Clay Aiken – American Idol Suffers Rating Problems

By musicfan123 · Comments 14330(18)http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F2012%2F01%2F30%2Fclay-aiken-american-idol-suffers-rating-problems%2FClay+Aiken+-+American+Idol+Suffers+Rating+Problems2012-01-30+08%3A17%3A57musicfan123http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F%3Fp%3D14330

American Idol, the mega-hit music competition, began Season 11 this month.  According to Nielsen numbers, the show may be in real trouble.  There was a 17% drop in the ratings for the premiere.  It was the series’ lowest opening since its first season in the summer of 2002.

If one looks at the numbers closely, the figures are even worse.  Among young adults, ages 18 to 49, the number of viewer dropped 26%. The young adult viewers are the group that Fox and the advertisers care about the most.

The numbers were even worse the second week of the season. The show was down 13.5% from the premiere and 30% from an equivalent show last season.

It might be a bit too soon to predict real trouble, but American Idol was knocked off as the time leader on both Thursdays by the CBS sitcom, The Big Bang Theory.

So…what is wrong with American Idol?  Can this problem be fixed…or is it too late?

The writer, Charlie Toft, felt that there were very clear reasons why Idol is in decline.  He suggested the following problems.

Age. Simply put, Idol is in its eleventh season. Very few series make it to that length, and it’s rare to find any that still have significant ratings momentum after a decade… Even the best contestants and the most heartbreaking personal stories can’t help but remind viewers of those who have come before.

The Glut of Music Competition Shows:  TV now has The X Factor, The Voice, and the music-dominated America’s Got Talent in the summer. The competition makes the level of anticipation rather low.

Other Networks aren’t Afraid Anymore: The fact that CBS moved its most prominent younger show to Thursdays at the same time as Idol, is proof that the fear factor is gone.

There’s no drama behind the scenes to attract viewers. This is the first time since Seasons 6 and 7 that Idol has had consecutive seasons with the same lineup of judges. There was particular curiosity going into last season, the first without Cowell. This season, there’s no need to see how things have changed with the new judges.

Idol isn’t keeping up with broader trends in music. The original Idol formula was simple enough: stand there and sing. The show has expanded to include singer-songwriter types and those who play musical instruments. According to Toft:

“Idol has not yet found a way to channel the dominant sound of today’s pop charts, with its guest rappers, use of Autotune, and its emphasis on producers, dance, and electronics.”

Too many recent winners have not become stars.  It’s gotten harder for viewers to buy that there’s anything major at stake in an Idol title.  I am sure most readers could name many winners and runner-ups that just don’t seem like winners.

The Nicey-Nice Judging panel makes for a more boring show. According to Toft:

“Some liked Simon Cowell and some hated him, but people definitely paid attention. When he issued a compliment, it had weight because they were so rarely doled out. But the problem with the lack of Simon goes beyond no one wanting to be mean – it’s more than there’s no nuance at all. Mediocre singers and the very best are treated equally. The current panel agrees on almost everything – either three yes votes or three no votes. Serious differences of opinion, or even the sense that someone is being advanced with great misgivings, are almost unheard of now. As The Voice has discovered, a panel where the judges have both credibility and differing sensibilities can be entertainment in itself.”

To be completely up-front, I haven’t watched American Idol for many years.  I loved it when it was a show that looked for the best talent and didn’t allow professionals to be contestants.  And, I will always be thankful for Season II that introduced Clay Aiken to the world.  I am sure that many of you still watch and so I would love to hear from you.

Do you think that Mr. Toft was correct in his list of problems or do you have other ideas about the decline in viewers?

Clay Aiken – What Do You Think?

By musicfan123 · Comments 14295(11)http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F2012%2F01%2F28%2Fclay-aiken-what-do-you-think%2FClay+Aiken+-+What+Do+You+Think%3F2012-01-28+08%3A15%3A53musicfan123http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F%3Fp%3D14295

After a week of tweets, blogs and surprises, Friday, January 27th  ended up being a day to catch up!  No one seemed to know if Clay Aiken had overworked his twitter fingers, was enjoying family time, was traveling, lost his phone, or just decided to take a breather.  Yeah…we get spoiled.  After so much news all week, most fans were missing the “twitter master.”

However, there was some great information found at Amazon.  Instead of the empty box that was supposed to be Steadfast, they posted a cover that just might be the real deal.  It looked much like the artwork for Bring Back My Love, but the lighting was different and the colors a bit more muted.  As always, the fans had fun talking about the great picture and the great music they hope are included on the playlist!

