American Idol…love it or hate it, it has become a huge phenomenon in the entertainment field.  Although the viewer count has been dropping the last few years, the show still is able to rope in many people to watch “the good, the bad, and the ugly.”

Tonight, American Idol, Season 10, will feature the songs of Elton John.  The Top 11 contestants will try to win a place on next week’s show by singing their hearts out, Elton John style.  Because of last week’s save, two contestants will be eliminated this week.

Clay Aiken became known for his American Idol rendition of  Don’t Let The Sun Go Down on Me.  After all, he sang it four times on the televised part of American Idol.

We first heard Clay sing Don’t Let The Sun Go Down on Me (DLTSGDOM) on the Wildcard show in March of 2003.   Clay seemed to have effortless power and he gave the impression that he had been doing this for a long time.  From the beginning, he started working the camera and because he was really into the song, his face was very expressive.

It was fun to see the judges excited about Clay’s performance.  Paula gushed and Clay blushed!!  Randy and Paula gave him a standing ovation and even Simon was impressed.

As we all know, the next night, Clay was voted America’s Choice and after composing himself with a deep breath, Clay preceded to sing the song beautifully.

The American public got it right.  They gave Clay the opportunity to shine and he became the star we all love.

On May 19th, American Idol had a special final 2 show.  The evening was filled with clips, interviews and live performances.   Clay, once again, performed Don’t Let the Sun Go Down On Me.

Probably the most memorable performance of DLTSGDOM was a few years later.   May 24, 2006 was the Season 5 Finale.  American Idol went all out to produce a show that was buzz-worthy.  They enlisted the top singers to make an appearance on the show and thought that including Prince in the show would cause much excitement.  Ah…little did they know that the buzz of the night was all about Clay Aiken.

AI did a Golden Idol Award skit. The category was Favorite Impersonation. Michael Sandecki, who impersonated Clay, won the competition and Ryan asked him to sing. As Michael started singing, the doors behind him opened and Clay walked through. Michael was totally awestruck by Clay. Clay surprised everyone with his new look and he didn’t look like Michael in any way!!

One of the best parts was the many comments from the press about Clay’s performance.  The following are a few of the great press:

Yahoo Buzz: Season 2 runner-up Clay Aiken made a victorious return to the “Idol” stage, sporting a new look that helped him pull in more buzz than last year’s champ Carrie Underwood. And a surprise appearance by Prince stirred up searches on the funk legend—precisely the point. Gotta love the “Idol” publicity machine.

Access Hollywood: The moment everyone is talking about around here is the reemergence of Clay Aiken. Folks here have dubbed his new look a cross between KD Lang and the Beatles. Inside the theater, he sounded amazing but I don’t think he wasn’t expecting shocked auditioner, Michael, to start trying to duet with him on the song At one point off-camera the stage manager came out and told Ryan to sit him down. That’s why the chair was brought out and you see Ryan place him there.

Baltimore MIX 106.5: So who won Idol? Katherine, Taylor? No, it was Clay Aiken’s haircut.

DC MIX 107.3: Man, did you see that Clay Aiken song in the show last night? What a great voice, and what a great guy he is to go along with the joke.

Inside Edition: Clay Aiken told us today he really enjoyed being on the AI finale and he is really thrilled for Michael Sandecki

It’s a night to remember and a wonderful moment for Clay who allowed his Impersonator to perform, yet showed everyone that he was not even close in looks, voice or star power.

Tonight, some of Clay’s fans have decided to celebrate Clay Aiken and his fabulous voice.  Many of his fans no longer watch American Idol so they are going to share remembrances and videos of Clay’s Elton John songs.  And, they will be posting the fun on Twitter too.  If you are around, why not join the fun.  The more the merrier!!

The following videos are three of Clay’s performances of Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me! Enjoy!!

Clay Aiken – Solitaire’s The Only Game In Town!

Solitaire’s the only game in town

And Every road that takes him, takes him down

And by himself, it’s easy to pretend

He’ll never love again

There are times in a person’s career that become obvious benchmark events.  Some of these events are built up to be career changing, but some just happen.  Most people believe that March 17, 2004 was a defining moment in the career of Clay Aiken.

