Clay Aiken Headlines The News

American Idol kicked off its Farewell Season on Wednesday, January 6th, with a two-hour premiere that focused on auditions in Atlanta and Denver.  Unfortunately, it seems that there were few people who cared.  The viewer numbers were down again, even down from last season’s premiere rating.

And…if you follow the news, you know that the press is following Clay Aiken and saying very little about American Idol.  That says a lot!.  I mean…Clay Aiken was trending on Facebook this morning – American Idol was not!

There are LOTS of article about Clay and his tweets about American Idol.  I couldn’t even begin to post them all, but I will post a few.  I will NOT post the article from TMZ.  As usual, the article is negative and full of gossip.  The good thing is most of the comments on the article are saying positive things about Clay…yep…people see right through TMZ!

The Wrap has an interesting article about Clay and American Idol:

Former Fox Chief Kevin Reilly on ‘American Idol’: ‘Now Was the Time for It to Be Over’

Former Fox Broadcasting entertainment chairman Kevin Reilly believes that the network made the right decision by ending “American Idol” this season.

“The show was extraordinary, one of a kind,” Reilly said on Thursday, during the Television Critics Association winter press tour in Pasadena, California. “But now was the time for it to be over.”…

…Fans prepared to say goodbye to “American Idol” on Wednesday, when Part 1 of its farewell season premiere allowed Fox to finish in first place across primetime. Unfortunately, the outgoing singing competition hit an all-time premiere low in the process.

The two-hour premiere pulled in a 2.9 rating in the advertiser-coveted adults 18-49 demographic and 10.9 million total viewers, according to preliminary numbers.

Despite finishing first in the ratings, some were unimpressed with the premiere, including Season 2 runner-up Clay Aiken.

“Watching @americanidol for the first time in a decade. You never know what you’ve got til it’s gone,” Aiken said in the first of a series of tweets making fun of the show as it began its 15th and last season. “Well… now I know why the ratings are down,” he wrote in another tweet.

Clay Aiken Goes After American Idol Judges, Says Root Canals Are “More Entertaining”

The last season of American Idol is underway, which means there are going to be a whole bunch of retrospectives and think pieces and the like about the end of this once mighty pop-cultural institution over the next few months. Fox is no doubt hoping that others exhibit the same thinking as former Idol runner-up (who has since entered the world of politics) Clay Aiken, who tweeted that he was watching the show Wednesday night “for the first time in a decade,” reflecting, “You never know what you’ve got til it’s gone.”

But Fox was presumably not thrilled with . . . uh, everything he tweeted thereafter about the show. Aiken’s criticism mostly seemed centered on the current panel of judges, which is comprised of Jennifer Lopez, Harry Connick Jr., and Keith Urban…

…Of course, this sort of thing can sometimes have the effect of just increasing the amount of attention paid to a given show or phenomenon…

Author, Josh Duboff put almost of Clay’s tweets in the article.  You can read the entire article at VANITY FAIR.

Cosmopolitan wrote a short article today:

Clay Aiken Has a Lot of Thoughts About the Final Season of American Idol

The 15th and final season of American Idol premiered Wednesday night — perhaps you saw that Kanye West auditioned for it — but at least one former Idol contestant was not having it: Clay Aiken. Apparently the season two runner-up watched the show “for the first time in a decade,” but did not like what he saw. He started off sounding a little disappointed (“You never know what you’ve got till it’s gone”), but quickly escalated to full-on hatin’ with a snoozing emoji and the line, “Well…now I know why the ratings are down.” That or the fact that it’s been on since the early years of the Bush presidency, but sure.
