Saturday, June 21st is the summer solstice and the longest day of the year. This is the day that the sun shines directly on the Tropic of Cancer, an imaginary line north of the equator. After the 21st, the days will get shorter by about a minute or so each day until we reach the autumnal equinox, when day and night become even.
So…that means it’s time to enjoy vacations, great weather, pools, baseballs, and everything else that goes along with the summer months!
How will Clay Aiken celebrate the first day of summer? Well, for this busy candidate, I would imagine part of the day will be spent on the phone, calling all the important people he can, hoping they can help him raise funds for his run for Congress. But he needs a break too. If Clay is at home, there are lots of exciting things to do in the Triangle area.
- Raleigh Little Theatre: Clay could see a production of the Noel Coward play, Blithe Spirit. The play is filled with an eccentric medium, a clairvoyant and even a ghost…it might be a fun evening.
- 3rd Annual Peak City Pig Fest :Historic Downtown Apex – Take the family for food and fun built around a KCBS-sanctioned BBQ competition. Attractions include music, food booths, pig races, kids play area and competitive BBQ teams. Hmmm!
- Performance Edge Presents “2014 Summer Showcase”: Fletcher Theater: See 40 of the Triangle’s most talented high school and college students from more than 25 area schools perform group selections and solo works. Students are accompanied by a live band. Now that sounds like something Mr. Aiken would enjoy!!
- World Music Day –Come and celebrate the summer solstice, June 21st with MUSIC from 4 to 11 pm at the Raleigh City Plaza, 400 Fayetteville St. in Raleigh. There will be all kinds of music: rock, jazz, Indian, folk, Japanese drums, sitar player, show tunes singer, African drums, and more…Outdoor event, free and open to all. Now that sounds like fun!
- Cary Food Truck Rodeo:The fun happens on Sunday June 22nd 12-4:30pm on W. Chatham Street in downtown Cary. 15 local trucks are scheduled to answer the growling stomachs of the crowd. Beer from Fortnight Brewing and wine from Chatham Hill Winery will be available for sale as well. Seating will be available and food truck fans will be entertained by with live music from Russ Thompson 12-2pm followed by tunes from Jacob Lutz 2:15-4:15pm. (From The Triangle Explorer)