Season 3 of American Idol was in full swing.  The final group of 12 contestants had performed on the first elimination show one night before.  Each singer had tried to impress America by singing a song for “Soul Night.”

But March 17th was Results Night and American Idol had invited Clay Aiken, the runner up of Season 2, as their special musical guest.

According to reports at the time, there were many fans that arrived very early in the morning for the 5pm taping.  A reporter from KIIS FM came by the line at about 9am to do a man-on-the-street interview with the line-sitters.  Someone had called Rick Dees for an on-air contest and they were intrigued that there were so many people lined up so early.  They wanted to know what AI3 finalist the people were there to see.  They were completely shocked to learn that most of the fans were there for Clay.

At about the halfway mark of the show, Ryan Seacrest announced Clay.  He strode onto the stage in a commanding way.  He was wearing a black turtleneck and a suit.  Instead of standing in front of the judges table, Clay chose to perform at the side of the stage.  Clay chose to sing Solitaire as it was being pushed as his new single.

The audience in the studio and watching at home were treated to a wonderful performance.  Not only did Clay sing well, he was able to connect with the audience with his eye contact and emotional lyrics.  And I doubt anyone will forget the surreal “glory note.”

It was reported that Debra Byrd was monitoring the show on a TV screen at the front of the audience.  As Clay was singing, she smiled widely and seemed very proud.  Fred Bronson and Julia DeMato were both a part of the audience that night.

All three of the regular judges were there.  One fan reported: “During Clay’s song, all three judges seemed to not be paying any attention whatsoever.  They were talking among themselves.  There was not one minute of interaction between Clay and those judges the entire time Clay was on the stage – not before, during, or after the song.”

After his performance, Clay chatted a bit with Ryan Seacrest.  Clay said he got a little nervous being in the studio again.  He also said that the tour with Kelly Clarkson was going well.  Ryan made sure that the audience knew that Clay’s album had gone triple platinum.

The contestants had a chance to ask Clay some questions.  The audience laughed when Matt said he was having nightmares about Simon and wanted to know how Clay dealt with that.  His response was to focus on the goal and to not let anything get in the way.  He also commented that fame is hard when Fantasia asked him if people treated him differently.

At the commercial break, Clay went over to where the contestants were sitting and shook hands and hugged every one of them.  Someone from the audience threw up some panties and also a bear for him.  It was reported that Clay calmly picked up the panties and casually threw them over to Simon.

“My impression of the whole experience was that Clay is the real superstar here – he is just so far beyond American Idol,” reported a fan that was a part of the live audience that night.

It was certainly a night to remember and the entire audience was on their feet and applauding loudly for Clay Aiken, the new pop star.

The talented SueReu published a new video of Clay singing Solitaire.  She combined footage of Clay’s show stopping performance on American Idol and footage from the February 10th, 2011 Tried and True Tour.  In Florida, Clay sang Solitaire and again, the performance was breathtaking.  It is interesting to note that Clay sang the difficult song in the same key and his voice soared just as it did in 2004.  In fact, for many listeners, the only difference was the more mature sense of passion that Clay sang in Miami.

Thank you to SueReu for this amazing video and, of course, a huge thank-you to Clay Aiken for continuing to present quality performances to his audiences…It just keeps getting better!

The ballad, “Solitaire“, was written by Neil Sedaka in 1971.   Neil took the melancholy lyrics of Phil Cody and wrote one of the most beautiful pop songs ever recorded.  The lyrics employ playing the card game of solitaire as a metaphor for a man “who lost his love through his indifference” – “while life goes on around him everywhere he’s playing solitaire”.

Clay Aiken – The Unlikely Pop Star

It all started in Atlanta, Georgia on January 28th, 2003, when millions of people were introduced to a skinny redhead who wore glasses and had a unique fashion style. The American Idol judges looked skeptical and no one knew what to expect.

But like your mother used to say, don’t judge a book by its cover. Clay Aiken opened his mouth to sing and the incredible voice that poured out amazed everyone.

“Why are you here?” Clay spread his hands and stated simply; “Because I am the next American Idol.”

The skeptical judges watched and listened as Clay sang an excerpt from the 80’s song, Always and Forever and demonstrated his rich, clear voice.

