold, after we first began planning this a month prior, were also donated to the Bubel Aiken Foundation by the Hurricanes.

Following the hockey game, Aiken briefly met Olympic Champion, Kristi Yamaguchi by the elevators reserved for his use during this hockey game appearance. Yamaguchi who owns his CD and also resides in Raleigh said, “He seems like a very nice guy. I hear his music all time on Raleigh radio. He has an amazing voice and is very talented.”

He first sang the Star Spangled Banner wearing skates just inside the rink barriers prior to the game’s start but after the first period he came out singing I Will Carry You from his hit CD and continued skating throughout this number. According to the arena staff, an NHL rule affects the length of time an individual other than the players can be on the ice, so for the second period where he sang three additional songs, he sang from a huge lift by the Zamboni entrance.

Ever the perfectionist, Aiken practiced beforehand at the Rockefeller Center outdoor rink while in NYC. He said, “I hope I don’t fall today. I practiced at Rockefeller Center and I did pretty well. We had to outrun somebody at one point.”

Aiken announced plans to launch a national YMCA program in conjunction with the Bubel Aiken Foundation that will be tested first in North Carolina for inclusion of special needs children in YMCA programs. “We wanted to do this locally (first) with local YMCA’s and eventually want to take it nationally,” said Aiken.

Aiken draws from his own experiences with YMCA programs and that motivated him to have the two organizations work together.

“From my own experience at the ‘Y’ I saw kids being turned away from programs because their staff was not trained or didn’t have the correct ratio to work with kids with special needs in the same environment, and that is where our motivation comes from,” said Aiken.

The mission statement of The Bubel Aiken Foundation is to provide services and financial assistance to facilitate fully the integration of children with disabilities into the life environment of those without.

Aiken previously toured as part of the American Idol 2 ensemble early last summer and his popularity continues to swell at a rapid pace. He graced the covers of Rolling Stone, Entertainment Weekly and had major features in Time Magazine, People Magazine, and just about every teen magazine imaginable. He appeared on Saturday Night Live and nearly all the major talk shows.

Aiken got his feet wet with several radio station concert appearances in December around the country for three of four songs before joining forces with American Idol from the first season, Kelly Clarkson for their joint Independent tour. This duo toured 30 cities, beginning on February 22 in Charlotte, N.C. and concluding in St. Paul, Minn, on April 16.

During this tour they both met up with the Hughes family following the Long Island concert on March 4. “Clay and Kelly were arguing over whom was the bigger figure skating fan when they met Sarah backstage just after the concert. They both were fantastic in concert and it was so much fun to meet them,” said her sister Emily Hughes.

Aiken has publicly mentioned the possibility of a second tour leg that could include appearances in Canada but dates are not yet set according to his publicist.

Aiken announced in late March that he plans to return to the studio to work on a new Christmas album when his tour concludes. According to Aiken the goal is to release it in 2004. Aiken’s American Idol top 12 outfit from American Idol 2 “Motown Night’ is currently on display at the N.C. Museum of History through Sept. 6 in Raleigh.

Several sources suggest that Aiken will return to a skating venue in 2004, but this time the plan is to include performances by elite skating champions. (Look for further details on the BLADES On Ice website when arrangements are more finalized.)

Aiken earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in special education on Dec. 20 in Charlotte, N.C. from the University of North Carolina Charlotte. After completing an independent study program where he researched how to set up a foundation, he went the extra mile and actually set up this BAF foundation. One of its goals is to give out grants to help facilitate inclusion programs for special needs children.

Aiken did not fall on the ice and succeeded in making “Skate with Clay” special for the children that participated. Aiken recently told the Associated Press, “A lot of people overlook the work that the foundation is trying to do. That’s the benefit of me being in this position, is the opportunity to bring attention to a cause that’s personal to me that doesn’t really have a voice.

A Special Gift From Clay Aiken

Friday, April 24th, 2009

Friday night, April 24th, the Clay Nation experienced something extraordinary.  It will be an afternoon and evening that will be talked about for a long time.

Clay Aiken posted at the Official Fan Club and started a thread called Questions For Clay.  He said for us to go ahead and ask whatever we wanted to.  He explained that if he didn’t want to answer it, he wouldn’t.  He also suggested that no career or performance announcements would be made in the thread so it would waste time to ask questions about that.  He also reminded us that rude or invasive questions would not be tolerated.