Below is a picture that was posted at Amazon.  What do you think?

It all started in Atlanta, Georgia on January 28th, 2003, when millions of people were introduced to a skinny redhead who wore glasses and had a unique fashion style. The American Idol judges looked skeptical and no one knew what to expect.

Clay Aiken-Atlanta

Clay Aiken-Atlanta

But like your mother used to say, don’t judge a book by its cover. Clay Aiken opened his mouth to sing and the incredible voice that poured out amazed everyone.

“Why are you here?” Clay spread his hands and stated simply; “Because I am the next American Idol.”

The skeptical judges watched and listened as Clay sang an excerpt from the 80’s song, Always and Forever and demonstrated his rich, clear voice.

Randy Jackson wanted to know where the voice came from and Simon Cowell suggested that he didn’t look like a pop star. But, it’s all about the voice and so Clay, the unlikely pop star, made his first steps on an incredible journey.

The voice continued to amaze through the following weeks. Clayton Aiken became Clay Aiken. He not only looked like a pop star, he became one.

Please watch this incredible audition here.

Clay Aiken – You Gotta Laugh!!

Sometimes you just have to laugh…One can’t help but wonder why people write this crap!! (If Clay can say it, so can I!)

Clay Aiken Is More Rattled By Donald Trump Than By Simon Cowell

E! News Chief Correspondant, Ken Baker, reports the legendary feud between former “American Idol” judge Simon Cowell and second season’s runner up Clay Aiken continues! Simon and Clay had epic spats back when Clay competed on season two of American Idol.

Clay was recently cast in Donald Trump‘s next installment of “Celebrity Apprentice,” but apparently the two haven’t left their idol feud behind. Clay recently took a dig at Simon saying that Trump is more nerve rattling then Simon, because he has more respect for Trump!

Clay and Simon…can’t we just get along? “Celebrity Apprentice” premieres on February 12, 2012 on NBC.

Now, I realize that I was not privy to the backstage happenings during American Idol -Season II, but somehow this just sounds so silly.  There certainly were not arguments on the show and I do believe that Clay was smart enough to keep his mouth shut during the time he was on the show.    So…if, as this article infers, Simon and Clay had epic spats…WHEN???

I say to laugh, but unfortunately, I have seen this article copied and published on numerous sites.  This is how rumors start.    All I can say is:

Ken Baker and Ryan Seacrest…you should be ashamed!!  I wonder if you know how many people are laughing at you?

For legal reasons, I am posting the link to this article.  KENBAKER    I have always encouraged the visitors to this blog to visit the POSITIVE articles about Clay.

Now…time to class up the blog!!

Clay Aiken – Once Again – It Still Hurts!

It was another day of publicity for Clay Aiken and his appearance on Celebrity Apprentice.  It seemed that almost every article or interview had Clay’s name in the headline.  Hmmm! Do you think that the PR teams know that Clay’s name creates a buzz?

Here are a few more links that are fun:

1.  The Clicker on Today – NBC  =  This is a great article about Clay. It is almost all Clay quotes about Simon and The Donald. Clay’s remarks are true and articulate.  It is worth the time to read it.  CLICKER

2.    Highlight Hollywood Predicts Clay Aiken As The Winner…Great picture of Clay and interesting article   Highlighthollywood

3.  The Washington Times - Celebrity Apprentice: Handicapping the odds of winning

At about noon on Thursday, I closed out of Twitter.  I was getting too emotional.  I had been having such a great time and then I kept seeing all the hate.  I decided I had too much to do and I was not going to be brought down.  BUT…it certainly made me think.  I remembered that I wrote an article about 6 months ago about negative comments.  I remembered that I even quoted Clay.  With your indulgence, I am posting this again.  Clay’s words are important to read again.

A few years ago, Clay Aiken was gracious enough to answer questions from his fans on his Official Fan club. One serious question stood out and Clays answer was amazing.

This was the question:

I’ve gotten bullied my whole life even at times as an adult. I try to ignore people such as co workers and such but it’s not easy at all. How were you able to develop such a thick skin? Any advice?

And Clay’s wonderful answer:

As unbelievably hard as it is to do, I just learned to ignore. I don’t think that the term “thick-skin” really applies to me.

If I pay attention to negativity, it still hurts my feelings. I don’t think anyone is impervious to that type of pain. Therefore, I found the best way to deal with it is to ignore it.

There has NEVER been a case that I have EVER seen where bullying is not a DIRECT result of the insecurities of the bully themselves.