Randy Jackson wanted to know where the voice came from and Simon Cowell suggested that he didn’t look like a pop star. But, it’s all about the voice and so Clay, the unlikely pop star, made his first steps on an incredible journey.

The voice continued to amaze through the following weeks. Clayton Aiken became Clay Aiken. He not only looked like a pop star, he became one.

Please watch this incredible audition video!

Clay Aiken – Theatre Experience A Reality!

By musicfan123 · Comments 10072(4)http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F2010%2F11%2F01%2Fclay-aiken-theatre-experience-a-reality%2FClay+Aiken+-+Theatre+Experience+A+Reality%212010-11-01+08%3A30%3A06musicfan123http%3A%2F%2Fwww.claynewsnetwork.com%2F%3Fp%3D10072

Have you ever heard of the Theatre Development Fund?  If you are a Clay Aiken fan or someone who has had the opportunity to attend a show on Broadway, you probably know more about the organization than you think you do.  The most visual project that they have is running the TKTS Discount Booths.  These booths offer tickets to Broadway and Off-Broadway musicals and plays at up to 50% off.

The Theatre Development Fund is the largest not-for-profit service organization for the performing arts in the United States.  It was established in 1968 to foster works of artistic merit by supporting new productions and to broaden the audience for live theatre and dance. For over 40 years, TDF has played a unique role in strengthening the performing arts in New York City. TDF’s programs have:

  • Filled 72 million theatre seats
  • Provided subsidy support to over 900 plays, including 30 Pulitzer Prize honorees
  • Returned over 1.6 billion dollars in revenue to thousands of productions

On October 16, 2008, after Clay Aiken finished his run on Broadway, TDF opened their new TKTS Discount Booth in Duffy Square.  The booth is the centerpiece of the newly designed and expanded plaza and operates under a glowing red glass staircase. They also operate satellite TKTS booths in Downtown Brooklyn and at South Street Seaport.

According to Broadwayworld.com:

TDF’s membership and voucher programs touch the lives of tens of thousands of New Yorkers who might not otherwise be able to afford the unique experience of theatre. TDF’s award-winning education programs, Open Doors, Stage Doors and Residency Arts Project (RAP), involve thousands of New York City public school students each year, most of which have never attended a live theatre performance. TDF’s also produces the theatre magazine, Play by Play, which is written by and for high school students. (www.playbyplayonline.org)

For Clay Aiken and his fans, the TDF’s Accessibility Programs (TAP) is an interesting and important part of their mission.  They make the theatre experience a reality for people with physical disabilities. They also present highly regarded open captioned and sign language interpreted performances for theatre patrons with mild to severe hearing loss, and audio described performances for those who are blind or with low vision.

TDF also sponsors comprehensive training courses for future producers and maintains a 70,000-item Costume Collection which rents professional costumes at low cost to hundreds of not-for-profit organizations across the United States each year. For more information about TDF and its programs, go to www.tdf.org

On October 31, 2008, the Theatre Development Fund published an interview with Clay Aiken.  The article was well-written and very positive regarding Clay’s performance in Spamalot.  You can read it below!

Clay Time: How “American Idol” Clay Aiken became a Broadway knight.

“Simon Cowell can kiss my butt if he wants to use that ‘Broadway’ insult again,” quips Clay Aiken, the former American Idol star now enjoying a stint as Sir Robin on the Great White Way in Monty Python’s Spamalot (now in its final months at the Shubert Theatre). “So often the judges on Idol will use ‘Broadway’ as an insult for a singer’s performance. But I think there’s more talent onstage here at the Shubert Theatre than in all of the music industry.”

Aiken’s casting, along with that of Idol contender Fantasia as a replacement Celie in The Color Purple, has raised a few eyebrows. Were these reality TV creations really qualified to strut their stuff on the Main Stem?

“I think one reason people who’ve been on Idol are showin’ up on Broadway is that they’re people who can do something live,” Aiken notes, making a clear contrast with both film and TV actors and studio-produced pop singers, all of whom get multiple takes to get it right. “The talent for singing live—that’s what you need here.”

Of course, there’s more to a Broadway role, even in a silly romp like Spamalot, than a good singing voice. There’s also the acting and the dancing. Aiken credits author Eric Idle and director Mike Nichols with steering him well in the first department.