The thread was to be questions only with no chatting so it would flow better and be easier to follow.

Between the mods at the OFC and the great fans, the hours flew by with few problems.  A few people had to be reminded not to chat, but most of the participating fans were following the rules and having a great time.

What did we learn in this question thread……Well, we learned that Clay really can’t play the piano, he doesn’t have orange crocs, he did his own hair for the “Night on the Tavern” Awards Dinner, and lots of other cute things.

But the biggest thing we learned was that Clay Aiken is a very special man who loves his fans.  He spent 7 hours on-line today, just to make us feel good and have a fun time.

Thank you Clay!!  I can’t think of any other celebrity who would spend so much time with their fans.  You are one in a million!!

Clay ended the evening with “a Big Bang.”  At 8:41pm (California time), Clay directed us to a new blog.  It seems he had a wonderful gift for us…..a studio recording of the song “Just You.”

Clay explained that it had been one of the first songs he had recorded for “A Thousand Different Ways.  When the label changed the direction of the new album, “Just You” was put on a shelf.

This song is a gift to us, but Clay suggested that it would be wonderful for those who download the song to donate whatever they can to the Bubel/Aiken Foundation. He said:

“Consider this track a “charity recording” …. donate whatever you can or whatever you are willing to… and accept our thanks.”

Hopefully, all of Clay’s fans will donate something………a dollar, five dollars, twenty-five dollars……..whatever you can afford.  This was a wonderful gift given to us by Clay.  I hope TBAF makes loads of money.

We have just been given permission to post Clay’s entire blog.  Enjoy!!  It is wonderful.

What an interesting afternoon! You have kept my attention longer than I thought possible. If only my homework in high school had held my attention as long, huh?

Lots of interesting questions today and lots of energy. One question in particular got me (and Jaymes) to thinking. “Clay, will you ever record … Just You?”

Well folks… truth is.. . I did. Long ago. As a matter of fact It was one of the first songs we recorded for the album A Thousand Different Ways. It was recorded before the label asked me to do the album of cover love songs and before the budget was officially approved, so I actually paid for it myself. Then, as I recall, when the decision was made to do the cover album, the label opened a budget for the album, but it did not include reimbursing me for songs I had recorded that did not fit the concept. So, here I have had this song all along that, to my knowledge, I own the only copy of. What to do with it.. what to do? Well, this evening (with some encouragement from Jaymes) I decided…. let’s just give it to them. Why not? We do have plans (which we will tell you about eventually) to be back in the studio and record in the near future, but until then… you might as well get a bit of something you haven’t been able to hear in a while. “New” music.

Now… here’s the deal. I want to give it to you because you deserve it. You’ve stuck by me and been patient for a long time. But, also, I really have to give it to you. Since I didn’t write it or produce it, I can’t sell it to you… but I hate to encourage getting music for free. You all have always been SOOOO ethical when it has come to downloading music. I know my fans are probably some of the most scrupulous in the country and I believe that you never steal music. That said… We are gonna do this on the “honor system”… Go ahead…. download the song. It’s yours. Share it with your friends. It’s free. But… I want to make it count for someone… so let’s make it count for tens of thousands of children in the US with developmental disabilities If you can’t afford anything for it.. then don’t pay… but… if you can… I encourage you… I ask of you… that you make a donation to the Bubel/Aiken Foundation for how ever much you feel the song is worth. If you want to give $1… great. If you want to give $1000… GREAT… if you can only give $.05 … that’s fine too. It’s a tough time we’re living through nowadays, and non-profits are hurting more than ever as well. BAF (which will soon be known by a different name) has had amazing success in fulfilling it’s mission, and is embarking on a long term plan to continue including kids in every aspect of life. But, it will continue to need help from all of us in order to make that possible.

Consider this track a “charity recording” …. donate whatever you can or whatever you are willing to… and accept our thanks.

The song is for you…JUST YOU… from me.

Clay Aiken – A Voice For Change

Thursday, April 16th, 2009

The Bubel/Aiken Foundation hosted a gala benefit dinner, “Florida Voices for Change” on Saturday, April 16, 2005.  The event, held at the Greater Fort Lauderdale Broward County Convention Center was a huge success and remembered with excitement by all in attendance.