People who are happy with themselves don’t have any reason to spend their time cutting down other people. In almost EVERY situation, I have found that when someone is mean to someone else because of a trait they don’t care for it is because they have insecurities about themselves and want to make others feel bad for the rush of superiority it gives them. When you let that person affect your attitude in anyway, it gives them dominion over you…which is exactly what they want.

Ignoring is hard…REALLY hard, but one of three things will happen as a result of ignoring those who are nasty to you.

  1. They will see that they no longer affect you and they will stop.
  2. Others will see that they no longer affect you, and they will stop encouraging the bullying…or…and most powerfully…
  3. You’re ignoring will allow you to spend your time focusing on things that make you happy and make you feel good about yourself, and you honestly won’t even notice the haters anymore.

Trust me…it works!!

The title of this article should be all that needs to be said. It’s a good reminder to every fan that when you write something negative on a public webpage it has the potential to hurt feelings. My philosophy is “never write something on the web that you wouldn’t say to a person face to face!”

Clay Aiken – Guilty Pleasure!

By musicfan123 · Comments 12086(15)http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F2011%2F09%2F18%2Fclay-aiken-guilty-pleasure%2FClay+Aiken+-+Guilty+Pleasure%212011-09-18+07%3A04%3A24musicfan123http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F%3Fp%3D12086
Sunday, September 18th, 2011

In September of 2003,  pictures of Clay Aiken were everywhere.  It seemed the press couldn’t get enough of his smiling face.  He was the new pop sensation in the United States and it seemed that everyone wanted all the news about the talented young man.

The September 3rd issue of Entertainment Weekly featured Clay on the cover of their magazine.  Inside, there were lots of pictures and an interview that was conducted while Clay was still on the American Idol Tour.    They labeled Clay a “guilty pleasure.”

Do you remember this article?  Did you buy the magazine?   AND, (gulp) do you still have the magazine?  (I do!!)

And The Geek Shall Inherit The Earth
Part Howdy Doody, part Davy Jones, 100% stud, America’s favorite redhead (sorry, Lucy!) dishes on Ruben, stardom, and that hair. Our heart’s Aiken for Clay!

By Dave Karger Dave Karger

Dave Karger, a senior writer at EW, also reports on box office and other movie- related matters on NBC’s ”Today”  Clay Aiken’s career is in the toilet.

”It smells like urine in here!” says the American Idol runner-up as he strides into the cavernous bathroom — complete with two stalls and a group shower — that’s serving as a makeshift office backstage at the Wachovia Arena in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. ”I bet you’ve never done an interview in one of these before!”

Yep, it’s a first on this end, but Aiken had better get used to the surroundings: Just hours before he’s to take the stage as part of this summer’s American Idols Live! concert tour, the potty is pretty much the only place he’s safe. Around the corner lurks a throng of ”Claymates,” as the most obsessed Aiken freaks call themselves — including beaming moms, screaming daughters, and one 27-year-old therapist who had ”Clay” permanently tattooed on the small of her back earlier in the day. When the arena lights go down, the 24-year-old special-ed teacher from Raleigh, N.C., is the performer who elicits the most earsplitting shrieks from the suburban crowd. As one oaktag sign in the cheap seats proclaims, ”Elvis, the Beatles, and now Clay.”

The correct progression might be more like ”The Monkees, O-Town, and now Clay,” but we get the picture. At some point since the cheesy early Guarini-esque ballads, the ubiquitous Ford Focus commercials, and the sad-sack lone dance move (you know the one, the shoulder pump crossed with the knee bend), Aiken has become one of the most natural, confident, and addictive voices in contemporary pop music. And thanks to his Queer Eye-popping physical makeover and his show-stopping vocal range, he’s emerged as the biggest star from Idol’s second season. Earlier this summer, his debut release, ”This Is the Night”/”Bridge Over Troubled Water,” shot straight to No. 1 on the Billboard charts, trounced the offering from American Idol winner Ruben Studdard by 200,000 copies, and became the fastest-selling single since Elton John’s ”Candle in the Wind 1997.” ”I was going to be a teacher or a principal,” Aiken says of his pre-Idol plans. ”Thank Jesus I came back for the wild-card show!”

We’ll give up a hallelujah as well. With the Backstreet Boys MIA and Justin Timberlake essentially an R&B artist, the world needs a new prince of pop. ”There’s a lot of singers that have incredible instruments,” says Steve Ferrera, RCA Records’ senior vice president of A&R, who, along with mogul Clive Davis and Idol creator Simon Fuller, is helping to oversee Aiken’s musical output. ”Clay is one of those rare singers who has the chops, but he’s also able to make the connection to the lyric. So when some people might be just doing vocal histrionics, he’s imbuing the lyric with passion and feeling.”