“Eric Idle was very complimentary, which always helps when you have no idea what you’re doing,” Aiken says. “Mike Nichols, in addition to being the premeir director of our lifetime, is very easy to work with. I like to think I take direction well, but I can imagine that sometimes a director might have a really hard job in explaining a part, and what’s required. Mike comes up with the most colorful and hilarious ways to explain what he’s looking for.”

Nichols also stressed something you might not expect in such a go-for-broke comedy.

“Overall, I probably have a tendency to overdo certain things,” Aiken admits. “Mike is big on subtlety and kept reminding us, ‘You aren’t funny—the script is funny.’ It’s all very silly, but what makes it funny is that none of the characters realize how stupid they really are, so it actually gets more laughs when the lines are played a little more straight.”

As for the dancing, Aiken says simply: “Someone giving me choreography, that’s just a catastrophe waiting to happen.”

This North Carolina native, who still has a slight twang, is nothing if not forthright. “I had absolutely no exposure to this material before,” Aiken admits. “I literally thought Monty Python was a person. And the first time I saw the show, actually, I thought it was stupid. At the end, I thought, ‘Really? It’s so silly.’ “

This impression was largely the result of what Aiken calls his “limited exposure to Broadway—show likes Wicked, you know, with soaring melodies and big plotlines. I looked as hard as I could at Spamalot and couldn’t find the plot.” He’s glad he gave it another chance.

“When I saw it again, I realized, there’s still not much of a plot here—but it’s the funniest thing in the world. It’s very sarcastic and intelligent humor, and I’m an intelligent person, I like to think.”

When he met Eric Idle, he recognized him not from his Python days but from the broad 1990 comedy Nuns on the Run. “I remember that film because it was the first time I ever saw naked boobs on-screen.” (Not Idle’s, we’re presuming.) “And I’d seen John Cleese on Will and Grace.”

Then Aiken dropped a whopper.

“I still haven’t seen the movie,” he says, meaning the 1975 classic, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, on which Spamalot is based. “I’ve been avoiding it like the plague. I mean, I play Eric Idle’s part, and I’m sure I would just copy everything he did.”

As you may have noticed, a big part of Aiken’s disarming, country-boy charm comes out in his light but persistent self-deprecation. Asked if he ever breaks character to laugh at his colleagues’ onstage antics—i.e., if he ever “loses it,” he responds, “I lose it regularly—lose my place in the script, lose my place in the dancing.”

But yes, he has broken up onstage, as well: “Rick Holmes, who plays Lancelot, is one of the funniest people in the world,” Aiken avers. “And regularly while I’m ‘dead’ onstage, Rick will say something that’s not in the script, and we just can’t stop laughing. You know, in this show it’s OK, because the audience can see that the people onstage are having just as much fun as they are, and the people up there—minus me—are so good at what they do.”

Critics have been kinder than that, noting how well Aiken fits into the show. A future on Broadway could be in the cards for this Clay Idol.

Clay Aiken – Popeater Article

Ashley Iasimone wrote a wonderful article about The Day In The Life of Clay Aiken.  Published at PopEater, the article is a great blend of the business of the day and a look at Clay and his personality.  There is also a wonderful album of over 60 pictures with the article.  They are amazing.

Be sure and visit Popeater and let them know how much we appreciate the coverage of Clay Aiken and his busy schedule.  You can visit them at POPEATER

It’s the morning after Clay Aiken released his new album, ‘Tried and True.’ Backstage at ‘The View,’ the singer sits on a plush green sofa in his dressing room, surrounded by others but in his own world, eyes glues to his iPad as he waits for his call to set. Aiken starts his day out in a solitary mode, but perks up when he and his crew mull over which cover he should choose for an upcoming DVD release. Across the hall are the dressing rooms of Belinda Carlisle, who is also appearing on today’s show, and guest host and ‘Sex and the City‘ actor Mario Cantone, both of whom Aiken chats with before going on camera.

“I did not celebrate for the album at all,” Aiken admits to PopEater, stifling a yawn. “I’ve been working pretty hard. Typically, when an album comes out, you spend most of your day doing press and interviews and whatnot.”

