On Tuesday, May 13, 2014, Clay Aiken was officially announced as the winner of the North Carolina 2nd Congressional District Democratic Primary Race.  The North Carolina Board of Elections reported that Clay had 11,678 votes which is 40.86% of the democratic votes cast in district 2.

Because of Clay’s win and the tragic death of Keith Crisco, this particular election has been covered by the press all over the world.  When I last checked google, Clay’s name was mentioned 256,000,000 times on google in the last 24 hours.

It’s official: American Idol alumClay Aiken is the winner of the Democratic primary for a congressional seat in North Carolina.

The news comes one day after Aiken’s political opponent,Keith Crisco, was found deadfrom injuries sustained in his home when he fell.

Aiken will face Republican incumbent Renee Elmers for North Carolina’s second Congressional District seat.

Aiken led with 369 votes, or the 40 percent necessary to move on in the Nov. 4 election. The tally will be made official May 22.

On Monday, Crisco, 71, died after an accidental fall. Hours earlier, Crisco’s campaign manager, Christine Botta, said Crisco had decided to concede the race after absentee votes were counted.

Aiken released a statement Monday that he would suspend all campaign activities after learning of Crisco’s death.

Aiken’s campaign told The Hollywood Reporter that the candidate will not be commenting on the results.

“Due to our decision to suspend campaign activities, we are not releasing any statements today,” said a rep for Aiken.

…On Monday, second-place finisher Keith Crisco, 71, died after falling at his home. Hours earlier, campaign manager Christine Botta said they had counted the absentee votes in two key counties, forcing Crisco to acknowledge defeat. He had decided to concede his loss to Aiken on Tuesday, she said.

“Keith and I talked in detail about the fact that the votes weren’t there,” Botta said.

Aiken and Crisco each picked up a handful of votes after the last of the absentee ballots returned by a Monday deadline were counted, according to results on the State Board of Elections website.

The results will become official after review by the state elections board. That meeting isn’t yet set, Elections board spokesman Joshua Lawson said, but is tentatively scheduled for May 22…
