Clay Aiken – Smart and Tasteful

The Timeless Tour made a stop in Windsor, Ontario on August 5th. The concert was held at Caesars Windsor.  This beautiful facility is located on Windsor’s riverfront and overlooks the Detroit skyline.  The Colosseum at Caesars Windsor is a 5,000 seat venue and according to the box office,  the show was almost a sold-out show.

Ted Shaw, from The Windsor Star, was a part of the audience and posted his review only a few hours after the show ended.  Mr. Shaw seemed to like most of the show and called it smart and tasteful.

Ex-Idols entertain with smart, tasteful show

By Ted Shaw, The Windsor Star August 6, 2010 2:02 AM

While neither could be called an American idol, Ruben Studdard and Clay Aiken showed Thursday at Caesars Windsor’s Colosseum how they won the hearts and votes of millions who watched them compete in 2003.

They were rivals back in the second season of American Idol, when Studdard took top spot and Aiken was right behind. Now they’re singing side-by-side on a 17-city North American tour called Timeless.

Taking a cue from 1960s TV variety shows, the two teased and joked with each other in a well-rehearsed revue that covered four decades of popular music.

Pretending to still hold grudges from the American Idol contest, they opened with hit singles they have each had since the show — Studdard’s Flying Without Wings and Aiken’s This is the Night.

There were winks about Aiken’s coming-out about his homosexuality in a People Magazine interview two years ago. The audience lapped it up. It was close to capacity, about 5,000, and surprisingly an older-than-you’d-expect audience.

But that made some of their musical choices smart and tasteful, particularly in the first half of the show.

Aiken was first out of the blocks with a cover of Elvis Presley’s Suspicious Minds, backed by terrific vocalists, Qiana Parler and Casey Thompson. Parler and Aiken go back to the earliest days of American Idol — they were performing together before signing up for the show in 2002.

Studdard was up next with Bring It On Home to Me, then they went into a 15-song medley of the 1960s, each taking leads. Studdard’s In the Midnight Hour was followed by Aiken’s Up On The Roof.

There were snippets of Motown, too, with the backup singers and Aiken slapping tambourines on their sides.

Clay’s Still The One, the Orleans song, was a little out of place during this segment, but he did a bang-up job of it.

The highlight was Studdard’s moving performances of two Marvin Gaye songs — Mercy Mercy Me and What’s Goin’ On. Three medleys from succeeding decades followed, each less interesting than the last. The ’90s medley near the show’s end was, unfortunately, a real downer.

Studdard and Aiken work seamlessly together — both have musical stage acting in their backgrounds, and it pays off during the banter between songs.

This is a concept that could easily be translated to the small screen — maybe it’s time to revive weekly variety television.

Clay Aiken – Headed To Lancaster

By musicfan123 · Comments 9974(3)http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F2010%2F08%2F05%2Fclay-aiken-headed-to-lancaster%2FClay+Aiken+-+Headed+To+Lancaster2010-08-05+21%3A52%3A02musicfan123http%3A%2F%2Fwww.claynewsnetwork.com%2F%3Fp%3D9974
Thursday, August 5th, 2010

Jon Ferguson is a staff writer for the Intelligencer Journal/Lancaster New Era in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.  On August 5th, Mr. Ferguson published a nice article about Clay Aiken and the Timeless Tour.  The American Music Theatre in Lancaster will be hosting the concert on Sunday, August 8th, 2010.

Once ‘Idols,’ now friends

Clay Aiken, Ruben Studdard join forces for tour

Seven years after squaring off against each other on the second season of “American Idol,” Clay Aiken and Ruben Studdard are again sharing the same stage.

The two singers will bring their “Timeless” tour to the American Music Theatre Sunday night.

It’s the first time they’ve toured together and Aiken says they’ll be performing songs from the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. He says they have an 85-song set list to choose from.

“If people name two or three big songs from any one of those decades, chances are we’re doing at least one of them,” Aiken says from his tour bus while it travels through Wisconsin.

Aiken, 31, says he and Studdard, who won the “American Idol” competition that year, share the stage about 85 percent of the time during the show and do a lot of singing together.

“Occasionally, we’ll take a break and let the other person sing a solo song so the other person can rest or wipe the sweat off his face,” Aiken says.

The North Carolina native says he hasn’t watched “American Idol” for the past five years, though he and Studdard remain friends and have always stayed in touch.