This is one of those days. Starting out in midtown New York City in the early hours of the day at ‘The View’ (with the PopEater crew in tow, as well as a busy itinerary that runs until roughly 5PM and includes stops at ABC, CNN and ‘Talk Stoop‘ in hand), it’s clear to see that he’s the type of guy who needs a little breather between charming talk show hosts, reporters and fans with his smooth vocal performances and dry sense of humor. Although the fresh-faced Aiken says that he usually doesn’t have a problem with mornings, the week has been so busy that he’s been feeling slightly sleep deprived.

“The most difficult part of the day when you’re doing this press thing is having to get up so early and getting started to early. Interestingly enough, someone just said to me yesterday, ‘Oh, you just have to sing and talk,’ but it’s tiring! You wouldn’t think it would be so tiring, but my brain has to work for these things, and that’ll wear you out,” he says with a laugh.

Still, Aiken, who has been relatively out of the spotlight this year, is proud to be talking about ‘Tried and True,’ no matter how exhausting it might get. The album is a departure from his previous releases in more ways than one — not only did Aiken record a collection of standards like ‘Unchained Melody,’ ‘Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You’ and ‘It’s Only Make Believe’ rather than modern pop songs, he actually called all the shots. “I got to be a part of the process from beginning to end, from ‘What type of album do you want to do?’ to ‘OK, let’s do that,’” Aiken says. “‘What songs do you want to do? OK, let’s do that. What type of producer do you want?’ I got to be very hands-on with every part of it, which was different. In addition to it being kind of sonically different to what I’ve done, it was different to be a part of that. It gives you more ownership, and it just really makes it more my baby.”

“This is where the fun starts, ladies,” Aiken, bringing his iPad back out to take his chances at a frustrating round of Solitaire, tells us as we board a waiting car that will transport us to our next stop, ABC. Once he starts his game, he’s in it to win it. “This is not looking good. And if I lose, I get real cranky,” he jokes, his gaze still locked on the game. “I give up at three minutes. There’s no point. That two of hearts is underneath there, and I can’t move him without a red queen, and I’m not gonna get one.”

Seven years ago, Aiken briefly left his hometown of Raleigh, N.C. to get his start on what propelled his oncoming fame as a pop singer — the second season of ‘American Idol.’ After coming in a close second to contestant Ruben Studdard, he went on to launch his recording career. As a performer, Aiken undoubtedly enjoyed his time on the show, but he has not watched it for at least five years now, and, while he understands why he’s still asked about it, he doesn’t have much to say about its current state. Aiken explains that the idea of watching it now makes him a bit nervous and adds, “People change and grow. Once you know how the sausage is made, you don’t want to eat it anymore. It’s a part of who I am, obviously, but it’s not a part of my weekly routine.”

As the van pulls over in front of ABC’s headquarters, Aiken looks forward to finding himself a grilled cheese sandwich from the cafeteria for lunch, preferably made with cheddar, American and/or provolone — “Those are the only three I like,” he says. We check in at the security desk, head up the escalator and hang out in a news conference room while he once again waits to go on camera. Aiken munches on his grilled cheese, slips out of the room for his interview, returns and watches his recent appearance on the ‘The Joy Behar Show,’ shaking his head at the fact that CNN.com is running an item about how he called Simon Cowell an “a–hole” — a lovable one, that is, all in good fun.

Today, he’s returning to CNN for another interview, which he’s psyched about. “CNN is on all the time in my house and I’m upset I can’t get CNN International. I’m very bothered by that,” Aiken laments. This is not a disingenuous endorsement — Aiken gladly calls himself “that big a nerd,” and his hobbies are pretty telling of his personality: “That’s pretty much what I do when I’m alone. I watch CNN. I don’t like crowds. I’m kind of a homebody. I’m a little bit of a hermit. I don’t really go out and do too much at all. I’m relatively boring in my free time, and I’m fine with that.”

In fact, after the CNN reporter jokingly offers him a job and we leave the network to head to Cat Greenleaf’s ‘Talk Stoop’ in Brooklyn for one last interview, Aiken pokes fun at his own “boring” nature and then remains quiet, save a business call or two. He’s in one of the most fast-paced cities in the world but his initial excitement for New York City has waned. “When I lived here for ‘Spamalot,’ I kind of got my fill of New York City,” he says. “I mean, I love coming here. I actually like it quite a bit. But it’s not like I’m gonna go see the sites or anything. What is there to do? Clubs, I guess? No thanks.”