Registration for the event started and 6:30pm and was followed by a silent auction.  The dinner was served at 8 pm.

Two Florida leaders were presented with the first annual “Florida Champions for Change” awards at the gala.  They were Miami-Dade County Commissioner Sally Heyman and State Representative Susan K. Goldstein.  Both ladies were honored for their work for Florida children living with developmental Disabilities.

Clay Aiken did not give a long speech that night.  He spoke without a script and said, “I am winging it.”  He talked about how the Foundation had become a success and how he cannot thank people enough.  He said he was surprised that so many others have taken up the cause and spread it throughout the country.  He was pleases that so many had not just helped the children, but also the families of the children.

In thanking the volunteers for all their efforts, Clay said:  “Don’t clap for me. Clap for yourself.”

Clay’s good friend Quiana Parler joined Clay to entertain the Gala participants.  She started off the program by singing a beautiful song titled “River Deep, Mountain High.”  Her second number, “I will Always Love You,” was performed well and the audience gave Quiana a huge ovation.

One humorous event in the program was when Clay was singing his hit song, “The Way.”  He stopped and said, “Y’all got me really flustered and I can’t remember the words.”  No one seemed to care at all.

The highlight of the evening performance was Clay’s rendition of “Bridge Over Troubled Water.”  Clay was joined by the Michael M. Krop Senior High School choir and the audience stood to express their excitement of the performance.

Today’s Caregiver Magazine presented Clay with the Robert M. Barg Memorial Achievement Award for his dedication to families and others who take care of people with disabilities.

Besides the Gala, the day was very busy for Clay.  He spent part of the day, planting trees with the South Florida Best Buddies organization.  Clay also was the keynote speaker at Today’s Caregiver Magazine’s Fearless Caregiver Conference.   That’s a lot to do in one day.

According to fan reports of the evening, Clay looked handsome in a navy blue suit, white shirt and striped tie.    Most eyes were on his black boots which were very popular with his fans.

The Florida Gala was one of the earlier events in TBAF history.  It was a wonderful evening for the fans and a great fundraiser for the Foundation.

The following is a video by SueReu that shows what the Florida Gala was all about.  Enjoy!!

Clay Aiken – Foundation News

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

Good News from The Bubel/Aiken Foundation (TBAF) today.  The Foundation announced that over $500,000 in grants have been given out to support programs all over the U.S. as a part of the Let’s All Play initiative.

Over one million dollars has been invested over the past two years to expand the Let’s All Play program.  The purpose of the program is “to assist child and youth organizations in moving toward full inclusion.”  The inclusion experience was instituted by the Foundation in 2004.

In 2009, the Foundation will support over 30 recreational programs.  Besides the grant funding, the Foundation will provide a program model and training for the camp.

The Center for Social Development and Education at the University of Massachusetts in Boston was asked by the Foundation to assess the implementation of Let’s All Play in 2008.  The results were exciting.  The evidence showed that “campers with disabilities improved self-esteem, social skills, social relationships with campers without disabilities, general engagement in camp activities, and sport/motor skills.”

According to the Foundation newsletter, over 5,000 children will participate in the inclusive experience this summer.

The Foundation also announced today that The Mitsubishi Electric America Foundation has invested $360,000 in new and continuing grants to TBAF.  Altogether, they have invested $3.2 million in the Foundation’s 5 year Inclusion Initiative.

The newest inclusion project is a joint venture between TBAF and the National Center for Summer Learning at Johns Hopkins University.  This is a three year project that will be a powerful voice for change in summer learning for all children.  The partners will, “expand access to high-quality, inclusive summer learning opportunities for young people by developing a summer learning curriculum to help summer camps fully include youth with disabilities.”

The Bubel/Aiken Foundation also announced the date of the 2009 Champions of Change Gala.  The celebration will be held on October 17, 2009 at the Raleigh Marriott City Center.  More information will be coming soon.

Clay Aiken and Diane Bubel should be so proud of what they have accomplished with TBAF.  Congratulations to the Foundation, their staff and all the volunteers that have helped the Foundation make an impact on children all over the country.

Quote of the Day

It is not always about performance art, but about receiving positive energy from people with positive spirits. Sometimes we can see someone's spirit, and those are the people with great energy. Those are the people that get me through the day, especially on Broadway. -Clay Aiken