“Ruben and I have talked for several years actually about wanting to do something together,” he says. “We hadn’t performed together or sung together since we were on ‘Idol.’ It was something that we talked about wanting to do and kept putting it off because of his obligations, my obligations or just pure laziness. Finally, we decided to stop talking about it and just do it.”

Though Studdard topped Aiken on “American Idol,” Aiken has enjoyed more commercial success during their post–”Idol” careers.

Buoyed by enthusiastic fans called Claymates, Aiken’s debut album, “Measure of a Man” (2003), went on to sell almost three millions copies.

He released a Christmas album the following year that sold over a million copies.

However, he hasn’t been able to sustain those numbers and his 2008 album, “On My Way Here,” sold about 150,000 copies.

His latest album, “Tried and True,” was released in June and features popular songs like “Crying,” “Moon River,” “Misty,” “Unchained Melody” (which he sang on “Idol”) and “Suspicious Minds.”

“These are songs that are so wonderfully written — great standards, almost — that it was easy for me to settle in with them,” he says. “I’ve heard them my whole life.”

Except for “Suspicious Minds,” Aiken says he won’t be singing songs from the album during his tour with Studdard. He says they agreed not to use the tour as an opportunity to promote their solo albums. (Studdard’s fourth album, “Love Is,” produced by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, was released in May 2009.)

Aiken says he will tour behind the album in the winter.

During his career, Aiken had been dogged by questions about his sexuality. Rumors persisted that he was gay, though Aiken for years denied it.

In 2008, Aiken disclosed in an interview with People magazine that he is gay.

“I think it’s probably been relatively neutral,” Aiken says when asked how the disclosure has affected his career. “Obviously, there were some people who weren’t thrilled with it. But, at the same time, it allows me to be more comfortable with myself and be more open. It makes it easier to perform and I think people see that and gravitate toward it.”

Juggling…verb:  to manage or alternate the requirements of (two or more tasks, responsibilities, activities, etc.) so as to handle each adequately:  juggling the obligations of job and school.

Clay Aiken seems to to be skilled in the act of juggling. He has so many tasks at this time it is amazing that he can keep them all under control.

One of the tasks is the DVD – Tried and True: Live.  The DVD was recently released and great news was published by the Associated Press.  According to Soundscan, the DVD is a hit.

Another part of the juggling act is Clay’s new song for Disney.  Called I Believe We Can, the song is part of an episode of Phineas and Ferb.  Titled Summer Belongs To You, the entire project is getting a great deal of publicity from Disney and news about the show and song has been on most of the mainstream entertainment site.  The entire soundtrack for the show was made available this week at I-Tunes.  Have you purchased it yet?  For more information,  visit Wikia Entertainment

As most of you know, Clay is in the middle of a 17 city tour.  The Timeless Tour with Ruben Studdard is a huge success and is being heavily promoted at most venues.  The tour will visit the MGM Grand – Foxwoods on August 7th.  Susan Podhajski, a correspondent for ctpost.com, wrote an article about the concert and included a nice interview of Ruben.

They sang their hearts out and tried to out-perform one another while winning the hearts of millions seven years ago on TV’s “American Idol.”

Now, “American Idol” winner Ruben Studdard  and Clay Aiken are sharing a stage once again — the two will perform their “The Timeless Tour” Saturday at the MGM Grand at Foxwoods Resort and Casino.

The PBS special,The Clay Aiken: Tried & True ~ LIVE! started being shown throughout the USA this week.  In most cases, telecast of the program is being used as a part of the fall pledge drives for the individual stations.  If you want to support the station, the stations have different gifts that are given to supporters who donate.  Most of the stations offer a copy of Tried & True CD and the DVD.  Clay was able to visit many of the PBS stations to tape pledge breaks that are run during the telecast.  It’s always fun to see and hear Clay chat about his work.

A selected number of stations will have tickets to the new Tried & True:LIVE tour that is scheduled for February and March.  Two of the areas that are including tickets are East Tennessee and Miami.  They posted some information this week that is fun to read.

In this busy time of celebrating Everything – Clay Aiken, we would like to take a moment to celebrate a small achievement here at CANN.  Some time in the middle of Sunday night, we reached 200,000 hits on our site.

Little did we imagine when the site started about a year and a half ago that we would reach this exciting milestone.

This will be the 825th post on this blog. We have covered many topics from news of Broadway, the music industry and even some short bios of some of the people who have supported Clay in his musical career.  Of course, the news about Clay Aiken is always our top priority.