It was around the time of his run in ‘Spamalot’ two years ago that Aiken came out to the media, the “Yes, I’m Gay” headline emblazoned on the cover of People magazine. “When anybody comes out, there are going to be people who are supportive and people who are not,” Aiken says, referring to fans – including those who he thinks still refer to themselves as the devoted “Claymates” — and the general public. “Obviously, I was doing ‘Spamalot’ at the time and I was kind of nervous. I specifically remember that night, thinking, ‘OK, I’m going to walk out prepared to be booed,’ and nobody did. And people were very supportive. People have been very supportive throughout the whole process and it didn’t really change.”

With ‘Tried and True,’ Aiken goes back to what he knows best: home and the music that he heard his mother play while he was growing up. He cites his mom, who often sang in the car as well as at clubs and weddings with a local band, as one of his biggest influences. In particular, she always had a dream that Aiken would record ‘Unchained Melody,’ head out to Nashville with it and have a big hit. Now, Aiken is raising his own son, Parker.

“For the most part, around the house, we don’t have that much music playing,” Aiken says. “For some reason, I’m nervous to sing for him. My son doesn’t like to listen to me sing, but he enjoys listening to other people sing. Maybe kids just don’t like to hear their parents, ever. When they’re teenagers they don’t want to hear them. When they’re babies they don’t want to hear ‘em sing. Maybe it’s just a genetic thing.”

So maybe his kid doesn’t have the musical bug yet — he is only two years old, after all — but what if he one day wants to follow in his dad’s footsteps? Aiken, simply a father looking out for his son, is quick to quip, “I don’t plan on that happening. I obviously will encourage him in whatever he wants to, whatever he’s passionate about, but I’m just gonna hope it’s not this.”

When we arrive at the Cobble Hill brownstone where Aiken will be interviewed for ‘Talk Stoop’ with Cat Greenleaf, he changes into a plaid shirt, accessorized with suspenders — “I’m sitting on the stoop, why not?” he rationalizes — and puts on a smile for Greenleaf’s crew and family. His final press appearance of the day is relaxed, the sun is shining and Aiken treats Greenleaf to a brief a cappella performance.

Aiken’s live performance will soon be taken to the road this summer when he embarks on his co-headlining tour with old ‘Idol’ friend Ruben Studdard, which kicks off on July 23 in Asheville, N.C. In a way, as of late, things really have come full circle for Aiken. “We’re two very, very, very, very different people and we’re kind of brought together by music, which I think is kind of nice and somewhat poetic,” Aiken says. “We are gonna be able to do this on the road together and kind of share what we both love.”

Be sure and watch the video  at AOL or Popeater.  This is a great bit of publicity for Clay and it would be nice to show our support.

Good Morning America

If you watched Good Morning America on Tuesday morning, you had the opportunity to see Clay Aiken.   Clay fans were excited about hearing Clay sing and chat about the album.

There were many Clay fans in the audience and some of them had their cameras filming some of the activities that happened in the background.  One of the captivating videos shows Clay making friends with some of the exotic animals that were visiting the set.   Thank you to the fans for sharing this on YouTube.

It looks like the Aiken household needs more pets at their home!

Joy Behar Show

Did you watch Clay on the Joy Behar show on Tuesday evening?  Although there was not enough time, Clay and Joy had a great conversation and covered many subjects.  I particularly enjoyed Clays description of Simon Cowell.

If you enjoyed seeing Joy and Clay chat, why not leave a message for her.  Perhaps Joy will ask Clay to be a panel  member for one segment.  I would love to hear Clay talk about some of the news of the day.  You can comment HERE

The following are some great screen caps  from Tuesday nights show.

Tried & True Review – Herald Dispatch

Angela Henderson write a blog titled Idol Chit-Chat for the Herald Dispatch.  On June 1st, she wrote a wonderful review of the album.  Please make sure you visit the site and let Ms. Henderson know how much you appreciate her exciting review.