Although cuddly crooner Studdard won the right to release his CD first, the pair’s labels, RCA and J Records, have now pulled a Rehnquist and reversed America’s decision, opting to debut Aiken’s album on Oct. 14, a month before Studdard’s. ”It was with Ruben’s blessing,” insists a rep for both singers, adding that Studdard isn’t finished recording yet. ”He didn’t want to hold up Clay’s record.” That’s the noncynical take. Here’s another: Idol execs recognized they were wrong to throw so much weight behind Studdard during the competition. (Some speculated they did so because they were afraid to be put in the position of having to back Aiken, who was rumored to be gay. The singer has said he is straight.) Publicly, Idol judge Simon Cowell says marketing Aiken is a no-brainer. ”He is the clean-cut American boy, and he has the advantage of being able to appeal to 3-year-olds and 80-year-olds with pretty much pure pop music.” Aiken’s life story, which resonates with so many, is also a draw. ”If I was naming Clay’s album, I’d call it The American Dream, because he encapsulates all of that,” Cowell says. ”He is the American dream, which is the geeky little kid who went on to win over the hearts of America through a singing competition.” (Start lobbying, Simon: Aiken has yet to decide on an album title.) The goal for today’s hottest preteen pinup is to win over postpubescents who wouldn’t know how to text-message Ryan Seacrest if their lives depended on it. ”We’ve definitely tried to take it a little edgier than what he sang on the show,” says Ferrera, who connected Aiken with a posse of young, unknown songwriters. But don’t expect him to stray far from his comfort zone. ”There are no up-tempos on this album,” Ferrera says. ”But there are definitely some midtempo ballads.”

One of those, ”This Is the Night,” wasn’t exactly music to the Idol judges’ ears — when Aiken first performed the song, Cowell dismissed it as ”American Idol: The Musical.” ”I think they probably thought it sounded a little cheesy,” Aiken says now. ”Not as cheesy, I might say, as [Kelly Clarkson's] ‘A Moment Like This.’ I don’t care what they say — I like the song.” His fans did too: ”I don’t think they went out and bought one,” says Aiken, offering an explanation for his record-breaking sales. ”I think they went out and bought 15. I don’t know what they did with them — used them as coasters, Frisbees, something.”

Cowell, of course, has a different theory. ”If Ruben had had ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water’ on his record, he’d have had the No. 1,” says the judge, who often saved his highest praise on the show for Studdard. ”I think that was the hit song. If you asked 100 record buyers who bought Clay’s single ‘What song did you want to buy?’ I wouldn’t be surprised if 70 percent at least said ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water.’ People will disagree, but that’s my opinion.” (We’ll never know; RCA doesn’t track those statistics.)

Whatever the case, Aiken would like to put the Clay versus Ruben showdown to rest. ”The whole country wants Ruben and me to be at each other’s throats,” he says, tugging at the bottom of his orange shirt. ”We spent nine months competing with each other. And we both got what we wanted. He’s got a title, and I’m nothing but proud of him. We don’t look at who’s No. 1 and No. 2. Because it’s not worth it to us.” (Studdard puts it more succinctly: ”Clay is my dawg.”) Even after the disaster that was From Justin to Kelly, which made just $4.9 million at the box office this summer, Aiken still hopes to make a movie with his supposed nemesis. ”That was a premise that’s not necessarily original,” he says of the first Idol-inspired film. ”With Ruben and me you’ve got a completely different thing. Look at us! We could just stand there and people would laugh.”

At least they’re no longer laughing at Aiken’s looks. The budding star, whose formerly reddish brown eyebrows will completely disappear if they’re lightened one more time, says he’s totally receptive to all the fashion help. ”We were doing the video shoot for ‘This Is the Night,’ and the people from the record label were putting me in all these different outfits,” he remembers. ”I just stood there and was like, ‘That’s fine, that’s fine’ — all indifferent to the situation. They finally called my management rep and said, ‘Is he okay with these?’ If I knew enough about this industry, or enough about fashion, to know what was cool to wear, then I wouldn’t have needed American Idol to get into it. So I’ll be willing to do whatever you want me to do, but I’m going to say no if I’m really against it. There’s not really much middle ground. I’ll do it, or I’ll say, ‘That’s ridiculous.’ I pick my battles.”