We have had visitors from Brazil to Saudi Arabia, Japan to Ghana, and Pakistan to the United Kingdom. Each visitor is an important part of our family and the ClayNation.  I hope that some of our visitors from all over the world will stop by and say hello.  We all want to know each other better and share the excitement of  Everything – Clay Aiken.  Just click on the comment number under the blog and say a quick hello!  Also, be sure to check out the small map at the bottom right of the page.  Give it a click and you will see that we are a world-wide site.  It is fun to see so many hits from all over the world.

We are sending a huge Thank You to all of you for your support and encouragement.  Please let us know if you have some ideas to help the site and it’s always nice to hear when you enjoy something too.

Now for some REAL CLAY AIKEN NEWS!!

Ben Wener from the Orange County Register wrote an interesting review of the concert in Los Angeles Sunday night.

Mr. Werner really enjoyed himself at the concert and it is so nice to read a review from someone who actually was there and didn’t mail the review in before the show.  The article is long, but a few nice comments are:

  • An only slightly old-fashioned Southern gentleman with natural comic timing, Aiken has further bolstered his reputation via memorably funny television appearances, especially as a frequent guest on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Methinks he envies the host: quick-witted but ever-sweet Aiken would be perfect for a revamp mash-up of The Mike Douglas Show and The Ellen DeGeneres Show……
  • Each vocalist shined on his own: in addition to nailing the sky-high notes on Orleans’ “Still the One” and (in the Seventies Medley) Boston’s “More Than a Feeling,” Aiken capably handled Elvis’ “Suspicious Minds” and Manilow’s “Mandy,” while Studdard expertly summoned the grit of Otis Redding (for “Bring It on Home to Me”) and the effortless glide of Marvin Gaye (on a silken segue from “Mercy Mercy Me” into “What’s Going On”) before impressing as usual with his nuanced, Luther Vandross-informed reading of Leon Russell’s “Superstar.”
  • Aiken and Studdard steamrolled gleefully through material both expectedly glossy and uncharacteristic. The Motown gems suited the latter as much as the power ballads of Chicago and REO Speedwagon were tailored for the former, but what I can’t shake is the sight of Aiken kicking off Sir Mix-a-Lot’s “Baby Got Back” or both of them kicking up their heels for Bell Biv DeVoe’s “Poison” and New Kids on the Block’s “The Right Stuff.”
  • It’s such a schmaltzy conception that I often found myself wanting these two to give me a reason to loathe their performance — except that I kept enjoying myself. Loosely silly as their show is, it’s also unabashedly joyful, and above all smoothly executed … a simple entertainment that could have legs if given half a chance and a bigger budget … a kinda-corny, kinda-cute variety show …

You can read the entire review by visiting the website….OCRegister Don’t forget to leave a message to let the writer and paper know Clay and Ruben have fans that support them and support people who write legitimate reviews.

It seems that if you are a fan of Clay Aiken, the amount of news creates either a feast or a famine.  It is wonderful to be in the middle of a HUGE feast.

The Timeless Tour has now had seven stops.  Each concert has been met with excitement and great reviews.  It is always wonderful when each concert seems to have an “it” moment that is different from the others.  Who will ever forget the black hammer pants and gold chain and belt from Reno.  I am looking forward to hearing the “moment” from  Los Angeles.

In the meantime, enjoy the ” it” moment from Reno which was in the 90′s Medley.  The next Youtube is a great video of the 60′s medley.

MyNC.com is a local news and information website that covers more than 20 communities across the Triangle area (Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill) of North Carolina.    On July 30th, they posted a story about the National Inclusion Project’s Annual Champions Gala.  The article is a great way to let the Raleigh community know all about the wonderful program.  Have you gotten your ticket to the Gala yet?

The National Inclusion Project, co-founded by Clay Aiken and Diane Bubel, opens doors for all kids to be included together and experience all that life has to offer. The Project conducts programs with community partners to teach others how to be inclusive so that kids with and without disabilities can experience lifelong benefits. Mustard is not your ordinary shade of yellow! Mustard has an earthiness that is like no other shade. It is similar to the color Flax.

This color was popular during the mid-1970s and is regaining popularity!!

This summer, thanks to Clay Aiken, the color has become….HAWT!!

Quote of the Day

It is not always about performance art, but about receiving positive energy from people with positive spirits. Sometimes we can see someone's spirit, and those are the people with great energy. Those are the people that get me through the day, especially on Broadway. -Clay Aiken