Clay Aiken CD Review: “Tried and True” and Perfectly Suited

I’ve kind of gained a reputation among some of my friends as the go-to-person when it comes to putting together music for certain events. I painstakingly try and match the music perfectly to the occasion and the audience in attendance.

But when the event calls for light and jazzy, I admit I struggle. It’s hard to find the right combination of subtle, yet not depressing or annoying.

Well now I’m happy to report that dilemma has been solved forever. Because the next time someone makes that request for their event, I will simply present them with a copy of Clay Aiken’s latest, “Tried and True.” It really is the perfect mix for that jazzy evening with a good combination of slow and fast songs.

I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t disappointed that Clay decided to do a CD of classics instead of a new pop CD. But when he’s this perfectly suited for these songs, it’s hard to argue. Clearly Clay understands his audience and they’re going to love this one. The CD has a big band sound throughout that suits Clay’s voice perfectly. And that voice is in fine form as Clay tackles “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You,” “What Kind of Fool Am I?” (featuring David Sanborn), “It’s Only Make Believe,” “Misty,” “Mack the Knife,” “It’s Impossible,” “Unchained Melody,” “There’s a Kind of Hush” and “Moon River” (featuring Vince Gill). He also turns the Roy Orbison classic, “Crying,” into a gorgeous duet with Broadway star Linda Eder. Plus he takes on my dad’s favorite Elvis song, “Suspicious Minds.” And in case, you’re wondering, yes, I am already trying to turn it into my dad’s ringtone.

The deluxe edition of the CD includes “Who’s Sorry Now” and “Breaking Up Is Hard to Do” plus a DVD with a live performance of “Build Me Up Buttercup” and other clips from Clay’s PBS special, which is scheduled to premiere later this month.

Now in the interest of full disclosure, I should probably confess that I would listen to Clay sing the phone book. So I’m probably not the most objective person when it comes to reviewing this CD. But I have to believe that even a non-Claymate would find something to like about this one.

“Tried and True” is now available in stores and online…

Clay Aiken – Digital Music Report

By musicfan123 · Comments 7972(14)http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F2010%2F01%2F28%2Fclay-aiken-digital-music-report%2FClay+Aiken+-+Digital+Music+Report2010-01-28+07%3A07%3A21musicfan123http%3A%2F%2Fwww.claynewsnetwork.com%2F%3Fp%3D7972
Thursday, January 28th, 2010

As we anticipate the release of the new CD by Clay Aiken, it is important that we stay informed about what is going on in the music recording industry.  The following information is important and “hot off the press.”

The IFPI (or International Federation of the Phonographic Industry) represents 1400 record companies in 72 countries.  It just published their Digital Music Report for 2010, which looks at international trends in the recording industry over the past year.

The IFPI said that the industry had seen positive developments in 2009, with more than a quarter of all recorded music revenues now coming from digital sales after the industry embraced new ways to sell tracks.  Fans today can access and pay for music in different ways.  They can buy tracks or albums from download stores, use subscription services, use music services that are bundled with devices, buy apps for music and listen to music through streaming services for free.

Record labels are making music available in many unprecedented ways.  Today, albums come in hundreds of formats and products.  A popular example is Beyonce’s album, “I Am…Sasha Fierce.”  The album is available in more than 260 different products in the United States.  These include music videos, master tones, ringback tones and audio tracks.

Lucian Grainge is the Chairman and CEO, Universal Music Group International.  He was quoted in the report as saying;

“We are shaping our own future by finding new ways of getting music into people’s lives.”

The annual report is 30 pages long and touches on many positive and negative things in the recording industry.

In their report, the IFPI reported that 95% of all music downloads are illegal – and they say that “cooperation from Internet Service Providers holds the key to this problem.”

Piracy is the major barrier to growth of the legitimate digital music sector and is causing severe damage to local music industries around the world.  The IFPI goes on to say that the industry has reached a tipping point with digital music, and suggests that the government needs to look to ISPs to police file sharing.  Their plan is to have ISPs use a “graduated response”, warning suspected pirates first, and then disconnecting them from the Internet.

IFPI chairman and CEO John Kennedy said;

“Digital piracy remains a huge barrier to market growth and is causing a steady erosion of investment in local music. The collapse in sales and investment in France, Spain and Brazil, countries with traditionally vibrant music cultures, testify to this and are a warning to the rest of the world.”