For instance? ”There was a particular person who did my hair on the show,” he says. ”For a period [afterward] they said, ‘Let’s use some other people.’ And I looked like a greased pig. It was horrible. So I finally picked a battle there and said, ‘Listen, we’re getting him from now on.”’ Aiken also gladly recorded cover versions of Neil Sedaka’s ”Solitaire” and Carole Bayer Sager’s ”When I Need You” but scoffed at Rick Astley’s ”Never Gonna Give You Up.” ”I said that’s just a little corny, because there are already enough comparisons that can be drawn.” (Whaddya know? We’ve drawn them too; see sidebar.)

Still, we doubt Astley would have influenced the scores of fans who flooded the FCC with letters demanding a recount of the neck-and-neck Idol vote. ”I guess on one hand it’s flattering because people really wanted me to win,” Aiken says of the grassroots campaign. ”But it’s over. And I’m perfectly fine. I think people feel like I feel slighted. ‘Oh, poor Clay, we want to fight for him.’ You don’t need to fight for me. I’m perfectly happy. I would be much happier if these people would put their time and energy into the Autism Society. Leave the FCC alone, leave Ruben alone, leave me alone.”

Given today’s fickle pop-music world, Aiken knows that wish could soon come true. Maybe his album will be the beginning of a long musical legacy (we can dream, can’t we?). Or perhaps today’s Idol will indeed be tomorrow’s aspiring high school principal. ”How many eggs do I put into this basket?” says Aiken, his voice still echoing through the bathroom. ”In two years, am I going to be [first Survivor winner] Richard Hatch? Is this going to be my life and my career, or is this going to be a great summer-camp memory for me? I don’t know. That’s what makes it scary.” Frightening enough to make someone head straight for the john.

In 1967, the Gibb Brothers released their first album in England.  Named Bee Gee’s 1st, the album had 14 tracks.  One of the most popular tracks on the album was #10.  It was called To Love Somebody and it became a huge hit for the group.

In May of 2003, Clay Aiken sang To Love Somebody as part of the Top 4 Show of season 2 of American Idol.  All the American Idol judges, including Robin Gibb who was a guest judge for the evening, immediately praised Clay’s fantastic performance of the song. The live audience gave Clay a standing ovation for his performance.

That evening was one of the few times that I agreed with Simon Cowell’s comments about Clay’s performances.  That night, Cowell said:

Clay, I think this is the third Pop Idol or American Idol I’ve done if you include the English one, and that’s probably one of the best performances I’ve ever heard throughout the competition.

I would love to hear Clay sing this song again.  I think it really fits his vocal range and it certainly brought out strong emotions in Clay’s performance.

Were you watching Clay on American Idol when he sang this song?  Is it one of your favorites too?

On March 12, 2010, Clay Aiken stood on the stage of the Raleigh Memorial Auditorium and sang one of the most popular songs in history.  Unchained Melody is thought to be the most recorded song written in the 20th century.  There are approximately 500 different versions of this song.

In 1955, HyZaret wrote the beautiful lyrics and put them to the music created by Alex North.  Unchained melody was originally written for the 1955 movie, Unchained. Todd Duncan sang the song.

In 1965, The Righteous Brothers created a new version of Unchained Melody.  It hit the number four spot on the music charts and continued on the charts for 12 weeks.  Their version of the song was used in the 1990 film, Ghost.  After the movie, Unchained Melody was once again in the number one spot on the charts.

The song was also used in the film, Soldier, a military drama.  Two actors from the film sang a simple rendition of the song.  No one really thought much about it until the television station that broadcast the movie received countless calls from viewers who wanted to buy the version by the actors.  It was Simon Cowell of American Idol fame who convinced the actors to record the song. And their recording hit platinum status within its first week in 1995.

In 2010, the talented Ben Cohn wrote a beautiful arrangement of Unchained Melody for Clay Aiken.  The lush orchestration highlighted the strengths of Clay’s voice.  Many feel that this production of the song is one of the best around.

No one can sing Unchained Melody better than Clay Aiken who has loved the song since he was a young child.  His passionate rendition will be around a long time.  Clay now “owns” Unchained Melody.

On Wednesday, a list of the Top 25 most shared videos from The View listed Clay Aiken’s performance of Unchained Melody as # 3.  The wonderful performance has been shared on Twitter, Facebook and many different blogs. The following is the YouTube of Clay singing Unchained Melody on The View.

Quote of the Day

It is not always about performance art, but about receiving positive energy from people with positive spirits. Sometimes we can see someone's spirit, and those are the people with great energy. Those are the people that get me through the day, especially on Broadway. -Clay Aiken