Another interesting topic that they reported on was the highly damaging problem of pre-release piracy.  Unfortunately, sometimes pre-release tracks and albums leak days or weeks before their official release.  Jeremy Banks is IFPI’s director of anti-piracy.  He says:

“Record labels are more aware than ever that the protective measures they take in the days around an album’s release are absolutely crucial to whether the album will realize its full market potential.  You can count the cost in terms of lost returns to artist and record company from the moment the first copy leaks out onto the internet.”

The anti-piracy team tracks leaks of tracks and albums released all over the world.  It searches blogs, forums and websites.  They also work with legitimate online services like YouTube, to make sure that copyright infringements are removed.  In 2009, more than five million links were removed.

One of the most high-profile pre-release leaks of 2009 was the posting of Leona Lewis tracks online when there was a “Hack” of an internet account at her record company.  Syco Records called in the police and by working with industry investigators, traced the origins of the leak.  Simon Cowell is the managing director of Syco Records.

The 30 page report has many statistics and quotes and covers much more information than is reported here.  If you want to read more information, you can see the entire report HERE.

12 Of The Best Idol Voices Ever – Neon Limelight

“If Clay didn’t give you chills at least once during his run on American Idol, you’re dead inside. Haul yourself off to the nearest morgue. He’s the first Idol to get hit with the “too theatrical” critique, and thankfully for those who’d follow, he made it OK.”

There is a great video on the site of Clay singing Unchained Melody

Clay is included on Simon’s Best and Worst Call at Idolator

Simon Call: “Okay. Very good. You don’t look like a pop star, but you’ve got a great voice. So now what? Clay Aiken, we’ll see you in Hollywood.”

Actual Outcome: Oh, ye of little faith. Thankfully for Clay, the mass market can sometimes see greatness beneath the surface. While he may have come in second (by a mere 130,000 votes), Clay went on to debut at #1 on the Billboard chart with the highest-selling first album by an Idol alum to date. He has scored a number of subsequent hits (though he left the RCA label in 2008), generated some $28 million at the concert box office in his first five tours, and starred on Broadway in Spamalot.

On a much sadder note:

I wonder if Clay Aiken will be asked to help with this tragedy.

The U.S. Fund for UNICEF is urgently appealing for emergency assistance to aid the victims of a devastating earthquake that rocked the Caribbean nation of Haiti early today.

The earthquake that hit Haiti today is believed to have caused significant damage to the capital, including damage to UNICEF’s own office.

The 7.0 magnitude earthquake was centered west of Port-au-Prince, less than 15km from the UNICEF office.

Dennis McKinlay is the Executive Director of UNICEF NZ. He stated that communications with Haiti are extremely difficult at the moment and phones that are functioning are being used for the emergency response.

“We have very little information at the moment, but early reports are that the population has sustained significant damage, including damage to our own office. We don’t know the extent of damage or injuries, but expect to have more details by tomorrow.

“In the meantime, UNICEF is working both locally and internationally to respond to the humanitarian needs that may arise from the earthquake, such as lack of clean water and sanitation, and the spread of diseases.

“Children are particularly vulnerable after a disaster like an earthquake and UNICEF will be working closely with the Government, other UN agencies and partner organisations to get help to those who need it.”

UNICEF’s country office in Haiti and the regional office located in Panama have already deployed emergency teams to assess the situation and determine what the emergency needs are for the people of Haiti.  They already know they need funds to help provide safe water, temporary shelter, and essential medical supplies.

According to UNICEF’s website, Haiti is the poorest country in the western hemisphere and has a population of 9.6 million inhabitants, of which more than half are under 21 years old.  UNICEF has been working in Haiti since 1949 and works directly with Haiti’s government on developing long term solutions to current problems caused by poverty and lack of basic health care, education and sanitation services.

To donate to the ongoing emergency relief efforts in Haiti and the Caribbean region, please visit: www.unicefusa.org/haitiquake or call 1-800-4UNICEF.

Quote of the Day

It is not always about performance art, but about receiving positive energy from people with positive spirits. Sometimes we can see someone's spirit, and those are the people with great energy. Those are the people that get me through the day, especially on Broadway. -Clay Aiken
